Meet the team - Jaine Drake

Hello and welcome to the latest in our regular "Meet the Team" series, introducing some of the regular contributers to Craft Stamper. Today's designer is Jaine Drake...

Hello there, I’m Jaine Drake (stands up) and I’m a craftaholic. A day doesn’t go by without me doing something crafty. Whether it’s a bit of cutting and sticking or some sketching doesn’t matter, if I’m not doing something I get itchy fingers and have to relieve it with a bit of stash stroking.

I’ve been living the expat life in Luxembourg, which is a small country squashed between France, Belgium and Germany, for about twenty years now. It’s a small but utterly beautiful country covered with forest with tonnes of fantastic history. Most people tell me they’ve passed through it on their way somewhere else but really it’s totally worth stopping off. I live here with my husband and three grown up girlies in a small village which I’ve tried to make my little piece of England abroad.

I joined the Craft Stamper team at the end of 2011 and my first publication was in February 2012. It was such a big deal and I proudly showed off my pages at every opportunity. I still get a huge buzz when my contributor's copy comes in the letterbox.

Favourite project #1
I’ve started to feel more confident using my own drawings on projects which I’ll show on my blog and this canvas is one of those projects. It shows not only my own drawing but the texture I love and collage which I also like to do.

I suppose my stamping story goes right back to the 1990s when we lived then in the Middle East. I didn’t work and to pass the time joined a group of crafty ladies sewing and learning cross stitch. One American lady there brought some cards she’d made using stamps, I was amazed at how simple and beautiful they were, just one layer cards, simple stamping and some colouring in but I fell in love. The materials came from the US and were difficult to get hold of and at that time I was still trying out all sorts of other crafts including quilling but once we arrived back in Europe, I was introduced to it again and this time materials were much easier to find. My obsession had started.

Favourite project #2
Even though Christmas has passed, I still wanted to include the cards here. This was the second Christmas I’d been able to mass make cards using my own designs. I’m lucky enough to not only be on the Design Team with Sarah Hurley but also to have my own stamp range with her, something I’m absolutely thrilled about. The cards were simply stamped and water coloured mainly because when mass making cards it’s better to keep things simple but also water colour painting is a favourite way of adding colour for me.

Q: Do you have a signature style or favourite technique?
A:Over the years I’ve gone through many different styles from shabby chic and vintage to clean and simple testing them out but I always come back to a handful of colours and lots of texture in my work. Mixed media is my passion and I love the freedom it gives me to really go to town and create without restriction. I love colour, vibrancy and using texture paste most of all.

Favourite project #3
In the past I was also on the team of Scrap 365. Mini books have been a firm favourite of mine for many years and a lot of my hand made books have been made with paper bags. This paper bag book was decorated with a background stamp from Sarah Hurley and I’d also hand made my own washi tape.

Q: Where do you look for inspiration before you start on a project?
A: I’m a lover of Pinterest and I can easily spend a few hours looking through pretty pictures. It’s a constantly renewing source of inspiration from colour combinations to photo staging. I also have a sketchbook and an inspiration journal where I keep ideas and themes. I find these great places to go if I’m working on a project.

Thank you for reading and I hope you’ll visit me on my blog.

We hope you're enjoying the chance to get to know some of Craft Stamper's contributing designers; thanks for joining us!

Meet the team - Trish Latimer

Welcome to the latest in our regular series throwing the spotlight on some of the designers who create regularly for Craft Stamper. Mixed media with a quirky style and creative approach to all kinds of materials from fabric to wire and paint to book pages - it can only mean that today's spotlight falls on the highly talented and individual Trish Latimer...

Hello!

This feels weird…. A post about little old me on the blog, rather than me writing a post about someone else!

Anyway…hello out there! I’m Trish Latimer, and I’m a stamp-a-holic… (and a paint-a-holic as well I think!). My first project for Craft Stamper was in the middle of 2008, and I’ve been a regular ever since. I love sharing techniques, ideas and quirky weird stuff with all the CS readers, so long may it continue.

I blame shopping TV for my stamping addiction! Channel surfing on the sofa whilst at home feeding baby number 1, I stumbled across a stamping demo…was very intrigued and the rest is history! It’s actually quite scary thinking that was nearly 20 years ago, I certainly don’t feel old enough to have a baby about to leave her teens!

