Excuses and Regrets

The great thing about doing a photo shoot for a magazine is that it gives you a perfect excuse to buy flowers...sometimes lots of flowers.

And this time of year, fresh flowers are a perfect pick me up for very little money.

It also makes you take a long hard look at what you "want" to see in an image, which often leads to editing down to the bare essentials...something I'm striving for these days anyway.

This past weekend I bit the bullet and ordered the boots I wanted...the boots that had spoken to me for so long.  It's a rare thing for me to spend a lot of money on clothes or shoes, I'm way too much of a bargain/clearance shopper for that.  I love the thrill of the chase, and am rarely regretful if something slips through my fingers as I stalk the manufacturer waiting for their bottom basement price, but this time they won out.

I love nice things, I just don't love paying a high price for them.  I think this harkens back to the days when I was a sales rep for high end children's clothing and accessories.  I did clothing shows in New York, Charlotte N.C., and the DC metro area, and so I knew the cost of manufacturing verses retail and I was never really able to go back to full retail after that eye opening experience.

But at the same time, I can appreciate the cost of some things...furniture, antiques, jewelry, and apparently boots in the perfect shade of saddle brown!  They were on sale after all, and I justified my purchase by telling myself that I will wear them every day, of every week, of every month...hah!

Just as I rarely regret losing the clearance tug of war from time to time, I have no regrets when I put my money on the table in other instances.  The pie safe pictured above is one such example.  It was purchased when we were young, didn't have 2 nickles to rub together, and I had to pay for it over time.  It has been with us for 25 years now, traveling from home to home, room to room, and I still love it just as much as when I first saw it in a local antique store.

My father used to always say, and my mother too, that if you really want it, you better go ahead and get it or it might not be there later...something a wise reader reminded me of in her comment on my last post.  I guess from time to time we have to splurge a little, on those special things that speak to us and which we can't get out of our heads.  I doubt I will ever lose my cheapskate ways, but I'm betting I also won't regret strutting around in my new boots either!

What do you splurge on?!...do tell!

Dear Fatty Breadkins

First of all I want to thank all of you for your wonderful comments and emails from my last post.  It's nice to know that many of us have a bit of design schizophrenia due to all of the images and beautiful homes that inundate the web these days.  And I'm also glad to know that like me, many of you have decided to go your own way and not feel badly about the things you have and the homes you dwell in.

Ok, so you are probably wondering what the title of this post is all about and I'll be happy to tell you, but be prepared for a long post with lots of pics.  I should have broken it up into two posts, but I'm just too darned lazy to do that today...well most days to be honest!

So a few years ago when my siblings and I were going through and cleaning out my parent's home after my father died, we got to a pair of candelabras that had belonged to my great aunt.  Aunt Frances was a lovely, funny, and always elegant woman who lived in a beautiful neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia.

She had wonderful taste, and visiting her home as a child was like wandering into an old English country estate mixed with a healthy dose of Virginia gentility.  It was sort of intimidating as a child to visit what seemed like a mansion at the time, eat tomato aspic, and play on the supple leather club chairs in the library, but it was also a place where you felt like a grown up and used your best manners.

Though she lived into her 90s, Aunt Frances left a very big hole in our lives when she left.  She was the last surviving member of my maternal grandmother's immediate family and like a grandmother to us since ours had passed away.

When she died, my mother inherited and/or bought at an estate sale many of her things, including the candelabras you see above.  I should have known something when neither of my sisters jumped at the chance to grab these silverplated beauties.  My one sister even flat out said,..."no, I don't want anything silver that I have to polish, living on the water is murder on brass and silver!"

But me, being me, and thinking, oh don't be such a baby, what's a little silver polishing in the grand scheme of things, I took them!  For awhile I was faithful, I would use a polishing cloth often and keep them gleaming, but then our love affair ended.  I would walk past them in my dining room and mutter under my breath, "just look at yourselves, you've let yourself go, and you used to be so shiny and pretty."  That gave way to me thinking, "tarnished silver is all the rage, yes, that's the ticket," but like with all things, you have to face the truth sometime, at it's at times like these that you have to call on Fatty Breadkins.

About 4 years ago now, we visited the Biltmore Estate while on a trip to NC for a family reunion.  Mr. Tide, myself, and our kids decided to take a day trip and go visit the estate since we had never been there before.  I'm not a big lover of Victorian decor, but I did want to take advantage of being that close, so off we went.

We decided to take the self guided audio tour, and while our kids zoomed through and didn't listen to most of it, Mr. Tide and I took our time and thoroughly enjoyed the narration.  As many things as they told us on that tour, the one thing that stuck, was a story about one of Mr. Biltmore's favorite staff members, a woman he supposedly lovingly referred to as Fatty Breadkins.

In the narration, or to the best of my not so good recollection, she was someone who either worked in the kitchen or polished silver.  Either way, in my head she became synonymous with silver polishing.  Yup, Fatty Breadkins has turned into my silver polishing heroine, a woman who loved her job, or at least was said to have found joy in it, and who I dearly wish would show up from time to time at my house to polish silver!

