Har Nof to become Naot Yosef
Moshe Le-On, Mayor of Jerusalem, announced that he is going to be changing the name of the Har Nof neighborhood to Naot Yosef, as a tribute to Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rav Ovadia Yosef, both leading rabbonim, gedolim, from Jerusalem.
Some residents love this change, and some residents are upset by it. I don't really care. I don't own stock in either name.

Torato Umanuto: the life story of Rav Elyashiv st"l (video)
this was a recent documentary report on Israel's channel 1. The report is led by a relative of his, and many relatives are spoken to in the video. This is a very interesting report and approaches with different angles than what you are used to seeing about him.

Rav Elyashiv argues and performed the goral hagra
While neither Rav Shteinman nor Rav Chaim Kanievsky were willing to perform the Goral Hagra due to not being blessed with ruach hakodesh, the goral hagra has still been performed - just not by them.
Rav Binyamin Elyashiv, son of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l, admits that after being pressured by relatives of one of the abducted boys and by other gedolim he performed the goral hagra this past Monday. Rav Binyamin Elyashiv is also the grandson of Rav Aryeh Levin, who had also performed the goral hagra.
The result of the goral performed by Rav Elyashiv was a passuk regarding Shimshon that indicates the hostages are alive and in the area of Hebron, with positive and optimistic overtures.
When asked about Rav Kanievsky's and Rav Shteinman's comments about why not to perform the goral, Rav Elyashiv responded that his father had said ruach hakodesh is not needed for it - if one had ruach hakodesh, he wouldn't need to perform the goral at all!
source: Bechadrei and Kikar (with audio)
If any of you need a gorah hagra done, you now know where to go for it....

Murder in Mea Shearim!
Rav Elyashiv's untimely passing has led to all sorts of infighting in the leadership of the haredi community, that even spawned a new newspaper as an attempt to wrest control of the haredi "street".
There are now allegations that Rav Elyashiv was actually murdered. Why someone would have murdered him I am not sure, but seeing the chaos his death has caused, I can only imagine what the motives were.
By now you are definitely wondering if I have gone crazy. Very possibly that [my going crazy] happened a long time ago, but this murder allegation was actually just alleged yesterday.
According to Bechadrei, Rav Birnzweig, a rav in the Mirrer Yeshiva, claimed during his mussar shiur, that Rav Elyashiv was murdered. He said:

Recently we have heard of gedolei yisroel who have passed from this world, everybody must arouse themselves [to teshuva]. Rav Elyashiv and the Admor of Shomrei Emunim were murdered due to the yeshiva bochurim and kollel avreichim who use smartphones.I thought Jewish moms were the experts at guilt trips. That's a pretty wild claim. It almost sounds like they were fighting over an iPhone in the school yard and it led to murder... "murder" isnt even "died for the generations sins" - it is much worse. I wonder if someone is going to call the police to report the murder...

Is Rav Elyashiv Dead or Alive? (video)
oops.. MK Yisroel Eichler (UTJ) slipped at the Knesset podium. While talking about how evil the people are who are trying to draft the haredim, Eichler makes mention of Rav Elyashiv and says "at the funeral of Rav Elyashiv, shlita".. Shlita is used for living people, not the dead.. an honest mistake, but still made me crack a smile..

2 Cases Of Adding Years To Rav Elyashiv's Life
I was just reminded of the following incident that happened less than 6 months ago.
An avreich, worried about the failing health of Rav Elyashiv, donated a year of his life to Rav Elyashiv. He also hoped that others would join suit and Rav Elyashiv would live to close to 1000 years due to the donations. And then everybody would donate another year to the next rav to get sick. etc etc etc
The fellow donated a year, but Rav Elyashiv only continued to live another 5+ months. Not a very effective donation. He lost a year of his own but only 5 months were gained.
I was reminded of this because of the Bechadrei report on the nichum aveilim visit by Minister Silvan Shalom to the Elyashiv house.
When Shalom walked into the house, one of the sons of Rav Elyashiv introduced him as the person who extended Rav Elyashiv's life by 9 years. He went on to explain that in 2004 Rav Elyashiv had been very ill and a specialist needed to be flown in from the USA, along with obtaining and clearing certain special medical equipment that could not be obtained privately for technical reasons. Silvan Shalom, in his capacity at the time as Foreign Minister, had been approached, and quickly made all the arrangements and was able to get whatever was necessary for the treatment.
When Rav Elyashiv recuperated from his illness, he sent a message to Silvan Shalom that he'd like to see him. When Shalom came down to Hanan St. for the visit, Rav Elyashiv thanked him profusely for having helped.
Silvan Shalom brought in a doctor and medical equipment and added 9 years to Rav Elyashiv's life, while the avreich donated a year and only got 5 months out of it... Which was more effective?

