Book Giveaway and Author Interview: Mayfair Moon by J.A. Redmerski

After a nightmarish encounter with a werewolf, seventeen-year-old Adria Dawson loses her sister, but gains the love of a mysterious young man and his legendary family.
Strange and tragic things begin to happen in the small town of Hallowell, Maine: residents come down with an unexplainable ‘illness’ and some disappear. In the midst of everything, Isaac Mayfair is adamant about keeping Adria safe, even from her sister whom he has warned her to stay away from.
As unspeakable secrets unfold all around Adria, impossible choices become hers to bear. Ultimately, no matter what path she takes, her life and the lives of those she loves will be in peril. As she learns about the werewolf world she also learns why her place in it will change the destinies of many.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
After a frightening encounter with a werewolf, Adria Dawson loses her sister, but gains the love of a mysterious young man and his legendary family.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I’ve always been a huge fan of traditional werewolves as depicted in films like Dog Soldiers, Ginger Snaps and Underworld and when I couldn’t find any YA books out there with werewolves like these, I decided to write my own!
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I would have to say I’d like to have dinner with Isaac definitely, but I have a soft spot for Harry, too. And I would never want to have dinner with someone like Sibyl because I’d be afraid she’d poison me!

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I absolutely love Carrie Ryan’s THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH, but I’ve recently discovered a great book by independent author, C.L Stegall called THE WEIGHT OF NIGHT. I really don’t have much time to read, but I do it anyway.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
My newest novel, a not-so-YA-book called DIRTY EDEN will be released around the end of February, or first of March. If you like dark and gritty adult humor, unconventional views and strange, creepy alternate realities, then you might like DIRTY EDEN. Book Two in the Darkwoods Trilogy, KINDRED, will hopefully be released January 2013.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
Tough question! I think maybe Neil Gaiman’s STARDUST. It’s fun and fantastical with just the right amount of danger and love.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I like to start with a latte, but the most important thing I need is a quiet, undisturbed house. A few songs that inspired THE MAYFAIR MOON were #1 – ‘Iris’ by Goo Goo Dolls and a great song called ‘Wings of Gabriel’ by an underground band, Arcana.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
It’s a toss-up between flight and being able to absorb all information from any book, in seconds (including the ability to learn to speak all languages fluently!).

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I love the outdoors: hiking, camping, anything in nature.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I really enjoyed my journey through THE MAYFAIR MOON and knew right away that it would have to be a trilogy. I would love to hear from readers about what they did and didn’t like about the story, who they might want to see more of, less of – I want to know what THEY want. Of course, I’ll always stay true to my original direction, but I might also be inclined to give the readers what they want every now and then if they yell about it loud enough. J

Book Giveaway World of Ryyah: Birth of the Half Elves and Author Interview with H.L. Watson

World of Ryyah: Birth of the Half Elves
World of Ryyah: Birth of the Half Elves by H.L. Watson

Twelve-year-old Donovan and his best friend, Akenji, are standing on the riverbank in their small fishing village south of the Wood Elven Forest, dreaming about their future when, suddenly, Boric’s Barbarians invade and undertake a massive slaughter. The orphaned boys are kidnapped and face a life of slavery until an Elven commander, Alayna, and her Elven Rangers intervene. The boy’s fate changes when the brave and good-hearted Alayna defies Lord Aden’s orders to kill the human children. She instead obtains a begrudging permission to raise and train them in archery and sword tactics so they can serve as scouts for the Wood Elves. Under the nurturance of Alayna, the human boys learn that the Wood Elves are not the fierce creatures they had been taught to fear.
About Henry (H.L)
H. L. Watson was born and raised in Dallas Texas and his always been an avid fan of the fantasy and sci-fi gender as well as a dedicated online gamer. Mr. Watson first came up with the concept of world of ryyah when he was in his early 20s and began thinking up interesting in detail background stories for a videogame concept. As the years went on Mr. Watson adopted his early concepts into what will become known as the world of ryyah book series (The Elven age saga). And these series readers will become well-versed within the world of ryyah and read about many strange and interesting races and characters.

