Top Tie Facts


Ties, Bow Ties and other neck wear are an extremely popular fashion accessory, they are often worn as part of a uniform, to ensure you look professional or just to add that something extra to an outfit. We have put together a list of a few interesting facts about ties. 


  • The beginning of the necktie comes from The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) when Croatian soldiers wore small dotted neckerchiefs. 
  • The most expensive tie was made from pure silk, 150 grams of gold and 271 diamonds and was designed by Satya Paul Design Studio.

  • International necktie day is celebrated on 18th October in Croatia and several cities around the world such as Dublin, Sydney and Tokyo. 
  • In history a thick form of tie was worn in war to protect the blood vessels in the neck from sword thrusts.
  • A collector of neckties is called a grabatoloigist. 
  • There is a building in Denmark shaped like a bow tie.

  • The modern tie was patented by Jesse Langsdorf in 1924.
  • A form of tie was worn on Chinese emperor Shih Huang Ti's terracotta warriors in 210 BC
  • British ties usually have diagonal stripes which run from the top left to the bottom right and in America the stripes run from to right to bottom left. 
  • After the second world war tie widths increased to 4.5 inches but started to slim down again in the 1950's. Since the start of the 21st century a regular tie is generally around 3.5 inches wide.
  • The worlds biggest bow tie is the size of  a great white shark.
