I'm not quite sure how it got to 9th December already - that means it's only a couple of weeks to the big day! I'm not at all ready and I still have so much to do that I'm running around like crazy and trying to wrap and post parcels, write cards, send them in the mail.
Tomorrow my dear brother in law is coming to stay for a couple of days so we are having a
n early 'mini Christmas ' to celebrate with him.
While we're doing that, I'll be posting up a little Christmas readers' giveaway for the 12 days of Christmas - more details of that to come asap (hopefully tomorrow before the visitor arrives!)
So while I was planning and trying to get organised with that, I also checked out Amazon and was delighted to find that they're running a small sale on some of my books in the last minute Christmas deals. Not sure how long for, but if you're quick and want to grab a kindle edition of these titles, you can get one for £0.99
Titles available are:
Kept For Her Baby
The Sicilian's Red-Hot Revenge
Bedded by the Greek Billionaire
Constantine's Revenge
Wife for a Day
No Holding Back
Flirting with Danger
Oh, and the complete Alcolar Family trilogy (3 books in one) is available for £1.99
Finally - if you are interested in learning about writing romance, then Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance is on sale with 11% off the paperback bringing the price down from £11.99 to £10.62 - maybe you know someone who'd like to find a copy n their Christmas stocking or under the tree?

How about some Plotting for the weekend?
I have some more courses coming up - in November at Lilleshall with Relax and Write -
But perhaps you can't find the time to share a weekend with other writers - or you're not in the UK so the travel is impossible for you,
Well, I have perhaps the next best thing for you. To mark the publication of the revised and updated new version of the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance, the lovely editors of the Pink Heart Society have invited me along to their Aspiring Authors Forum where I'll be running a special 12 Points Course with new information, advice and questions and answers every day.
I'm sure you've seen the Pink Heart Society but if you haven't you really should take a look and discover what they have to offer - every month there are new and
fascinating articles on Romance and Romance Writing - advice for writers and readers - and a special giveaway section with free books to win as prizes!
And if you join the forum the Aspiring Authors section will offer workshops, advice, discussions . . .
So that's where you'll find me. We've already started discussing writing from the heart - and tomorrow we'll look at the first of the 12 Points for this workshop.
See you there? Hope so
I
can't believe it's Friday - who stole my week?? I'm sure
it was only yesterday that I was setting out for York for a very special RNA
meeting - an afternoon tea in The Guildhall. Then I blinked and - it's Friday!
A week later. Help!
Special thanks have to go to Lynda Stacey and Jane Lovering
who planned and organised the whole thing. So good to have a meeting 'up North'
instead of having to journey to London each and every time.
It was a great chance to meet up with friends I don't get a
chance to see too often - way too often Anna Louise Lucia - Marie Frances
Ingrid Petrie Kim Elizabeth Lain Jean Fullerton Vasiliki Scurfield . . . Oh
dear, I'll miss people out I know I will.
I can’t wait – this is a very special event, shared with some very special people and every year I look forward to it so much. But planning the course I’ll be teaching and getting organised for the journey and the week in Wales always takes some doing. (Yes, I know I’ve taught the course before – perhaps a dozen times, and it is always based on my 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance - but I’m always looking for new ways of making it interesting and enjoyable.) Then there’s the cats to plan for. We have been training up new ‘cat sitters’, two lovely girls who will be sharing the duties between them. It’s great to know that Charlie and Ruby are able to stay in their own home and be looked after every day. But that was another thing to organise.
So I've talked about the courses I run for Writers' Holidays - but perhaps Fishguard in Pembrokeshire isn't easy for you to get to. I love being there and the courses are such fun - but there are others at different times of the year and different venues - also perhaps a different approach might suit you.
So for those courses, there's Relax and Write - short courses ( covering a weekend) with again lots of fun - and lots of learning!
MARCH 2015
For Relax and Write I run a different sort of event - a Writing Retreat. I just started this approach for the first time last year and it was so popular I've been asked to run another one soon. I was happy to say yes as I enjoyed the first retreat experience I had. So here's the first one - possibly the first of two for this year.
Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction — a Retreat with Kate Walker
Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction is a guided writing retreat for people who have been on a course before or who need to do exactly as it says on the tin – Focus on their writing. Where you’ll have time and space away from the real world to write and reflect on your novel. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with me to discuss the novel, work through problems, brainstorm new ideas, and get it ready for submission. There will be some relaxed group sessions designed to make you think deeply about your writing, and during the weekend there will be scheduled for one-to-one time where you can ask all the questions that have been bothering you. This retreat is designed for people who have already started work on a novel and who want time to focus on that - and not have to worry about anything else.
On a Focus retreat, all rooms booked are single rooms which gives you comfort and privacy and the time to yourself, with all food provided. To get away from family and home chores – to concentrate on writing – and have professional advice/input/discussion. Meeting like-minded people who love writing/popular fiction/romantic novels is always something my students say they value. So there will be plenty of opportunity to do that.
Places on this retreat are strictly limited – and many are already booked up – so if you’d like a place or further information contact:
Email: Lois Bird-Maddox, ‘Relax & Write’ Course Organiser
Website: http://www.malagaworkshops.co.uk/
Also on this weekend:
In June there's a new course in a new venue. I haven't actually been to this venue, but it looks lovely and I can't wait to enjoy a weekend there.
Beginning, Middle and End — Planning your Novel
Beginning Middle and End – How to plan your novel for success.
Was your New Year resolution to ‘write that novel’? Did you start out hopefully, wanting to write the story that was burning in your head. . . only to find that now you’ve slowed down, lost the plot, lost your way, become bogged down in a ‘sagging middle’ Could you do with a route map – some guidelines to help you find your way?
This course will teach you how to plan out your novel so that you have a much better idea of where you’re going and how to create the best read possible. It will show you how to:
Getting into Print - for all Writers. Working Towards Success as a Freelance Writer with Stephen Wade (http://www.stephen-wade.com/)

