Popeye Model Sheets

I received the Popeye Volume 3 DVD as a gift and have been enjoying it immensely. I wasn't as familiar with the wartime era shorts so some of the cartoons are new to me. I forgot that I have model sheets that I haven't gotten around to posting. These were sent to me by the Masked Stinker so let's all give him a big thanks for sending them. THANKS! Update: Also, many thanks to Bob Jaques for sending me a much higher quality version of the model sheet below. The copy I had was a tease, you couldn't really make out the details on these great poses.

Popeye - "Goonland"

I'm really looking forward to the next Popeye set that's coming out soon. Can't wait to see this and so many other great cartoons restored. Bob Jaques posted some screencaps to compare the TV prints with the new restored cartoons. I you haven't already, check out Bob's blog for all things Popeye. Here's a crappy print to hold us over until the set comes out.

*Update*- I forgot to post this model sheet that the Masked Stinker sent me. Thanks for the reminder Stinker.

Popeye Model Sheets

I finally got the Popeye DVDs the other day, my wife gave it to me for our anniversary. Ain't she great. So now it's time to post some model sheets of Popeye and the gang. I have to thank The Masked Stinker for hooking me up with some model sheets that I didn't have and also much better copies of the ones I already had. Thanks Stinker! Here's the main players for now and I'll post some more real soon. These were drawn by animators Doc Crandall and Willard Bowsky. Read more about Doc Crandall in Ray Pointer's comments in this GAC forum thread.

Mr. Bug Goes To Town

Anyone else out there enjoy Fleischer's second feature "Mr. Bug Goes To Town"? I really love this film and I'm not that into animated features. It grows on me the more I watch it. The musical score is fantastic and the animation is great throughout. The backgrounds are also something to behold. If you've seen the opening sequence you know what I mean. Hopefully this movie will get a proper release on DVD someday. Here's a short clip from the film. I posted some model sheets from it awhile back too.

Popeye - "The Paneless Window Washer"

Here's a clip from the 1937 Popeye short "The Paneless Window Washer". I'm sure most people who read this blog have seen this one as it's on a lot of the cheap public domain DVDs. I had to post it just for the part when Bluto temporarily dispenses with Popeye and turns to Olive and says "Now you want me to clean your windas? Huh!?!" and then proceeds to choke the shit out of her. What a businessman. Hilarious.

Popeye - "Blunder Below"

I'm going to break up the Famous Studios backgrounds posts as it's taking me forever to organize all the frame grabs. I'll post some more of them in a day or two, hopefully you'll find them of interest. Anyway, I haven't really posted much of anything Popeye related so I figure I'll start with one of my favorite Popeye shorts, "Blunder Below" which was animated/directed by Dave Tendlar and released in 1942. Also, here's a really great model sheet from the same year. I'm don't know who drew it but those are some great poses.

Fleischer Features

I was watching Mr. Bug Goes To Town the other day and loving how beautifully animated it was, so I figured I'd post some model sheets from both Fleischer movies. Though not the greatest of movies there's plenty of great animation to enjoy in both Mr. Bug and Gulliver's Travels, except the rotoscoping. I hate that crap, and Gabby too. The Gulliver models are particularly nice with all those notes on them, they help a moron like me draw them better.

Betty Boop

I was cleaning up my hard drive and came across these two Betty Boop model sheets so I figured I'd share them. I think I found these originally on the Drawing Board's Model Sheets thread some time ago. Fleischer's Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons are some of the best and most entertaining cartoons ever. If haven't already, check out the link on the sidebar to the Fleischer Popeye Tribute page. It's a great site. I've also uploaded Betty Boop and Grampy in A Song A Day. I love Grampy, he's always up for a song, and finding new ways to play music.
