Unfinished Business: The False Positives - "Long Distance Romance"

This is going to be one of those years where I can't start reviewing new releases until I tie up some of the previous year's loose ends. The False Positives are a band I've reviewed a few times. I meant to review their latest single, "Long Distance Romance," when it came out last summer. But then I got sidetracked by real-life stuff and just spaced on it. That's a shame because this is a quintessential Faster & Louder type release. Dave has assembled a new, Boston-based False Positives lineup which includes Pete Cassani on lead guitar, Carl Biancucci on bass, and Stephen Hart on drums. Sure enough, "Long Distance Romance" brings to mind classic Boston garage power pop rock 'n' roll — with muscular guitars and big hooks. Lyrically, this an interesting reflection on the trials and tribulations of long-distance relationships — and whatever it is that makes people willing to endure them. The new lineup is sounding great, and that shows considerable promise for future releases from The False Positives! Check out this track if you like some power in your pop!

The Midnight Confessions - Introducing...The Midnight Confessions

Brooklyn's The Midnight Confessions have gifted us with one of those really excellent late-in-the-year album releases that sometimes people sleep on because they've got other things on their mind. As I started looking deeper into this band, I noticed familiar names from a couple of bands I really liked back in the 2010s: Party Lights and The Recordettes. So it's hardly a surprise that I would be into The Midnight Confessions. This band takes the best elements of the past 70 years of rock 'n' roll and creates something that still sounds vital and current as we sit on the doorstep of 2025. I can hear the influence of everything from early rock 'n' roll to '60s girl groups to power pop to glam rock to country to garage rock. Since the name of the album is Introducing...The Midnight Confessions, let's introduce The Midnight Confessions! They are Anna Blumenthal (guitar, vocals), Margot Bianca (keys), Sacha Chernoff (bass), Carl Porcaro (guitar), and Ryan Gordon (drums). They're into sequin, leather, harmonies, and big gooey hooks. Introducing...The Midnight Confessions leads off with the two pre-album singles: "When You Were Mine" and "Break My Bones." They're both great, of course, but there's plenty left in the tank after the auspicious start. "In My Dreams" is an elegant, heartfelt ballad. "Missteps and Misfires" is a quality rocker that will get the power pop lovers' juices flowing. The cool country rocker "You're Not the Man for Me (But I Don't Mind)" is a major highlight. "You Know What To Do" pours on the girl group magic. "The Same Old Way" is the grand, dramatic closer that every great rock album ought to have. You can feel the soul of New York in these songs, with hints of everyone from The Shangri-Las to The New York Dolls to Blondie. The songwriting is top-notch all the way through, and somehow this band combines arena-sized majesty with indie band intimacy. Don't miss this one!

The Bacarrudas - "Wanamaker's Christmas"

The Bacarrudas, who released the delightful Pool Party earlier this year, are the winners of this year's "Which Christmas release will I review first?" sweepstakes. New single "Wanamaker's Christmas" finds lead singer Adam Rabuck reminiscing about a favorite childhood memory — partaking in the annual Christmas festivities at the John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. When it comes to reviewing Christmas music, I tend to be selective. I usually ask myself two things: A) Would I enjoy this music even if it were not Christmas-themed? and B) Does this add something of value to the vast ocean of existing Christmas music? In the case of The Bacarrudas' "Wanamaker's Christmas," that's a double yes!

As far as I know, there has never been a song about the Wanamaker's Christmas tradition in Philadelphia. And if there has been one, it certainly wasn't recorded by a frat rock band. "Wanamaker's Christmas" is everything I hoped it would be: joyful, triumphant, nostalgic, and a whole lot of fun. Adam does a great job of painting a picture here. Just listening to the song's lyrics, you can visualize how thrilling it would have been for a kid to experience Christmas at Wanamaker's every year. If you have personal memories of Wanamaker's Christmases, this song will give you all the feels. And even if you haven't, you will likely be reminded of similar memories from your own childhood Christmases. This song instantly joins my list of Christmas songs I have to hear every year. It's a new standard! On the virtual flipside, "Christmas with the Cat" belongs to that time-honored tradition of sad Christmas songs. I suppose this is Adam's own version of "Blue Christmas." This song will totally tear your heart out. But if you have to hear a song about being alone and lonely at Christmas, doesn't the involvement of cats make the pill much less bitter to swallow? Cats make everything better. In the spirit of the season, The Bacarrudas have made "Wanamaker's Christmas" a free download from Bandcamp. Check it out, and be sure to give Pool Party a listen while you're hanging out on The Bacarrudas' Bandcamp page. Have a Schuylkill duylkill Christmas!

