Gen Con 2018 - Day 3

Today I am sharing some images and thoughts from day 3 of Gen Con. Saturday was the biggest best day for me this year. Had some big sales and I don't recall many slow moments at the table. While people may not be able to get off work to be there Thursday and Friday, EVERYONE is there on Saturday. It was just a really solid, really busy day. If everyday at every convention was like Saturday there would never be a bad convention. That said, I would run out of things rather quickly. Good thing I am working on a book. While the day was busy, the night was where the excitement was.

Saturday night was the premiere of Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons & Dragons. EotB is a documentary about the history and people involved in the creation of Dungeons & Dragons art and I just so happened to be in it. The most excellent trio of Brian Stillman, Kelley Slagle, and Seth C. Polansky are responsible for the film and not only are they great people and friends, they made a really great film. I can not say enough good things about EotB. I may be bias, but it is a really solid film with a great narrative featuring all the people that made the D&D art what it is and launched the imaginations of many generations of artists and players. I can not wait till it is widely available so that everyone can see it. So good and so happy to have been able to see it at the premiere! RAWR!

Here are some images from Day 3 of Gen Con 2018...

The crowds are still at it even before the hall opens. I wonder if some of these people even moved from where they were days before.

The crowd amassed outside the main entrance into the hall.

The biggest miniature I have seen lately. This thing is gorgeous, but I just could not justify the expense. No where to put it and I would never get around to painting it.

Looking over the wall and the very busy art show.

And over the wall in the other direction.

Photos never do it justice. There were a LOT of people in the hall on Saturday.

A sketch on the back of a Magic card.

Got my hands on the new Steve Prescott sketchbook, complete with sketch!

This fellow is relevant to my interests!

Sending another painting to a good home!

 Another Magic sketch.

While I was not advertising that I was doing Pokemon sketches this year, if someone wanted one I would do them. Apparently someone in the art show told someone of my Pokemon sketches and I had to be true to my word.

The AWESOME glow in the dark EotB screening button that were given out. SO COOL!

Packed screening with standing room only!

Kelley, Seth, and Brian after the screening doing some Q&A.

The film makers and attending D&D artists in a nice group shot.

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here Tuesday for more coverage of Gen Con! Until then...

Gen Con 2017 Recap - Day 3

Continuing my coverage of Gen Con 50 we arrive at Saturday. For me, and I think many in the art show, Saturday was the slowest day. I think there were a lot of events and activities taking place elsewhere and everyone was super busy enjoying games and having fun. That said, if I had the Saturday that I had this year on any other day on any other year I would be thrilled. Compared to the rest of the weekend, it was the slowest day. A ton of the day for me was spent drawing. While I enjoy drawing at this point in the weekend I had done a ton of it and was getting a little tired of trying to help everyone AND work through a stack of sketches. But that is what I am there for so I do the best I can. While Saturday was somewhat more laid back in Gen Con excitement, Saturday night was when the artist go out on the town for some music, dancing, and fun. It has become a tradition and the crowd has steadily grown in size. I think the first year there were five of us and I lost count of the group this year. All in all it was another fun and adventure filled day at Gen Con 50. Here are some images from the day 3...

A little B Boy Pichu action for all your B Boy Pichu needs!

Some more Star Wars Destiny cards showed up to be signed.

A quick look around to see how the crowds looked.

A super cool Beholder puppet. The main eye moved around and the mouth worked. Always cool to see what is being made by folks. RAWR!

A set of four Marvel/DC sketch cards on game blanks. These were a little weird and not necessarily what I normally do. The Colts fan/Deadpool mashup was a little weird. They wanted me to do a Wonder Woman and I told them only if Wonder Woman could look like a man or a monsters.
They passed.

MORE Pokemon!

AND EVEN MORE Pokemon!

This person wanted a Magic artist proof with a female video game character on the back.
Mother Brain is a female character... so they got NES Metroid Mother Brain.

A final Pokemon for the day. Lapras is this person's favorite and they still have not caught one in Pokemon Go.

A Playmat full of rats. My contribution is the top right one. I saw it again once it was filled and it turned out super cool!

A look out at the crowds as we leave for the evening.

Gen Con is the best four days in gaming and sometimes I loose perspective on that since I spend all day in the artist alley. There is so much more to Gen Con than the massive exhibitor's hall (which contains the artist alley). There are many other halls, rooms, and even other venues that are not in the convention center filled with people gaming and having fun. Much of this goes on for 24 hours a day. The year before I started showing in the art show I came to Gen Con to check it all out. I ended up spending a lot of time in the art show talking to friends, but I did try to see a lot of what Gen Con had to offer. I know I only scratched the surface and Gen Con has grown so much since then. One of these days I will see a little but more of Gen Con... one of these days...

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here tomorrow for more Gen Con coverage! Until then...

Gen Con 2016 Recap - Day 3

My recap of Gen Con 2016 continues with some of the happenings in the Artist Alley during Day 3. If you missed it, you can check out Day 0, Day 1, and Day 2.

Saturday was a blur. Each day was busy in its own right, but Saturday always seems to be the BIG day. In the past two years I am also usually exhausted by Saturday, which isn't too good since it is the biggest day AND there is still Sunday and tear down. I commented to people that I woke up Saturday feeling like it was Sunday. By the time Saturday night rolled around and everyone was up for tons of fun, I dragged myself back to the hotel, reluctantly, for as much sleep as I could get. Gen Con takes its toll!

Here are some images that more or less make up my experiences of Day 3 of Gen Con 2016...

No matter when I walked past this hall, day or night, it looked just like this. A sea of people playing games and having fun. Makes me think I am missing out at Gen Con

The balloons are all done and there is a dragon and a throne of swords... and some kid.

Something new got announced at Gen Con for Imperial Assault... and I have work in it... that was also announced. More on this soon!

That beholder on plastic from yesterday is way at the bottom of a very large piece being auctioned off.

Snowman sketch card... and tentacles.

Thanks to my dear wife, this happen! RAWR!
That's Larry Elmore, by the way.
If you don't know who he is, you need to go look him you right now.

MORE Pokemon drawing... MAGIKARP!

MORE Magic cards to sign.

Jolteon joins the herd of Pokemon drawings.

Beholder on a playmat.

A neat orange and white grid playmat... that now has a weird little frog man on it.

Signed a *COUPLE* more Star Wars cards. One would think I have done some work on the Star Wars card game.

Ackbar is going to a new home!
Thanks, Jonathan! RAWR!

The widdlest Charmander of them all.

Everybody loves themselves some Zubats and Golbats... or not.

Another favorite from Gen Con, CHARIZARD! RAWR!

OH! New Star Wars card art released at Gen Con. More on this soon!

I choose you, other Pikachu!

Time to look over the wall again...

...Steve is right where I left him...

...looks like Jacob Walker is succumbing to the Gen Con madness...

...and Ralph does not seem too bad.

Rocketeer conga line!

There was a funny selfie backdrop set up at our hotel. There were even handheld props you could use in your photos. I just like the Pokemon fabric.

That is all for anther exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here tomorrow! Until then...
