In Middle School
by
Gregory K.
History's a mystery.
Science is a curse.
My English grade could use some aid -
My math one's even worse.
My Spanish skill is nearly nil.
PE's like a punch.
The only class I think I'll pass
In middle school is lunch!
(©2017 Greg Pincus)
The above poem kicks off The Homework Strike (my new novel out this week from Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic. Makes a great gift. Find a great local store or buy online or both!). As in the 14 Fibs, main character Gregory K. writes poems, and one starts each chapter. There might be others lurking in the 272 pages o' Strike, too, but you'll only know if you read it. I think you should, though I am biased. Also, while the poem and book aren't autobiographical, for the record, I passed lunch every year of school.
It's time for the first Poetry Friday roundup of the year, hosted over at TeacherDance. There are tons of great poetry links there to kick off your new year, so you really oughta check it out.

A Summary and a Review of My Recent School Vacation - a school poem/a vacation poem
A Summary and a Review of My Recent School Vacation

Flu.
Boo.
It's Poetry Friday yet again here in the blogosphere, so head on over to Laura Purdie Salas's Writing the World for Kids and check out this week's roundup of poetry goodies.
(P.S. Honestly, Mom, that's not really what happened to me, I'm grateful to say. It's just a poem!)

Corrections - a school poem
Corrections
by
Greg Pincus
I wish I could correct my work -
It makes my poor brain ache.
See, I used my pink eraser...
And that was my mistake!
One of the things I love about Poetry Friday (and hey... you can see a roundup of today's posts over at Mainely Write) is that from time to time, you can throw things out there and find out if they make sense to anyone but yourself. This is one of those times for me :-)

The Shared Lament of Students and Teachers on the Passing of Time - a back to school poem
The Shared Lament of Students and Teachers on the Passing of Time
by

It's the end of summer.
Bummer.
(For those of you for whom this sentiment and/or the season do not apply, my apologies.)
It's Poetry Friday, even as the summer dwindles away, and you can find this week's roundup of posts over at My Juicy Little Universe (where Heidi, too, has a poetic commentary about summer and school).

Notes on Spirit Week at My School (Part 1) - a school poem/a spirit week poem
Notes on Spirit Week at My School (Part 1)
by
Greg Pincus
Pajama Day's rough
If you sleep in the buff!
(Hat tip to Evan Pincus for the idea/help on this poem.)
Growing up, I was never a fan of Spirit Week or Spirit Days or any such, particularly not Pajama Day. Interestingly, of course, now I wish I could just wear a comfy robe all day when I go out and about....
To up your spirits... it's Poetry Friday (already back East as I post this, in fact)! You can check out this week's roundup of poetry awesomeness at the always fantabulous Miss Rumphius Effect. It's always good stuff, I say to you.

Book Review: Anti-Gravity - a book review poem/a science poem
Book Review: Anti-Gravity
by
Greg Pincus
This book on anti-gravity will never make you frown.
In fact, the only problem is you just can't put it down.
What's that you say? I'm not allowed a groaner (with science that is not 100% perfect, I suppose)? Of course I am! It might be the only one that's part of this week's Poetry Friday roundup (hosted over at Teach Mentor Texts), but you'll only know if you go check it out.

Summer Reading - a reading poem/a school poem
Summer Reading
by
Greg Pincus
I read two dozen comic books. Three graphic novels, too.
I understood the signs so wasn't eaten at the zoo!
I read aloud each billboard as we drove on our vacation.
The packages our food comes in? I read their information.
I figured out which films to watch by reading their descriptions.
I read a lot of magazines (and got a few subscriptions).
I learned the rules of four new games by reading the instructions.
I devoured five new joke books (though I skipped the introductions).
I read the list of all the things I can't do at the pool.
I even read the packet labeled "Welcome Back to School."
I think I am a reader, though in class I get "those" looks...
'Cuz I didn't crack a cover of my summer reading books!
Ah, yes... summer reading. You know... let's not talk about that - let's talk instead about the fact that the Poetry Friday roundup is up over at Author Amok today! The roundup is purely happy stuff (as is, I've always believed, the very name Author Amok), so head on over and get your fill o' poetry goodies.

To My 2nd Period English Teacher - a dog poem/a vendetta poem
To My 2nd Period English Teacher
by
Greg Pincus
My dog has it in for me badly.
I swear he’s the worst cur on earth.
I wish I could get away from the vendetta
He’s had against me since my birth.
Instead, he finds new ways to hound me.
My days are spent shaking with fear!
And he is why actually, truly and factually,
None of my homework is here.
This was a poem written for this year's March Madness Poetry shebang... though it did not help me advance to the next round, as you can see. My task was to write a poem using the word vendetta, by the way. I believe it was the first time I'd done so, and I was pleased enough with the result to share it here.

