June Journals Eileen Hull Collaboration!

Hello! This month Eileen Hull's Inspiration Team has an exciting opportunity to work with Belagio Cork Fabric in our June Journal creations. This collaboration has been lots of fun! (Did you miss the first installment of projects in last week's post?) This durable and user friendly fabric can be easily die cut, sewn by machine, combined with fabric, paper or pretty much any substrate you can think of. Thin sheets of real cork are laminated to a fabric backing so it is very flexible and durable. It is thinner that other cork sheets on the market but that is intentional to make it suitable for many different applications. It’s perfect for covering three dimensional projects like boxes, books, and home decor pieces. I know I really enjoyed using it to create this little notebook for my cousin's new baby:

I thought his parents might appreciate a little book they can write down all the "firsts" in and to record those baby moments and memories.

back of book
I used the cork fabric combined with printed cotton fabric. I can attest that the cork fabric does die cut and stitch beautifully! I love the foil shine on it; especially on the base layer that you see through the cut out moon and stars.

I covered pre-made little notebooks for the signatures.
How-to Tips:

1) First I cut pieces of Mat Board a little bigger than the final sizes of the covers and spine and then covered one side with the firefly fabric and the other side with the gold foiled cork fabric. (I used double sided adhesive sheets.) Then I used the Passport Book die to cut the two covers and spine.

Next I cut two pieces of the blue cork fabric slightly smaller than the covers so there would be a border of the base fabric. I used the moon and stars dies to cut out the shapes. The "B" is cut using Eileen's retired Block/Cube/Bank 3-D Die

2) I added decorative stitching to the "B" and edges before I glued the blue parts onto the cover. The mat board is thick and I didn't want to stitch all the way through it (and the adhesive) with my sewing machine.

3) The Passport Book Die also has a section on it for cutting pages to fit in the book. I already had pre-made little notebooks that fit perfectly so I used those. (Time saver!!) The covers were Christmas plaid so I definitely had to cover them!

I made little scalloped trim pieces from the cork fabric to decorate the edges of each signature. Again, I did the stitching on the pieces and then glued it onto the booklets. The covers were thin enough, but I had used adhesive sheets to stick the cardstock on and didn't want to gum up my sewing machine.

All ready to put together:

4) Binding! There are several ways you can bind these books. One of my favorite ways is to use elastic cord so you can just slip the signatures underneath the straps and they are held in perfectly.

Where can you find Belagio Cork Fabric?

• Hobby Lobby carries packaged cork in 18″ x 15″ pieces in 9 different patterns in the notions department.
• There are two types – a natural and a natural with gold at Walmart stores that have fabric departments. It is sold by the yard.
• As for the entire collection, many quilt and craft shops around the country carry it by the yard and in packaged 18″ x 15″ pieces.
• Online the Belagio cork fabric is available on Walmart.com and Amazon.com.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a great week and have a chance to do something crafty and creative. =) Be sure to check out Eileen's blog all this month to see what fab creations the Team has made to inspire you! I am also entering this into the June Mini Album Makers Challenge.

Topflight Stamps – Mermaid Passport Book

Hello there! I have a little Passport Book project to share with you today that I decorated with the Carabelle stamp set Zinouk of the Ocean. This whimsical set can be found at Topflight Stamps – your go to online store for unique art stamps and products sourced from companies worldwide.

When stamping the covers, I first created a base layer of Distress Oxide Inks and then tried a different stamping technique on top of it. Stacy at Tattered Nest Designs recently shared some Oxide techniques she saw Tim Holtz demo at a stamp show and I wanted to try the 'Smudging' technique on this cover. Basically, you stamp with Oxide ink and then immediately use a clean blending sponge to smudge the stamped image. It gives you a really soft look and I love how it turned out on my book covers. Perfect for 'underwater'. See Stacy's post for more info.

On to the main tutorial now…

Step 1 – I used Paper Artsy Infusions Dye to create some background sheets that I could cut up for the interior. I also used them to color the spine piece of the book.