Our Interview:

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
Donovan a young man goes on a journey to save a kidnapped princess and is met with difficult trials along the way that he must overcome to get her safely back home. The two characters eventually fall for each other in a way that is unexpected, and they grow closer to each other as their journey continues.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I first came up with the concept of the World of Ryyah when I was in my early twenties and began thinking up interesting in-detail background stories for a videogame concept. As the years went on, I adopted many of my early concepts into what is now known as The Elven Age Saga book series.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
The character I would most like to have dinner with would be High lady Alousia (The main female characters mother) she is a character of immense wisdom and intelligence and I'm thinking someone could learn a lot from her while being in her company.  The least would me Garock (the main villain) He would be more likely to split my skull rather than talk about how fine the weather is today.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
The Saxon Chronicles, by Bernard Cornwell.  All so B. V. Larson, Star Force Series I'm a huge fan of the Lord of the rings and Star Wars.  But most of all my trusty Bible which I read every day and have found that it has had a profound impact on my life.

--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
Well I'm currently working on book 2 in this current series (Unlikely Alliance) which I don't have a release date set yet but most likely will be released sometime in December of this year.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?

I would have to say it would definitely be (Lord of the rings) I've often fantasized about being a great Elven warrior taking on and defeating the armies of evil.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Definitely!  Music is always something that helps me think up new and interesting ideas to put in my books.  Songs from artists like Celtic Woman, Skillet, BarlowGirl, and many others.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Most likely the power to predict the future that would be very useful in Vega!

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoyed playing the occasional online game chatting with friends and spending time with them in general I'm a sucker for intelligent conversation.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
Yes I wanted to say thank you to many of the guys and gals that already reviewed book one in left positive feedback is very humbling to think that my work would be so well received I am very grateful to both my readers in God. Thanks for your support guys.

Interview with Calvin Locke author of Dream Fighter Chronicles

The Dream Fighter Chronicles Book One: Discovery
Dream Fighter Chronicles Book One: Discovery by Calvin Locke

Five cousins fall asleep in their grandparents' basement and share a dream. In it, they have special powers. Haley can leap across the room, Braden can move objects with his mind, Jack moves at super speed, and Jillian can make anything she wants appear before her eyes. What they don't know is they come from a long line of legendary warriors, Dream Fighters, and it is now their turn to join the fight.
Led by their uncle, they learn of a centuries old order of people with special abilities just like their own. In order to protect the real world, they must stop an invasion by the evil Sarlak and his army of Gorgons. With only their uncle, himself trapped in Jillian's doll, as a guide, they must master their newfound powers and stop this attack before it starts.
Along the way, they will discover their specific powers and understand how to use them, as well as control their fear and learn to work together, even when they really don't want to. Only hours before they were just normal kids playing video games in the basement. Now they wield the same powers they used in those games, only there are no save points or restarts. This time, everything counts and there are no second chances.
From sinister traps and magical trickery, they will fight off Sarlak's plan and somehow find a way to save the day. Whose power will lead them to victory? Which one of them will fall under Sarlak's spell? This first book in the Dream Fighter Chronicles tells the story of how it all began for these future heroes.

Our Interview:

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
5 kids share a dream and find special powers. They stop invasion to save the world. Heroes rise, enemies fall. Baby-Wets-A-Lot goes wee-wee.

