Being An Adult

Means Seeing Reality.

Our employment, jobs, careers, whatever you wish to call the source of your income, are an enormous part of our lives. The alternatives to working for a living a limited and unacceptable to most reasonable people. Sometimes things are great, sometimes they are terrible, there are often bumps in the road, and people get into slumps, get burned out, or sometimes just need a break from it all.

Most people will happily grind along if they feel adequately compensated, and sufficiently appreciated. Morale rides high, and turn over is slow. Which brings me to this, probably the most detrimental thing any manager can do to morale is let slip the notion that every single one of his employees is replaceable. Immediately replaceable, and that he would just as soon see you go than stay. If you treat people like machines, you get machines. Machines only give the required output, nothing more. Machines don't strive for more, or to be better. They are simply machines which care nothing for you, your mission, or the professional goals which you cannot truly reach without the people below you working for you.

Sure, people know there are others who would fill their spot were they to leave their post. That is not what I am referring to, I am speaking of an attitude which if allowed to prevail will bring the morale of the people working below to its knees. One might say, who cares about morale, people are paid to do a job, they can do it or move on. Sure, that is true, but low morale is a poison which festers and brings the whole group down. New people are immediately brought into the fold, and are exposed to the negativity right away. It leads to bickering at best, and back biting at worst. These are not good conditions, they do not promote productivity.

All of this does nothing to promote team work. Yes, I hate the team team team go TEAM cheerleading as much as the next person, but teamwork is necessary to any group working towards the same ultimate goals. Being an adult means, find another job, or suck it up and get through it hoping for better days. That is the reality of the thing. Do your best no matter how many roadblocks are hurled at you. And try to keep your mouth shut.

  1. It always tickled me how much in common there is between the corporate slogans and the communist ones...
