Search Content with Barcode Scanner on Droid Phones

Last year I was toying with the idea of buying a smart phone, but I kept hearing the 4G phones were coming out any day. So I waited since the 4G phones were supposed to be a good bit faster.
While I waited, I had an opportunity to test drive a friends 3G droid phone and absolutely loved it. About a month later, the phone company I have been with for around 9-10 years came out with a 4G phone and my cost was only $99. I couldn't pass up that deal.

I must say, I love this phone! It's great when you're stuck waiting in a doctor's office or in a line somewhere. You can just pull out your phone, go online and moderate comments, read blogs or anything you like. And the 4G phones are super fast.

There are also lots of free apps you can download to use on a droid phone and many are really awesome. An app that I have downloaded is, Barcode Scanner. You can use it with "Google Shopper" and with "ShopSavvy" two other cool apps. You can see Barcode Scanner here on my phone in the pic below.

Excuse my Christmas wallpaper/background I added last November right after I bought the phone. I still love that Christmas garland pic from the Pottery Barn catalog (Pottery Barn Garland Tutorial) so I've just left it on my phone as my wallpaper. Hey, Christmas is just 9 months away, you know. ;)

If you have the Barcode Scanner app or a similar app, I'm sure you already know how it works. If not, check this out...it's pretty awesome!

When you click on the icon for the Barcode Scanner, this screen comes up...

You place the screen over a barcode. I had the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, on my desk...

So that was the one I scanned.

It immediately recognized the book, identifying it by its ISBN number. At that point it gave me several options. I didn't try the "Google Shopper" option but that option would have given me all the places locally and online where I could purchase the book and the price at each of those places. I would also have been able to read online reviews about the book. This option really comes in handy if you are standing in a store trying to decide whether to buy a book from that store or not.

The option I chose was to "Search Contents." I had no idea how that worked but decided to give it a whirl.

Now I was supposed to type in some topic or subject I wished to "search for" in this book. I decided to search for a person I remembered from the book, Emma Kelly. Many years after I had read this book, I had an opportunity to travel to Savannah. Savannah is always one of my fav places to visit, although I seem to always be there in July and August when it is blazing hot. While in Savannah, I went on the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Tour." It was a blast and during my stay in Savannah I actually got to meet one of the characters in the book, Emma Kelly.

Emma Kelly was known as "The Lady of 6,000 Songs." She passed away a few years ago, but she was and still is an icon in Savannah, GA. We had an opportunity to hear her play and sing while in Savannah and during a break, she graciously autographed the book. She was so nice, a truly sweet person.

Here's a little mini biography about her in case you are interested:

"Emma Kelly, the "Lady of 6,000 Songs" made famous by the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." John Berendt, author of the 1994 book, devoted an entire chapter to the singer and pianist, describing Kelly as a teetotaling Baptist who played cocktail lounges Saturday nights and Sunday schools on Sunday mornings. The recognition made her Savannah nightclub act a must-see for tourists. Kelly got her nickname from Savannah-born songwriter Johnny Mercer, who, after challenging her to play numerous songs he named, estimated she knew 6,000 songs from memory."

After scanning the barcode on the back of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, selecting the "Search Contents" option, and typing in Emma Kelly's name...here's what popped up. It found all the places in the book where Mrs. Kelly's name is mentioned and it gave me the page number and the sentence. Is that not the coolest thing?!

I'm just beginning to learn about all the amazing things you can do with a smart/droid phone. If you've been thinking about getting a smart phone, go for it. I have really enjoyed mine. They are very user friendly and nothing like the Blackberry I had before and didn't enjoy using at all.

I have to end this post with something I found online that gave me a chuckle. Apparently, John Berendt, the author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly and during the interview he was asked how he came to choose Savannah and its residents as the city about which to write. The book is definitely filled with some rather "interesting" people, to say the least.

Mr. Berendt answered in this way: "People in Savannah don't say, 'Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on her coat.' Instead, they say, 'Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on the coat that her third husband gave her before he shot himself in the head.'"

Ha! Yep, that's the south I know and love! The only thing missing on the end of that sentence was, "Bless her heart." ;)

See you this evening for Tablescape Thursday!