The Ape-ettes - No Matter What

Now this is how you follow up a great record — with an even greater record! The Ape-ettes from Sudbury, Ontario released a terrific EP last year called Simply. Now Julie, Andrée, and Melanie are back with another crackling 7" record called No Matter What. Style-wise, this is more of the same: high energy garage rock with a punk rock attitude and a strong pop sensibility. What could be better than that? Julie excels at writing catchy, super-fun tunes that are also thoughtful and clever. From a quality standpoint, this is the mark that all EPs ought to hit. Each of these three tracks is A-side worthy and guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. At what point do we all acknowledge that this is one of the best bands out there? If you're seeking music that will make you wanna dance around the house and shout "Yeah!" while you also reflect on what's important in life, No Matter What is definitely the record for you. Vinyl is available from Discos De Muerte in Mexico and Snappy Little Numbers in the U.S.A.!

Taxi Girls - Rainy

Now here's a record I've been waiting for all year: the second vinyl release from the mighty Taxi Girls! This band had my top-ranked EP of last year, and it's on track to have my top-ranked single of this year. That single is called "Rainy," and I can't talk about it without invoking the dreaded "double A-side" cliché. One song is a kick-ass rocker, and the other is an old school punk rock sing-along. They're equally great, so the determination of which one is the "hit" will come down to personal preference or your mood at the time. If you're looking at the cover art right now, you may have noticed that this Montreal-based trio is now a foursome. New member Gabrielle absolutely slays on lead guitar, and her playing definitely elevates Taxi Girls to another level.

The title track brings to mind the punk rock side of '90s alternative rock, and it's a total monster. I love the big riffs, cool harmony vocals, red-hot leads, and overall rocking vibes. The lead vocals and lyrics are A+ as well. How many of us knew Jamie all those years without realizing she was a freaking rock star on the mic? If this song had come out in 1993, it would have been massive! "The Lion's Share" picks up the pace with more of an anthemic catchy punk rock style. It's a total toe-tapper, and again the lyrics rule so hard. I can't listen to this song without thrusting my fist in the air and shouting along. And how amazing do those guitars sound? Both of these songs are full of spirit and attitude, and they straight-up rock. The liner notes do a great job of explaining what these songs are about, so be sure to check them out. Let's just say that Taxi Girls understand that a song can be catchy and fun to listen to yet still full of substance. If I had to pick a favorite track here, I would go with "The Lion's Share," but that's like saying I like oxygen more than food. "Rainy" is available now from Dirt Cult Records in North America and Wild Honey Records in Europe.

The Lemon Drop Gang - "Leave The World Behind"

The Lemon Drop Gang has been quickly rising up my list of favorite bands on the Rum Bar label —  and favorite bands, period! This band has it all: a talented & charismatic lead singer, a unique sound, serious musical chops, and incredible songs. Steph and Johnny O'Halloran, along with Danny Walker and Matt Rendon, really have something special going with their new single, "Leave The World Behind." It follows a couple of fantastic singles released last year. In typical Lemon Drop Gang fashion, both songs on this single manage to be both dark and totally intoxicating at the same time. That's the sweet spot (or perhaps bittersweet spot) for much of what I find appealing in this world. The title track adds some surf rock tones to the band's desert-tinged '60s garage vibes. It captures the angst and hopelessness of modern times and streamlines it all into a minute-and-a-half of perfect garage pop with a punk rock attitude. Steph turns in a great vocal, and Rendon's drumming makes it feel believable that the band just stepped out of a time machine from 1966. Johnny's guitar work, as always, is nothing short of mesmerizing. Could any song in 2024 be more relatable than this one? On the B-side, "Let the World Stay!" is punkier and delightfully bleak, propelled by Steph's urgent & inspired lead vocal. Both of these songs get the job done without any messing around — satisfying completely yet still leaving you wanting more. It goes without saying that this is one of the top singles of the year. And how amazing is that art work?