Sequester the Tester - a school poem/a play poem
Sequester the Tester
by
Greg Pincus
We’re locked in our classroom all day for a test
Answering questions for hours with no rest.
You want us to learn? Well, this isn’t the way.
Sequester the tester and just let us play!
I wrote this poem almost a year ago during last year's March Madness (the fantastic event masterminded by Ed DeCaria). During the Madness, some poor poet had to write a poem in 36 hours using the word "sequester"... and I decided it was such a great word, I'd give it a try, too, just cuz.
Flash forward to a year later, and "sequester" is suddenly in the news (AND it's standardized testing time all over the place, too). So, I've decided to dust off this little ditty. (And, yes... I'm doing the Madness again! More on that soooooon.)
And hey... it's Poetry Friday, so you can see what else is going on around the Kidlitosphere by heading over to the weekly roundup at Heidi's Juicy Little Universe.

Punxatawney Phil Sees His Shadow - a Groundhog Day poem
Punxatawney Phil Sees His Shadow
by
Greg Pincus
You say “Boo! More snow and gloom.”
But me? I think it’s cool -
More winter means that there’s more chance
Of a snow day off from school!
And a Happy Groundhog Day to you all, whether you're for or against the predicted six more weeks o' winter.

Why I Didn't Turn In My Homework - a school poem/an excuse poem
Why I Didn’t Turn In My Homework
by
Greg Pincus
I left it at home.
It made me weep.
I did other work.
I fell asleep.
I must’ve lost it.
I did it last week!
What? There was homework?
To me it was Greek.
My printer was dead.
I don’t understand what it’s supposed to teach me and that wasn’t explained and I don’t learn anything when you give me a number grade or a check mark with no explanation of how to get better so the homework is a waste of my time and I didn’t do it because I hate it.
It’s not due tomorrow?
My doggie ate it.
Today's poem was inspired by the poetry prompt over at The Miss Rumphius Effect. It might've also been inspired by some real-life observation, too, and it's quite clearly from a student POV!

It's June (And I Am Still In School) - an end of the school year poem
It’s June (And I’m Still In School)
by
Greg Pincus
I’ll tell you something most uncool –
It’s June… and I am still in school.
I’ve got some friends whose year is done.
They’re sleeping in. They’re having fun.
Next week they’ll only play and rest
While I will take an English test.
And when they run and laugh and swim...
Guess what? I’m stuck in math and gym.
It isn’t right. It isn’t fair.
I need the late spring’s fresh, warm air.
It’s not that I hate school at all.
I’ll gladly come back in the fall.
And sure, vacation’s coming soon,
But I’m in school. And. It. Is. June!
It's Poetry Friday, and you can see the roundup of blogosphere poetic doings over at The Writer's Armchair. Good times and good reading, indeed.

Foods That Scare - a scary food poem, a lunch poem
This poem first appeared here at Jama Rattigan's Alphabet Soup, where it looks fabulous! The same post has a recipe of my grandmother's and some quite entertaining comments. You should go see it. I repost the poem here just cuz I can.
Foods That Scare
by
Gregory K.
Beware of foods with names like "hash."
You can't know what's put in it.
And still don't trust a succotash
If you see the cook begin it.
Have fear of soups if they contain
Mysterious cooked greens.
Also have most great disdain
Of salads called "Five Beans."
A casserole can hide so much.
It's quite a frightening thing.
If there's one food you should not touch,
It's Chicken ala King.
Everybody knows that gruel
Is not a food to munch.
All this is why, when you're in school,
Be sure to bring your lunch.
This week's Poetry Friday roundup is also over at Jama's Alphabet Soup. My word, her posts are so scrumptious it's almost cruel. Go check it out!

Book Report on the Thesaurus - a homework poem/a thesaurus poem
Book Report on the Thesaurus
by
Gregory K.
Words? There were lots, very many, a ton.
Plot? There was zero, zilch, zip, nada, none.
I found it enjoyable, likable, fun...
But was glad when it finished, completed, was done.
I'd call this poem a companion (or partner or kissing cousin or... or... or) to my poem Book Report on the Dictionary. What can I say? Reference books inspire me....
This week's Poetry Friday roundup is over at Random Noodling. Head on over and see what else is going on poetically today (including Fibonacci poems by some talented kindergarteners).