PS And don't forget that if you can't make it to any of my courses so I can meet you in person - there is always Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance which is on sale on Kindle for just $4.38 - or £2,86

Starting my day well.
An unexpected little thrill - I just discovered this.
I thought that after the flurry of interest in the new revised edition of the 12 Point Guide, things had died down a bit - but today, when sending the details to new students who had asked for them - I found this. Made my day!

Interesting Q&A
Life has been a bit hectic and I've had my head down focusing on the revisions for the latest book - all quite straightforward, it's just that things keep happening that have interrupted my work time.
Anyway, this focus has meant that I foolishly forgot to mention that there is a great books site (interviews, reviews etc) for romance and Women's Fiction - called Bookish Jottings, This is run by Julie who used to review my books on the now sadly defunct Cata Romance site.
Bookish Jottings is Julie's own venture and she asked if I would do a Q&A with her when Indebted to Moreno came out. I did - and then promptly got buried in stuff and forgot to let everyone know about it.
But today I've remembered again - and I'm posting about the interview before I forget.
You can find the Bookish Jottings Q&A here
And if you're interested in Julie's reviews - she reviewed Indebted To Moreno here and she's also read the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance and has reviewed that here
Thank you for the lovely rreviews, Julie - sorry I was so late letting everyone know about them!! The Trouble with this writing job is that sometimes one has to focus on writing!!

The joy of dedications . . .
I came home to a lovely reminder of one of the special joys of being an author. Publishing a book gives me the happy moment of sharing the publication day with a dedication to people I care a lot about. (Or, sadly, sometimes people I used to care a lot about, but thankfully there are few of them.) Today a lovely card let me know how pleased the special friends to whom Indebted to Moreno is dedicated made me smile with happiness at the thought that I have such fabulous friends in my life and that they are happy to discover that I shared the book with them. Regular readers will see that several of the dedications have resulted from the many happy times I've spent at Writers' Holiday - and I hope to share many more.
The 'Mal' half of Malison is also the major support behind the self-pubbed paperback new edition of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance. Luckily, both these friends know I love cats - as do they - so the card (see to the side) made me smile for other reasons