Friends of Cesar Romero - "Quick Wrath" b/w "Her Lipstick Dedication"

J Waylon is back! Actually he was back three weeks ago, and I've just been a slowpoke. Every release from his prolific and remarkably consistent solo project Friends of Cesar Romero is a must-hear, so of course that's true of new single "Quick Wrath." What I love about FoCR is that whatever sub-genre of rock 'n' roll J Waylon tackles, the quality of the songwriting is always beyond top-notch. This release is a thrilling 1-2 punch of ferocious garage rock and textbook power pop. Either of these songs could have been the A-side, but I do love the way J Waylon sequenced this single. You get a total banger to get you moving and grooving and then a perfect pop song you'll be hearing in your head all day. The lyrics, as always, are totally amazing and a highly underrated aspect of the FoCR experience. This release is Number 43 in the band's Doomed Babe Series, and it doesn't skimp on the doom. I freaking love this band!

Hotbox - self titled

In addition to releasing all that great Dogmatics music, Rum Bar Records has endeavored to rescue Jerry Lehane's other projects from the dustbin of history. The latest Lehane-related band to get the Rum Bar revival treatment is Hotbox. Hotbox was his band after Matweeds (which was his band after The Dogmatics). Also on board were Pete Mulford (Last Stand) on guitar, Frank Pagliughi on bass, and Pete Sisco on drums. Hotbox's self-titled album contains eight songs recorded in 1990 and 1991 (right around the same time that Lehane recorded the songs for his solo EP). This release is not just a treat for Dogmatics fans. It's a terrific little rock 'n' roll record that really holds up well in 2024. Certain songs are reminiscent of The Dogmatics, but overall the vibe is a little more early '90s indie/alternative. The first time I heard "Time Goes On," I was wondering how these guys got Billy Idol to sing for them. "If You're Lonely" is fantastic poppy alt-rock a la Husker Du and early Goo Goo Dolls. "Way Ahead of Me" brings to mind the power pop side of The Dogmatics, while the smash hit "Girl I Want" is quintessential Boston garage rock. "When It's Over" almost sounds like a precursor to Massachusetts punk greats The Lobby Magnets/Johnny Bravo/The Johnnies (who, of course, were huge Dogmatics fans). "You Got What I Want" is darker and harder-edged and could have been a huge alternative rock hit under more favorable conditions.

Hotbox proved to be a short-lived band due to Sisco relocating to California. Famously, the band did get to open Bill Clinton's primary rally in New Hampshire in 1992 (and get rewarded by Clinton's campaign team with two cases of beer). Let history show that Bill Clinton may have never become "the comeback" kid had it not been for Hotbox! Vagrant Records released the band's debut single, "Girl Like You," but as far as I can tell, that was Hotbox's only official release until now. This album is a reminder that Jerry Lehane is a wicked good songwriter, and I applaud Malibu Lou for realizing that the world needed to hear these songs. Don't sleep on this one!

The Dogmatics - "With A Scarlet Letter"

I was delighted to hear that The Dogmatics have a new single out on Rum Bar Records. It's no secret that this is one of my favorite bands. Impressively, the band continues to build a current-day (2019 to present) body of work that can hold its own with its classic '80s output. New single "With A Scarlet Letter" was written and sung by Peter O'Halloran. This track may come off like a goofy garage/pub rocker on the surface. But at a deeper level, it examines our nation's puritanical heritage and warns of forces in America which seek to erode the separation church and state. So, yeah, it's a fun sing-along number that's also a political anthem. This band never disappoints. Word on the street is that more singles from The Dogmatics are forthcoming, so enjoy and stay tuned!

The Peawees - One Ride

What really needs to be said about La Spezia, Italy's The Peawees? They are the epitome of class and quality in the punk/rock 'n' roll universe. Hervé Peroncini is one of the finest songwriters of his generation. Fast approaching 30 years as a band, The Peawees are aging like fine wine. One Ride, their seventh album, is out now on Wild Honey Records, Spaghetty Town Records, and FOLC Records. How many bands would kill to be able to make just one record this great? The Peawees manage to do it time and time again, and that's something we should never take for granted. The Peawees certainly didn't take it for granted. They started working on One Ride five years ago. And then, of course, the world changed. So did the lives of the band members and eventually the band's lineup. The album got put on hold. Touring got put on hold. Life got put on hold. But the band persevered. Six years after releasing their previous album Moving Target, The Peawees are back with a vengeance. One Ride again finds the band playing the perfect mix of punk rock, garage, soul, and old style rock 'n' roll. This is me listening to a Peawees album: "What a great song! There's no way the next one could be as good!" And then I keep saying the same thing over and over until the album is finished. One Ride is an absolutely bulletproof set of songs. There's not a sub-par track in the bunch, and the band (now with Dario Persi on guitar) sounds fantastic. These songs have energy, guts, timeless style, and hooks all day long.

