Tweet of the Day

MK Amir Ohana (Likud) tweeted a montage of messages he received in support of him after his visit to Deri in which he was verbally attacked by Deri supporters

baseless hatred

Nothing about today's reaction to the Supreme Court's decision was unexpected or surprising (though how the government moves forward remains to be seen). Except one thing.

Politicians and rabbis, and supporters did an aliyah l'regel of sorts to pay visits to Deri after the announcement and express support for him. The important people got in, the supporters had to hang out on the street.

What struck me as weird is that when MK Amir Ohana (Likud) came to express his support, the crowds of Shas supporters booed him and called out degrading insults to him.

This is surprising. Ohana did nothing to Deri or Shas except support them fully. He was booed because of his personal lifestyle as a homosexual.

So he is good enough to be sitting together in a government, he is good enough to hold a senior position, he is good enough for Deri and others to work with on a regular basis very closely, he is good enough to run the Knesset and speak form the podium, he is good enough for Shas to vote for him for the position of Speaker of the Knesset...he is good for everything except for showing up at Deri's house as a show of support? This is really baseless hatred.

Quote of the Day

It would be better for me to fail 100 times with undeserved love of other Jews than even one time of undeservedly hating other Jews

-- Speaker of the Knesset Amir Ohana, after being attacked by various rabbis and Haredi leaders for his personal LGTBQ lifestyle

Responsibility without blame

I assume Minister of Internal Security Amir Ohana's words form after the Meron tragedy apply equally today.

Back then he said "I am responsible [for the tragedy] but responsibility does not mean blame." He said that to deflect calls for his resignation in light of the permits given by police, or at least allowing the event to go on, despite failures in compliance with safety codes.

The rioting in many cities, but especially in Lod where it might have been the worst, with shuls being destroyed and torched, private residences and businesses and cars being attacked, vandalized, people being attacked, stones thrown, people lynched, with the police mostly staying away and not putting down the uprising should really lead to the resignation of at least the minister in charge - being Minister Amir Ohana.

But I assume he would say now what he said then - sure, I am responsible, but that does not mean I am to blame.