Workshops and Retreats
I've been busy writing - head down, focus on the keyboard. What's that they say about BICHOK?
Bum In Chair, Hands on Keyboard. The only way to get from 'Chapter One' to The End.
But at the same time I've been thinking about and planning the Writing Retreat with Relax and Write I'm running in a couple of weeks time. So looking forward to meeting the students - some I've met
before - some who are brand new to me. All are at different stages on their journey towards being published writers but there's one ting they must already all have in abundance - and that's commitment and determination. You don't sign up for a weekend course and pay the fees(admittedly very reasonable) if you're not committed.
When people ask why I teach - specially when I tell them that when I was much younger, the last thing I wanted to do was to be a teacher - I think of the number of past students , either of my courses or from the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance who are now published writers of romantic fiction. Not just with Harlequin but with other publishers too. A wonderful result from
working with them is sharing their joy in their success and seeing their books on the shelves - just as good as seeing my own.
I was reminded of this twice in the past month. First of all, when I was at the AMBA lunch in London on the 19th. At the lunch I was seated next to Amanda Cinelli, the winner of the So You Think You Can Write whose first book Resisting the Sicilian Playboy is just published. She made my day by telling me that she had the 12 Point Guide in both print and ebook form and that she credited it with helping her a long way on her personal journey to publication. Good luck with that first book and your new career Amanda!
But talking to Amanda, and some news I had from an ex-student this week, reminded me of an important point - and that's why I called the 12 Point Guide a 'Workbook'. There's plenty of advice and information in the text - but there are also the writing exercises at the end of each chapter. Writing exercises that are meant to make you - guess what - write.
I've met so many people who will start writing when they have a moment, when the kids are at school/university/in bed. . .when they have a new kitchen table (to write on) . .. The problem is that the only way to write a book that's publishable is to - write it.
And then - this is the voice of an author with 60+ books published - to rewrite it and maybe rewrite it again. The trouble with the books on Amazon or the bookshop shelves is that all the blood sweat and tears that went into writing them doesn't show in the text or the cover.
And this is what I was reminded of today when I got some good news from another ex-student.
Rachael Thomas was a regular at my Fishguard Writers and Artists' Weekend courses - first with the basic Writing Romance course and then with the Advanced Writing Romance course there in February each year. Each year I felt her writing was getting closer and close to publication standard and then for the last but one So You Think You Can Write contest she was in the top ten. That book A Deal Before the Altar was published last year - and several more since.
Today, the good news was that her latest (sort of) book has been accepted. No title as yet but I knew this book as Destiny's story. Destiny is the name of the heroine.
I'm particularly pleased about this book as I first read it - well, the origins of the current book - as her submission to the Fishguard course back in 2012 - and then again in 2013. It didn't work the first time Or the second time. But there was the seed of such a good story in there that I gave Rachael the advice I give everyone with a story that is a 'not quite' :
Put it away for a while till you can look at it with clearer eyes and see how it needs to be rewritten. Looking at it with fresh eyes - and, in this case, with more experience of writing novels that work - can shine a spotlight on a 'not quite' and turn it into a success.
Which is exactly what she did and today I got an email with the great news that this book - with Sheikh Zafir and Destiny the heroine with the wonderful name - will be published next year. It's fabulous news - and it reinforces my belief that if you really want to be published you need talent, obviously, luck, perhaps - but you definitely need hard work.
Write, revise, submit - revise . . . . and repeat . . .
Congratulations Rachael! I'm so looking forward to seeing Zafir and Destiny's story in print. It's the perfect proof that no teacher, however brilliant, can guarantee you success in your writing, even if you follow (or try to) every word she says!
But, as I've always said, the one way you can guarantee you'll never be successful is to give up. Stop trying. Stop writing.
So those of you who are entering the So You Think You Can Write Contest this year - or who are just writing and trying - or those who will be coming on the Retreat or any other course I'm running in the coming year - the only way is to keep on trying.
If you get a rejection, the only way is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.
Because the real truth is that still applies even after 63 published titles. The only way to get 64 completed is BICHOK - submit - revise . . . and again. And again . . .
Good Luck!
Which reminds me - I need to do some more BICHOKing - so I'm off back to the keyboard.
PS If you want to know any more about my courses with Writers' Holiday or Relax and Write then check out their websites - or look at the Events page on my website. (Though I know I need to update that!)