A long time ago, The Peawees released an album called This Is Rock'n'Roll. Although the group's progression from those humble beginnings has been extraordinary, that title still captures what The Peawees are all about. From all the best parts of the past 70 years of rock 'n' roll, they create something that sounds fresh and totally their own. One Ride was a long time in the making, but it has proven more than worth the wait. Hands down, it's one of the year's best albums. If you're hunting the colored vinyl, hit the links below for further details!

Junior Varsity - Where The Groove Is

Junior Varsity, the newest band from punk/rock 'n' roll legend Mighty Joe Vincent, has debuted with one of the year's best EPs. If someone with impeccable taste like Palmyra Delran is championing this band, you know it has to be great. And how could it not be? Vincent (The Devil Dogs, Swingin' Neckbreakers, Prissteens) gets to show off his songwriting and producing chops with Junior Varsity, and he has assembled an all-star cast of veteran rock 'n' roll musicians from the New York/New Jersey area. Let's be honest: this is no JV team. All these guys have earned their varsity letters many times over. Paul Bertolino (The Sleaves, Atomic Jones) is on lead vocals. Mike Fornatale (Dot Wiggin Band, The Left Banke, Mark Lindsay, Moby Grape, etc.) and Mike Dudolevitch (The Nuclears) are on guitar. Alec Morton (Raging Slab, Monster Magnet) is on bass. Dave Lieb (Rebecca Carter Burke & Blame The Whiskey, The Vinyl Skyway) is on keyboards. Now that's a hot band!

Where The Groove Is, out now on Rum Bar Records, may surprise people who only know of Vincent from his work in garage and punk bands. With Junior Varsity, he has crafted a more sophisticated brand of rock 'n' roll with a well-refined pop sensibility. I love the big sound here —  replete with backup singers, keyboards, guitar solos, and arena-sized lead vocals. I always have a sweet spot for classic rock with great hooks, and these songs totally hit the mark. I love that you can hear many different influences at play: glam and power pop in the title track, a little Rolling Stones in "Back to Reno," some swinging garage rock in "Everything," and classic '60s pop with hints of E Street swagger in "Show Me What You're Made Of." This, my friends, is songwriting and musicianship of the highest quality. All of these four songs could be considered "the hit," and they only get better with repeated spins. Mighty Joe Vincent has brought his musical vision to life, and he couldn't have picked a better group of players to make it happen. If you like your rock 'n' roll with hooky choruses, catchy melodies, and a groove to die for, Junior Varsity is definitely the band for you.

Dany Laj and the Looks - "Meet Me On The Floor"

It has been a minute since we last heard from the always delightful Dany Laj and the Looks. Their last single came out in November of 2022, and their last studio album was released three years ago. Most distressingly for a band that lives to play in front of live humans, they have not had the chance to tour since 2019. That will change this fall as Laj and the Looks hit the road and finally get to tour in support of their terrific 2021 album Ten Easy Pieces. To celebrate, the band has cooked up the brand-new party anthem "Meet Me On The Floor." This new single sets a tone for the upcoming live dates, and its accompanying music video (the splendid creation of Courtney O'Hearn) gives you a little taste of what to expect. It's just a great rock 'n' roll song — a feelgood hit about setting aside your worries, hitting the club floor, and dancing until you drop. You know stuff like this gets me even more fired up than the Flyers' penalty kill! "Meet Me On The Floor," which draws equally from power pop, garage rock, and soul music, is all about infectious energy and good vibes. It could not be any catchier. How nuts are the crowds gonna go for this song on tour?! Joining Laj and his partner Jeanette Dowling on this release are David Laplante on guitar and Alex Pauzé on drums. Stacey Case (Tijuana Bibles, Weirdies) guest stars on tambourine. There can never be too much tambourine in rock 'n' roll! I've missed Dany Laj and the Looks, and their return is truly triumphant. They'll be touring all across Canada in late September and early October and then hitting the USA for some dates in the Midwest and New York — then returning to Canada with Paul Collins' Beat! Click here for further tour info!