--How did you get the idea for the story? My mother had read my detective novels while recuperating from heart surgery. She said she loved them but, 'Your nieces and nephews can't read them.' She was right about that. So I wrote a short story which turned into a series. I'm on book six now.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with? I'd love to have dinner with Danny. He's a character based on my nephew who passed not long after birth. He just seems to have this feistiness to him that's contagious. If this were a wish, I'd wish my sister and brother-in-law could have that dinner with him.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read? I read a little less than I used to. I always loved Clive Cussler's books for the adventure. I'm a fan of Ernest Hemingway (it's the English professor in me) and Count of Monte Cristo is an absolute classic. Other than that, as a mystery writer (my alter ego) I always find time for a good mystery.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates? Book three of The Dream Fighter Chronicles should be out very soon. It's called United They Stand. The fourth book, The Nowhere Kids is in final edit. The series takes a drastic turn in that book, which is more than double the length of the previous three. I am also working on a spinoff young adult book, tentatively titled The Shadows of the Knight. My alter ego is writing his fourth mystery in the John Keegan NYPD series, called We All Fall Down.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why? One of the aforementioned Clive Cussler books. I'd love to spend a day in the life of the main character, Dirk Pitt. He's an adventurer who really enjoys life. One day in his shoes is like a year in mine.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote? I like to write to music.  Usually, it is instrumental, but classical music isn't my thing. So I listen to video game soundtracks. It really works. Except for the time I used a soundtrack from a game that was tense, scary actually. That writing session didn't go well. Tough to write with the jitters.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose? Everyone chooses flight because, well, it's so cool. Besides that, I'd like the ability to freeze time. It would give me a chance to live in the moment more.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time? I like sports. I play baseball and hockey and ride my bicycle whenever I can. You can also find me wherever good food is served.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers? The Dream Fighter Chronicles came from very important people in my life. Sure, they are ficitonalized, but the essence came from them. Even though I wrote the books with children in mind, adults appear to enjoy it just as much. Consider the story to be an adventure of endless possibilities, hard decisions, and the importance of trust, with a dose of humor thrown in. Oh, and without anything that would be anywhere near inappropriate for children.

An exiled group of power sorcerers are eager to recruit Sam, believing that he is destined to help them achieve their long-held goal. If they succeed, they could bring about the downfall of not only Atlas Crown. but all humankind.
Our Unique Interview:

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
MASTERS OF THE VEIL is a unique take on magical training... with a high school jock who never knew he was a sorcerer until a "hiccup" at the big game.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
The idea for MOTV first came to me when I sensed a trend in fantasy novels. I kept seeing the 'outcast' type being sucked into a fantasy realm and thriving there. I wondered what would happen if a popular, sociable person found him self in a similar situation. Since I couldn't find the story anywhere, I wrote it :)

--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
My favorite character (besides Sam of course) is named Glissandro Thicket. He's mute, but has found a way to magically speak through music. I'd love to hear him play/speak.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
Ok, so Harry Potter? Greatest series ever.
But since it's over, I tell everyone to read my new fantasy obsession. "The Name of the Wind," by Patrick Rothfuss. The series isn't over yet so I still have the final installment to look forward to. The first two books in the series are INCREDIBLE. So unique, well thought out, and thrilling. Buy them!
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
I do! I'm currently working on finishing up the sequel to MOTV called CHILDREN OF THE VEIL. In my opinion it's even better than the first, and there's a sneak peak at the back of MOTV. To the dismay of my wonderful editor, there's no release date yet.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
I want to spend that 24 hours in the Harry Potter realm. Because sometimes I think that Hogwarts taught me more than real school.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Coffee. I never drank the stuff before I started writing. Six years later and I get headaches without it. Ugh.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

To have the power to finally understand women. Oh boy would I like that.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?

I play rock saxophone. I actually moved to Austin, TX (live music capitol of the world!) to pursue the musicians' dream.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?

To my readers. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Author Daniel A. Cohen
Daniel A. Cohen was just your average business student. Microeconomics, finance, marketing… you name it, he had to do a PowerPoint presentation on it. One dark and stormy night, he was bitten by the radioactive realization that memorizing business jargon could possibly be the most boring activity known to man.

After gaining eagle-eye vision, abs that could grate cheese, and a talent for imagining things (including his cheese-grating abs), he wrote his first novel and began his epic battle against the formidable business jargon. He continues to fight the good fight by playing saxophone and writing YA fantasy, forever hoping his Veil trilogy will help inspire others to join his cause.

