5 year old Funnies

Where has the time gone?!
It's been forever since I recorded a few funnies
from our very amazing, crazy life. :)

Recently our little newly 5 year old has acquired a new skill set.
Talkin' back.
Oh, yeh.
It's here....

But when he says things like,
"You know? I could get you fired." to his Papa...
or
"You're worm poop." to me...
{granted, this was right after learning about compost,
and that it's basically- you guessed it- worm poop. ha!}
It's really hard to keep a straight face, and discipline this new "skill".

The fired comment has made me giggle all week so far.
Everytime I think about it,
about what that could possibly mean to a little 5 year old
Preacher's Kid- PK- as they're fondly called sometimes...
Oh. my. goodness.
Watch out Sunday School teachers. haha.

Thankfully, it's really not a terrible habit *yet*.
It's just an occasional response, usually after a moment of frustration,
or friction in the parent/child relationship.
Thank God for giving us this brilliant-minded, quick-witted child,
who gives us things to laugh about,
even when he's talking back.

Chocolate Lover at 1??

I would not give my baby a spoon...
and some chocolate pudding,
and let her go for it.
Right?!
I would not begin to see the all too familiar grins of a sugar high...
And realize that a 15 month old can be a chocolate addict,
just like her great grandma, and many others she's related to.

Don't believe how cute this could possibly be?
Making you want to run the other way and bathe,
or thinking I am a little crazy to let her get this dirty?
Watch this, and tell me it wasn't worth
every.
fingerlicking.
last.
second.
{Feel free to stop watching after 45 seconds or so, I don't have any video editing software.}

Oh, and you'll notice... this video was taken on a different occasion with the chocolate pudding too. Yes, I think my child must indeed be a chocolate lover. :)

On a side note... I am once again out of town this week.
We're taking the teens from our youth group to Christian summer camp!
Wahoo for us!
I haven't done summer camp since I was a teen myself. :)
I'm excited to catch the "fountain of youth" energy,
listen to some amazing, inspirational preaching & teaching,
not having to cook for an entire week (that's an odd thing to be excited about when going to camp, I suppose! lol.),
seeing our church's teens grow spiritually,
exposing our children to this environment,
getting to rub shoulders with other pastors/youth pastors from the SE.

I'm a little worried about taking my 3 kiddos,
about not having enough clothes that meet the "dress code",
that we will come back from this trip totally exhausted,
and that we won't get to have a typical, relaxing "Independence Day" celebration as we typically make a huge deal out of every year.
But all that being said... I really don't even care.
Bring it on!
We're going to summer camp.

Brown Paper Packages...

Which would you rather do?

Jump off of them, and have a really great time. Use your imagination, and catch some air- Be Free!

Or open the (Shh! It's the boy's Christmas present) Brown Paper Package?

If this box came, in my name? I'd be ripping it open. But that's because I'm an adult, who lacks the imagination, the careless abandon, and creativity of a child.

If this box came in my boys' names? They'd do this.

Oh, and while we're talking about careless abandonment... yes, I know my children have no pants on. This is their preferred mode of dressing. I don't mind. I only require that they wear pants when we are around other humans. :) Don't you wish you had the same careless abondon as my children?!! lol.

Finding the silver-lining.

I admit it. I'm not very good at finding the "silver-lining". I wish I were more like that. I'm working on it. See?

Today, and pretty much the last week has been "one-of-those-days". We've been sick. We've been sleepless. I've had a few psychotic breakdowns moments of counting to 10 while trying to take care of the kids. My hubby's been gone most of the time, which of course makes me realize how much I miss what he brings to the home when he is here. See? There's the silver-lining! lol. I found it. :)

I've also been mulling over Christmas plans. Trying to line up all our church parties, family activities, travelling arrangements, present buying. Pretty much- the frenzied, maddening pace of Christmas has started off with a bang already. But, it is nice to have plans rather than sit at home twiddling our thumbs. (Yeah right! When have we ever done that?! lol) See? Another silver lining. Or, maybe that wasn't one.?? I'm still learning about these silver-linings, so pardon me.

