Kerry's Assessment of the Global Climate Change Challenge

Senator John Kerry (D, MA), "the haughty, French-looking Massachusetts Democrat who by the way served in Vietnam", delivered this assessment of the seriousness of "climate change"

I believe that the situation we face, Mr. President, is as dangerous as any of the sort of real crises that we talk about
As dangerous as a real crisis? That sounds to me like quite an admission.

This Month's Proof of Global Warming

If global warming is real, how can there be cold records being broken all over the world? There's significant snow in Rome for the first time in three years. They even had to close the Coliseum for safety reasons. Matter of fact, it turns out it's the first heavy snow in 26 years! A storm that has trapped thousands and killed hundreds.

And that's not counting the Seattle snow — two feet of snow according to some accounts.

It looks like an endless winter! And it definitely must be global warming.

Today's Proof of Global Warming

If global warming is real, how can they still be skiing in the West? And it looks like they'll be able to ski there, this year, all year round.

Who would have expected a 365 day ski season for the year at Lake Tahoe? It's an endless winter!

And it definitely must be global warming.

Global Warming?

The East Coast got hit with “two feet of global warming” last week. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is still fielding questions about his cityˆs somewhat unsuccessful response to the snowfall. Other parts of the country have been having unusually severe winters this year, too — enough to produce a cartoon.

Snow in the desert. Snow on cactus. It’s not just an idea any more. Even the Phoenix area got snow last week.

That's an unusual picture from the Sonoran Desert. After all, the Sonoran Desert isn“t England.

APS Fellow Resigns, Cites Global Warming

Hal Lewis, a Professor Emeritus of physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) for many years, has had enough. He can no longer put up with the corruption of the Society's membership and processes, and has resigned from the Society by means of a letter of resignation sent to its president. And to what does he attribute the corruption that has driven him out?

It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist.
He goes on to cite chapter and verse of the Society's action and inaction with regard to global warming, climate change, and whatever other term is to be applied to this subject area.

Naturally, the U.S. press wouldn't give this much (or any) coverage — Professor Lewis attacks an important shibboleth of theirs. For press coverage, one must go to the Telegraph in the rather more open British press. In this country, coverage is left to the blogs, particularly including Gateway Pundit and Watts Up With That. And that, too, helps prove Professor Lewis' point.

These People Are Not Scientists

I have never known a scientist to either throw away or destroy raw data. But these people did — they threw away the data on which their claims of man-made global warming are based.

To me, that means they may be politicians, but they are not scientists. And, as such, they do not belong in a scientific discussion.

UPDATE: More confirmation of what I said here -- Jonah Goldberg quotes a reader:

If I were caught bending the data to fit the model as the CRU was doing, I'm quite confident that I'd be unemployed and quite possibly facing time as a guest of the Feds.

The Earth Is Cooling

The global warming crowd must be going nuts! The things man is doing that are supposedly responsible for "global warming" are increasing, but global temperatures are going down. That strongly suggests man isn't actually responsible. That's why "650 of the world's top climatologists stood up and said man-made global warming is a media generated myth without basis."

There are lots of examples of this trend running around. American Digest provides one, from St. Augustine, Florida, earlier this month.

A broader, less anecdotal, view comes from NOAA.

The bottom line: Global temperatures have been dropping for a decade — right in line with solar activity — and are now back where they were when the news magazines were warning of the threat of a new ice age.

Environmental Extremists

NASA's Dr James Hansen called today for the thought police to arrest and punish those CEOs of energy corporations that don't hew to his global warming orthodoxy. He said the heads of fossil fuel companies who "spread disinformation" (i.e., disagree with him) about global warming should be "tried for high crimes against humanity and nature."

This evening I saw a spokesman for the National Resources Defense Council being interviewed about Hansen's testimony and statements. She did say three things that were true:

  • Dr Hansen testified before Congress today.
  • He has been in the government for more than 20 years.
  • He was the first "major scientist" to warn of the dangers of global warming and assert the need for a massive and immediate response to save the earth.
Everything else she said in the prepared speeches she used, as answers to the questions she was asked, was false. And most of it was slanderous, like her explicit claim that all the scientists and researchers who don't accept Hansen's orthodoxy are bought and paid for by the oil companies.

No wonder she had no response to the question of why we should listen to politicians (several were named) who are beholden to environmental extremists.

My only question is whether these people are being deliberately dishonest — that is, are they lying only to us or are they lying to themselves as well?

Greenland

There's a reason the Vikings called it Greenland.

A New Island

A new island has appeared off the coast of Greenland, and it's being touted as a proof and consequence of global warming. It had been thought to be the end of a peninsula, but it turned out to be an island when the ice over it melted.

Something tells me this isn't the first time this island has appeared. After all, the Vikings called the place Greenland for a reason, and it wasn't because it was all covered with ice.

That was during the Medieval Warm Period. Then the Little Ice Age came, and the Viking settlements simply disappeared.

Riehl World View notes:

So this island has most likely come and gone before, hundreds of years before man invented electricity or the internal combustion engine, but, well, this time it's different, it's proof positive that man is the cause of Global Warming?
Somehow that just doesn't make sense.

Incidentally, I remember that Al Gore and his global warming activists are saying the global warming ice melt will cause the sea level to rise twenty feet or more. But I also recall that Venice was thriving — and not flooded — during that Medieval Warm Period.