Writing Courses coming up
I've had a few enquiries about courses coming up so I thought I'd just bring things up to date. The start of September with the New Term and Back to School promotions in the shops always makes me think of going back to school/college/university and so I think about courses - taking them or teaching them - and planning at this time of year.
So my plans for the next six month or so are these:
If you're wondering what makes the difference between a Writing Retreat and a Writing Course - the answer is in the title - it's to help you focus on your own writing.
So my plans for the next six month or so are these:
Today I'll talk about the courses with Relax and Write
9 - 11 October at The Hayes Conference Centre Swanwick Derbyshire - all inclusive fee £245
'Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction' - a Retreat with Kate Walker. This course has a limited number of places, so if you have not booked, please hurry. Retreats are popular with those writing a novel. They can receive feedback during the year, as Retreats are twice yearly, they will help you progress chapter by chapter!
'Write About your Uncle Joe' with Stephen Wade (Author of Uncle Albert etc) links you to not only writing short stories about the past, but putting into words the Family anecdotes that are more personal to each of us, whether for your memoirs or for fiction..
All the weekend courses are informal and fun and structured to help us paint word pictures and express your emotions in words. Encouraged by published authors with experience of writing many books and how to get your writing published. Come and join us and enjoy a weekend with other writers and write 'all hours.'
If you're wondering what makes the difference between a Writing Retreat and a Writing Course - the answer is in the title - it's to help you focus on your own writing.
Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction is a guided writing retreat for people who have been on a course before or who need to do exactly as it says on the tin – Focus on their writing. On this course you will:
· Have time and space away from the real world to write and reflect on your novel.
· You’ll also have the opportunity to work with your tutor to discuss the novel, work through problems, brainstorm new ideas, and get it ready for submission.
· There will be some relaxed group sessions designed to make you think deeply about your writing.
· There will be scheduled for one-to-one time where you can ask all the questions that have been bothering you.
· You will concentrate on writing – and have professional advice/input/discussion.
. This retreat is designed for people who have already started work on a novel and who want time to focus on that - and not have to worry about anything else. It’s an ideal course to get your writing moving ahead. There are a limited number of places on this Retreat, so it is essential you book early, in order to send Kate your work in advance for comment and arrange a one-to-one.
Unexpectedly, I have a place on the latest retreat coming up - 9th -11th October. If you're interested - contact Lois at Relax and Write as soon as possible.
The next course coming up will be in April 2016. This will be held:
Check out the Relax And Write web site for more details of these and all their other courses.
Tomorrow I'll post the details of the courses/weekends with the fabulous Writers' Holiday in case a visit to Wales would appeal to you.
Of course, if you can't make it to any of my upcoming courses - there is always my guide to writing romance - and workbook - 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance.
I was thrilled to see (courtesy of Nas Dean - thanks Nas!) that the new paperback edition was on sale at the Romance Writers of New Zealand conference last week. (It's also on Kindle)
Unexpectedly, I have a place on the latest retreat coming up - 9th -11th October. If you're interested - contact Lois at Relax and Write as soon as possible.
The next course coming up will be in April 2016. This will be held:
15 - 17 April 2016 at The Royal Agricultural University Cirencester.
The fee £245 includes Sunday Lunch.
This weekend course will introduce you to writing that novel you have always wanted to see in print! How to plan a basic synopsis and first chapters. Build your Characters and describe your scenes. A very popular Course Leader and a very popular course.
'Writing the Past' with Stephen Wade.
You can write about a character or a place; an experience of your own or an event in history. Write about a family anecdote or a personality that has influenced your past. Short story or memoir, this course suits all levels and is fun and informal. Plenty of exercises and notes.
Keep an eye on the Relax and Write advertisements in 'Writing Magazine - Writers' News' and in 'Writers' Forum or Facebook - we have about ten to twelve weekends planned every year. A chance to write away from home and work interruptions. A chance to meet other writers and compare notes. 'Relax & Write' all in fee - single accommodation for comfort and privacy. So you think you can write.
I mentioned the new So You Think You Can Write contest
yesterday. This is up and running now -
but this time it’s running through
Wattpad
All the details you need are on the Wattpad site here:
All the details you need are on the Wattpad site here:
There's a Facebook page here and lots more information on the SYTYCW site here
The grand prize is a two book contract with Harlequin. So what are you waiting for - get writing - and posting!
Several people have asked if I have any courses that might help you learn about writing romance - well, yes I do, but the problem is that the Complete Romance Writing course is on next week in Fishguard and Writers' Holiday at Fishguard is already full. Sorry!
I do have another course coming up -with Relax and Write - but that's actually a Writing Retreat - it's at a 3 in 1 event in Swanwick in Derbyshire. Here are the details:
9 - 11 October at The Hayes Conference Centre Swanwick Derbyshire - all inclusive fee £245 -
On this weekend we are organising three different courses. 'Writing for Children' with Anita Loughrey - such a specialist genre - come and join us and find out about how to write for different age groups. How to illustrate your story for the very young. How to inspire the older children to read.
'Write About your Uncle Joe' with Stephen Wade links you to not only writing short stories about the past, but putting into words the Family anecdotes that are more personal to each of us, whether for your memoirs or for fiction.
This Retreat is almost booked up and you will have to submit some chapters and a synopsis to work on - but if you're interested contact Relax and Write for details.
After that, the next course is Advanced Romance Writing back in Fishguard in February 2016 - that's just about booked up too, with, I think just two places left.
So that's taking me into 2016. After that, there will be more Relax and Write events - like the course at Royal Agricultural College Cirencester. .. April 15th - 17th
And another retreat (details to follow)
Which brings us right round to . . . Writers' Holiday Fishguard 2016! They will be accepting day visitors so that might help.
Details of all Writers' Holiday events can be found on their web site here.
Which reminds me - I need to update my own web site with the new events that are planned. (Note to self - when I get back from Writers' Holiday at Fishguard)
I know so many of you can't get to any opf the courses but there is always the Kindle edition of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance and the new paperback editions which is available on Amazon UK and USA etc - Barnes and Noble or here