Oh, and the crafts! I've been trying hard to get the advent calendar finished so we can get started on it! Since I've been the primary caregiver most of the waking moments of the day, I just haven't gotten to it! It's either the mountain of laundry or the calendar. The stack of dishes or the calendar. Fix dinner or the calendar. And tonight? It was laundry or the treadmill... no calendar even on the radar. Hmm... of course, my wifely/motherly duties have had to come first. No matter how much I want to get that thing done! I'll give you a sneak peak though, 'cuz I think it's gonna be so cute when it's finished! Silver. Lining. Folks!

Me working late into the night on it.

It's getting there! Still needing a lot of sewing, gluing, laminating,
Oh, forget it! I'm never gonna get it done.

Oops! I was supposed to be finding the silver lining.

Honestly though, the silver lining today?

  • My beautiful children... and the fact that when the Polar Express music on my blog comes on, they get this angelic look on their faces, and crowd around the computer or sit on the couch and try to sing the songs.

  • My daughter also "singing" lalalala... we've been practicing singing those very words you see. She's so brilliant! I sing "fa-la-la-la-laaaa La-la-la-laaaa!", and she sings "la-la-la-la Laaa!" back to me. It's one of the most darling things I've seen any of my babies do. And she graced me with it today on a day that I needed a little silver in the lining.

  • The fact that my boys can entertain themselves for a good 30 minutes in the big bathtub. You'd better believe they've been getting way more baths than usual lately! lol. I'll take any 30 minutes of no bickering/wrestling/whining etc... I can get!

  • My hubby working so hard for us to be able to live comfortably, and buy our children presents for Christmas. It brings tears to my eyes. We really miss him when he's not here though.

  • How sweet it was that my hubby decided to work from our home computer for a few hours this afternoon while the kids were sleeping- and insisted that I go lay down for a nap too- that he had it "covered"- since he knew I was getting close to another psychotic breakdown the end of my motherly tolerance. Unfortunatley, he had to leave before any of us were up. But it was really good to catch a few Zzz's! I sure did need them.

So that's been the silver linings in my day... does that refer to some dark rain cloud? I think so! Haha.

Anyways, hope y'all have a really great 1st weekend of December! I'm not doing my normal posts this week... and probably won't be "normal" around the blog for the entire month. But I'll do my best to get on here as much as I can.

Blessings, Y'all! -Sarah

Funnies

The kiddos have been saying some pretty cute things lately, and I'd better get them blogged before I forget it!

JJ's latest crazes:
  • Chi.A! (Chik-Fil-A, for those of you who don't speak 2yr old!)
  • ShA-E-ShA! (Steak-n-Shake)
  • Hunky Gabe (Which is his newest stand in name for Uncle Gabe, my brother)
  • He also decided he likes the "Yuckies" (Yankees) since he heard Rachael Ray say "how 'bout them Yankees" on her show this morning! Lol!
Wesley's:
  • When an older lady in the church asked if she could be his grandma away from home, he replied, "Nooo! I've got Grammy, Nana, and that other guy!" Lol. Umm... That other guy?! I guess maybe that is Pops? or Grampy? Haha!
  • When going into the pantry to get a can of peaches, after I told him that I wanted to do it, he said, "I know it's an adult job, Mommy; but, it can be a boy job, too." Aww! He's such a sweetie.
  • And, last night, as I got up in the middle of the night with him, it made it all worthwhile when he said, "Mommy, you're my best friend." and "Mommy, will you pray for me to get better?" I just love those moments as a Mom. It makes me feel like getting up in the middle of the night isn't that big of a deal. Well, sort of. :)

Just call me Queen of Catan!

I have enjoyed quite a few wins at the board game Settlers of Catan, and have even more enjoyed the smack talk that has gone down after the game. I'm not a very "strategic" kind of gal. So, for me to win a strategy game is unusual. But alas, someone must do it! lol

Seriously, though, if you have never played the game, you should! It's tons of fun. Just make sure you have 2-3 hours before you sit down to do it.

