The Plane of Fiora

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

For today's post, we want to settle in and do a bit of exploration of Magic: the Gathering's newly revealed Plane of Fiora.  We here at MTG Realm love the flavorful storyline of each new block just as much as the individual cards which populate each set within that block.  In this game, a thematic storyline is presented against the backdrop of the Multiverse which is composed of an almost infinite number of different Planes of existence.  Each Plane is a succint individual world or limited number of worlds each potentially occupied by a civilization or populace, a terrain, and just about anything else one could expect the Wizards of the Coast team to create in a world-building exercise.

The most recent revelation of the Plane of Fiora is today's topic.  This is the environment in which the soon to be released set of Conspiracy is to take place.  From a number of articles the Magic Creative Team has published or hints within the cards previewed so far (here, here and here), we can get a sense of the environment created here.  From the Magic: the Gathering comic book stories provided by IDW Publishing we learn that Fiora is the birthplace of the Planeswalker Dack Fayden (art here illustrated by Eric Deschamps)

The card art so far revealed shows a world whose buildings and fashion which appears to be similar to that of the Italian Renaissance. We are really liking the arts so far and want to have just about every card from MTG Mint Card if we can.  Furthermore, we now have an idea of some of the more important geographical or points of interest on this plane - namely;

• The High City of Paliano
• The Lowlands, the Lower City of Paliano
• The Corru River which flows through the Lower City
• Talon, a neighbouring settlement
• Drakeston, now a ghost town

Here's some text from the mothersite to help color in this world -
Far from Theros, on the plane of Fiora, the High City of Paliano is home to countless intrigues and plots. The high lords of the city vie for supremacy. Move is met with countermove, and trust with betrayal, all under the auspices of the immortal King Eternal. But the king was a living man, once, and a friend to the elf explorer Selvala...

MTG PAX Conspiracy

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

As it is Thursday, it'll be Commander evening at OMG! Games here in Barrie, so if you're in the area, do drop by - they're at the City's north end near Georgian College.  Speaking of OMG! Games, we've yattered with the owners and will be giving away an Ultra PRO Dual Flip Box we did a review on recently during the Friday Night Magic event tomorrow (Friday 17th April, games starting at 7:00 P.M.).

https://twitter.com/OMGGAMES

Next up before we get into today's topic - some more Conspiracy fun.  During the PAX East MTG Panel, there was some frivolity which included an interruption by the mysterious 'King Brago' who directed Mark Purvis (WotC MTG Brand Director and PAX East 2014 MTG Panelist) to reveal a new card type - a colorless 'Conspiracy' card.

Following PAX East, Wizards had posted this video coverage of the MTG Panel relating to Conspiracy.

Of interest was the artwork for what is undeniably that of the Planeswalker Dack Fayden.  If you do not know, Dack Fayden is the protagonist of the Magic: the Gathering comics (specifically, the 'Spell Thief' series) released by IDW Publishing. In search of greater magical knowledge and on the hunt for the people who destroyed his town, Dack Fayden is the greatest thief in the Multiverse.

At the very end of this video was a QR code, which when used directs us a trail of breadcrumbs through the internet to solve and follow eventually providing a partial spoiler of the new Dack Fayden Planeswalker card as shown below.  It appears we are in for an engaging slow roll reveal.

MTG Path of Vengeance

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

On the weekend, we dropped over to Big B Comics here in Barrie, Ontario to pick up some missing issues in both of our Magic: the Gathering comic book series.  A very helpful staff member dug around in the back room and was able to complete our collection of the initial MTG Comic series, as well as the next one, Spell Thief.  Here is a quick run down of the special promo cards of each comic in the series so far . . .

Magic: the Gathering Comics IDW Promo Cards :
• Treasure Hunt
• Faithless Looting
• Feast of Blood
• Electrolyze

Magic: the Gathering Comics IDW Spell Thief Promo Cards :
• Arrest
• Consume Spirit
• Standstill
• Breath of Malfegor

We are now consider picking up a few of the non-promo / regular cards from MTG Mint Card to work out a few casual fun builds we are contemplating right now.  Anywhoos - onto today's post!  The next Magic: the Gathering comic series to be issued by Wizards of the Coast and IDW Publishing is called 'Path of Vengeance'.  This story line again features the badboy Planeswalker Thief, Dack Fayden in all sorts of mischief in the City of Ravnica.  We expect a few promo cards here is see print in either Gatecrash or Dragon's Maze in the current Return to Ravnica block.  We've provided the anticipated release date of each comic but please don't hold your breath - their record of street release dates are pretty bad (perhaps this has something to do with possible spoilers and official previews?).