Preparing for Fishguard
It’s been one of those weeks. Well, it’s that time of year
for a start. We’re coming up to the week in the summer where I – and the Babe
Magnet – head south and west and cross the border in to Wales. It’s time for
the wonderful, special time that is Writers’ Holiday. The one that used to be at Caerleon but is now held at
Fishguard right on the Welsh Coast.
So everything was going fine until, as well as hair and
doctor appointments, there was a sudden
dental emergency which resulted in a struggle to the death with a tooth that
didn’t want to be extracted. It was got
rid of in the end, thank heaven as it
seems it’s been poisoning me for an age
but it was not a pleasant struggle and
something I didn’t need as an extra!
So I’m doubly looking forward to Fishguard and meeting up
with old friends and making new ones. The
Babe Magnet and I always have such a wonderful time and Anne and Gerry who run
Writers’ Holidays make sure that everyone is
happy and enjoying themselves.
All they can control is the weather but if it’s even half as lovely as it was last
year, I’ll be happy.
I’ll be happy anyway – I always am. Writers’ Holiday has
that effect- relaxation, conversation, good food, good friends and some fantastic course. I’m hoping to do
one of the other courses myself, when my teaching is finished.
Fishguard is full for this year but as the smaller venue is filling up
rapidly since the move, plans have been made to admit day visitors, people who
are able to travel each day, or maybe holidaying nearby and want to taste a
course. Details can be found on the Writers’ Holiday web site here.
So, I’m going back to planning and packing - but I’ll hope to write another post very
soon to give you the details of this year’s So You Think You Can Write - and other courses I have coming up very soon.
And everyone who's coming to Fishguard - I'm so looking forward to seeing you.

