Oscar Peterson - Live! (1986)

Oscar Peterson - Live! (1986)
jazz | 1cd | eac-flac-cue-log-covers | 280MB
Pablo CD 2310-940  | rel: 1990
Allmusic:
Pianist Oscar Peterson's stint at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles in Nov. 1986 resulted in two CDs' worth of material. Peterson's quartet (with guitarist Joe Pass, bassist David Young and drummer Martin Drew) performs an interesting medley of "Perdido" and "Caravan," plays sensitively on "If You Only Knew," explores the pianist's "City Lights" and performs a three-part "The Bach Suite," which is climaxed by "Bach's Blues." Enjoyable music, it's recommended to Peterson's many fans.

Tracks
1. The Bach Suite: "Allegro" – 9:51
2. The Bach Suite: "Andante" – 3:24
3. The Bach Suite: "Bach's Blues" – 9:11
4. "City Lights" – 7:08
5. Medley: "Perdido" (Juan Tizol, Hans J. Lengsfelder, Ervin Drake) – 6:26
6. Medley: "Caravan" (Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, Tizol) – 6:39
7. "If You Only Knew" – 7:56

Taken from the same live sessions that resulted in The Trio, this CD reissue of a Pablo album features three remarkable virtuosos: pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Highlights include Peterson's "Wheatland," the blues "For Count" (which is referred to in the liner notes as "Miles"), and "The Good Life."

Tracks
. "Wheatland" (Oscar Peterson) – 12:17

Allmusic:
This CD has yet another set of unaccompanied guitar solos by Joe Pass; however, fans of the great guitarist realize that he was among the most consistent of jazz performers, and virtually all of his Pablo recordings are quite worthwhile. For this live date, Pass explores seven standards and a couple of original blues, but manages to find fresh variations to play during such songs as "Wave," "All the Things You Are," and an exploratory rendition of "Honeysuckle Rose."

Tracks
1. "Wave" (Antonio Carlos Jobim) – 5:52
2. "Blues in "G"" (Joe Pass) – 7:05
3. "All the Things You Are" (Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern) – 5:43
4. "'Round Midnight" (Thelonious Monk, Cootie Williams) – 6:26
5. "Here's That Rainy Day" (Johnny Burke, Jimmy Van Heusen) – 4:48
6. "Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Lady Melange" (Duke Ellington) – 6:37
7. "Blues Dues" (Pass) – 5:31
8. "Bluesette" (Norman Gimbel, Toots Thielemans) – 3:43
9. "Honeysuckle Rose" (Fats Waller, Andy Razaf) – 5:50

Personnel
* Joe Pass – guitar

Count Basie - Kansas City 5 (1977)
jazz | 1cd | eac-flac-cue-log-cover | 270MB

Allmusic:
This studio session from 1977 features Count Basie in a quintet with vibraphonist Milt Jackson and guitarist Joe Pass. The predictably excellent group performs spirited versions of some of Basie's "hits" (including "Jive at Five" and "One O'Clock Jump"), some blues and a few standards. It is always interesting to hear Basie in a hornless setting like this one where he gets opportunities to stretch out on the piano.

Tracks
-01. "Jive at Five" (Count Basie, Harry "Sweets" Edison) – 5:30
-02. "One O'Clock Jump" (Basie) – 3:53
-03. "(We Ain't Got) No Special Thing" (Basie, Milt Jackson, Joe Pass) – 5:33
-04. "Memories of You" (Eubie Blake, Andy Razaf) – 3:49
-05. "Frog's Blues" (Basie, Jackson, Pass) – 4:55
-06. "Rabbit" (Basie, Jackson, Pass) – 3:46
-07. "Perdido" (Ervin Drake, Hans J. Lengsfelder, Juan Tizol) – 4:27
-08. "Timekeeper" (Basie, Jackson, Pass) – 5:12
-09. "Mean to Me" (Fred E. Ahlert, Roy Turk) – 5:00

Allmusic:
The title of this LP certainly fits the players. Pianist Oscar Peterson (who switches to organ on two of the eight selections), guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Ray Brown would each be on literally dozens of recordings for Norman Granz's Pablo label; all are worth acquiring by fans of straightahead jazz. This particular set has three Peterson originals (including one called "Jobim"), a few veteran standards and Quincy Jones's "Eyes of Love."

-4. "Blues for Dennis" (Peterson) – 5:31
-5. "Sunny" (Oscar Hammerstein II, Otto Harbach, Jerome Kern) – 4:49