You see, though I may not like Victorian decor that much, I can still appreciate their attention to detail and love of beauty and decoration!  When we left the Biltmore, I looked at Mr. Tide and informed him that with lighter wood choices, and a few changes here and there...I could have lived there back in the day.  He was quick to remind me that I would likely have been Fatty Breadkins, not one of the people changing clothes 8 times a day and traveling, painting, and perfecting my operatic voice or piano skills.  I simply gave him a look that said "I beg to differ."

So what does this have to do with anything?  Well, over the past 2 days I have tapped in to my inner Fatty Breadkins, and I'm happy to say that I think she may just be giving me 2 thumbs up on my efforts.

My hands are sore, I worked like a dog, but oh how shiny those candelabras are and how pretty they look again after a year's worth of salt air, humidity, and utter neglect on my part.  Yes, once again they are gleaming and screaming for a candlelight dinner, anyone want to join me?!

And I even have a few tricks up my sleeve to help them become an epergne, with a few glass candle/vase holders that I've had for years and only used a couple of times.  I've always wanted an epergne, one of those gorgeous hand pierced silver and glass centerpieces that graced many a Victorian table, though they've been around since the 1700s.

Now I just need to find a few more of these glass holders, which aren't so easy to find, so if you know a source, do tell please!  I used to have 4, but can only find 3 of mine, and ideally I would like to have 6 of them, so that I can either use candles, or put flowers in them.

And getting back to what I was saying yesterday, I am making sure that each day I take stock of the beautiful things in my own home and learning to love its flaws.  I haven't shown you my living room and dining room for quite some time, so I thought I would take some pics to share with all of you.

In the past I would have probably shown you a vignette instead of the whole room, because I would have thought that I needed to make it perfect, or I would have wanted to wait until I had replaced this or that...but no more, here it is, air conditioning vents and all.  Do I still want to replace the dark wood tea cart and buffet in there, yup, but not until I find just what I'm looking for, and that could take years people.  I'm one of those people who knows exactly what I want, so asking the universe to help me find it, then afford it, is often the trick.

And here is the living room, with egads...a ceiling fan and the dreaded green couch I want to replace.  But instead of not showing it to you because my perfectly comfy, perfectly usable green couch is still here and not the pale blue confection that lives in my head, I'm letting it all hang out because, I still love this room just as it is.

And I'm betting that a lot of you love your rooms too, you're just afraid someone else will think differently.  Such wasted time worrying what others think, isn't it?

Because let's face it, Fatty Breadkins would have loved my house, my silver, my ceiling fans.  I bet she dreamed of ceiling fans and lights in the ceiling to make her job easier!

And what's not to love when you have one of these in your house...he says, "Mom, have I mentioned that I love these floors, they are SO comfy!"

I hope you find something to love today! :)

Summer Style

It's been a very looong time since I've shown you any changes we've made to our house so I thought today I would show you the new chairs we just bought for the sitting area off of our kitchen.

Truth be told we haven't really made very many changes to the house lately because I've been so busy working and I haven't been concentrating on things like making the house look nice.  But last week my in-laws were coming to town and having company is always a good excuse to spruce up your house!  Because we had given our son and daughter the blue checked chair and wooden rocker that used to occupy this space it was time we found some new chairs.

I knew what I wanted, but I was having trouble finding just the right chairs to go in this spot.  It's located right off of the kitchen and to the left is where our office is located which is open to the whole room.

The door to the back yard really prevents you from putting anything in the middle of the room,  and I knew I didn't want a couch or loveseat because I wanted people to be able to take advantage of the water views, be able to chat with Mr. Tide and me while we are working, and be able to converse with someone while they are busy in the kitchen...so swivel chairs seemed like the perfect solution.

Have you ever looked for pretty swivel chairs?!  Let's just say that the majority of them have those gawd awful bases that you can see below the chairs and they aren't what I would call attractive.  After searching for awhile I settled on a look from Lee Industries who makes beautiful high quality furniture which is still made in the USA.

And after visiting one of my favorite local stores, Traditions of Loveville, which just happens to be a distributor for Lee Industries in my area, I hit pay dirt!   I'm not known for being a big "plan ahead" sort of person, so it was serendipitous that Traditions had not one but two swivel rockers and in colors that matched my color scheme and the vision I had in my head just a few days before my in-laws arrived...score!  One of them was even on sale, so I ended up getting a great deal on these two chairs...thanks Becky!

These babies are not only comfy but they are also slipcovered so you can slide those puppies off and throw them in the washing machine in case another set of pups, ie. Misty Belle and Mr. Quinn bring a bit of their muddy fun inside and onto the furniture.  And if I decide to change the look of the room at some point I can always pick out new slips with different fabrics or colorways.

You may have noticed  Miss Misty in one of the photos above, she is the perfect photographer's assistant...and what you can't see in any of the photos is that Mr. Quinn is right beside her.  I think Misty was a stylist in another life, she's always right there helping me set up the shot.  Quinn must have been a male model in his former life, as he is always ready for his best shot!

