Limestone, Wildflowers, and Big Sky: A Wyoming Trail Run

I arrived in Wyoming last Sunday, and I'll be here for two months working with one of my advisors. I haven't had too much time to explore yet, but today (Monday) I went on a beautiful trail run*. Wyoming really is beautiful. I enjoy all the quiet, wide-open spaces. Here are a few pictures from today's trail run:

Along the trail, I found some interesting limestone (not sure which unit; still have to learn the local geology):

There were also some pretty flowers:

Finally, I made it to the top of the trail:

Where there was a beautiful valley view:

And then I ran all the way back down again as the sun began to set... what a beautiful run!

*Okay, so really a run/walk with frequent picture stops, since I'm a tad out of shape and also not yet fully accustomed to running at 7,000+ ft.

  1. Lovely shots of 'Big Sky' country. Is there a significant ash layer in the strata there? I notice "clastic/volcanic" listed in the details of many of the formations in the county, but that would seem to be rock, not ash.

  2. Thanks, LceeL!

I'm still learning the stratigraphy-- my housemate is a geologist, so I hope to be up to speed soon!

  3. The pictures are magnificently taken. Love the sky actually. On the other hand, I just started out my garden construction and my husband suggested that we should use Limestone as it is the
best stone to use. Though granite and any local stone will probably suffice. He also told me that once the garden has been set up, we are going to make pockets among the rocks and stones and fill with good composted soil in which to place the plants. Hmmm... sounds a good plan to me. He's a genius.
