Bikes On the Subway?

[From article]
I got on the 4 train at Fulton Street. At Astor Place, a short, muscular guy in tight black Lycra shorts pushed his stupid peeling, white bike into the car next to me.
He almost hit me but didn't. I wondered if I should punch him if he did. I never punch anybody except in the ring, but I am always fighting imaginary fights in my mind.
Probably not too bright to think of street fighting. Most of these guys carry weapons.
[. . .]
I thought bikes were used up in the streets to prevent pollution. I thought they were used for exercise, to keep in shape. What the hell was he doing here, causing congestion in an already crowded train?
Bikes should not be allowed on the train. Or if allowed, the MTA should charge extra for them. They take up space for about two people plus the rider. Instead of charging $2.75, he and his bike should be charged $11.
[. . .]
Why not let the jerks bring kiddy pools with them so they can take a dip when they are bored?

Limited Vision Of Massachusetts Officials On How To Improve Mass Transit

Future New York subway cars could look a lot more like the London Tube and Paris Metro, a new design released by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has revealed.

New York City (a real world class city), has adopted an idea from the far east to increase subway capacity by ten percent. NYC's system carries about 6 million each weekday. If only some MA state and local officials would read about the world, they might learn something outside of their bubble. Here's a recent report on NYC's plans.

Sex Crimes Increase on New York City Subways

Crowded subway cars can make passengers vulnerable to gropers, flashers and voyeurs.

[From article]
Sex crimes on the city’s subways have soared by nearly 20 percent this year, due to a surge in the number of gropers, flashers and voyeurs, NYPD officials said on Monday.
“I think everyone has a subway horror story,’’ said straphanger Ashley Ezparda, 27, of Jackson Heights, Queens,
[. . .]
The most common offenses are forcible touching, lewdness and unwanted surveillance, NYPD Deputy Chief Vincent Coogan told MTA officials at a meeting.
Coogan said the rising number of complaints stems partly from riders getting more serious about inappropriate behavior and reporting it.
He said cops have been able to make arrests in more than half the cases — an increase in busts — because more straphangers are snapping cellphone photos of perpetrators.
For example, earlier this month, police were able to arrest a Level 3 sex offender — the most dangerous — because one of his victims took his photo as he grabbed women aboard trains and on platforms, Coogan said.
The vigilant straphanger, whom the creep smacked from beneath a bench slat at Columbus Circle on Nov. 27, promptly handed her cellphone shot over to cops, and officers then spotted him preying on another woman a week later in the same crowded station, the deputy chief said.
The suspect, Roger Reid — who has 31 previous arrests, almost all for subway sex crimes — was promptly busted.

New Midtown IRT No. 7 Station, But Still Worst Subway Line

[From article]
The No. 7 train just opened its 22nd subway station this week in the Hudson Yards at West 34th Street and 11th Avenue in Manhattan.
But while the station was hailed for its design and sweeping mosaics, the line’s 52nd Street station in Queens takes the cake for being the worst station in the entire system, with a whopping 79 percent of its structural components in bad shape, the study found.
“This is one of the most neglected stations in the area,” said straphanger Michelle Vasquez of Woodside, Queens.
[. . .]
By contrast, the No. 6 line received the best reviews, with only 15 percent of structural components across its 38 stations requiring attention.
The study also projected that, based on the MTA’s current spending, New York’s subway lines would not be up to snuff until 2067.
[. . .]
A recent report by the same group found that 24 percent of all structural elements across New York’s 467 subway stations are in disrepair.

Two Killed on LIRR Tracks In Queens, NY

[From article]
A local commuter who asked to only be identified as Al, 61, said he often sees young people hanging out on the tracks.
“At nights the trains are silent and they are quick so you really don’t have time to spin around. You are gonna get hurt,” he added.
“There should be cops placed up there,” said Harry Raj, 53, an auto body repair worker who lives nearby. “It is easy to get to and it’s isolated. People are always up there all hours of the night. I’m not surprised it happened.”
Their bodies were discovered 200 feet east of of the Hollis platform and the engineer did attempt to stop, but it was too late, the MTA said.
“This location is known to have kids playing on the tracks all the time,” said Raj.
According to the MTA website, the train, which left from Ronkonkoma at 1:46 a.m., was scheduled to arrive at Penn Station at 3:05 a.m. but the accident caused major delays.

Vandals Steal Copper Wire, Disrupt A and C Lines in New York City Subway

[From article]
It "led to delays and crowding along all 31 miles of the A train, and forced thousands of Rockaways customers to use shuttle buses to get to work,” MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco said in a statement.
[. . .]
A train service will be suspended and replaced by shuttle buses on Wednesday around 10 p.m. so the agency can conduct emergency repair work overnight, an MTA spokesman said. A train service will be back to normal by Thursday morning, the spokesman said.
The cable theft also disrupted service along the entire C line as it prevented some trains from turning around or from getting out of the storage space in Rockaway Park yard, the MTA said.
[. . .]
The cable theft was discovered at 11:22 p.m. Tuesday night when a northbound A train lost power north of the Howard Beach station.

Police Arrest Teens Vandalizing NYC Subway System

[From article]
Police have arrested seven teenagers in the last three months, on accusations that they committed acts of vandalism on the subways.
The group, known as the Subway Conquestors, has been implicated in several incidents in recent months.
In the latest video posted to YouTube, the group sneaks onto a darkened train at an unknown location and begins manipulating doors. An announcement and digital map indicate that the train is set to run as a D Train, but the train is of a newer model than those actually used on the D line.
D.J. Hammers, who uploaded the video, alleged that they used stolen subway keys.

