Summer Fun Ends When Corn Harvest Begins

*If you don't like looking at lots of pictures, then you run away now, cause this post is loaded with them! ;)

SO, I really have no idea where the month of July went to, but it sure did fly by...Shoot August is now over halfway done too! It doesn't really feel like we ever really slowed down since Wheat Harvest got over with.

We celebrated the 4th with our little firecrackers....

It's been so long ago now, I can't remember if we were done with wheat harvest or not.

I think we were and that we were still planting beans.

After that was done the guys were back in the hay field finishing up....

Hay seemed to drag out forever this year....and I still didn't get any pics. I got some back in the spring, but I didn't go and look for them.

After we were finally finished with all that it was farm show time...

Which means drive an hour to talk with all your neighbors.

Fact: Caleb and his dad stood in the same spot for I don't know how long, but three different groups of guys came along and they never moved, just kept talking. Chester and I walked around while this was going on. ;)

Chester's goal was to climb on everything...

We came close to doing that!

This time of the year we don't check our cattle everyday, because they have grass to eat and water in the pond, but every Sunday we try to go for a drive (after we took our Oh soo important naps) and check some of the herds. If we are checking the ones close to the house we take the gator other wise we will take the truck.

When you have kids this is about as good as it gets for a family picture.

He love's opening gates....

I hope that continues to be the case when he gets bigger, but I kinda doubt it.

Then there was sweet corn, where Miss Sally got up close and personal with us.

I don't remember how many bags I put away that day, but all I can say is my how was a total wreck cause I didn't do anything else and pretty much let Chester do whatever he wanted to do....

But hey I have sweet corn in the freezer now!

Chester also dug his potatoes and too first place with both his red and white potatoes. He was very excited about it!

Then Caleb and I took a very much needed trip with no kiddos. I missed my babies, but it was sure nice to get away!

We kayaked down a river in SW Missouri. It was our fist time ever using a kayak and we loved it.....I now want my own kayak for Christmas!!!

On one of our Sunday afternoon drives I made Caleb help me in taking pictures of the kiddos. He wined and complained about it, and then he saw the pics and loved them and was so very glad we took the time to do it. I loved them all so much!  I will try and do another post and share them all cause they were so fun!

Every once in awhile we would get a rain, but it usually wouldn't last long and then the sun would come out and we would get a beautiful rainbow!

Somewhere in the middle of all this I was also taking picture of our friends son, who will be a senior this next year. We took farm pics back durning wheat harvest, and then at the end of July we did some baseball pics....

With fire!!

I won't lie these pics were hard for me, but by the end I kinda had if figured out and Love the way they turned out!

About a week or so ago we were able to make a trip to  NE Missouri to hang with my family and help my dad feed his cattle

And Chester got to go swimming with Grandma.

Caleb and I drove around and visited some of my favorite places

We also visited the newest addition to the farm, Porkey.

One the way back home we stopped at the Missouri State Fair (one of my favorite places) where we saw a lot of Porkey's cousins.

Chester asked every pig "Hey pig, what ya doin' "

Chester made friends with a sweet little girl and her pig.

And we ate ice cream....oh boy was it good!!!

And now with all the traveling and going out of our system, it's time to get back to work and start doing something. So Corn Harvest 2014 here we come!!

These are some pics I took from our neighbors field, but we actually started yesterday. The corn was still a little wet, but give it a day or so and we will be going strong, which is why the kids and I made a run to town yesterday to load up on food supplies so we will be ready to feed the guys when they are running all day long.

There are days while we are in harvest that we are so very tired and ready for it all to be over and done with, but at the same time we love every minute of it. We love planting, we love tending to it and watching it grow....but we really love harvesting it and seeing the fruits of our labor. So we may look a little sleepy over the next few weeks, but we wouldn't trade it for the world.

Mooooo

So now that my head is clear to think again I thought I would share with you what's goin' on with life here on the farm.....Well it's kinda slow....

Slow might not be the right word, it's less varied right now. We stay busy, but its doing the same thing pretty much each day....

That is we feed Cattle everyday, and that's about it. Ok there is some other stuff, but it's boring stuff so we aren't gonna talk about tit right now.

It's cold and there is no grass so a lot of hay is being fed.

And ate.

If they weren't cows I would call them pigs....

I don't go out everyday, but Chester and I usually try and make it out at least once a week, and some times he doesn't make through feeding all the cattle without falling asleep.

This guy always likes to tag along as well. I'm not sure why but he always looks so pathetic in all the pictures I have of him.

This is probably opne of my favorite cows cause she throws some awesome caves!!

And oddly enough I haven't named her yet, I haven't came across an name that I like just yet.

Any suggestions??