Colors Like Memories by Meradeth Houston

Julia has a secret: she killed the guy she loved. It was an accident—sort of.
Julia is a Sary, the soul of a child who died before taking her first breath. Without this 'breath of life' she and others like her must help those on the verge of suicide. It's a job Julia enjoyed, until the accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life—an accident she knows was her fault. If living with the guilt weren't enough, she's now assigned to help a girl dealing with the loss of her mother, something Julia is not exactly the best role model for. If she can't figure out a way to help her, Julia will lose her position in the Sary, something she swore to her boyfriend would never happen.

I've never been a big fan of talking about myself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about me:

I'm a California girl. This generally means I talk too fast and use "like" a lot.
I have my doctorate in molecular anthropology. Translation: I sequence dead people's DNA and spend a whole lot of time in a lab, which I love.
I've been writing since I was 11 years old. It's my hobby, my passion, and I'm so happy to get to share my work!
My other passion is teaching. There's nothing more fun than getting a classroom of college kids fired up about anthropology!
If I could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because I'm terrified of heights.

A neat article copied from Meradeth's site on the Author Moment:

The Author Moment

Small confession here: I don't tell a lot of people at home that I'm a writer. Aside from a few friends and coworkers, I don't think many people know about it. I try to avoid talking about it. I get kind of embarrassed when I try to explain what my book's about. Why this is, I don't know, but I'd guess it has something to do with being a rather private person, and hoping to avoid people looking at me like I'm a little more nuts than they already do.

To get even more personal, I had a really fun afternoon this past summer getting together with some girls I went to high school with. My old girl scout troop. Yeah, I was nerdy enough to be a scout all the way through school :) I had some wonderful friends in the troop and it was a great experience. Anyhow, we had a little reunion, and when it was my turn to say what I'd been up to for the past 10 years, I gave my little spiel and casually threw in that my book was coming out this May. Everyone stared at me, and finally one of the more vocal girls in the group went something along the lines of "Well, way to make us all feel great!" Yeah, I felt like a real dork. So I have kind of kept my mouth shut in my close circles.

Anyhow, the point of this post, is to note that I really think I've been ridiculously stupid. Hello! I've worked my a$ off to become a published author. I've had my share of tears, frustration, and deleting every last writing file off my hard-drive (oh yeah, I've done it!). And maybe because I've spent the last month in a new country, meeting new people, I've been proud to tell them that I'm an AUTHOR. My book is going to be published. I am stoked about this beyond all belief.

And it's felt pretty damn good :)

So, has anyone else experienced the Author Moment? The moment when you tell someone else that "hell yeah, I write books!" and really felt that awesome sense of pride in what you've accomplished? Because, really, I'm feeling it, and it's pretty dang nice.

Interview with Debbie Davies author of Any Love But Mine

Any Love But Mine
Any Love But Mine by Debbie Davies

The gods forbade her to love, but love is a powerful force ....
Acacia has been created purely for Eros' pleasure but discovers within moments of being summoned into his presence that he has no interest in her whatsoever.
Rejected, she is banished to Earth to serve as Eros' minion with the task of promoting the blissful state of love among all those around her, a state she must never indulge in with a human being herself on pain of immediate destruction.
And then comes Josh, someone whose power of attraction over Acacia is so intense she will find it utterly impossible to resist him.
But is he human? Is he a god? Or is he a trick of the gods?
And what would happen should they kiss?

Our Interview:

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
Any love but mine tells you the story of one girls (well goddesses) struggle to live the life she deserves and finding love in a screwed up world! But with secrets, deception and every type of immortal watching all her moves, she quickly realizes that all love leads to war.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I love greek mythology and one of my favorite myths is of Eros and Psyche and I just thought what if it didn’t go that way? From there my imagination went into overdrive and my Erosians were born.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
Most like to would be Luca (read the book you’ll know why) least like to would probably be, the obvious choice would be Hades but I'm going to say Hera. Hera is very self obsessed and I don’t think she’d be much company.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
My favorite series are The Demon Trappers by Jana Oliver. I always have time to read, this week I’ve read a book a day  and I have a to be read list that is getting longer and longer!
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?