After my in-laws left last Sunday I decided to do a little rearranging and I finally brought in an old Coca Cola cooler I had found in the attic at the farm property we own.  I cleaned it up and brought it inside to sit underneath the sofa table made from an old shutter that I've had for years.  That whitish swath you see on the cooler is actually an old hunk of masking tape that I'm sure bore our family's name on it once upon a time.  Growing up crabbing, boating, camping and picnicking meant having your name slapped on everything so that you could claim your stake if something fell overboard or wandered away.  I thought about trying to remove it, but I think it just adds to the piece, so I decided to leave it on.

I also decided to take down the license plates and horse pull and put up one of my images which is printed on metal and has a high gloss finish.  The seagull picture, which I took awhile ago at the beach in Chincoteague, has been sitting in a box for over a year and I just didn't know where I wanted to hang it until now.

Throw in a few summertime accessories like these old croquet balls from a set my parent's once owned, a pair of binoculars to help you see the herons, osprey, and eagles outside, and a few books about the Chesapeake Bay area and you are all set!

So here is the room before, last December complete with a blurry Mr. Quinn, the kitchen table which is now in the dining room, the old furniture, and previous wall decor...

 BEFORE

And after...ready for some summer fun!

AFTER

Hmm, now what other rooms can I rearrange and buy new furniture for... ;-)

I hope everyone is staying cool and if you are getting too much rain, please send some our way, we've been hotter than the hinges and dry as a bone!

Long Overdue

Broken lawnmowers, nails in tires, art appointments, industrial air purifiers, doctor's appointments, and dead computers, want to know what all of these things have in common...well they're all associated with moi!

The last few weeks have been a blur.  You know the kind, where even in your dreams you are behind the eight ball or atop the highest point in the universe with no visible way down...yeah that was last night's fun dream!  The kind of pace where the bullet train goes whizzing past you in a blur, but you're on one of those hand crank railway seesaw car thingies like they always had in the cartoons, pumping your heart out to try and catch up.  Phew, I need a vacation and there's none on the horizon, so the crazy train will have to keep chugging a few more months.

Yesterday, it dawned on me that I never showed you my friend Melissa's beautiful shop photos that I told you I would show you last month.  I made a promise to myself that today would be the day I would get the post done, and then like magic I saw Melissa at Panera last night...you gotta love how the universe works sometimes don't you?!  Like it was saying to me..."remember, you said today, this means you better do that post, you promised...see there she is!"

So below is my LONG overdue post filled with lots of lovely photos from her amazing store.  But before we get to all the pretties, I'm also long overdue in thanking each and every one of you who commented on my last post.  I haven't returned a single email or comment from that post and I feel sick about it.  The fact is that I read them all and each one gave me a greater and greater sense of comfort regarding our empty nest, so thank you!  And thank Mr. Tide for fixing my dead computer so that I could come here to say what should have been said within just a few days of posting...THANKS, you guys rock!

And because I've blathered on enough for one post, I will let the pictures do most of the talking for The Right Mix, Antiques and Fine Art, owned by my dear friend Missy/Melissa Geimer!  Enjoy!

Beautiful antique oil paintings...check!

Gorgeous silver serveware, including antique samovars...yup she has what you need!

Beautiful antique furniture and rugs, including burl wood and a baby grand piano...whatever you need to tickle your fancy!

In need of a little sparkle in your life, or maybe just an Aidan Gray fix...well you've come to the right place...or should I say The Right Mix! ;-)

And did I mention that she also carries accessories for yourself (she even sells antique jewelry), or your home, Missy has you covered, at her shop you'll find giftware too, including cards and napkins.

And because Missy understands that every well dressed home deserves a beautiful setting, she offers an array of beautiful garden accessories to boot.

I think you can see why I love this shop, and why I think the name The Right Mix is perfectly suited to it, it truly is a wonderful mix of must haves!  If you were to take a quick lap around my house right now you'd find one of her armillaries gracing my front flower bed, a beautiful antique blue and white creamer sitting on the tea cart in my dining room, and a gorgeous white German Shepard statue atop the Hepplewhite chest in my living room...not to mention some wonderful paper napkins in the drawer of my buffet waiting for guests, or to use as hostess gifts.  So not only do I love Missy's shop, but I love how her wonderful gifts and antiques have helped me create the right mix in my own home!  And the best part is that she's always finding new treasures so each time you visit her shop you're sure to find something new to bring home!

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of The Right Mix located in Leonardtown, Maryland, and I hope you'll have the opportunity to visit it yourself one day and meet Missy, who is one of the sweetest women on the planet, and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that!

The shop isn't open every day, but you can always contact Missy/Melissa via email at missygeimer@yahoo.com or you can phone her at 480-365-8871 to schedule an appointment, and please tell her Kat says hello!

Thank you Missy for letting me invade your space and take photos of your beautiful shop!