Catching up and Finding Books
Well - that was a busy time! I just checked out my last post on my blog and find that it was on April 13th!
Really? I can't think where the time went - Well I can - sort of . .
Concentrating on revisions for the latest book - why are editors always right? Well,my current one is, anyway and she pointed out some important things that needed 'tweaking' so I had to get on with those as we have a tight turnaround deadline on this one. This wasn't helped by the fact that the Babe Magnet generously shared his horrible cold/cough with me !
Also had a tight turnaround for me personally as I wanted the revisions done before the Babe Magnet and I went away for a short break. We were staying in one of our favourite places in the whole world - the beautiful city of York. I made the revisions deadline with moments to spare - sending them off just in time to throw some things in a case and set off. The couple of days in York were just glorious and we had a wonderful time. Afternoon tea in Bettys was a special treat too.
Since I was away, the Mills & Boon web site still reads 'Sold Out' for April's release Olivero's Outrageous Proposal, which is amazing! I've had some enquiries about ways to find it seeing as the M&B site doesn't have it available so - checking things through today, I see that Amazon.co.uk has just got a new batch in so are copies there. And of course there's always kindle. The Book Depository still has copies - and they have copies of another book I've been asked about - the new edition of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance. The great thing about Book Depository of course is the fact that they also offer free delivery worldwide
So. that's where you can find Olivero. I have to say that I've also been thrilled to see the fabulous reviews this book has been getting. My hunt on the M&B site led me to this lovely review by Desere Steenberg - it made my day so much to read it! I just wanted to thank all the lovely people who've posted reviews letting me know that they've enjoyed this book. My only worry is that as Desere says that this is' the number one Kate Walker book' - I'm going to have to work hard to match it with my next novel! (Fingers tightly crossed that my sexy sheikh and his marriage of convenience also hits the right spot!)
So now I'm catching up - sorting out the absolute tip my workroom has become as I focused on Nabil and Aziza's story, planning the courses coming up -
Next one is Beginning, Middle End - Planning Your Novel. That's in June Details on the Events page
And of course in July there's the fabulous Writers' Holiday in Fishguard when I'm teaching The Complete Contemporary Romance Writing Course.
Then I have some time helping the Babe Magnet with publicity for his book Uncle Albert - that will involve more travel . . .
And of course I'm planning out the next book!
But I shall be blogging again soon about another book that readers have found to hard to find - that's Wife For Real from The Alcolar Family collection. Watch this space for more details when everything is sorted out.,

Another craft post
So - special thanks go to Nas Dean who has found me places to chat with readers and fellow writers.
Again, to mark the publication of the new paperback edition of the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance - here is another craft post on the Revising and Editing Site
This time I'm talking about training yourself as a plotter - a different sort of answer to those 'where do you get your ideas from' sort of questions. Here's how I get - and work through - some of my ideas.
Ideas are all around you if you just look.
Oh - and there's a giveaway of Olivero's Outrageous Proposal as well.