I do have the outline to the sequel to Any love but mine and a couple of chapters written but no planned release dates as of yet!

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
Erm…..could I have a chapter an hour from 24 of my favorite books???? If I had to pick one and only one I’d pick Divergent because it’s a different world and I’d like to meet Four and eat some of the cake they go on about. I’d hope my 24hours would be up though before any of the fighting parts.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I like peace and quiet when I write, there’s always enough going on in my head without any other distractions but music was a huge influence for a lot of the chapters in my book. I would listen to a song and then write a chapter in no time from the songs inspiration. The dance scene in my book was completely inspired by Pixie Lotts ‘Dance with the enemy’ and a lot of the more romantic scenes were influenced by 30 seconds to mars especially the darker ones towards the end of the book.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

Invisibility!
--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?

I have an 18month old little boy who takes up all my free time; he’s very energetic so we’re usually outdoors somewhere with me chasing after him.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
Thank you to anyone and everyone who buys a copy of Any love but mine; I hope you enjoy it, I hope you fall in love with at least one character and hate at least two! And always believe that dreams can come true.

As they dig deeper into the mystery they must do so in front of the world while still protecting the secret of who they are and their lives in magic.

Our Interview:

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
The Wizard Guard, a magical police force is called in to solve the magical murder of the non magical princess.  But that’s only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I daydream a lot.  I started to develop the characters in my head and I just imagined them in different scenarios.  I think there was a news story on television about the royal family in England and I just thought, what would happen if magic killed one of them.  A very high profile murder and they have to keep magic a secret.  This idea stuck and I ran with the story.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I think it would be most interesting to have dinner with John Gibbs.  Even though he’s a second tier character, he’s pretty straightforward and honest.  He’s lived a long exciting life and I think he’d probably have some amazing stories to tell.
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
My most recent favorites are The Help and The Hunger Games.  I wish I had time to read.  It’s exhausting for me because now that I’m writing.  I find myself overly critical when I read.  I have a hard time reading for pleasure.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
She Wulf is my second book in the series.  The characters come back and because of their jobs as magical police officers, they run into new and stranger situations.  This story is far different than the murder mystery of the first book.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
If I could hang out at Hogwarts for a day and travel to Hogsmeade or the Diagon Alley, I think I’d be a happy camper.  Though I suppose I could do that at Universal Studios in Florida.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I need white noise when I write.  For me that’s television, usually sports programs, because there’s not much to see and I can have the white noise.
Katy Perry’s song Firework actually reminds me that it’s okay to have waited so long to finally write my book.  I was just waiting for the right door to open.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Telekinesis.  I’d love to be able to move things with my mind.  Without a wand though.  I would think that would be cumbersome.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I’m a creative person.  I love painting, interior design or arts and crafts.  I love being creative and using my hands to make something pretty or useful or decorative.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I love to suspend disbelief, make the impossible feel like it could be real.  It’s the stories that I enjoy, the stories that I like to tell.
Lightning round: this or that?
Vanilla or chocolate?              chocolate
Edward or Jacob?                   Jacob
Hockey or soccer?                   Neither
Ebook or paper?                      ebook
Salty or sweet?                        sweet
Beach or mountains?               beach
Phone call or email?                email
Early bird or night owl?          Night owl
Dog or cat?                             dog
Messy or neat?                        neat
Ninjas or pirates?                    Ninja Warriors on G4.  Great game show.

Sheryl Steines’ mind is chaotic and surprising and it shows in her writing.  Never one to sit back and see what may come, Sheryl is driven to write everyday. Somehow, amidst the chaos, she finds the time to volunteer and give talks to book clubs and students about her writing.  She even walked the Avon Breast Cancer walk two years in a row.
Sheryl’s series Annie Loves Cham is full of surprises and mystery.  Refusing to be restricted by genre Sheryl has taken the characters she loves and set them in new situations which test them and their friendships.  The second book in the series is set to release in late summer 2012.
Sheryl can be found on Twitter, Facebook, or her blog. She also encourages her readers to email her and let her know what you think of Annie and Cham!