Oh, and I'm definitely posting a few pics of my opponent, Toby, who rises to the occasion, and dresses for the game nights.

And, while I'm at it... I'm going to copy over a paragraph of smack talk from Facebook the other night so I can enjoy it for many, many years to come (when my worthy opponents have begun to beat me, and I no longer am the Queen of Catan). :)

Toby Neal Just Letting everyone know now, It was I who won the Catan Game this very night! Oh wait, I read the score backwards, thats not 14, that is 4.... Uh...Fri at 1:09am ·

Sarah Friend Harrigan Ha! You wish.

Toby Neal Woah! Hold the phone!

Toby Neal That was un-called for!

Sarah Friend Harrigan Nana-booboo! ;p (hahaha!)

Toby Neal YOU ARE SO GOING DOWN!!! ARRGH!

Sarah Friend Harrigan Bring it!

Toby NealI spew cyber-spit wads in your general direction!

Sarah Friend Harrigan Ok, that's just gross... eww! I'm wiping my face off right now. LOL

Toby Neal Till we meet again, my catan menace!

Sarah Friend Harrigan You feel the need to get creamed again? So soon?!? (haha! I know. I know... I'm going DOWN!)

Toby Neal The Insult! My next game is for revenge!!!! And this time I will take no prisoners!

Sarah Friend Harrigan Prisoners of War??? What??? Whoa.

Diane Friend Excuse me now that the children have all gone to bed!! I am at least in the same league as the Catan queen hello

Toby Neal I have nothing more to say, its ON!

Mike Harrigan I find it interesting that the two women bragging about their supposed Catan success are very closely related and have enjoyed late game trades from each other, mind you, to facilitate these one sided victories. Hmmmmm. Makes one think.

But this know, the Supreme Ruler of the Axis of Evil will have his revenge.

Sarah Friend Harrigan excuses, excuses... blah, blah, blah. keep trying. you might be a challenge one of these days. until then, don't be hating those of us who actually WIN!!

and another little post regarding this night of winning...

Sarah Friend Harrigan just stomped all over Toby Neal , Diane Friend , and Mike Harrigan in CATAN!! Yep... I'm the Catan queen. :) Fri at 1:05am ·

Diane Friend Excuse me now that the children have all gone to bed!! I am at least in the same league as the Catan queen hello

Sarah Friend Harrigan Well, let us see... you won once when the Queen wasn't playing, and hmm... the other win- I gave it to you! ;p Oh yes... The Queen of Catan still reigns. bwa-hahaha!

Diane Friend I hate to inform you Mike your wife is winning all on her own and is smack talkin all of us

So that pretty much gives you an idea of how intense Catan can get! Lol! Actually, we were just havin' fun. I'm pretty sure everybody has won a few times themselves. It's fun! Let's play sometime soon.

I hate carpet, but sure am glad for it... and other such blunders!

Today was a day that I looked forward to yesterday. Man! I just confused myself- ya with me so far?! Lol. So, we were planning to take the kiddos over to Dallas for the State Fair- they do it for a whole month here- a lot longer than they did in Las Cruces. We awoke to an 80% chance of rain, and yep- it was raining outside. Yuck! So that ended our anticipated plans. Needless to say, I have had one of those days today.

On a side note, How many rainy days is considered a lot? Everybody here in Greenville thinks we're going through a drought, but all it's done since we lived here is RAIN!!

Back to today... we took the kiddos over to Pre-K at the Library as an alternative fun thing to do. They love it, and it gives us/me a "break". Sorta. Not really. But I like to imagine it does. :) When the teacher started introducing what day it was, she was telling the kids that today's name started with a T. Well, my sensors went up- 'No way! She is telling the kids the wrong day! Why would she get the day wrong??! She's a teacher for Pete's sake.' So, I just about started telling her that 'NO! Today is Wednesday NOT Tuesday!'. Then, I had this split-second thought- 'Oh! wait! I don't know what the day is, the date is, the month, the year, my kid's names, my name, where I live, my phone number... (you get the point- I'm a scarecrow!) most of the time; so maybe? just maybe, she IS right?!' Whoo! I'm glad I kept my mouth shut. Sure enough, today IS Tuesday! LOL Did you know that? *giggle* I think the other parents may have kicked me outta the library if I had proceeded with the original plan of action. Haha!