Coming up for air
I've been so busy with revisions for the latest book with my sexy sheikh and his arranged marriage, that I'd almost forgotten that the publication date for my April book - Olivero's Outrageous Proposal is this coming week. ( In fact I think it's actually out already in some places and in the Presents edition in America.)
So when I lifted my thoughts from the and went to look, I was thrilled to find that it has been getting some lovely reviews as well as being in the Top Ten on the Mills & Boon web site since the 1st week of March.
It's also lovely to see some great reviews - not just because they give it 5 stars but because it shows that readers are enjoying Dario and Alyse's story - always the best thing for a writer to read!
On the Mills & Boon web site there's this one:
Mrs Walker's renaissance continues with this fast-paced, evocative and emotional story with scintillating characters especially the brooding and mixed-up Dario. With great tension and dialogue this is exactly what this reader wants in an M&B Modern. Ten out of ten
R
And on Amazon.com
Marriage of convenience? Those are stories that I really like.
This one started as a game to thwart one man and ended up bringing the main leads into a tangled chaos of titles and pedigrees as if there was no difference between looking for a wife and looking for a horse for your farm.
Olivero suggests (or rather commands very subtly) that they get married and Alysse who has to do something to resolve the issue of getting the family debt paid sees no way round it.
A story where a relationship is as much pretense as it is real and the emotions just run out of control. Wanting something with all your heart but are not able to even voice them.
Awesomely portrayed Kate, I simply loved it.!
Hina Tabassum
And another -
OLIVERO’S OUTRAGEOUS PROPOSAL by author Kate Walker is an April 2015 release by Harlequin Presents.
Alyse Gregory wanted to get away from one persistent suitor so she planned on being seen with another man. But meeting Dario Olivero put the plan put of her mind as she was scorched by desire so hot that there was nothing else on her mind.
Yet was Dario also hit by desire or had she played in his hands? Then he proposed marriage to her as a way of getting out of her problems, would she accept it? Now that she knew why he came after her in the first place?
What would happen to their super-charged chemistry? Would they give in to their passion? But Dario doesn’t do family, what would he do when Alyse drops the bombshell on him?
OLIVERO’S OUTRAGEOUS PROPOSAL is a sizzling romance. Author Kate Walker once again brought a tale of romance shimmering with emotions and sensuality. A reader would stay hooked to the book till the very last page.
Highly recommended for all readers of romance.

More courses for 2015
So I've talked about the courses I run for Writers' Holidays - but perhaps Fishguard in Pembrokeshire isn't easy for you to get to.
- Date: 13 - 15 March 2015
- Course & Venue: A Retreat at Weetwood Hall Leeds.
- Cost: £240 all in
Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction is a guided writing retreat for people who have been on a course before or who need to do exactly as it says on the tin – Focus on their writing.
- 'Write the Past' with Stephen Wade
- 'Write a Mini-Memoir in a Weekend' with Alison Chisholm
- 'How to Self-Publish Your Writing' with Malcolm Chisholm
JUNE 2015
In June there's a new course in a new venue. I haven't actually been to this venue, but it looks lovely and I can't wait to enjoy a weekend there.
The course in June will be :
- Date: 19 - 21 June 2015
- Location: Royal Agricultural University Cirencester
- Website: http://www.rau.ac.uk/conferences-events
- Cost : only £240
Beginning Middle and End – How to plan your novel for success.
- Start well
- Use opening hooks
- Use a synopsis to keep yourself - and your characters - on track
- Avoid the ‘sagging middle’
- Maintain pace to keep the reader turning pages
- Create a satisfying end – making the reader want more from you

There will also be another course one weekend in October 2015 - details to be finalized. At the moment, the suggestion is that I run another retreat at the beautiful Gladstone's Library near Chester.
As soon as I have the full details I'll let you know. I'm so looking forward to these great weekends - I get a lot out of them and I've made so many friends among my students. I always come home buzzing and looking forward to writing myself. It's also been wonderful to see so many of my students go on to be published authors. The latest of course was Rachael Thomas who has her 2nd book Claimed By The Sheikh coming in February.
PS And don't forget that if you can't make it to any of my courses so I can meet you in person - there is always Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance which is on sale on Kindle for just $4.38 - or £2,86

Introducing Rachael Thomas
I'm back from London - where I had a wonderful time. It's always great to meet up with fellow authors, talk face to face, and get to know the new authors, the ones with sparkling brand new books and that wonderful glow of excitement that comes with having achieved their dreams.
There were a lot of new signings at AMBA this time - I'm afraid I might forget some of the names if I try to list them all - but I do remember- because she was sitting directly opposite me - Andie Brock who won second place in last years So You Think You Can Write and whose book is coming out in January.
There was one other new author I just couldn't forget because her special day was rather special for me too. This was because Friday was the day I got to introduce Rachael Thomas, one of my former students, to everyone at AMBA as she joined us for her first lunch as a published author. She even got to see her book on the shelves in the shops in London.
Regular visitors to my blog will remember how, at Fishguard for the Advanced Romance Writing course last year, I presented Rachael with her name on a book - in the shape of a cake, iced to look like a HMB romance title. I knew it had always been her dream to see her name on a real book - so I was almost as thrilled as she was when her So You Think You CanWrite 2013 entry made it into the ten ten selected submissions. It didn't get into the top three - but that didn't hold Rachael back - and after working on revisions for her SYTYCW submission, she finally had the call.
But I'll let Rachael tell you her story- welcome Rachael-