Rav Elyashiv's Empty Legacy
Anshel Pfeffer of Haaretz has written a nasty article about Rav Elyashiv, written practically before the body was even cold.
According to Pfeffer, Rav Elyashiv's legacy was an "empty one" and it seems that the only thing Rav Elyashiv was good for was encouraging high birth-rates, freezing progress in time and keeping members of the community from leading productive lives.
Pfeffer is judging Rav Elyashiv by the wrong barometer. Pfeffer seems to have had unrealistic expectations of Rav Elyashiv as a leader. It seems that Pfeffer expected Rav Elyashiv to lead the haredi community according to standards and expectations set by Pfeffer himself along with those of the general community.
According to Pfeffer, because Rav Elyashiv did not move the haredi community to be more in line with the general public, he was a failure, his was an empty legacy.
The problem is that the haredi community does not want to find a way to move in line with the general public. The haredi community does not choose it's leaders, whether they be political leaders or spiritual leaders, by their promises or stated abilities to lead the community towards modernization. That is neither a goal of the haredi community nor is it something the haredi community is interested in. The haredi community wants to stay separate, and its leaders operate under a different set of guidelines and priorities than do the secular or more modern religious communities.
One can argue and debate the ideas and philosophies, one can even criticize decisions made. However, the only way one can call Rav Elyashiv's legacy to be an "empty legacy" is by not having any understanding at all of the haredi community, and by looking at it from the wrong perspective. The haredi community does not consider Rav Elyashiv's legacy to be an empty one - far from it.

Images From Rav Elyashiv's Funeral
I went to the levaya of Rav Elyashiv last night. There was a very large crowd there, but ti seemed strange to me. It did not feel like a funeral. I've been to large funerals before - Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach's funeral supposedly had in the range of 600,000 people while the news is reporting between 250,000 and 300,000 at Rav Elyashiv's.. - so it was not the size. For some reason, all over, people were chatting, laughing, and having a good time, myself included, while waiting for the main part of the procession to approach. It seemed more like a large social gathering than a funeral.
Here are some images I snapped with my cellphone at the funeral..

Baruch Dayan HaEmes: Rav Elyashiv
I don't normally do death announcements (unless I had a personal relationship with the niftar, and even then..), but Rav Elyashiv wasn't just anybody.
A short while ago Rav Elyashiv passed away. Baruch Dayan HaEmes.
As of right now, from what I hear, the levaya is scheduled for 10 PM tonight beginning in Mea Shearim near his home/shul...

Petition For The Yated Against The Gedolim
I have not really been paying close attention to the details of the hostile takeover of the Yated Neeman (Israeli edition) or the fighting that has been going on over there. It is one irrelevant (to me) group fighting with another irrelevant group (to me) about control of an irrelevant (to me) newspaper.
I did find this tidbit interesting. The following release went out over the PR Newswire:
Petition Against New York ultra-Orthodox Billionaire Shimon Glick - Thousands of Yeshiva Students in Israel & the US Sign Petition Calling on Glick to Withdraw Intention to Take over 'Yated Ne'eman'
TEL-AVIV, Israel, June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --A petition is currently being circulated in the ultra-Orthodox street calling on New York ultra-Orthodox billionaire Shimon Glick to withdraw from his attempt to take over the 'Yated Ne'eman' newspaper by removing the Rabbi Eliashiv trustees from positions of influence in the newspaper. Tens of thousands of Yeshiva students in Israel and in the US have already signed the petition and many thousands more are expected to sign in the next few days. Sources close to 'Yated Ne'eman' stated that this is a dangerous attempt to hurt the Lithuanian stream of the 'Degel HaTorah' Party and weaken the power of this significant body by disconnecting it from the glorious rabbinical legacy of Rabbi Shach, and therefore it must be uprooted. It was also reported that the moves taken by Glick harm Rabbi Shach's enterprise and threatens rabbis and intellectuals closely associated with "Yated Ne'eman" and its supporters.Rav Shach is long gone, Rav Shach appointed Rav Shteinman as a successor (supposedly) and according to the profile I read in the Mishpacha last week, Shimon Glick was a close talmid of Rav Shach. So, while I have no idea who is playing in who's court, the petition sounds kind of silly. I am sure people are more worried about their jobs than about this or that legacy.
I guess this fight means that one need not listen to Rav Chaim Kanievsky (who wrote a letter in this week's Yated supporting Rav Shteinman saying that Rav Elyashiv is sick and Rav Shteinman has taken over leadership of the generation) or Rav Shteinman or the various other rabbonim involved. I'll remember that when they start quoting those names about what they want me to do. Selective daas torah...