I just switched from a Blackberry to an Android, Susan, and I love it, too. I have been finding all sorts of free applications that are very cool. I posted about one for the camera that I am having so much fun with, if you want to take a look. I have to check out the Bar Code Scanner! Very interesting and your book sounds great!

XO,
Jane

Funny! I love it. AND I love my Droid! I found it very easy and I have fun finding new applications for it. My new favorites right now are the QVC app where I can see what the special of the day is and Grocery Pal which updates each week with the specials at my area grocery stores. I'll have to check out the bar code app. Thanks!

I love this posting! I don't have internet access on my phone, but I would love to try it. This is a good lesson on how wonderful a tool they've become!
I adore the story you chose to talk about. Although I didn't read the book, the movie is one of my all time favorites.

Hi Susan.
Thanks for the tip on "Google Shopper".I just downloaded the app and it's great! You can also use voice recognition with it.I just said the name of a bottle of one of my favorite wines and it gave me 939 results! The "Tom Cat" app is adorable too. He repeats everything you say and purrs when you touch his neck. I also enjoyed your piece on Emma Kelly.. didn't she play herself in a cameo in the movie?I just love Savannah and its people. I've been to the Jim Williams' house numerous times and have many photos of the home and the beautiful Savannah parks and gardens. You have the most interesting posts! xoxo

What is the purpose of the bar scanner on your cell phone? That's a tour we missed while in Savannah. Savannah and Charleston are our favorite places to vacation. We were in both in Dec. the last time, but I'm sure it is absolutely breathtaking in the Spring and Summer.

Can you tell I'm technology challenged? We don't even have a cell phone!

Thank you for that informative post - much more fun to learn about tech things with lovely images!! Question for you - I have become a design blog fanatic. I probably subscribe and visit close to a hundred a day (of which yours is one of my favorites!) - my question is - is there a way to search the content in all these blogs at one time? For instance - i might remember seeing a blog post from my 100 sites about the movie house from "Somethings gotta to give" - but I have to visit each blog and search through the archives - which is NOT easy!! Any ideas or tips? Thank you. Karen

Hi Karen, Thanks!
About your question: A lot of blogs (but not all) have a "search" box somewhere on the home page so you can search for older posts. If you scroll down to the bottom of this blog, you'll see a search box. Just type in a topic or word that you think would be in the post and it should pull up all the old post. After you type it in, you usually have to scroll back to the top to find the results it pulled up. I don't know why it puts them all the way back up at the top, but it does. At first you may think the "search" didn't work, but the results are just at the top of the blog.
Also, I've been creating different categories at the top of this blog just under the header pic to help folks find older posts.
Hope this is helpful!

I guess I am going to have to move into this century and try that phone. Do you find the small screen hard to read?

I used to live in one of the places made famous in "The Book" -- the General Bartow House on Jones Street. (That's where they held the card games or was it craps?) Anyway, it was a long time ago!

At Wednesday, March 09, 2011 , Blogger Susan (Between Naps On The Porch.net) said...

Scribbler, How cool is that...to read about a scene in a book where you actually lived!
Actually, the screen is pretty easy to read because you can swipe outward with two fingers and it will enlarge nicely. Then when you want to shrink it back down, you just swipe two fingers back together. It's an amazing device. I'm hooked! LOL

I don't know much about the phone, but I do know that is one of my all time favorite books. I don't know if I will ever get to Savannah, but that book made me fall in love with that city.

I've read it many times!:-)

I switched from a Blackberry to Android at the beginning of this year and am so happy I did!! My daughter's boyfriend had one and I was ready to get one after he showed me what his could do. My favorite app is the Google Sky. I've used it a lot and am actually learning the constellations.

Going to Savannah April 6 with college roommates for an all girl trip. This is one of the tours we are planning on taking!

My older son has the Droid, younger son has an iPhone, what does Mom have?? Hmm...something is wrong with this picture! HA!

I'll have to upgrade for sure. We can't go on line at work to easily. I would love to just check my email during the day.

Mary
P.S. Mr. Berendt's quote, Oh my yes! In the south you get a "back story" whether you want one or not!

Hi Rita Mae,
I know that is a bit of a problem. The only thing that helps me with that is turning it sideways which makes the keyboard a bit bigger.