“Somehow she ended up in this strange and unfamiliar place,” said Alan Brody, a native of Durban, South Africa. “I once drove there in that area two years ago, and I remember thinking, ‘This looks like my old home in Africa,’ and I was also thinking, ‘Are you kidding me? Who could imagine a major commuter railroad running through this? How could it?’”

Chaos: Emergency crews stand outside the train, while concerned passengers line up inside one of its cars.

[From article]
At least seven people were killed Tuesday after a Metro-North commuter train struck a car just north of the train station, according to officials.
At least 12 others were said to be injured in the crash.
Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, had said earlier the victims included the driver of the car, a woman who was outside of her vehicle when the crash occurred, and five people on board the train. But later Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino tweeted that there were at least seven people killed.
The fiery scene began to unfold about 6:30 p.m. when the Harlem Line train out of Grand Central Terminal struck the black Jeep Cherokee at the narrow, two-lane Commerce Street crossing, causing an explosion that engulfed both the car and the train.

Evacuation: Following the crash, the first three cars of the train were evacuated via ladder. Many were crying and screaming. Above, a man from a car toward the back of the train is helped out of it by emergency crews.

Hidden Cameras in NYC Subways

Besides the hidden cameras, typical domed cameras are littered through the subway system.

Some of the pipes above your head in NYC’s subway stations are actually hidden cameras.
Photo: J.C.Rice

[From article]
The cameras date to as far back as the 1990s, MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said, but the agency revealed it prefers using other, equally covert “enhanced equipment” — even better cameras “that serve in a number of various capacities.”
Besides the hidden cameras, typical domed cameras are littered through the subway system.
The MTA described the cams as “antiquated” — yet some of the cameras found by The Post appeared to be housed in brand-new metal casings.
“They are covert cameras for high-priority areas or high crime,” one source noted. “They record, but can be monitored real-time if it’s deemed necessary.”
[. . .]
In all, there are more than 4,500 cameras throughout the subway system, according to the MTA.
Experts marveled at the cameras, which are housed in what look like electrical conduits.
“These are fascinating,” said Robert McCrie, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s Department of Security, Fire and Emergency Management. “What we are seeing is something very well adapted to the circumstance — not only in the sense that they look like a part of the industrial environment of the MTA, but also in the sense that they are positioned in ways to get people’s heads and shoulders.
“These add something different because the perp isn’t looking for it — because he doesn’t know what to look for,” the professor added.

Construction Drill Misses NYC Subway Car By Inches

On inspection, MTA workers discovered that the drill had broken through the roof of the tunnel and was just inches from the side of the train

[From article]
New York Subway train packed with passengers had a lucky escape on Thursday when an enormous drill bit narrowly avoided ripping into one of the F train carriages.
The incident happened as the train was pulling out of the 21st Street-Queensbridge station in Long Island City just before noon. The giant bit, which measures 10 inches in diameter, shattered the glass of several of the train’s windows and gouged at its steel frame, the MTA has confirmed.

Updated: Man Slaps Woman On NYC Subway, After Her Relentless Insults, Brawl Results, Arrests Made, Charges Dropped

[From article]
The man in the 8-ball jacket seen slapping a belligerent woman on the F train in an online video that went viral had all charges against him dropped Monday afternoon after authorities determined he was acting in self-defense, his lawyer told The Post.
Jorge Pena spent four nights in jail after the brawl, which was widely viewed after footage was posted to YouTube, before making his $1,000 bail early Tuesday.
A law enforcement source confirmed that all the charges against Pena were dismissed.

Pena’s lawyer, Cary London, said he thinks the charges were thrown out because the woman in the video appeared to be the aggressor.
“This time the system worked,” London said.
“Thank God for smartphones because the DA’s office was able to have all of the information in front of them at an early stage to show that our client did nothing wrong and acted in self-defense.”

The video shows a woman and her friends laughing at and taunting a man while on the train between the Broadway-Lafayette and West Fourth Street stations early Saturday.
“You got a wack— 8-ball jacket that came out in 1990,” Danay Howard, 21, yells at the man. “Get your money game up.”
Howard and two of her friends then notice another man filming the exchange with his cellphone. They run after him and one of them smacks the phone out of his hand.
The women then go back to insulting the man’s clothes, at which point Howard slaps the man from behind with her purse.
That’s when Kevin Gil, wearing the 8-ball jacket, turns around and smacks Howard hard across the face, knocking her off her feet.

A woman was killed by a train Saturday when she fell from the platform onto the tracks at a busy Manhattan subway station, authorities said.
The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, appeared to have been intoxicated, said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz.
A police officer at the scene said the woman, who may have been distracted because she was using a cell phone, could have been accidentally bumped by a fellow passenger just as a Brooklyn-bound 4 train approached the Union Square station at about 3:30 p.m.

NYC Subway Board Bans Ads That may Incite Violence. Huh?

Local police in Dearborn MI did the same thing when Christians held signs promoting Jesus on public property near a Muslim festival. The police told the Christians they would get beaten if they did not leave. This is another example of negligent training of police and public officials. Sharpton sues the NYPD for that regularly. As stated herein the police must protect the speaker not the heckler. However it appears that the MTA board now supports Sharia Law over the US Constitution.

The real reason the MTA arrested him was he was reducing their income. Slippage is big business by government and corporations. Cash cards often expire and don't get used.