Gafni Can Be Sued By Disengagement Victims Because He Deceived Rav Elyashiv
2 months ago it was announced that a few evictees from Gush Katif, from the Disengagement, had filed suit in beis din against MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ) for his having accepted the bribe of 290 million NIS for his political party in exchange for their vote and support of the Disengagement.
At the time I thought it was strange, no matter how wrong Gafni was for his role in the matter, that any one person, besides for the prime minister, should be held responsible for a decision made by the entire government. As well, it also did not sound like much of a case because Gafni could easily show that other parties paid off for their support were far more crucial to the vote than UTJ was. Gafni as well thought the case had no merit and tried to have it dismissed by claiming he only follows the orders of the gedolim, so any case should be brought against Rav Elyashiv and others.
According to this report on Kikar, the case has been heard in the beis din of Rav Levin and this week they have reached the stage of summarizing the claims. One of the claims, the one the case seems to be based on, is that Gafni lied and deceived Rav Elyashiv by presenting to him inaccurate information. This information was attested to by Rav Simcha HaKohein Kook, the chief rabbi of Rehovot, who testified that Rav Elyashiv himself had said he had been led astray by Gafni on the issue. Therefore, they claim, because we have testimony that Gafni lied to rav Elyashiv to get him to order them to vote in favor, Gafni cannot rely on "listenign to the gedolim" to protect him.
The beis din decided that there is enough basis to allow them to sue MK Gafni, and that Gafni cannot hide behind the claim of the gedolim told him what to do. Gafni's demand to go to beis din in Bnei Braq was rejected, and they must use a "zabla" beis din (ad hoc group of arbitrators chosen in agreement by both parties).
There are some other interesting points discussed in the beis dins protocols of the hearing:
This case has turned into a bombshell. There is no way to get around the fact that the askanim are lying to the gedolim to influence how the gedolim give their instructions.

The Sons Of Rav Elyashiv, The Kotel Classrooms
The rav of the Kotel (and other holy sites), Rav Shmuel Rabinovitch, has designed a plan to build a large complex in the Kotel plaza. The building will be 5 stories high, reaching to an equal height with the Kotel, and will house offices, conference rooms, classrooms for presentations and groups and rooms to host events. The plans have been under works for a long time and have already been approved.
Adding to the list of those opposing the complex, a list that already includes local residents and the Waqf due to their claims that this changes the face of the Kotel area, is Rav Elyashiv's family and other rabbonim.
In a letter signed by Rav Kanievsky, the sons of Rav Elyashiv, and the Gaavad of the Eida among others, the rabbonim have declared that these plans must be opposed and anybody who can protest it and prevent it from happening must do so. They express concern that the structure will cause an increase in activity that will harm the holiness of the place, and they question how this could have been planned without first asking the gedolei yisroel. They want a rabbinic committee established that will analyze any plan to make changes in the area so they can determine if it will harm the holiness of the place or not.
Rav Rabinovitch responds that the structure is meant to be a solution for the needs of the many visitors to the place, especially those thousands of groups that come from all over the country and need such classrooms. He says that unfortunately people with agendas have been spreading information that has no connection to reality and are attempting to harm the administration of the Kotel area... (source: Mynet)
I don't see how this will work, as on crowded days the Kotel plaza is so busy and often full that grabbing a lot of that space for a building that they probably wont let anybody into without arranging months in advance for hefty fees seems impossible.
As a curiosity, have the "children of Rav Elyashiv" already inherited his place on the list of gedolim that now they are signing on pashkevilim instead of him? I am sure they are respectable and honorable rabbonim, but just because they are his children do they automatically become the next leaders? I know nothing about them and have nothing for or against them - it just seems interesting that "the sons of Rav Elyashiv" signed on such a pashkevil.