Ok, so you might be asking me what my entry title has to do with today so far- well, I'm getting to it. :) This afternoon our darlings were all hanging out in the general vicinity of my lap, and my littlest darling is just learning to crawl, and becoming quite mobile. I had my hand on her, but had allowed her to lay down on the footrest of the couch in front of me. Poor dear darling- she slipped off the footrest, and landed right smack dab on her head! Oh, my... it was like her world (and mine, too) just about ended. She cried so hard, and looked at me like- Mommy, why would you let such a thing happen to me? I wanted to cry too. Alas, she has taken her first fall. :( I'm sad I wasn't able to catch her, but I guess it happens to every baby at some time or another. And...

wait for it...

I hate carpet, but sure am glad for it today. Haha! (there, I worked in my title) Don't you hate carpet too? I have had minimal carpeting for years until we moved a year ago. It just absorbs so much dirt, and stains, and gross! Not what I want my kids playing on, but guess I'm glad that Aliyah fell on carpeting and not wood or tile floor. :)

Wesley says Don't forget the "W" (for Wesley), so I'm putting a W on here for him! :) Ok, I must go find my JJ's golf ball.

Blessings! -Sarah

"High-Highs-haha!; Low-Lows-boohoo!"

There's a song I wish I could add to this post which would pretty much put in a nutshell what I'd like to say. The preschool and toddler years are full of learning to deal with emotions. What is "socially acceptable", and what is not! Suffice it to say, we've had our share of learning what is not acceptable. Lately, I've noticed Wesley is going through the "high- Highs" and "low- Lows". :) Mostly, he's been melting down over what he wants to wear (right now he MUST wear his black soccer shorts, with his Thomas tennis shoes!! every. day.), or what he wants or should I say doesn't want to eat! LOL Sometimes in the moment, these things aren't very funny, then become really funny upon review of the day. He also seems to get hysterically giddy about things he finds funny- usually something that's not that funny! Justin gets into the action a lot too- with these things called temper tantrums! yikes- those are not fun. However, just a few moments before or after a melt-down, he then is the sweetest little boy EVER! Being mommy to these two is never dull.

So, it got me thinking: While we as adults have learned to control our emotions or at the very least hide them when they're not quite socially acceptable, I wonder how many of us really have those High-highs, and Low-lows going on in our mind. ?? I'm more of a melancholy person, so I'm pretty sure I'll never stop feeling deeply. I'm dramatic- I'll admit it! My hubby is the opposite, naturally; however, I still think he feels deeply, even if he doesn't totally admit it most of the time. Do you feel deeply? Just wondering.

ETA: I've added the song to my playlist over there on the right- - it's called Sometimes. Enjoy!
Blessings!- Sarah

"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine"

Proverbs 17:22 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine", and I can attest to this. :) My sweet son Wesley, and my darling daughter Aliyah were sitting on my lap last night after Justin had laid down for the night. I wasn't in a "bad mood" particularly, but my heart was lightened immensely as they began to play together. Wesley was pretending to give Aliyah little puppy kisses ("schloop!"- while sticking his tongue out). I think they may have the best combination of personalities... Wes loves to be comedic, and Aliyah loves to laugh. :) So while they were sitting there, giggling, and getting louder and louder with their "merriment", my heart was getting a really good taste of "medicine".  My heart was swelling, and I found myself laughing along with them. It does my heart good to see them playing so happily together.

