Matroyshka bunting!

I have been busy making my Russian styled bunting.

First of all I took my matroyshka fabric

I cut out scallop shapes which I then backed with polycotton and trimmed with burgundy ricrac braid (from http://www.daisychaindesigns.co.uk/)

Next I cut out some plum coloured felt (from Paper and String)  into an upside down Russian onion dome style shape.  I layered the scallop shapes on top of the felt onion dome shape and sewed the two together.

Lastly I made binding out of some stash striped fabric matching my colours and attached it to make a string of Russian themed bunting for Christmas.

And there you are  (Вот вам!):

How easy was that - don't know why it took me so long to get on with it.

I also have some Christmas nutcracker fabric which has been waiting for a project....hmmm!  I can see more bunting in the offing!

Told you I was a bit obsessed with bunting?   But why not join in?   Feel free to ask me any bunting related questions you have and I will try to help!

Bunting!

Do you like bunting?  I do and last year I went a bit mad for it with some cute Easter themed fabrics and colours and some gorgeous large ric-rac braid.

The original inspiration came from this book Quilt Yourself Gorgeous by Mandy Shaw which you can get here!

and I did make some birthday bunting from it for my boys but then I just went
one step beyond.  Cue Madness.....song, not mental strife!

Can you see the green fabric with daisies on underneath the letters T and S?  That is a little piece left over that my mother kept from a dress she made me when I was in my early teens to go to my cousins wedding - well he is due to retire soon....doesn't time fly??  Okay enough embarrassing stories!

I still have some bits cut out to make more bunting for Spring - with lambs on it this time...but am waiting on more ricrac:

I also have the supplies to make some Hallowe'en bunting....ooooooh:

And last year I wanted to make Russian matroyshka bunting, for Christmas of course ...here is the fabric.  Have you got any of these - they certainly seemed popular at the time?

That makes least three sets of bunting - my UFO list lengthens as we speak!

How is the bunting in your life?  Are you all s-t-r-u-n-g out or floating on the breeze?

I think she likes it!

I posted earlier about a matroyshka cushion I made for a friend.  Well I had to give it to her early as it's her birthday today!  And she's away on holiday!  Happy Birthday Den!

I wrapped it up specially and enticed her upstairs where it was waiting for her.  Here is the package:

And just to remind you here is the cushion:

I made the matroyshka applique by printing out a colouring page and using it as my template.  I used a mixture of fabrics, felt and ribbon, stitched them in place, embroidered features, layered just the white square with batting, and outline quilted it with embroidery floss.  Then I found a chunky corduroy for the backing (2 pieces) which I secured in the middle by some big buttons.  Sorry forgot to take a photo of the back!

Have you got a cushion(or should I say pillow) in the making?

Cushion for a friend.....

Here is a cushion that I have made for a friend.  Her birthday is not until next month so for once I am ahead of myself - long may it last...!

My friend had asked a relative if she could bring back a matroyshka cushion from Russia but her wish was not fulfilled.  I thought I would make her one albeit not from Russia...  I hope she likes it!  But I have to wait now till I find out...

I have tried to insert a close up but the photo comes out sideways - I'm hoping that you can click on the photo and get your own close up if you want.