If You Wont Donate A Year To Rav Elyashiv, At least Donate 2 Minutes
If you thought the fellow who donated a year of his life to Rav Elyashiv was off his rocker and that such a thing would be limited to the individual kook, sure enough, it is now becoming a public request that other people do similar.
Bechadrei is reporting that in the advertising poster that went up today in shuls around haredi neighborhoods, "Mevasser V'Omer", (I will try to find the poster later and confirm it - the content on this poster is usually pretty interesting) a yerushalmi avreich placed an notice calling on all bnei torah to each donate 2 minutes of his life to Rav Elyashiv. This donation should be verbalized during mincha today, according to the initiator.
He says we learn from Rav Elyashiv himself who paskens that a person who sees a car stuck on the side of the road must pull over to help, even if it will cause him to miss mincha. And he says the women learn from Ricvka Imeinu that she offered water to the camels - how much more so we must each take notice and have gratitude for the dedication with which Rav Elyashiv has devoted his life to Klal Yisrael. And we learn from the Chafetz Chaim who donated 2 minutes of his life for the Rosh Yeshiva of Radin... He then calls on everyone to donate at mincha today, and one who cannot do it today should do it as soon as possible.
Assuming everyone reading the sign will be davening mincha, I am not sure why someone cannot do it today but will be able to do it tomorrow. Is there a long procedure for this that someone might not have the time on any given day? The only person i can think of who might not have time is the guy who pulled over near the end of the day to help someone stuck on the side of the road, and is missing mincha because of it!
The truth is that just because one person posted a notice does not mean everyone is going to do this. However, no longer is it enough to watch individuals do things like this, but now those individuals call upon others to join the trend. Soon there will be peer pressure and competitions of how much a person donated. The one benefit of all this is that Rav Elyashiv might end up living longer than Methuselah.

Interesting Psak: Adding A Name To Rav Elyashiv
People add names to those who are gravelly ill. Doing so is thought to ward of the Angel of Death by changing the person - a person's mazel is somehow connected to his name. By changing the person's name, you are in effect creating a new person with a different mazel than the person he was previously.
Kikar is reporting that due to the gravity of Rav Elyashiv's illness, and his continually deteriorating situation, Rav Kanievsky was asked about the possibility of adding a name to Rav Elyashiv's name.
Rav Kanievsky paskened that they should not add the name. Doing so turns the person somehow into a new person upon whom the illness was not decreed. However, with someone like Rav Elyashiv, all his merits are because of his name - if they would change his name and turn him into a new person with a new mazel, doing so might cancel out all his merits he has accumulated over his lifetime.
Rav Kanievsky add that this is the psak Rav Elyashiv himself gave many years ago when Rav Moshe Feinstein was ill and they were considering adding a name.
The ramifications of this are astounding. If it really creates a new person to the point that he would lose all his previous merits, would he still get rewarded for his good deeds after passing if his name had been changed? What about the other way - can someone who was not so good change his name in order to start over with a clean slate or to avoid punishment in the afterworld? Could a person change his name every time he does something wrong - it would make repentance so much easier! (civilly I think one can only change his name every 7 years)

The Life of Rav Elyashiv (video)
Avishai Ben-Chaim of Channel 10 ran a special report on Rav Elyashiv on last night's news to describe what Rav Elyashiv means to the public.
The report shows images of Rav Elyashiv in different settings; learning, answering questions, riding through the small alleyways near his house in his golf cart and giving blessings. The question asked at about 2 minutes in is an interesting question - unfortunately they didn't show him answering it.

Donating A Year of Life To Rav Elyashiv
If you thought fasting for a day for the health of Rav Elyashiv was a bit too much, get a load of this...
According to Kikar, an avreich from Jerusalem was so distraught at the possibility of losing Rav Elyashiv, in a time when many great rabbis and rosh yeshivas have recently died and a number of others are currently not well, that he decided to donate a year of his life to Rav Elyashiv.
He came up with the idea, and went to ask the gedolei hador. They told him he should discuss it with his family - his wife and kids. he says they agreed right away.
He says the rabbonim encouraged him and directed him to accept it upon himself without any special ceremony, but just via personal prayer, which he says he did last Shabbos.
After he did, during leining the person sitting next to him noticed him smiling. he asked him why the big smile. After the fellow explained what he had just done, the hassidic guy asked if he would do the same for the Satmar Rebbe - donate a year to his life? The fellow responded that yes, and he would give a year of his life for each of the gedolim.
I wonder if this will become a trend now. I wonder if 50 people donate a year each, will he be able to live a healthy life until 150? Is there some limitation on how this works? Does it mean he will have a good and healthy life for the coming year? What about the donor - when he dies a year early (though obviously nobody knows when he is supposed to die, so nobody knows when it is early or not), will he able to be saved and his life extended by prayer? This raises so many questions.
The source for such a thing, that I am aware of, is when it worked, according to the Medrash, with Adam donating 70 years of his life so David could be born and become king of Israel.

