Book Beginnings + The Friday 56: The Queen's Rivals by Brandy Purdy

Book Beginning hosted by Rose City Reader is where I share the first sentence (or so) of the book I am currently reading, along with my initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

What a splendid study in contradictions I am! Inside as well as out.

My initial thought is..huh?

For a time, our lady-mother had been keen on devising punishments to fit the crime--when Jane turned her nose at eating a certain dish, our lady-mother would insist that she be served no other fare, and for each meal have that same exact plate set before her even after what was upon it had grown quite putrid.

Their ambitions were ordinary, but they were born too close to the throne...

As cousins of history's most tempestuous queens, Ladies Jane, Katherine, and Mary Grey were born in an age when all of London lived beneath the Tower's menacing shadow. Tyrannized by Bloody Mary and the Virgin Queen, the sisters feared love was unthinkable —and the scaffold all but unavoidable...

Raised to fear her royal blood and what it might lead men to do in her name, Mary Grey dreads what will become of herself and her elder sisters under the reigns of Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. On their honor, they have no designs on the crown, yet are condemned to solitude, forbidden to wed. Though Mary, accustomed to dwelling in the shadows, the subject of whispers, may never catch the eye of a gentleman, her beautiful and brilliant sisters long for freedoms that would surely cost their lives. And so, wizened for her years, Mary can only hope for divine providence amid a bleak present and a future at the whim of the throne — unless destiny gains the upper hand.

This can’t be happening to her. A random break down…an isolated mountain road, a seemingly chance meeting with a hotter-than-hot stranger. Tatyana is a modern gal who can handle any crisis, but before she knows what’s hit her, she’s sensing a hideous threat, not to her but to this man who draws her like a moth to flame. Hunter.

“I know things…I saw it.”

When the attack comes, she is his protection from a diabolical enemy, even as he initiates her into a startling world of magic, sorcery and sensuality. For in a moment of terrifying danger a spark has been struck, and neither can escape the erotic fire to come…

John Russo's brilliantly chilling screenplay for the 1968 groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead helped pave the wave for the flesh-eating spectacles that have thrilled zombie fans for three generations. Here, for the first time in one volume, are two of the master's most gruesome and demented novels of gut-wrenching mayhem. . .

Midnight

First, they captured small animals. Then, they moved on to bigger prey. Now the backwoods family that slays together stays together for one last midnight snack: a pair of unsuspecting travelers whose ritual torture and sacrifice will only intensify the demonic clan's cravings. . .for more.

Yeah, they're dead. . .they're all messed up.

Escape From The Living Dead

In an isolated roadside diner, a desperate group of strangers barricade themselves against a ravenous horde of undead customers who crave something more than the early bird special. They want flesh. Human flesh. With a side order of brains and stomach-turning terror.

How did I end up in a career where I always have blood on my hands? Well, let me tell you a story about an assassin who thought she could do no wrong. . . .

Ten years ago. A blistering hot August night. I remember like it was yesterday. The night I, Gin Blanco, truly became the Spider. Killing people is what I do best, especially now that I’ve honed my Ice and Stone magic. But back then, I had yet to learn one very important rule: arrogance will get you, every single time.

This particular job seemed simple: murder a crooked building contractor with ties to ruthless Fire elemental Mab Monroe. My mentor, Fletcher Lane, had some misgivings, but I was certain that I had the situation under control . . . right up until I exposed my weaknesses to a merciless opponent who exploited every single one of them. There’s a reason assassins aren’t supposed to feel anything. Luckily, a knife to the heart can fix that problem, especially when I’m the one wielding it. . . .

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple--she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.
Étienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years--long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher. . .

The Friday 56 + Book Beginnings: Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson

I have been looking for an interesting Friday meme to do on the blog. I like sharing more about what I am currently reading and stumbled across Book Beginnings. I also use to post Friday 56 and instead of choosing between the two I thought I would just post them together like some other bloggers do.

Book Beginning hosted by Rose City Reader is where I share the first sentence (or so) of the book I am currently reading, along with my initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

Darkness. Silence. The weight of solitude. Each was a weapon meant to break her, to drive her into humiliation out of defiant self-possession; to goad her into surrender, into pleas for mercy, for compassion, for understanding.

MY THOUGHTS
The opening sentence above pulls me in. It is dark and ominous.

"Can't they see I am king in all but name? Kings need money."

ABOUT THE BOOK

With her king a captive and her coffers drained, England is left in turmoil during the Crusades. After the death of her father in the Holy Land, Lady Marian of Ravenskeep finds herself alone--and at the mercy of men vying for her lands and her beauty. Thrust into games of political intrigue, the sheltered knight's daughter soon learns to trust no one...

Afforded a hero's homecoming, Sir Robert of Locksley returns from the Crusades a shattered man. In a country he barely recognizes, one torn apart by treachery and betrayal, he finds in Marian a kindred soul. Their quest for justice will take them into the depths of Sherwood Forest, where the dream of a new England will be born...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Since 1984, Jennifer Roberson has published 20 solo novels, among them thirteen best selling fantasy novels: the 8-volume "Chronicles of the Cheysuli", about a race of shapechangers and a divine prophecy; and the 4-volume "Sword-Dancer" saga the author describes as "Conan the Barbarian Meets Gloria Steinem." Other novels include three mainstream historicals from Kensington: LADY OF THE FOREST, an award winning reinterpretation of the Robin Hood story emphasizing Marian's role in a story of how the legend came to be; a sequel, LADY OF SHERWOOD, continuing the adventures of Robin and Marian; and LADY OF THE GLEN, the documented story of 17th-century Scotland's Massacre of Glencoe, similar in theme to the films "Rob Roy" and "Braveheart". She has also written THE GOLDEN KEY, a DAW Books fantasy collaboration with Melanie Rawn and Kate Elliott, which was nominated for the World Fantasy Award in 1997.

Jennifer has a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Northern Arizona University, with an extended major in British history. She spent her final semester in England at the University of London, which enabled her to do in depth research at museums, great homes, and cathedrals of England, as well as, Scotland's Edinburgh, Loch Ness, and Glencoe. Prior to becoming a full-time writer in 1985, Jennifer was employed as an investigative reporter for a morning daily, and as an advertising copywriter for a major marketing company. Jennifer Roberson grew up in Arizona and used to compete in amateur rodeos. Her primary hobby now is the breeding, training, and exhibition of Cardigan Welsh Corgis and Labrador Retrievers in the conformation, obedience, and agility rings of AKC dog shows and trials, she was the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed columnist for the AKC GAZETTE for six years, and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America.
