The Adventures of Superman by K Henderson

The Adventures of Superman , 24 x 48, oil on linen

Superman's first appearance was in Action Comics #1. Superman became popular very quickly. By 1940 the amount of merchandise available increased dramatically, with jigsaw puzzles, paper dolls, bubble gum and trading cards available, as well as wooden or metal figures.

This 1940 game by Milton Bradley  is the first and rarest of the early Superman board games, which was also offered as a premium in the Superman Bubble Gum Club prize folder. The box shows Superman stopping an oncoming airplane.

Tom Corbett, Space Cadet was another creation  born from the worlds fascination with Space in the 1950's. Tom Corbett — Space Cadet stories  were depicted in television, radio, books, comic books, comic strips, and other media. Tom Corbett first appeared on television in October of 1950. The stories followed the adventures of Corbett and other cadets at the Space Academy as they train to become members of the Solar Guard.

This paint set box showing Corbetts's ship, Polaris, was manufactured in 1953 by Peerless Playthings.

Boomer or Bust by K. Henderson

Boom or Bust,  36 x 36, oil on linen

I love the graphics an colors of this game. Parker Brothers manufactured this financial game in 1951

Players move around the board according to the throw of the Dice. Properties such as beauty Shop, Department store, etc are bought and sold at prices that rise and fall quite unexpectedly, depending on whether the conditions are NORMAL, BOOM times or BUST (Depression times) The game is quick- moving and amusing. The game ends when all but one player becomes bankrupt.

Detective World

Detective World, 24 x 18, oil on linen

If you follow my artwork, you know that I collect Stuff to use as subjects for my paintings. I love 'Hardboiled' Detective pulp fiction and magazines. I love the men of action, femme fatales and witty dialogue. And the covers could be quite titillating. As I was planning a painting featuring a 1940's Detective Magazine I remembered the days when Risque publications were sent in Plain Brown Wrappers (are they still sent that way?) Ah! A new painting series is born.

This is the first in my Plain Brown Wrappers series. This Detective World from 1947 peeks out of the torn brown paper tied up in string.

The Merry Puppet

The Merry Puppet, 20 x 40, oil on linen

The Adventures of Pinocchio written by Carlo Collodi 1883 is one of the creepiest children's stories I've ever read. I love it!

The mild Walt Disney movie animation was released in theaters in 1940.  It was initially a box office disaster.

In 1939 Milton Bradley created this board game based on Disney's motion picture. The box top depicts images of Pinocchio and his protector Jiminy Cricket.

The Case of the Drowning Duck

The Case of the Drowning Duck, 24 x 18, oil on linen

The Case of the Drowning Duck was written by Erle Stanley Gardner in 1942. I love the title of the book. It's about "a chemist who drowns ducks and becomes a murder suspect.".
The Book Cover Woman looks like she's trying to claw he way out of her Plain Brown Wrapper.

Space-O by K Henderson

Space - O, oil on linen, 30 x 24

Here's another painting of a Vintage 'School Crayon' box.  The boy and girl are in a Flying Saucer against a red background. These space age artists have done a great job coloring inside the lines (mostly)

Grand Adventure

Grand Adventure, 36 x 36, oil on linen

This painting composition created itself. I have been wanting to use some of my vintage suitcases in a painting for quite some time but couldn't get excited about any of the ideas I was coming up with.

I had these three cases stacked on a table and one morning I just happen to glance at them while the sun was coming up and shining through the window. The sun created the perfect light and dark contrast, the background looked to be a dark sienna. I grabbed my camera and quickly took several reference photos.

A Perfect Mason by K Henderson

A Perfect Mason, 30" x 30", oil on canvas
I've painted several small Coca Cola paintings this year and decided to create a larger Coke painting. My vintage Coke Bottle is joined by an Atlas Mason and a Ball Perfect Mason jar.

Yikes! This painting was a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be. The raised letters on each of the bottles required shadows and highlights on each of them.

The patina on the Zinc lid  added a contrast to the colorful shiny glass.

Double Sealed

Double Sealed, 24 x 12, oil on cradled board

This is from my series "Toys in a Box" . I was interested in this composition because of the contrasts in the painting: the light and the dark, the shiny metallic seal and the flat surface of the wooden seal. One seal in confined in the box and the other is free with the floating ball.

The Case of the Sulky Girl

The Case of the Sulky Girl, 24 x 18, oil on linen

The Case of the Sulky Girl is  Erle Stanley Gardner's second Perry Mason novel. It was written in 1933.

I loved painting the packing tape on this painting. And if you look close on the painting you will see that all the Plain Brown Wrapper packages are addressed to fictitious detectives. This one is address to Miles Archer, Sam Spade's partner. (Sorry, you can't see it is this detail)

Red Globe II - K. Henderson Still Life

Red Globe II, oil on linen, 30 x 30

Stripes and silver and red: My favorites! I've been working on this painting, off and on, for a while now and I'm pleased with the results.

The still life had a brass goblet which you don't see. The gold reflections still remain in the bowl adding additional color and design.

Flight of the Bumble Bee, 12 x 12. oil on cradled board

Yes, I know these are Honey Bees and not Bumble Bees but I like the title. And it fits in my my current Flight Themed paintings.
