Interesting Psak: not burying the cars
I dont know if this is a clarification of the original psak that was referenced a few days ago about burying the cars destroyed in the October 7 massacre due to the presence of human remains that were too difficult or if it is a change of policy and approach. With the initial announcement no details were really publicized, so it is unclear.
Either way, Kipa is reporting that Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau has published a letter in which he lays out what should be done with these cars. Rav Lau paskens that burial of car parts is only to be used as a last resort. After sending a special team to analyze the cars and figure out how to handle them, there is a difference between upholstery that absorbed blood and metal/aluminum body of the car that did not absorb blood but has remains on it. A special team should be recruited to gather any remaining remains and efforts should be made to not require burial of metal car parts.
metal surfaces should be scraped of human remains and then once clean the metal should be sent to the scrapyard. The metal can be recycled and used for other purposes.

Interesting Psak: Identification on Shabbos
Kikar is reporting that chief Rabbi Dovid Lau has issued a psak that staff of the IDF Rabbinate should continue their efforts on Shabbos to identify the bodies of those heinously and horrifically murdered by Hamas this past Shabbos and Sunday.
Rav Lau said it is important and pikuach nefesh to identify the bodies. Positive identification will also allow them to understand who was and who was not taken captive by Hamas and therefore the work must continue.

Interesting Psak: Shabbos at War
In light of the ongoing war with Hamas and the threat of danger and incoming rockets at any time, the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rabbi Dovid Lau and Rabbi Yitzcha Yosef, have issued a psak to the general public regarding what is needed to do over shabbos at this time.
They paskened that:
1. All instructions and guidelines from the Home Front Command must be strictly observed. If they say to stay home, stay home and dont go out, even for prayer services
2. Daven only in a shul that has, or has nearby, a protected area. Elderly and those who are unwell and walk too slowly, should daven at home and not go to shul
3. Whoever holds a license to carry a gun has a mitzva to carry the gun with him on Shabbos
4. If a siren is heard during the shmoneh esrei tefilla, go quietly to the protected area and then continue davening from where you left off
5. Try to have at least one armed person in every shul
6. Every shul should have a phone, placed there on Friday, to be available for use. When necessary one can keep his phone on silent and vibrate in his pocket
4. Leave the radio on tuned to the silent station to be updated by Home Front Command should it be necessary
Hatzlacha and hopefully it wont be necessary and will just be a precaution

Interesting Psak: musical selichot
Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau issued a psak regarding the phenomenon of bring musical instruments and livening up the selichot.
Rav Lau was asked if it is allowed to conduct the selichot services accompanied by musical instruments.
According to Kikar, Rav Lau referred to the historical basis for banning musical selichot. Rav Lau said it is a fairly new phenomenon nd preferably people should continue the tradition of the nusach that was accepted for many generations, but if someone feels the musical accompaniment adds to their inspiration and meaningful prayer, then it should not be prevented.
The original reason why musical accompaniment was banned was to reject the Reform who brought musical instruments into the services having copied the style form the Churches. There were some places and some circumstances where it was allowed, such as during the week rather than on Shabbos and holidays, or at Kabbalat Shabbat, if davened early enough.
Rav Lau says that because today it is already common to have selichot services with guitars and violins, it cant be said that it is taken from the goyim. An organ would still be prohibited because of chukas hagoyim, but guitars and other such instruments would be ok.

Interesting Psak: Saving Lives
Chief Rabni Rav Dovid Lau today issued a psak for the delegations that went to Turkey, or Turkiye, to help with the rescue efforts.
Srugim is reporting that Rav Lau issued a psak for the delegations that their efforts should continue in the same manner on Shabbos - they should continue their efforts to save lives and provide relief and search for survivors and to provide medical care.
With the engineering corps it is especially interesting, as Rav Lau said as long as there is a chance of survivors, efforts to find and rescue people form the rubble should continue. This isnt a new question and has been debated in other tragedies around the world - at what point do they decide there can be no more survivors? For now it is still too early for that, but if we approach another Shabbos, that question might become relevant. Let's hope the question will never come up and everyone will be rescued before that happens.

Interesting Psak: do NOT pray for rain
A couple weeks back the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Ravvi Dovid Lau, paskened that the special prayer for rain should be added to our prayers considering the dry winter. The Eida Hachareidis also called on people to add the prayer for rain to their supplications.
Rabbi Lau is now calling on the people with the psak to NOT daven for rain at this point.
This should not be confused with praying for the rain to stop - he did not say that. The rain can continue naturally without our intervention via prayer.
Rabbi Lau issued a psak today saying the prayer for rain is no longer needed, consider the past week of good rains making up for a lot of the shortfall. The prayers for this are no longer needed.

Interesting Psak: Cultured Meat
Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau has been investigating the manufacture and processing of cultured "meats" and has now issued an official psak about its halachic status.
Rav Lau has paskened that cultured meat is pareve but. "Pareve but" meaning, it is pareve, but....
Stressing that this only applies to the type of cultured meat he investigated and others that use other methods might be different, Rabbi Lau paskened this type of cultured meat is pareve, with some conditions and qualifications largely about the maris ayin aspect of it:
1. as long as there is supervision that the cells were taken from the embryo and all other parts and ingredients used in the process are supervised, this will be kosher and pareve
2. if it will be marketed as meat or as a meaty product, and if it is made to look like meat and taste and smell like meat, there would be room to be strict and consider it kosher but not pareve as far as eating/cooking it with milk
3. it should not be advertised alongside dairy products as doing so might cause people to be lax about milk and meat.

sovereignty on Har Habayit without presence
on the day of the yahrtzeit of Rav Kook, who himself was strongly opposed to Jews ascending Har Habayit, Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau spoke out against those who got o Har Habayit today.
Rav Lau said, "We need to be careful and bot bring ourselves into questions and concerns of karess. There are other ways for us to show sovereignty. We must safeguard the holiness of the place."
Not to discount his opinion on going to Har Habayit - this has been the mainstream opinion for decades until recently, and even today it might still be mainstream - but what does he mean there are other ways to show sovereignty over Har Habayit? What are those ways and are we doing anything else to show sovereignty? Is the Rabbanut, which is opposed to Jews on Har Habayit even as a form of showing sovereignty, pushing other forms of showing sovereignty? I want to know what he meant.

Quote of the Day
We respect the citizens of the State, citizenship is important and the State can decide who is deserving of that. But "Jewish" is something else. There could be a citizen that is not a Jew. We do not get involved in laws, but the moment when the laws are coming to establish halacha, it is incumbent upon the Rabbanut to say it stops here.
-- Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau
the laws cannot determine halacha? Such as the law that only the Rabbanut can say something is kosher? Such as the law that only the Rabbanut can perform a kosher conversion? etc
