Past Polymer Clay Tutorials

With school coming to an end, I've been super busy. I'm happy to say that I won't be going to school for spring/summer. I need a break and am going to take this time to continue doing tutorials.

To get me started, I'm leaving links to some tutorials I did for Sculpey. '

Clay is on Sale at Joanns..

In case you don't know, all Sculpey clay is on sale at Joann's. That includes premo and studio clay.

But, you better move fast because the sale ends on Saturday. I went to a Joann's today and the lady in charge of that department hadn't put the sign out (it's been on sale for a couple weeks), so there was a lot to choose from.

I loaded up on a lot of clay, enough to last for awhile (of course, there's always the chance I'll sell a lot of clay babies and will run out).

I came home from the store and dumped all the clay on my table. Tomorrow I'm going to sort it out. The last few days I've been busy and haven't done much in the way of clay. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, I just can not get to it.

Giveaway winners

I've only heard from a few of the winners of the clay baby giveaway. If you won, please send me your address. Tomorrow I'll contact those people. Then I will ship out the clay babies to the winners. Remember, if you haven't sent your address to me, put "I won a clay baby" in the subject line.

Antiqued Clay and Michael's Sale

To give my clay creations a primitive or folk art look, I like to antique finished pieces.

I use Studio by Sculpey Antiquing medium, Chocolate brown, some old soft rags and a dry brush.

(I used to mix brown acrylic paint with hand lotion and it worked just as well...I just happened to receive the Studio by Sculpey medium, so I'm using it now. In a pinch though, remember the paint and hand lotion idea)..

Here's how to antique your clay.

Cover your clay piece with the antique medium. I cover mine completely.

Get the brown into every crevice.

After the piece is completely covered, begin to wipe it off as quickly as possible. If the phone rings, ignore it, as you don't want this medium to dry. The point is to wipe it on, wipe it off.

I use soft paper towels or old white tee shirts.

Doesn't the
antiqued girl look
better than the plain girl?

I added a little quilt, eyes and a button and she's finished!

Polymer Clay on Sale

If you've always wanted to try Polymer clay, now is the time. It's on sale at Michaels Crafts. Premo, sculpey and I believe, fimo are all on sale for $1.00 a package. Premo normally runs around $2.59 or more, so this is the time to stock up. I used to go to a wholesaler and buy $200.00 worth at a time, but in the last few years Michaels has been running these incredible sales. Sometimes the clay is $.99, sometimes, $.89. I personally will load up on as much as I can afford right now.

In 1982, I was at a craft show and saw someone who made things from white polymer clay. I was very interested in it and she was wonderful to tell me the name of it. I then did some research, got a sales tax number and sent away for a big box of clay. I think I got 8 each of 12 colors. I don't think I moved away from the table for days (just enough to take care of the family) . Later on, in 1987, I opened a small shop and sold crafts and packages of clay. My customers used to wait for the UPS man to deliver it. Then they would wipe out the order in minutes. The availability of polymer clay sure has come a long way since then.

While you are buying some for yourself, I suggest getting some for the kids in your family. They can make Halloween and Christmas ornaments, their own designer beads, clay tiles to use in mosaics, book markers, jewelry and more. They can even make game pieces (every house in
America probably has a game with pieces missing). (You would think that I'm a spokeswoman for the clay industry....I'm not, I just love it so much!)

Happy Claying!

Step by step picture tutorial

Here's a quick and easy way to make a turkey. You can adjust the size by adding more quantities of clay. I've included a penny in the pictures to give you an idea of size.

First you roll a ball of brown clay about the size of a walnut...

Then roll smaller ball of yellow, one of red, one of orange and one of brown...

Roll the smaller balls into snakes....

Then, twist all the colors together,,kind of like a candy cane...

Smooth the candy cane and break into 7 equal pieces (we will call these feathers)

Roll out each feather smoothly in your hand and bring to a point. Flatten slightly. Place one on top, one on each side, then fill in the back with the remaining feathers. Put slight pressure to attach to back.

Roll out a tube about 1/2 inch long, this is the neck and head. Attach to middle front of body.
Add a yellow beak, red wattle...
Back in oven for 20 minutes at 265 degrees..let cool.

You can use this as a decoration on your table, or make several and use for each person's place setting.
