repurposed boats

It's great to see these weathered old wooden boats given new life. They add lots of rustic nautical charm and character to these homes, gardens and outdoor areas.

Isn't this boat garden beautiful?

nature shelves

Hi.. welcome to another week.
After a record high temperature in Sydney on Friday of 45-46 degrees celsius (114 fahrenheit)! we've been enjoying cooler weather this weekend. At least the nights haven't been too hot, so we can be thankful for that.

This is something I've been thinking about making for ages. A place to keep small treasure and beach finds. The idea is from a book I've had for a long time and still love the simple coastal style of it.
Easy to make.. I used some old wooden bed slats I found a while ago, i knew they'd come in handy one day. I bought the rope from a discount shop.

I measured the pieces of timber to length and marked where I wanted holes to be drilled, then handed them over to the live in carpenter ;)
The bottom shelf is the longest, mine is 62cm 24". The middle shelf one inch shorter and the top shelf one inch shorter than that.
The holes need to be drilled slightly larger than the rope.
I painted them with primer and a few coats of water based paint.

I measured 4 lengths of rope then threaded it through the holes, knotting below the shelves, then knotting them all together at the top. I did this on the floor, it takes a bit of time to get all the lengths even. The distance between the shelves is about 21cm 8".

I like them filled with simple, natural finds - pebbles, shells, feathers, string and rope. It reminds me of the walls of a boatshed or beach hut.

Have a great week!

herb garden

This is something I prepared earlier, before Christmas. Winning some cute herb markers made from old spoons as part of a prize in Deanne's giveaway inspired me to buy some more herbs and get planting.
The old door is another great Steve find. I liked the original weathered green colour, but white won out and I like it even better now with all the other white painted furniture on the deck.

I love the look of plants in old boxes & I finally got around to trying some stencilling with the stencils I bought here. I painted an old box found at a garage sale white and decided to use grey paint and one of my lucky numbers.
I'm a bit superstitious about numbers. 26 happens to be the date of my birthday, my daughter's birthday and amazingly the date both of my sets of grandparents were married on the same day at the same time!

I've since planted these plants into larger pots where they are now much bigger & thriving in the heat. You might be interested, the larger herb in the box is stevia, a natural sweetener.

upcycled coastal christmas

Hello..
Today I have a few white coastal Christmas decorations to show you, made with some things thrifted & found at garage sales
We're loving all the white with silver and Christmas lights at our place. I think it suits the Christmas climate here and feels like coming home to a cool oasis on a scorching hot day.

I was going to use spray paint, but ended up using a paint brush , primer and a few coats of white paint to upcycle a gold pineapple, a wooden bowl & a cake stand.

Filled with white shells & little silver baubles, they add a festive feel to our entry.

before..

What do you think?
Better white?

upcycled storage

upcycling:
the art of reusing something unwanted and converting it into something better

hello..
remember the vintage crates i found at a garage sale ?
after a good clean i converted them into kitchen storage & shelving.

i like the contrast of white against the rustic timber, with some blue and white stripes thrown in.

have you upcycled anything lately?

garage sailing

there's nothing like a good garage sale to get me excited.
i'm sure my fellow junk, i mean vintage collectors out there understand what i mean.

a yearly event at one of my favourite old homes in the area. always good stuff to be found & a bargain to be had. the garage and beautiful old garden were filled with some amazing old things. unfortunately not much in the way of furniture this time.

these are my fabulous finds piled up on our sunny deck in the weekend sunshine. i added my shells and succulents & thought this would all look right at home at bondi markets.
a couple of vintage crates, a rustic old lantern, a kitsch gold pineapple, bottles, a turquoise frame & fabric to make a cushion with, a hat to add to the collection & a vintage bag i thought sophie would like.

see you later!

old ladder

hi everyone..

there are certain things in life you can never have enough of. some would say shoes or handbags. for me it's old ladders, old jars and bottles, wooden boxes and shutters. practical, portable and full of rustic charm.
my sister recently gave me this old beauty to add to my collection. i love it out on our deck but i'm sure it will be put to lots of other uses around this old place.

here's a simple way to light up a balcony...
a rustic old ladder, some jars of flowers, a couple of potted plants and candles.

what can you never have enough of?