The Wynotts - Way Back Now

On the very first day of this year, I reported on the reformation of The Wynotts — a Boston-based band that originally formed in 2007 and broke up in 2009. The group disbanded with a lot of recorded material in the can, and those tracks now see the light of day a decade and a half after they were recorded. A few songs were released digitally late last year, but now the full album Way Back Now is available on compact disc with distribution from the mighty Rum Bar Records. There's an old joke about how most bands in Boston qualify as "super-groups." But it's hard to not call The Wynotts a super-group! Bob Cenci (Jerry's Kids, Hellcats From Outer Space), Michele Kish (The Killer Abs), Peter DeVincent (Underball), and Ivahna Rock (The Downhauls, Petty Morals) are all mainstays of the Boston-area garage/punk scene. Cenci and Kish are the primary songwriters, but all four band members contribute material. Each songwriter has their own style, yet it all comes together in a cohesive and complementary way. It ought to be illegal to have this much talent in one band! Simply put, The Wynotts sound like a classic Boston punk rock band. They write great pop songs and deliver them in a hard-driving three-chord rock 'n' roll style. If you dig old school powerpop/punk, this is definitely the album for you. The songs are fantastic all the way through, and even after 11 tracks, I'm left wanting more. I'm amazed that these songs went unreleased for 15–16 years, but the I suppose the good thing about that is that the band members had plenty of time to realize they had an album that the world really needed to hear. And heck, if this album had come out in 2009,  I would have missed it since I was not writing about music at the time! Ultimately, this is a great album in any year and hands down one of the best long players of 2024 so far. The Wynotts working with Malibu Lou is truly a match made in heaven!

Friends of Cesar Romero - Last Summer A Year From Now

You know I'm always pumped for new music from Friends of Cesar Romero. J. Waylon is one of the finest songwriters in the present-day garage/pop/rock 'n' roll universe, and the way he manages to be a prolific artist yet never turn out a sub-par release is beyond impressive. FoCR's new EP Last Summer A Year From Now (How's that for an amazing title?) is installment number 42 in the Doomed Babe Series. And yet as deep as we are into this series, none of these installments have felt unnecessary or redundant. Any time I hear the latest installment, I'm already looking forward to the next one. Part of that is the timelessness of the subject matter. Who can't relate to themes of heartbreak and obsession and doomed romance? Another part of it is how well J. Waylon writes about this sort of stuff. He has lived these songs, and he's gifted at putting all that doom into eloquent words. This new EP finds him mixing up musical styles in a most satisfying way. "Kinetic Threat" is a crackling opener that brings to mind the early 2000s heyday of modern garage rock. "Purple Hearts Hardly Bruise" is ultra-energetic poppy punk and quite the toe-tapper. The title track is scruffy power pop par excellence. "The Long Drive To You" takes it back to the garage vein and begs to be blasted loudly. Closing it out, "Simple Little Love Song" is textbook power pop. There's something on this EP for everyone, and there's nothing on this EP that will disappoint longtime fans. And if you're not a longtime fan, this would be a perfectly good entry place into Friends of Cesar Romero fandom. Grab a free download while you can, and be sure to dig into that treasure trove of a back catalog if you like what you hear!

The Bacarrudas - Pool Party

duly warned you last month, so I hope you have prepared yourself for the debut album from The Bacarrudas. Pool Party is out today on Mom's Basement Records, and now the rest of your day is shot. You're not getting any more work done. No obligations will be met. All adulting has been postponed. Be ready to spend the next few hours dancing around the kitchen, wailing away on the air guitar, and singing along so loudly that your cat gives you the side-eye. The Bacarrudas have come storming out of the North Philly suburbs with 13 tracks of infectious, high energy, organ-driven frat rock goodness suitable for parties by the pool or anywhere else. Of course the whole vibe of this album is undeniable (this band must be insane live!), but it's the quality of the songs that really separates The Bacarrudas from your ordinary garage rock band. When it comes to crafting a catchy, rockin' tune, Adam Rabuck is undeniably an all-time great. Even outside the realm of pop-punk, he knows how to write a hit. If the likes of "You Can Have My Love If You Want It, OK?", "Elizabeth Anne," "Trouble," and "Rave It Up" aren't on your summertime playlist, you might as well not even have a summertime playlist! In 2024, The Bacarrudas have managed to produce what sounds like the best garage/R & B album of 1965, and who could deny that this is exactly what the world needs right now?

