Brunch and Burger at Sunny Spot (Venice, CA)

Sunny Spot is the perfect brunch spot. Colorful space with an outdoor dining area, great cocktails by Brian Butler (with recently added bottomless mimosa and Bloody Mary), and delicious comfort Caribbean food from Roy Choi.

A staple dish is the Muh-F*K*N Mofongo and eggs (2 fried eggs, ripe plantains, applewood bacon, fennel, garlic, fresh herbs, ginger oil - $11)

Rather than the Hangover Plate, I think this one would be a better cure for that hangover! The rich and bold flavors would soothe that headache right away.

There's a sweet deal for a boozy brunch: Bottomless mimosa, Bloody Mary, cava, or rum punch (you can mix and match any of them) for $10 with purchase of a main course. If you prefer a craft cocktail instead they are $11 each. I highly recommend Permanent Vacation (Peychaud's, tequila, hibiscus, lemon, carpano, ginger beer)

Other than the egg and bacon brunch dishes, you can also get a very satisfying Cuban Torta (pork terrine, prosciutto, provoline, pickled jalapeno, mustard - $13)

Two Fisted Cheeseburger (brioche bun, tomato jam, red onion, arugula, cheddar, herb mayo - $13, add fried egg for $1)

This was an amazing burger, I'm not kidding. Generous meaty, juicy patty where the quality of the meat comes through in the flavor, great bread, and I especially like that tomato jam.

You can take your vegetarian friends here, too, and they will be pleased with the Roasted Veggie Omelette (fingerling potatoes, brussels sprouts, cipollini onions, goat cheese - $12)

Sweet-toothed fiends need to get the Banana French Toast, served with maple syrup and rum creme ($12)

Possibly my current favorite for French toast in LA. It's moist, but not too rich or dense, and OMG, that rum creme...

More cocktail (they're all good, really) ...  It's only appropriate to have a cocktail with plantain at a place like this, right? Platano Suave (Dominican rum, plantain, lime, juice, honey)

If you still have room for dessert, don't miss the "Home skillet" bread pudding (ciabatta bread pudding with pears, raisins, topped with vanilla ice cream)

Roy Choi has a pretty diverse repertoire across his restaurants, but one thing they have in common is that they all serve comfort food with rich, bold flavors. Backed by a beautiful space and wonderful cocktails, Sunny Spot has become a quintessential Venice restaurant.
