Art Basel Miami and Design Miami, 2012

Mark your calendars because Art Basel Miami and Design Miami are around the corner. Design Miami is growing quickly with a 25% increase in galleries exhibiting since last year. Both emerging and iconic design work from all over the world will be exhibited, but there will be a greater focus on American Design this year. The event will take place in Miami, Florida, December 5-9, 2012.

In addition to the first-time participation of Chicago-based Volume Gallery and Philadelphia-based Moderne Gallery, exhibitor Mark McDonald from Hudson will mount an homage to the Eames House, while R 20th Century will show works by Wendell Castle, the pioneer of the American studio furniture movement, and Carpenters Workshop Gallery presents lighting by Johanna Grawunder. Just a taste shown below!

Home Anthology, Great Place to Shop

Rob and Nini started out by simply trying to furnish their home with interesting pieces at a modest price. This morphed into Home Anthology in 2002, which was a small selling space in an antique co-op filled with a mix of styles. Today, Home Anthology is a 5,000 square-foot space in Maryland, with a focus on mid-century modern design.

Their buying criteria... it has to be something they love and would put into their own home. In my opinion, they're gem finders. Add this to your list of regular online visits, and if you're ever in Baltimore, they're only 15 minutes away.

Miami Design District, Jeff Jones Lighting at NOW

Now, A Style Store, is a great find in Miami's Design District. They carry a mix of products from lighting, to furniture, to pottery... One designer of note is Jeff Jones, whose lighting uses a mix of industrial and organic materials to create a nice juxtaposition. Wood, concrete, iron, steel, electrical cords, in a variety of colors, and found objects create interesting designs that you can modify, with the designer, to meet your needs. They are a refreshing change from the often seen, mass produced and spare lighting in many design stores these days.

Clean & Sleek, By David Weeks

David Weeks designs lighting in sublime, modern forms. The minimal and sleek look of his lighting designs are perfect for private or public spaces. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, he formed David Weeks Studio in 1996 in the wonderful DUMBO section of Brooklyn. He uses his background in sculpture to create clean lined perfection. Photos from David Weeks Studio web site include the following credits: Magdalena Keck Interior Design/photo by Jeff Cate, Chris Choy Design, Rees Roberts & Partners LLC.