The boys stopped to say hi to the camera....the bigger one is Tom and the smaller one is Lenard.

This is another one of my favorite cows....

She's just pretty....and the pretty sun on her pretty black coat makes her look even prettier!

Until we meet again.

Happy Anniversary to Us

It's amazing how time flies. A good example of this is, yesterday my little boy turned one...Crazy I know, but I'm not here to talk about him today. A little over a week ago Caleb and I celebrated our 4th anniversary. I really just can't believe it. It's just flown by and has been wonderful and amazing. He's my bestfriend, and I can't imagine life without him.

Ok, that's enough of the ushy gushy stuff, lest get the good stuff, the real reason I am talking with you about our anniversary.

Well, out of all four anniversary's that we have had we never really planned anything special. Usually it has been me cooking a nice meal and us hangin' out at the house, or last year since I was about to pop, we went out to eat cause I really didn't want to do any cooking!

So about a month ago I found out that the "Lion King" off Broadway was preforming in Wichita. I have always wanted to see it. I really wanted to go to New York City, but I'm not sure that will actually ever happen, so I did some begging and finally got Caleb talked into going out to see it on our actual anniversary.

It's about a 2 hour trip out there and we were gonna eat out before going and we were going to the 7:30 showing.  My plan was to leave between 1 and 2.  That way I could do a little shopping. Well here's the problem, I had a plan. You might think I would have learned, after almost 30 years of being on a farm, not to make a plan cause everything goes wrong when I do.

Side note - yes I said almost 30 years...I have less than two months, but I'm not there yet. lol

Anyways back to my story.

Well after running some errands in the morning and then dropping Chester of and Grandma's house, we were heading back to the house to get ready to go we noticed a cow out in one of our pastures that looked like she was dead...

First we are thinking "oh crap" cause a) we hate loosing an animal's and b) because we didn't want to mess with it right now.

Don't these cows know that I have a tickets to the "Lion King"? I don't have time to mess with a dead cow.....grrr!

Well good news after headin' out to check on her we found that she was just laying funny and was up and doin' fine by the time we got out to her.

While we were out there I had Caleb go look at the neighbor's cow that was out in our pasture, cause Caleb thought it was a bull and I said it was a cow and I wanted to prove I was right...

And just so you know, I was! ;)

While looking at her we discovered we didn't have just one of the neighbors cows in the pasture but we had two cows and a calf. We thought it would be a good idea to try and push the cows and calf back towards their pasture in hopes they would go back in where they got out, that's when we discovered the hole.

Now we aren't just talking about a couple of wires between two post on the ground, we are talking about a 50 foot stretch of fence where all 5 strands of wire are on the ground. How we didn't have both herds mixed together is amazing.

Well after discovering this we decide to run back to the house and get the 4-wheeler (cause the calf was kinda crazy acting and didn't want to go in with just the truck) as well as all the fencing supplies.

So we get things loaded up and head back over there and push the critters in without any problems.

At this point my belly is in knots, because.....

-I'm hungry, it's past 1 pm and I haven't eaten.
-I'm anxious about getting this fence fixed and getting to Wichita in time to eat and go to the show.
-I keep thinking I still need to shower and shave my legs so I can wear this cute dress I have.

We have two choices when it come to fixing this fence we can do a quick fix - patch it up fast and then come back later and fix it right...and by later I mean come back when the cows get out again, or we can re-stretch the wire and fix it right.

Caleb goes for the "fix it right" choice which I know is the best thing to do, but my mind keeps going back to me getting to wear my cute dress and that I still need to shower and shave and then I will have blow dry and fix my hair and maybe I should just wear jeans and a tank-top, throw my hair in a wet messy bun, and not worry about shaving, so we can make it out there in time to eat, get parked and see the show....

Just so you know, most decisions I make revolve around my stomach.

So to work, we must go....and by we I mean mostly Caleb. I did a little bit, but mostly waited till he got the wire all stretched and then started hooking it back to the fence post's

While we were working the ladies we had just gotten in came back with a friend to show her the the hole, only to find the wires stretched up so they couldn't get through.

A little later the rest of the heard came to see what was going on and inspect the fence to see if they can get through it.

Finally we got it all up and finished. Before we started all the wires were about as high as the bottom wire.

When it was all said and done we did get to make it to "The Lion King", and it was wonderful! I LOVE it, and Caleb really enjoyed it too....and that's sayin' something. :)

Also I got to eat, but not after having to send my steak back because my medium-rare steak came out medium-well, and that's not ok with me, especially when I am payin' almost $20 for it!

Oh, and I got to shower, fix my hair, and

Even shave so I could wear my cute little dress.

Peace, Love, Crazy Cows,

JP
