When the National Guard or the Coast Guard or Police rescue someone who has gotten lost while camping or sailing or doing something crazy (like going hiking in a blizzard), who pays for it?
Do we, taxpayers, have to pay for that? Or do they charge the people who decided to take a chance and risk their lives doing something risky?
And if we, the taxpayers, pay for it does that bother you?

During the time of racial segregation in the U.S. African American students seemed to do better overall than they are doing today.
The schools they attended were sometimes falling down around them, the textbooks they used were often outdated. And yet overall they did better on average than Black students today.
