Cassopolis, MI

 8/18/23 WOOD:

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. (WOOD) — Newly-released surveillance video shows a Cass County gas station customer firing seven shots at a suspected armed robber, all while holding a six-pack of light beer.

The July 27 shooting at the Stone Lake Marathon Mini Mart seriously injured the suspect, who had armed himself with a box cutter....

“You know why I’m here” is how the robber announced himself that day, according to police reports.

The gas station surveillance video showed the customer holding a six-pack of Miller Lite as the suspect, dressed in black, walked in.

The suspect, identified in court records as Cordelius Anthony Martin, 35, of Dowagiac, pulled a mask over his face.

Another angle showed him approaching the store clerk.

Police said he threatened the clerk with a box cutter.

Houston, TX

1/6/23 KHOU:

HOUSTON — A customer at Ranchito Taqueria shot and killed a man who robbed the restaurant in southwest Houston late Thursday night, according to the Houston Police Department.

It happened just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the restaurant on S. Gessner near Bellaire Boulevard.

Houston police said the armed man in a mask came inside the restaurant, demanding money and wallets from customers. However, as he was leaving, one of those customers shot the suspect.

As this analysis at Legal Insurrection observes the first eight shots fired either clearly or ambiguously meet the definition of lawful self-defense.  The 9th shot to an inert and disarmed person's head did not.

It is still a lawful self-defense until that point.

Virginia Beach, VA

8/29/19 Virginian-Pilot:
It had already been a long and emotional day for the Virginia Beach man when he walked into a 7-Eleven store to buy a Big Gulp.
He’d just been involved in a heated argument with his stepfather, and police had been called to the house. After talking to officers, it took him more than an hour to walk back to his conversion van, which was parked near his work.
The vehicle wasn’t working at the time, but he’d been living in it for a few weeks. Once he got there, he realized his canteen was empty.
“I said, ‘Well, it looks like you’re going to 7-Eleven.’”
When he arrived, the 37-year-old headed to the fountain drink machine, paying little attention to the din of chatter inside the South Newtown Road store. After pouring his favorite strawberry-melon flavored iced tea into a cup, he walked toward the cash register on the other side of the counter.
“I’m sipping on my Big Gulp, and this red beam cuts into my drink,” said the man, who agreed to tell The Virginian-Pilot what happened July 25 on the condition he not be identified.
While one robber stuffed his pockets with money, the other leaned over the counter with his gun fixed on the store clerk....
While the robbers focused on the cash and the clerk, the man touched the 9 mm handgun hidden in a holster under his T-shirt with his pinkie. No one noticed. He knew he had about 10 rounds in the clip....
“I’m thinking about all of that and at the same time thinking, you’re supposed to have the right to bear arms, the right to protect yourself, the right to protect others if need be,” he said.
“I’m like 'Man, you say you believe in the Second Amendment. You say you believe in America. You know God’s got you.'”
Still holding his drink in one hand, he fired first at the robber behind the counter. He aimed for his shoulder, he said, but ended up hitting him in the neck.
“He hollered, and I think that distracted (the other gunman) because he wasn’t thinking that was going to happen," the man said. "Nobody thought that was going to happen. He’s probably emotional and distraught because he was in control up to that point.”
The robber behind the counter fell. The one who’d had his gun pointed at the clerk turned to see where the shot had come from. With that weapon now turned in his direction, the man fired two more shots. Both hit the second robber in his torso, killing him.

Clackamas County, OR

5/24/19 KOIN:
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A would-be robber of a convenience store brought a hatchet as a weapon. He ran when the clerk pulled out a gun.
The April 28 incident at the Oak Grove Plaid Pantry was captured on surveillance video and just released by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
The video shows a man walk into the Plaid Pantry around 1 a.m., walk up to the counter and pull a 12-inch hatchet from his pants. He shows it to the clerk, who then pulls out a gun.
As the clerk picked up the phone to call 911, the robber slid the hatchet across the counter, put his hands up and reportedly said, "I'm sorry. I'll leave." He then ran out of the store.
Never bring a hatchet to a gunfight.
The president of Plaid Pantry told KOIN 6 News the stores have a zero tolerance for weapons and the clerk is no longer employed there. He said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury.
I think he de-escalated the situation just fine.  Boycott Plaid Pantry, and someone find that man a job!  The video is here.

Wichita, KS

1/3/19 KAKE:
The number of homicides rose by 13 percent in 2018, the highest in decades, justifiable homicides more than doubling.  The chief sat down with KAKE's Pilar Pedraza to take a closer look at what's going on.
"A significant number of the homicides in 2018 have a drug connection," he said.
Police investigated a total of 44 homicides in Wichita last year.  A homicide legally is when one human kills another.  Some homicides are legal, some are crimes.
It started on January 8th with what's called a justifiable homicide, a case of self-defense.
"Our first two homicides were one incident - where a homeowner...had people at his door with guns and he shot and killed both of them," Ramsay said.  "And that's how the year started out,  was our first two homicides were  justifiable."
Justifiable homicides climbed to a high of nine confirmed last year, with Chief Ramsay expecting a shooting last week to become number ten on that list.
"You know when we look at last week's, very obviously justified you know, with a store being robbed. He had had a gun pointed in his face."

Jacksonville, FL

6/12/18 WSVN:
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Police say a man who tried to carjack two people was thwarted after the victims both pulled out guns to protect themselves.
According to Fox 30, Jacksonville police officers arrested 36-year-old Christopher Raymond Hill, charging him with strong-arm robbery, carjacking with firearm or deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and trespassing.
Detectives said the incident began when Hill robbed a Walmart liquor store, and attempted to flee in a silver Ford SUV. However, witnesses said the vehicle would not start, so he first tried to carjack Scott Reardean at knifepoint, cutting him on his arms and legs.
“I reached in between my glove box and my console, between my seats, reached down and got my weapon and brandished it for him,” Reardean told WJXT. “He was like, ‘Don’t shoot me.’ I was like, ‘Then get out of here.’”
Hill then jumped into the passenger seat of a woman’s car in a Starbucks drive-thru. Police said the woman got out of her car and grabbed a pistol from her trunk, pointing it at Hill until he ran off.

Milford, CT

A customer with a gun permit chased out two alleged armed robbers on Friday at the Milford Smash Burger, police said. The two suspects were later found by police and arrested.
Royshon Ferguson, 21, and Gregory McLaurin, 22, both of New Haven, are facing numerous charges, including first-degree robbery, first-degree threatening and first-degree kidnapping with a firearm.
Ferguson and McLaurin allegedly entered the restaurant armed with a .22 caliber handgun and ordered all the workers and customers into the restaurant’s kitchen at gunpoint, police said. McLaurin told the manager to open the safe and he started taking the money out while Ferguson went back toward the front of the restaurant to empty the registers, police said.
That’s when a customer, a permitted pistol owner, “saw an opportunity to change the situation,” police said.
The customer, who was not identified, drew his firearm, pointing it at McLaurin, police said. McLaurin panicked, and ran out of the kitchen as the customer chased him. McLaurin ran out of the building leaving Ferguson behind, police said.
The customer then went after Ferguson, who still had the gun in his hand and was taking money out of the registers. Ferguson also panicked when he saw the customer’s gun. The customer then held Ferguson down and knocked the gun out of Ferguson’s hand, police said.

Police have said two masked robbers entered the restaurant early Wednesday and ordered three employees to lie on the floor. Police say three other employees pulled out handguns and opened fire, shooting one of the suspects six times. The other suspect ran off.
