Autumn in the Pumpkin Patch - Fall Lantern Decor

Hello! If you're a follower of mine on Instagram (@creativejuicefreshsqueezed) you might have seen my progression of sneak peeks of this latest project! It's finally complete and I can show you the whole thing now. The little shack in its pumpkin patch was destined to reside in a lantern and become my newest fall decor piece:

and an even closer look:

The wee little scene is overshadowed by a tree full of fall color!

… which is wired up with Tiny Lights!

I had to make sure the outside of the lantern was beautiful too:

Leaf embellishments are made using the
Oak Leaf 3-D Embossing Impresslits from Sizzix. Love!

I am entering this into The Funkie Junkie Blog "Creating Die-Na-Mite" Challenge. My project definitely utilizes dies! Check out their challenges, they are always fun themes!

Scroll on if you'd like a little tutorial on how I put this together!

The shack is made using some of the Tim Holtz Village Die Series (retired). I didn't really chronicle its construction, Tim has done several videos on how to put them together. I will note that the siding is inked Distress Woodgrain Cardstock cut into strips and the roof is metal tape on cardstock and then embossed with the new Mini Foundry 3-D Embossing Folder (absolutely perfect!!)

On to the base!
Step 1 - I cut a piece foam to fit in the bottom of the lantern and then built up areas of elevation with more foam and cardboard. I usually cover my base with plaster cloth to fill in the contours and make more textures. You can find it in the model/train sections of craft stores.

The tree I made according to a tutorial shared by Lucy Foxworth on her Paper Glitter Glue blog. Her instructions are great and easily adaptable to whatever tree shape you want to make. Check it out! I made my tree tall with arching branches because I knew I wanted to have large leaves hanging down in the foreground of the scene. I was playing with scale and forced perspective so the tree is larger and "out of scale" to the house but I think it works.

Step 2 - I painted the base and then added bits of moss and lichen from my landscaping stuff stash.

The pumpkins are actually seed pods I painted "pumpkin" colors.

Step 3 - Glued the pumpkins into the 'patch'! To help with the illusion of perspective I picked bigger pumpkins for the front and then put the tiniest ones in the back next the shack.

Step 4 - Wired the tree: I used two strands of Tiny Lights to wrap around the branches. My plan was to hide the battery/switch parts in the top of the lantern (photo later).

Step 5 - Leaves: I chose to cut my leaves out of colored coffee filters. I use filters a lot for making foliage and flowers. It dyes readily and has the look of tissue but is stronger. In this case, I wanted a substrate that would also allow the lights to shine through it. Tip: you can cut through several layers of filter paper at a time, both with steel rule and Thinlits dies. That made it easy to cut out lots of leaves at once!

Tree with die cut leaves:

At this stage, I popped the scene back into the lantern. Fortunately, this particular lantern had a metal top that was just screwed on. I was able to take it off and easily lift the scene in and out. I always find it easier to build scenes using a 'top loading' container so you can complete it outside of the container and then just pop it in. It doesn't always work out that way, but it's a plus when it does!

Step 6 - I put the lantern top back on and glued pieces of velcro into the top. I glued matching pieces onto the backs of the light controls. They tuck right in there out of sight!

Last but not least, I'll leave you with a detail photo of the tin roof because I love it so much. Yum!

Thanks for stopping by!!

Mini Gingerbread House Christmas Decor!

Merry almost Christmas! I still have lots of ideas for Christmas projects I want to make but we'll see how many of them get completed. That always seems to be the pattern lol. I think I need to start in July. At any rate, here is a fun one. I built this little scene inside of a vintage nut dish I found thrifting somewhere. I've been staring at it sitting there for a few months now and this idea popped into my head. I wanted to try a more limited color palette so I went with kraft, white, red and green.

The gingerbread house lifts off the base and you can fit a battery powered tea light underneath for a nice flicker effect. The house is made with the retired Tim Holtz Village Dwelling and Village Gingerbread dies. I also used two other retired die sets to create the cookie tree and mini gingerbread man for the landscape.

I got the lollypop and other Christmas picks from Hobby Lobby I think. I used the balls to decorate the gold bottle brush trees. It pays to have a stash! It makes it easy when doing projects like this - I didn't even have to leave my house.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a great rest of the week and have a chance to squeeze some creativity in.

I am also entering this into the Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog's current challenge, "Deck the Halls". It runs until Tuesday night so you have a chance to enter too.

Village Church at Christmastime

My Tim Holtz Village Dwelling love continues! In case you missed it, I completed a huge Halloween Village project last month and now I'm turning my attention to Christmas projects. I made a little old fashioned country church scene for a crystal base I found at the thrift store. The church lifts off so you can put a battery tea light underneath.

I used heavyweight card stock for the structure of the house and then used the Notebook embossing folder to make "siding" pieces to go on all the walls. All the dies are from Tim Holtz's Village Die series.

The windows are scrap plastic colored with alcohol ink and coated with Stickles Rock Candy for extra sparkle.

I love the look of the light inside! Use a battery powered tea light.

Thanks for stopping by! I'm entering this into the Timeworn challenge on the Frilly & Funkie blog. Churches like this one are certainly from a by-gone era. =)

Happy Birthday to A Vintage Journey!

Hello, I'm honored to be a guest on the A Vintage Journey blog today and to help celebrate its 3rd birthday! If you came from there, welcome and here's the scoop on how I put this all together. My wee little fairy house is tucked in so nicely in its woodland lantern home.

 Top view:

To add the texture to the plain, boring metal lantern, I brushed on Prima's Clear Crackle Texture Paste. When it was dry I used a combination of different green Distress Paints and a wash of watered down DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic Sap Green to make it look mossy and worn. The wash soaks into all the crackle texture and makes it stand out.

The house is created with Tim Holtz's Village Collection dies. I love these little houses! You start out with the base Village Dwelling and then there all sorts of accessory dies to change it up. I used the Village Surf Shack die for the porch and the Village Gingerbread and Village Bungalow for the window treatments. For the siding, Tim Holtz has an excellent video tutorial on how to make it from the Distress Woodgrain Cardstock. It's at the end of his Halloween Village Manor video but it worked perfectly for this project with more fairy appropriate colors of course (pink, brown, green and Perfect Pearls mist for shimmer).

The roof I made from some white paper Prima leaves I colored with Distress Sprays. There were three different sizes in the package so I just played around with placement and where to trim to make everything fit.

Inside the lantern I made a base of styrofoam and foam core board pieces to build up the "fairy hill".

I used pieces of sheet moss (purchased at the craft store) to fill in the gaps and cover the base. I worked from back to front adding the moss (glue gun made it easy!) and the little flowers, mushrooms and other details.

Can't get to the back once the house is in!

Here all the rear elements were in place so I glued the house in. I started working on the sides and then finished with the front. Here are some more final details of the interior (warning, a bunch more photos!):

The flowers are a combo of silk flowers, Prima paper flowers and
handmade ones cut with the Tiny Tattered Florals dies.

I added little lace curtains in the windows.

The vintage mushrooms are from my stash.

Wait, there's more! (Lots to see. ;-) )

Whew, that was a long post! Thanks for hanging in there. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the A Vintage Journey March Challenge "All Aboard". There is no theme this time, they just want you to join in and help them celebrate their birthday. =)

I'm also entering this into the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge, Handmade Flowers (for the little Tiny Tattered Florals my fairy is growing) and the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge, Bit O' Green (lots of green here and I'm sure the fairy has leprechaun friends).

I'm also now on Instagram! (finally!!) You can find me @creativejuicefreshsqueezed if you'd like to keep tabs on me that way.