A Poetry Re-issue: Book Report on the Dictionary
BOOK REPORT ON THE DICTIONARY
by
Gregory K.
I found the plot missing,
The dialog weak.
I kept waiting and waiting for someone to speak.
The characters bored me.
In fact, there weren’t any!
The jokes were not funny, and there weren’t too many.
The book started slowly.
The middle lacked energy.
And what type of ending is “zymotic, zymurgy”?
The authors have talent
But need to refine it...
'Cause if there's a point here, they failed to define it.
Since I promised a little retrospective betwixt my 1,000th post and upcoming blogoversary, what better poem to reprint than the only one that ever led to angry, angry mail here at GottaBook? Yes, you see, the edition of the dictionary my correspondent had did NOT have those two words at the end, and, while they understood I had taken poetic license with the concept, it was totally pointless for me to make up fake words when I could use real ones. Oh, to have sent them this link! But I didn't :-)
The Poetry Friday roundup is over at my friend Lee Wind's I'm Here, I'm Queer. What the Hell Do I Read? (a fantastic blog and resource, by the way). Go off and find yourself a poetry post to love, I tell ya!

A Poetry Re-issue: The First Day of School - a first day of school poem
(This poem originally ran here at GottaBook in September of 2006 and again last year, I believe. But it is that time of year again!)
THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
by
Gregory K.
I don’t know the teacher.
I sure hope she’s nice.
But what if she’s mean with a heart cold as ice???
What about bullies?
There might be a bunch.
And what a disaster if I mess up lunch!
I don’t like that playground:
The slide hits the sky!
And now here at drop-off, I can’t say “goodbye.”
My stomach is queasy.
My stress can’t be greater...
But then a voice calms me,
“Bye, Dad! See ya later!”
Good luck to all parents (yeah, and kids, too) as the first day of school comes 'round once more. And happy Poetry Friday to all! Why not check out the roundup of this week's posts over at The Boy Reader?
Oh, yeah - you can change "Dad" to "Mom" in that last line, as necessary!

Allergic to Homework -- a homework poem/a poem about allergies
ALLERGIC TO HOMEWORK
by
Gregory K.
I said “I’m allergic to homework.
It makes me cough and wheeze.
You send me home with mounds to do,
And I just snuff and sneeze.”
My teachers would never believe me.
“Allergic? We think not.
Maybe see a doc,” they’d laugh,
“And you can get a shot.”
Today my teachers aren’t laughing,
And I don’t mean to gloat,
But they can’t give me homework now:
I’ve got a doctor’s note!
I'm posting an original poem each day in April in celebration of National Poetry Month. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and I post all year round, because poetry is NOT just for April!) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".

Hello, Summer! -- a last day of school poem/a summer vacation poem
'Tis the end of the school year in many parts, and I thought I'd celebrate this poetry Friday by tossing up a summer vacation/last day of school poem. And why not, I ask? Ya, I couldn't come up with a reason either.... Check out the Poetry Friday roundup over at adventures in daily living!
Hello, Summer! -- (A Last Day of School Poem)
by
Gregory K.
Goodbye, classroom!
Goodbye, Teach!
You can find me at the beach...
Or in the park or at the pool
Or any place that isn’t school.
Goodbye, quizzes!
Bye, reports!
Hello days packed full of sports
And days when I’m just lazybones
While eating melty ice cream cones.
Goodbye, homework --
Lunchroom, too.
There’s so, so much I wanna do.
I know the school year flew on past…
But please, please summer -- last and last.

Book Report on The Dictionary - a homework poem/a dictionary poem/a book report poem
(I'm posting an original poem-a-day through April in celebration of National Poetry Month. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and there are lots of others, because poetry is NOT just for April) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".)

Diary of a Bad Week -- a school poem/a bad week at school poem/a diary poem
Oooh, a Poetry Friday the 13th, and me without a triskaidekaphobia poem (but check the links Liz has round up today to see if others have one). Bad Greg. Bad. So in keeping with the "bad" theme...
DIARY OF A BAD WEEK
by
Gregory K.
Monday: Failed to pay attention...
After school I had detention.
Tuesday: Said things I lamented...
Apologized but was detented.
Wednesday: Won school stairway race!
After school, the same old place.
Thursday: Pulled a classic trick...
Faked an illness; stayed home sick.
Friday: Food fight! Man, what fun!
From the school watched setting sun.
Weekend: This just makes me cry...
I’ve been grounded. Don’t know why.