Favourite Project #1
I chose this one because the technique involved is really messy! I know if I’ve had a fun playtime creating if I’m so painty I need a shower afterwards!

Q: Do you have a signature style or favourite technique?
A: My style has evolved over the years into a messy, painty colourful kind of affair, with quirky figures, random quotes and (of course) plenty of stamping thrown in for good measure. I just love creating 3D assemblages, with Art Dolls being a firm favourite right now!

Favourite Project #2
I had to include an Art Doll, this is one of my favourites.

Q: Where do you look for inspiration before you start on a project?
A: My inspiration comes from all over the place. I think my brain stores up all sorts of ideas and images, then turns them into projects, which are guaranteed to pop into my brain just before I go to sleep! Luckily, the ideas are still there in the morning when I wake up!

Favourite Project #3
I really love exploring my bonkers side, and I think this meditating cat sums this up quite well!

Looking through all those old projects has me itching to get back into my studio to get the paints and stamps out again….so see you soon!

Meet the team - Riikka Kovasin

Welcome to the first "meet the team" feature for 2015!  I hope you enjoyed the festive season and have the new year off to a good start. Our designer in the spotlight today is Riikka...

Hi there Craft Stampers! My name is Riikka Kovasin and I'm from Helsinki, Finland. I'm married to the love of my life and we have two daughters together, aged 5 and 4. I joined the CS team little over a year ago, in November 2013 and have been creating for the magazine ever since. I was originally a part of the Scrap365 design team and then got asked to contribute to CS as well.

Like most crafty people, I assume, I've been doing different kinds of things my whole life. Paper crafts, sewing, knitting, painting... It took me a while to really find my favorite supplies but after my first daughter was born I got into scrapbooking and fell in love with all sorts of paper crafts. I had used stamps before in card making and still do occasionally, but my favorite way to use stamps is to create a background using them and layer them on top of each other. My "go to" ink is Archival Ink in either Jet Black or in my new favorite, Watering Can.

Favourite Project #1

I chose this project for many reasons. It has many of my favorite supplies in it, a stamp that I absolutely adore but I guess the main reason was the topic as it's a turning point in my life. Long story short, it's about a moment when I learned I was a crafter, a maker and followed my passion in my studies.

Q: Do you have a signature style or favourite technique?

A: I'm a mixed media influenced crafter so I absolutely love to get messy! I adore mists, gessos and inks and layer them on the same piece. I tend to use analogous or even monochromatic color scheme in my projects and simply adore people who can join opposite colors to the same craft.

I guess my favorite technique would include a pencil. It's not as much a technique than a little thing I usually do in my projects - add loosely drawn pencil circle around the focal point.

Favourite Project #2

This piece shows my love to layer. In this card there's acrylic paints, mists, PanPastels and inks. I love when I can get messy and just try out different mediums. On top I layered some epoxy butterflies, painted over them with gesso and then wiped the shapes clean again. This was so fun to make!

Q: Where do you look for inspiration before you start on a project?

A: Everywhere! Or maybe rather "nowhere" as I usually do not tend to look for any inspiration but let it find me. And it usually does find me and I end up in a situation with "more ideas than time".

But anything can inspire. It can be a color combination, a texture I've seen, a new supply that just needs to be tested or when I have a certain assignment to fulfill. You can find inspiration in the works of others or from your own creations!

Inspiration is actually a thing that really intrigues me and I've been writing a series of blog posts about the different sources I've used and am using (you can see the posts here). I also have an ongoing challenge together with Marsha Valk called "Inspired By" that also may shine some light on the process and how I draw inspiration before starting a piece (those challenges are here).

I chose these cards as my third favorite as they show my love for the different mediums but also as they represent my favorite color palette. Like the first project they also have some of my favorite mediums and brands  in them and as a little treat, these come up with a tutorial, too! You can see it here.

Thank you so much for letting me to share a few words and some of my favorite projects here at Craft Stamper blog! If you wish to visit me, my blog is called Paperiliitin (Finnish word meaning paper clip) and I also have several social media accounts. It would be fun to see you around! Wishing you all a pleasant day!

Many thanks to Riikka for sharing a little of her stamping story and some beautiful projects and thanks to you for joining us today, we hope you're enjoying finding out a bit more about some of the designers!