Infusions Dye is a super concentrated dye in a granular form. It basically explodes with color when it comes into contact with water. I spritzed water onto mixed media paper and then sprinkled a little bit of powder onto it. A little goes a long way! I also sprayed a bit of Broken China Distress Spray Stain onto the pages to add a bit more blue.  The paper on the far right also has salt sprinkled on it. There is a technique in watercoloring where you sprinkle salt onto your wet wash and the crystals cause some very interesting effects as it dries. I wanted to see how they would react with the Infusion Dye. It turned out cool and added a speckled texture.

Not all the salt crystals brushed off when it was dry. Some
stuck tight but it added an interesting sparkle to the paper.
Step 2 – Decorating the spine. I wanted the outer edges to remain free of texture because that was where the front and back covers were going to be attached. I masked them off using washi tape. I then spritzed the spine with Resist Spray. (NOTE: When using Resist Spray you must spray it in a box or well protected area. The Spray sticks to everything. You will have trouble getting it off surfaces, even your non-stick craft mat.)

While the Spray was still wet, I sprinkled it with Deep Sea Baked Texture embossing powder, then heat set it.

Step 3 – I had heard that the Dollar Tree store was carrying mini composition books that fit perfectly into the Passport Book. I found some and they do! You can get a three pack of them for $1.00. Sold! I used my paper from Step 1 to cover the little books.

I made a little cardstock template to use as a pattern.
Step 4 – Assemble the cover. Easy peasy! I just glued the covers onto the edges of the spine piece right at the score folds.

Step 5 – String the cover and add the inserts. I used elastic cord. (NOTE: The Passport Die also includes a part where you can cut out pages to fit in your book. It cuts holes in the pages that correspond to the holes in the spine. See this past tutorial of mine to see how binding your book with this method works.)

Because I used the mini composition books as inserts, I couldn't use the center holes like normal because the inserts were too tall. I fiddled around with my elastic cord until I figured out a way to fasten it and have the cord run the whole height of the spine on the inside of the book.

I did trim those tails! ;-)
By using elastic cord, all you have to do to put in the inserts is to slide them under the elastic.

Whew! Did you make it through all of that? ;-) Thanks for stopping by! Check out Topflight Stamps and all the cool stuff they carry. My wish list is pretty long ha ha. They also regularly share fabulous projects done by the design team on their blog so don't miss out on that inspiration.

I am also adding this to the May challenge over at Mini Album Makers. Check out the good stuff to see there!

Throwback Thursday! Finding Atlantis Passport Journal

Welcome to a Throwback Thursday project! Today for Eileen Hull's Facebook Live show she shared how to create a Junk Journal using the Passport Book Die. Some of us on the Inspiration Team thought it would be fun to share some of our past projects using the die. This is a project I made last spring and one of my all time favorites. =) It's a long post so I cut out the tutorial. (See here for the original post.)

Also, we've started an Eileen Hull Fan Club Facebook Group! If you'd like to be inspired, share tips and tricks and your projects then it's the place for you! Just request to join and someone will add you right away. Everyone is welcome.

front
The cover is made from embossed brown Paper Leather (two layers glued together) with black Inksheet details (Instructions following. The spine is also Paper Leather covered with copper foil.

back
The inner pages are all cut from white Paper Leather, colored with Tea Dye Distress Ink using the Wrinkle Free Distress technique, and then stamped using various brown and black Ranger Archival Inks. I thought about taking a photo of the enormous pile of stamps I had out for all these inner pages but figured this post was long enough already lol.

The octopus image is made using a die and white Inksheet! The Inksheets act like a resist on your substrate and allow you to use thin dies like stamps! Instructions following…

I also discovered you can use stencils with the Inksheets. On these pages I used the Bare Branches stencil and a gold Inksheet to impress the branches onto the page (plus it acts as a resist!)

I've added bits of "ephemera" into the journal, like the author clipped in letters, sketches, maps and specimens.

Almost done!