From Stalker to Author
To be here, on Kate Walker’s blog is so exciting, not just
because my debut Presents will be out in October, but because my writing
journey began with a very special book.
Eight years ago, Liz Fielding gave a talk at my local
writing group and she had with her a book which rekindled my desire to write,
not just anything, but romances for Harlequin Mills and Boon.
You guessed it. That book was the fabulous 12 Point Guide toWriting Romance, by Kate Walker. I read it from cover to cover trying to
discover all I needed to learn and in doing so, found out that Kate was doing a
weekend course run by Writers’ Holiday at Fishguard, which was only a short
drive from my home and even better, just six weeks later. So I immediately booked.
The weekend was fantastic. It went far too fast, but I took in all I’d learnt
and left having booked for the next year. I continued to attend each year,
until I became known as one of Kate’s stalkers.
I submitted to Harlequin Mills and Boon and also joined the
New Writers’ Scheme run by the Romantic Novelists’ Association. My aim each
time I submitted a manuscript was to get a step closer to my ultimate goal of
publication. I wrote and wrote, until my apprenticeship, which is how I’ve always
thought of it, consisted of eight complete manuscripts and four false starts. In
April last year I had yet another rejection from Harlequin Mills and Boon. At
this point I really did wonder if ‘it’ was ever going to happen for me, so
focused on writing the story I really wanted to write and not the story
I thought was wanted.
I had entered competitions like New Voices and So You ThinkYou Can Write in previous years, without any success. Then a friend encouraged
me to enter So You Think You Can Write last September and from that point
everything went a little crazy. I was amazed when my entry made the Top 50,
which meant I could put my full manuscript on an editor’s desk. Just to have
got that far, was more than I’d hoped for, but I was totally stunned when I
learnt I’d made the Top 10.
I didn't make the Top 3, but I did get some really useful
feedback from the editors and spent last Christmas revising my story before
submitting it again in January. When I did get ‘the call’ I’d dreamed of for
years it was totally unexpected and I tried to remain calm and composed, but
inside I was jumping for joy.
My competition entry was given a sparkling new title of A Deal Before The Altar and will be out
in October.
I still have to pinch myself and I don’t think I really will
believe it until I see my book on the shelves. I
have had an amazing time over
the last eight years, attending courses and conferences, but most of all,
making some wonderful friends.
If I was to give one bit of advice to aspiring writers, it would
be to write and keep writing, but most of all to enjoy it. As for stalking Kate
at Fishguard – guess where I’ll be next February!
I'm so happy to be able to share in Rachael's celebrations - and to see her name on a book in reality - not the cake one - we ate that!
If there's one thing about Rachael's story that really matters, it's the way that she never gave up and never stopped working towards her dream. There's that saying that success is getting up one more time than you've been knocked down - and I think that's really true of Rachael's determination and focus. So if you're trying to write or planning to enter this year's So You Think You Can Write contest - hand on in there and keep trying. And good luck!
PS Rachael was the 14th student from one of my courses to have her book published - I'm now hoping for #15 - perhaps someone out there will be the one!

This and that . . .
Today is the 12th April so it's the date for my regular post over on the Tote Bags 'N' Blogs blog site.
Today I'm talking about a job I thought I never wanted to do - and that now I find I'm doing - and actually enjoying . And no, it's not writing romance! But it is connected with the republication of the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance.
Which reminds me - the special introductory price for this book has been a great success - but it's now coming to an end. If you want to get the book for the amazing price of £0.77 or $0.99, you need to act now!
Oh yes - and there's a great review of the 12 Point Guide over on the Pink Heart Society blog today., My thanks go to Michelle Styles for the great write up - I have to admit that I love the idea of the book being
'classic text on writing series romance'!