Rav Benny Lau Upsets Many With Comments About Prayers For Rav Elyashiv
Rav Benny Lau, a rav in Jerusalem and rav of a number of organizations, has set off a firestorm of anger with his comments n Rav Elyashiv's situation.
Rav Lau spoke of the intense prayers being offered for Rav Elyashiv to recover. Rav Lau wrote on his Facebook page:
In the news they are reporting that the treatment Rav Elyashiv underwent has failed, and he is currently on a respirator and is unconscious.
I am reminded of the image of Rav Yehuda HaNasi that fell deathly ill, and outside his mansion the students congregated and were relentless in prayer, in order to prevent the Angel of Death from completing his work. The maidservant of rav Yehuda HaNasi was one of the only people who saw him as a person and not as an image, but as a person who was actually suffering in pain. At first she asked the students to overcome the Angel of Death, but then she changed her prayer and requested that the upper spheres should overcome the lower spheres. She then threw down a ceramic jug, and the shattering noise caused the students to stop praying for a moment. In that moment, sans prayers, Rav Yehuda passed away.
From the prayer of that maidservant we learn the halacha that sometimes it is appropriate to pray to allow the neshama to leave the rebellious body. This is how the Ran concludes in Masechet Nedarim, as Rav Moshe Feinstein explained it in igros Moshe.
We too should daven that Rav Elyashiv, who lived his entire life in modesty and completely dedicated to the goal of keep the Jewish people connected to the Torah, he should find quiet and rest and the physical pains should leave him, soon in our time.
Many are upset, saying that he has no right to say such a thing, to call for prayers for Rav Elyashiv's death.
I see nothing wrong with davening for a recovery (not what Rav Lau suggested), no matter how remote the chances of this are. Not just to continue existing as he is right now, but to recover. Some claims to the contrary disturb me. I have heard, both in conversation and from reading forums and talkbacks, some people say that he should be kept alive and davened for, even if just remaining in his current state. They reason that as long as he is alive he protects us (that made me think of him as "the national mezuza") and while he is suffering he provides a form of kappara for us. People are saying that even if he were to remain in his current situation, we should continue to extend it and daven for it to continue so we can receive our kappara.
To me that sounds absurd. I have no problem with the concept of the death, or suffering, of tzaddikim bringing kappara to the people. Even if I don't understand it, I have no problem accepting it. But to demand, or to daven, that Rav Elyashiv (or anyone else) should be forced to continue to suffer so that we could get a kappara, is just selfish and sick. To daven for him to continue suffering? That is absurd! Daven for a recovery, or don't daven. but to daven for the situation to continue as is for selfish reasons is ridiculous.
Anyway, Rav Benny Lau saw some of the criticism of his statement on various websites and posted a further comment. he quoted more source material on the subject from the gemara, and then brought the explanation of the Ran. he wrote:
Sometimes we must ask for mercy for someone sick that he should die, for example if he is suffering greatly from his sickness and he cannot recover as it says.. ..
From the words of the Ran we understand that there is a reality of a sick person who is going to die, that the doctors have said they have done everything humanly possible to heal and now he is in a state of suffering - for him we daven that he should be redeemed from his body that is trapping his soul. It is everybody's right, and for sure a gadol like Rav Elyashiv, to be released from the physical limitations trapping his soul.

Fast For Rav Elyashiv
Due to Rav Elyashiv's failed health and deteriorating situation, Rav Chaim Kanievsky has requested, according to statements published in the 3 daily Haredi newspapers, that people accept upon themselves to fast tomorrow, Thursday - the last day of the special "Shovavim period", for the health of Rav Elyashiv.
Rav Kanievsky said that the best is for people to accept a full-day fast, but those who cannot should at least fast for half a day. As well, only someone who's regular learning schedule will not be affected should fast. One who will not be able to maintain his regular learning, should not fast.
And to remind you, A TehillimRing was started for יוסף שלום בן חיה מושא

A Visit From The Dead
A story came in to Ladaat.net, after having been told by the "Elyashiv House Spokesman", Shlomo Kook, who also says that many stories have come in to them over the past few days, but this story is especially unique.
The story goes that a woman from Bet Shemesh was visited in her dream on Saturday night by her recently deceased father. In this visit, he asked her what is going on that there are so many prayers coming up to heaven from the world. He said that it seems the heavens are filled with prayers.
She responded to her father, in her dream, that all those prayers are because of Rav Elyashiv , as the Jewish nation is united in praying for his recovery. He responded to her , "Now all is understood", and then he disappeared.
Make of it what you will or won't, and learn whatever lesson you want from it..
