Saturday Sourdough

Sorry - it's been a long time since posting.  Dad's health is declining and we're looking into hospice options for him out West if it continues.  Not sure what to post as most of my comments lately seem to be "escorts" in India or Mumbai :-)  So I'll go for a simple range recipe - SOURDOUGH PANCAKES

The night before in a large bowl combine:
1 cup sourdough starter (King Arthur has a great starter kit if you don't want to do it DIY style)
1 cup milk
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour. Beat well.

Cover and let stand overnight.  The next morning, sift together and set aside:

1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder

Meanwhile, store into the sourdough sponge

2 large eggs
1/4 cup oil or melted butter (slightly cooled).

Stir in the sifted ingredients and bake on a greased griddle, turning only once.  Makes 16 4 inch pancakes (they freeze well).

  2. Oh damn, now Im hungry for pancakes :) Was kind of worried about you, you were gone for a while. I meant to call but my leftovers from Hepatic-Encephalitis made me keep forgetting.

  3. I figured you were to busy with your new job as the White House press secretary.

    1. I'd have a hard time repeating what I'd been told to say without cracking up. :-)

  4. I wish I had the perfect words to comfort you, but I don't have that skill. Like many people, I prefer silence to the possibility of saying something stupid or insensitive. Just know that I am thinking of you in this time of sad endings and I hope that your father is in as much comfort as possible. My best wishes.

    1. Bob, thanks. He's rallied once before when it got this bad, but he's 101 so. . . He's happy though and at peace.

  5. These look lovely (and make me very hungry indeed)!

I am sorry about your father. We are going through a version of this with both my mother and my father right now - not hospice, but long term memory care. Prayers Up.

  9. Wow, 101 is amazing just by itself. Sorry for the struggles and, like Bob, never quite sure what to say.

Thanks for all the great recipes including this one. I've made so many of your suggestions but unfortunately have to pass on this one. I have about stopped eating carbs except as a special treat on very irregular occasions, so even having sourdough starter around is a bit of a pointless exercise. I feed it, feed it, feed it, but never use it and then eventually I forget to feed it.

Looking forward to more of your writing when the time comes.

  10. My father is still alive in me, 23 years after he checked out; I talk with him every day. Same with my mother, 34 years on. I am never alone. You won't be either.

P.S. Your pancake recipes are out of this world

  11. Hanging with you. My father is 98 and in the same boat. WW II vets are amazing. Blessings be on him.

  12. I have been missing your posts, but I felt your dad’s health maybe failing and taking up your life. I pray all goes well for you and him. No matter the age of our parents it is still, tough to experience their passing. My mother has Alzheimer’s and has not known me and not communicated with us for the past two years. Her brain is now shutting her body down but it is going slowly. And I know when the end comes it will still be tough.