It's during these times that I get a glimpse of what wonderful people God gave us in our family. I'm so happy that I have been given the three children that we have. Their little personalities are all so unique, and so wonderful. Yes, there will be the daily drudgery of dealing with conflict, diapers, feeding, and all the other motherly things that take up my entire day right now; but there's also awesome, amazing times like last night that will linger & warm my heart for many years to come. I want to remember what it was like to see the sparkle in Aliyah's eyes as she giggled and soaked up her brother's attention. I want to remember seeing Wesley being sweet to his little sister, and doing things to make her laugh. I love laughing with my children- and sometimes at them too. :) They bring a lot of joy to my heart, and during the daily duties, I plan on remembering these little things to help the day pass along a little sweeter.

The great pumpkin! or maybe not so great.

While grocery shopping tonight, Wesley decided he "needed" a pumpkin. :) It was so cute! Then we got up to the cashier, and things went not so good. There wasn't a tag on it, and the cashier didn't have a price for it. Mike went back to get the price, but the manager ended up going back himself to get the price- kinda weird. Mike was not wanting to wait for the little pumpkin, but we ended up waiting because Wesley was watching that pumpkin like a hawk! there was no way he was not getting it. lol! When we got home tonight, he started asking when we were going to make something with his pumpkin. haha! I'm telling you... he's such an activity coordinator! Do you see the picture of that pumpkin?! Ummm... I don't think we'll be making anything with that little thing, but maybe I'll just open up a can of pumpkin from the pantry, and make pumpkin bars or something in honor of his great pumpkin. :) That sounds good anyways! A nice welcome to fall, and all thanks to our little pumpkin. hehee. By the way, he's sitting next to me right now saying, " I love my punkin...". hahaa!

Chunky Boats!

Recently our boys have been venturing out of their typical morning cereal- cheerios or frosted mini-wheats- to try a few different ones. They have been enjoying Honey Bunches of Oats, and Grammy's banana granola. A couple days ago, Grammy asked JJ if he wanted cheerios for breakfast, and he said, "Nooo! Chunky Boats!" Grammy thought he just wanted to play with boats, and not eat right then. He kept saying, "Chunky Boats! Chunky Boats!" :) All of the sudden it clicked to me what he was saying... Chunky Boats was Honey bunches of Oats! hahaha! Shall we say that in the Harrigan household, there's a good chance that Honey Bunches of Oats will now be called Chunky Boats- Forever! So if I ever offer you a bowl of Chunky Boats, you'll know what I'm talking about.

If I could have one thing...

The other night during family devotions, Mike was reading the story of Solomon to the boys. After completing the story, he started to review with simple questions. Upon reviewing how Solomon asked God for wisdom, he then asked them if they could have one thing, what would it be? (mind you, we're talking about a 2 and a 3 year old!) Wesley thought about it, then popped out with "Golf!" :) Shortly thereafter, Justin agreed that indeed, "olf" was the one thing that he would want too. This made their Papa's heart happy since he's been on a golf-kick of late. They've been going to the golf range with him at least once a week to get some practice puts & chips in... so now apparently they wouldn't want to live life without golf. Maybe I should just go for this whole golf craze, and get me a Tiger Woods like child prodigy, and then he could go on the PGA tour. :)

Squash Face!

Aliyah's "squash face" at 5 months:

Each Harrigan baby's 1st baby food (after rice cereal) has been squash. This started innocently from reading the "What to Expect" books on what to introduce first while Wesley was a baby. Poor thing! LOL I think I did everything according to the book at that point, and pretty much made sure it was done "just so". During the 1st feeding, Mike, belovedly called Papa by our kiddos, got such a huge kick out of the faces Wesley made, that he decided it was their initiation into eating solid foods. And, so Justin made it through the whole squash initiation... and tonight, Aliyah also got to experience it. :) She actually did the best of the three. There wasn't much of a "squash face" (imagine our beautiful babies with a scrunched up face, wanting to spit what was in their mouths out, but not knowing how- and that would sum up "squash face"). She kinda looked like, "what is this?" "this doesn't quite taste like the cereal y'all have been feeding me". I don't think she cared for it much though. haha! I don't blame her really. Baby food squash doesn't look very good. Gotta love the pictures though... I hope I can dig up the pics from Wes & JJ as well!