The Amplifier Heads - Songs from They Came To Rock

Songs from They Came To Rock
, the fifth album by The Amplifier Heads, is the most essential soundtrack album to be released in a good while. They Came To Rock, Norty Cohen's immersive rock opera about an alien invasion of the most unexpected kind, debuted in Nashville in 2021. Sal Baglio, who wrote many of the songs which appear in the theatrical production, recently got together with a whole bunch of his talented friends and made a proper rock and roll album out of They Came To Rock. The concept for the story is the stuff of genius: in 1947, the birth of rock and roll brought aliens to our planet in search of these wondrous sounds they were picking up on their radios.

It makes complete sense if you think about it. Alien civilizations with the advanced technology and brain power required to defy what we believe to be the laws of physics would not likely have been impressed by our centuries of human achievements — but then they would have heard rock and roll, and that would have been a mind-blower. What extraterrestrial society wouldn't be seduced by this miraculous form of music  — which immediately ignites the soul of any sentient being and provokes a frenzy of dancing and singing and uninhibited joy? Of course the aliens would have wanted in on the action! They would have marveled at how these tiny-brained Earthlings could have created something so sublime. Combining alleged true events with pure fantasy, this collection of songs tells the story of what happened when those little green men from galaxies far away came here with one single motive: to rock! The album mixes in various audio "transmissions" to give context to the songs, and I can't help thinking that I would have totally freaked if I'd heard something like this when I was six years old and space-crazed. It's like War of the Worlds meets "Let There Be Rock," and I am here for it!

In style and sprit, the songs from They Came To Rock resemble what extraterrestrials actually would have heard if they'd be tuned into Planet Earth's airwaves in the mid–20th century. You'll hear everything from rhythm & blues to country to first generation rock and roll to '60s beat and garage rock to out-of-this-world '70s glam. Part of Baglio's brilliance was in picking the right vocalist for each song. Any aliens hearing Barrence Whitfield belt out the title track will immediately be scheduling return trips to experience the thrill of Earthling rock and roll. The legendary Allen Estes gives "They Heard My Radio" classic country vibes. "Dead Star" sounds like a song that Dan Kopko was literally born to sing. "That Girl Betty" succeeds in recreating the Phil Spector wall of sound for a variety of reasons, but mostly because of the extraordinary vocal talents of Jen D'Angora and Samantha Goddess. I'm such a fan of Jen D'Angora as a songwriter and musician that I sometimes don't fully appreciate what a great singer she is. Her lead vocal on the old school rocker "Something Went Down" is something special. Baglio is no slouch on vocals either, breathing extraterrestrial cool into "Bienvenue" and perfectly mimicking Elvis Presley on "The Moon Rocks." "Space Cadette" brings to mind dancing aliens on spaceships jetting across the galaxy.

For They Came To Rock to succeed, the songs were going to have to be convincing. The premise doesn't work if you don't hear these tunes and believe that aliens would hear this stuff and totally lose their minds. Thankfully —  as this Amplifier Heads' soundtrack album demonstrates — these songs totally deliver. Songs from They Came To Rock can stand alone as a great spacey garage rock album and companion piece to The Amplifier Heads' third album SaturnalienS. On another level, you might find yourself getting lost in the story and eagerly awaiting a revival of the theatrical production. Get the CD now from  Rum Bar Records, your intergalactic home of the hits!

Kate Clover - The Apocalypse Dream

You've probably been hearing a lot about Kate Clover's new album The Apocalypse Dream. Believe what you're hearing: this thing is an absolute treat for anyone who loves first wave punk rock, powerful pop, modern garage rock, or all of the above! If you enjoyed Clover's last LP Bleed Your Heart Out, you can count on The Apocalypse Dream being everything that album was and much more. Any reader of this blog will find Clover's musical approach still hitting their sweet spot, but with this release her songwriting rises to another level. It's quite a task to channel classic punk & new wave in a way that feels genuinely current in 2024, but Clover manages to do exactly that. She oozes cool without even trying (which is really the only way to ooze cool!), and her songs offer just as much in lyrical substance as they do in intoxicating hooks. Of course the pre-album singles have been amazing, but there are plenty more gems on the record — such as the pandemic-inspired title track, the perfect punk-pop tune "You'll Be the Death of Me," and the anthemic new wave throwback "L.A. Prayer." No doubt this album will have you flipping out if grew up on Blondie and the Buzzcocks. But your Gen Z relations are gonna love it too!

