The Man in the Mirror Rembrant

I have not done a self portrait in quite awhile after watching this video I know it's time to do another one. I think one of the interesting things about Rembrandt's self portraits is the fact that his palette seem unchanged.
  • Lead white
  • Ochres
  • Bone black
  • Vermillion
  • Siennas
  • Raw umber
  • Burnt umber
  • Cassel earth

A modern version of Rembrandt’s palette should include yellow ocher, burnt sienna, burnt umber, white, black, and cadmium red deep.  Rembrandt was known for his complex mixtures rather than raw color

Rembrandt created his distinctive portraits with a small palette of colors dominated by
dark earth tones and golden highlights and using a particularly thick consistency of oil colors and applying several layers of paint to the canvas. Over the years, the artist’s use of impasto in the light areas grew heavier and heavier, while the shadows became increasingly transparent.
Rembrandt was considered a master of chiaroscuro, an Italian term for a style using strong lights and heavy shadows to create depth in a painting and a center of interest. Rembrandt used it to emphasize the faces and hands in his portraits; their setting was less important.
Here are some steps to follow for a Rembrandt style portrait:
  • Sketch the portrait on the canvas
  • Block in the transparent shadows with a thin-mix (the only time ‘thin’ is used)
  • Lightly brush warm brown hues of oil paint upon the canvas
  • Apply skin tone
  • Mix black and white into cool gray for mid-tones, between light and shadow
  • Working fast, build-up contrast between heavy opaque lights and thin transparent shadows
  • Start blending when paint becomes tacky and hard to move
  • Allow the canvas to dry thoroughly
  • For the second sitting, glaze the entire surface of the canvas with black
  • Carefully remove paint from light areas using only a piece of cloth
  • Use heavy impasto in the light areas but retain some of the glaze, creating a three-dimensional look and appearance

So show me your self portraits and I will post links to your blogs for other to view them. Paint on friends.

Pumpkin Wagon, fall landscape, farm, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: I painted this wagon a few years ago " en plein air" at a vegetable farm in Michigan. I remember the cold October day I painted it. I wore gloves with the tips of the fingers cut off to paint. I thought the original painting lacked texture so I went back last night and re worked it to see if I could add a little more interest to the work.I was working on a dry surface most of my paintings are done wet on wet so this was a little different for me. I oil the piece out to reduce friction and resaturate the colors. To do this I brush a thin layer of oil over the whole painting and then rub away most of it, leaving just a whisper of oil behind, When I paint over this, it has the smooth, easy application of wet paint. This extra layer of oil, also helps to fatten up any sunken areas of the painting which have become matte and unattractive as they have dried. This is a particular problem with the darks, which tend to be applied in a leaner way, either through thin application or by the addition of solvent.

So this my painting Mulligan for the day. In Golf you get one for the game, In painting there is no limit.

Sometimes it is a good thing to step away from a work a come back to it.

Making a video on you Ipad and sell more art

Today I expanded my learning curve, for the first time I did a video using my Ipad, maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I did a lot of reading on how to do this, then  downloaded a specal application from itunes and then finally with the help of a turorial from youtube I was finally able to figured it all out. I know that a year from now I will say gee wiz guys why in the world did I make such a big dealof this? Maybe the next one will make it to the Cannes Film Festival or at least the Traverse City Michigan Film Festival.

This application also works on Iphone's so watch this and learn just like me, and maybe we both can sit at the big kids table next time.

Art in Michigan

September in Michigan means bright sunshine, back to school, crisp apples, football games , and what’s grown to be my favorite fall event ArtPrize. ArtPrize 2012 is ready to take over the Grand Rapids Michigan Art scene starting next week. It opens Sept 19,2012.

There will be 1,517 entries this year at ArtPrize and OMG I am one of them. So put on those walking shoes and take in as many of this year’s 1,517 entries as you can. I sugest you go to the web site for ArtPrize to plan your visit by checking out the Art and the Artist to see which ones you really don’t want to miss.I would used that as your starting point. Every venue has so many artist its hard to see them all.

There are also lot of Art happenings so those you have to be there when it happens so mark the day and time because you don’t want to miss the music or the dance.

I will be at St Cecillia Music Center. click on the link for directions from your location.
