THURSDAY: A string of major Oscar noms!

THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2025

In our view, an extreme disappointment: On this, the very day we saw it, the film in question received a string of major Oscar nominations:

Best Picture: A Complete Unknown
Best Director: James Mangold
Best Actor: Timothée Chalamet
Best Supporting Actress: Monica Barbaro
Best Supporting Actor: Edward Norton
Best Adapted Screenplay: James Mangold and Jay Cocks

Best Director is especially striking. As many people have noted by now, the Academy dispenses ten nominations for Best Picture, only five for Best Director.

We were prepared to be surprised. But the film struck us as what you might call a highly instructive disaster.

Others will disagree with our view. We thought the film was cosmically poor, but a bit of a sign of the times.

"Sorry, Odetta," one character says during the semi-brawl at Newport.

"Sorry, Odetta," the character says. We sighed and we covered our eyes.

Others will disagree with our view. At some point, we'll try to explain.

  1. I thought the film was a disappointment too, but I'll bet our reasons are different.

  3. Edward Norton deserved his supporting actor nomination, in my opinion. He is a lot like Pete Seeger without giving the impression that he is only imitating him. His portrayal seems authentic and a fully realized character.

Smart, time saving move on Bob's part.

    1. "The film follows Manitas Del Monte, a drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to become Emilia Pérez, subsequently faking her own death and attempting to reconnect with her family."

Why is it funny that a transwoman in real life would play the role of a transwoman in a film, so well that she was nominated for an oscar? Maybe you should watch the film before deciding how funny you think the nomination was.

    2. Peter Dinklage always plays the roles of short men, after all, and he has received 91 award nominations in his career.

    3. Being hairy and having broad shoulders doesn't seem like as much of an advantage in playing women's roles, as it is in tennis.

    4. There is no such thing as a "transwoman." Obviously it is hilarious to nominate a man for a woman's category.

    5. Why is it hilarious when she did a good job playing the role?

      Delete
    6. Because he is a man in a woman's category. Men aren't women.

    7. Who should play the role of a transwoman then, a man or a woman?

    8. And why is it funny?

  6. "Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) reportedly summoned law enforcement on Thursday over "a guy" who entered a women's restroom in the Capitol — that turned out to be a false alarm.

According to Bloomberg News congressional reporter Billy House, "Rep. Lauren Boebert bursting out of the House Women's restroom during this afternoon's vote series, complaining to security personnel stationed in the nearby Speakers Lobby of 'a guy' inside the bathroom."

House monitored who exited the bathroom after the spectacle, but all appeared to be women." [Rawstory]

Boebert later acknowledged that she had been mistaken.

I'm so proud of my state's elected House Member, doing her job as well as she can for the people of CO. If there had been a man in the ladie's room, she would have made sure everyone knew about it, and that is so important to the functioning of our government. /sarcasm off

  7. FBI Knew Hunter Biden Laptop Was 100% Real
January 23, 2025 at 9:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

The FBI met with social media platforms over 30 times in 2020 to "prebunk" allegations about the Hunter Biden laptop story. even though they knew the laptop was 100% real in late 2019. Facebook and Twitter were forced to censor the story after dirty Feds withheld what they really knew from the platforms. The FBI warned multiple times that a "hack-and-leak" story involving Hunter Biden was set to drop in October 2020. Google did not censor the story because its threat analysis group found no evidence whatsoever of a hack.

Government officials, including those from the FBI, communicated with social media platforms to censor posts related to the Hunter Biden laptop story. The laptop contained documents showing Hunter Biden’s business dealings and involvement with foreign companies such as a Ukrainian energy firm and companies in China which raked in over 20 million dollars during the exact time his father was Vice President. The Supreme Court found there was not sufficient evidence to prove that the FBI's insistence of flagging stories about the laptop amounted to coercion because the people suing couldn't show how they were personally harmed.