Friends of Cesar Romero - Temporary Anne

Temporary Anne is already the 7th release this year from J. Waylon's prolific and ever-dependable Friends of Cesar Romero. It's almost shocking that J. Waylon can deliver such a remarkable quantity of music yet never, ever skimp on the quality. Part of what makes FOCR so appealing is that a new release is never predictable. You know you're getting loud guitars and top-tier hooks, but you can never be sure of exactly what to expect. J. Waylon moves effortlessly between banging garage rock, textbook power pop, catchy old school punk, and timeless guitar pop — sometimes all within a single release! Temporary Anne is #39 in his Doomed Babe Series, and I can only hope that there are many more installments to come. The title track is fantastic power pop and blessed with so many FOCR signatures: ringing guitars, a killer chorus, and lyrics that will break your heart. "Who's Wondering Now" kicks up the pace with some stellar poppy punk rock. "Running on the Spot" is mostly faithful to The Jam's classic original, but J. Waylon still manages to give a distinct FOCR feel. All in all, this is another fantastic release from a band that never disappoints. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If you're a regular reader of this blog and not yet into Friends of Cesar Romero, that situation needs to be rectified ASAP!

Dogmatics - "I Can't Get Over You"

Well here's a Rocktober surprise for you! The mighty Dogmatics have released a single called "I Can't Get Over You" — their first new music in a year-and-a-half! This Rum Bar Records release will pump us all up for more music from Dogmatics in 2024! What I admire about Dogmatics is that they've built a body of work in recent years (2019's She's the One EP and last year's Drop That Needle EP) that stands on its own merits. Even if you'd never heard the group's classic releases, you'd still consider them one of the best rock 'n' roll bands going just based on what they've put out there since reuniting.  "I Can't Get Over You" is nothing more and nothing less than a straight-ahead rock 'n' roll tune in a timeless style. It's got a great hook, and it will get your toes tapping in no time flat. This could almost pass for some lost gem from Buddy Holly or Bobby Fuller, and that's about the highest compliment I could pay a song. Jerry Lehane sure knows how to write a three-chord rock 'n' roll tune! They say you can't get anything for a dollar anymore, but "I Can't Get Over You" is evidence to the contrary. You're gonna play the heck out of this single!

The New Frustrations - Lifetime

It's hard for me to believe that Plymouth, Massachusetts' The New Frustrations have been a band for 17 years. But the math sure works out! Brian, Rick, and Tom have been through a lot, but they've kept The New Frustrations going through three iterations of the band. Through it all, they've remained one of the most dependable power pop groups out there and one of my favorite bands, period. To say these guys are underrated would be the understatement of the year. The band has had to reinvent itself a little with each new lineup, but fundamentally you know what you're getting with The New Frustrations: well-written, hook-laden pop songs with lots of punch. The band's new EP Lifetime is only its third. If we've learned anything about New Frustrations EPs, it's that they only happen every 7-9 years and always leave us wanting more. Lifetime was produced by the great Dave Minehan, and you can definitely hear his influence on this release. Clearly this was a case where the band and the producer were on the same wavelength, and what results is an absolutely tremendous EP.

As a lean power trio, Brian, Rick, and Tom have developed a sound of their own. Lifetime mostly leaves behind the '70s punk influences of the band's early releases. The vibe I'm getting from these songs is '80s college radio meets classic Boston power pop. "Won't Let U Down" is rockin' power pop straight out of the textbook. The title track and 'I Can't Be" sound like the best songs Grant Hart and Bob Mould never wrote. "Words You Never Said" recalls the power pop side of The Replacements. "Diane (Happy Hunting)" is a moving character sketch and one of the catchiest pop songs you could ever hope to hear. The surprise track is "Laura," which finds The New Frustrations going all-in on bar band rock 'n' roll. It's a song you never would have anticipated based on the band's previous releases, yet it's great fun and not at all out of step with the timeless garage rock that has reigned supreme in New England for decades. I've been spinning this EP in the car for weeks, and I just can't get enough of these songs. Luckily I've been spared the impossible choice of deciding which songs to embed below. The EP doesn't come out until next weekend, and "Lifetime" is the only track currently available. But trust me: if you like "Lifetime," you'll love the whole EP.  It will be available Saturday on Bandcamp and Spotify!
