Jazz The World Forgot, Jazz Classics of the 1920s Early Roots and Branches of Jazz - Vol.1 [1996]

This groundbreaking series brings together some of the greatest performances of early jazz, illustrating that before jazz became a listener's music of improvised solos it was the rhythm-driven dance music of America, the rock and roll of its day. This album shows the incredible variety of the 1920s jazz by bringing together diverse, often obscure masterpieces by legendary small groups and large bands from both city and country. Highlighted is the rich regional flavor of early American jazz with showpieces by territory bands such as Ross De Luxe Syncopaters, Taylor's Dixie Serenaders, and Roy Johnson's Happy Pals along with classics by the pioneer New Orleans band of Louis Dumaine, Sam Morgan and much more. This is an entertaining and illuminating exploration of early jazz which traces its roots back to marching bands, ragtime and vaudeville.

Les Misérables Brass Band - Manic Traditions [1994]

As the use of brass wind instruments in popular music rises (Tubas are Very Big this year) more awareness of the wide variety of international regional brass driven music is also rising. From the Balkans to Benin, from Mexico to Switzerland, from New Orleans to the mountains of Peru, Klezmer and much more, there is a lot of very different styles and traditions that have developed from the remnants of military empires and their marching bands.
Le Miserables Brass Band was one of the first groups to pull together many of these elements, finding the connections and make them into something new. Dance, Folk/Traditional, Ceremonial, Religious, Jazz, Rock and categories that had not been widely known in the USA are presented with both great understanding and great energy.
All of the musicians on this recording have gone on to be significant performers, soloists, band leaders, composers, and inspirations to many other musicians.

Soul Rebels Brass Band - No More Parades [1998]

As Dirty Dozen and Rebirth were the major players in the transition away from traditional to the modern brass band sounds that dominate the city, Soul Rebels, in a way, are the next step, incorporating more hip-hop into their sound while still staying loyal to the origins.

The perfect pedigree, the band was born when two younger members of Dejean’s Young Olympia Brass Band -- Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss – struck out on their own as they wanted to add the flavors of what they were hearing on the radio into the brass band sound.

The album is a nice mix of hip-hop, Latin influences bringing to table to the up-tempo party sound that the band has honed playing hundreds of shows at the Le Bon Temps Roule, but never lost in the inclusion of so many influences is the large, booming brass band sound from second lines as well as is that strong marching band beat.

Bollywood brass band - Rahmania (2002)

The Bollywood Brass Band plays Indian film music - this is intelligent, lively, powerful and innovative music, easily accessible also for the European ear.
The BBB combines the talents of 11, mainly English rooted, musicians, eight of them playing brass instruments (saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tuba, sousaphone, flugelhorn), added by three percussionists. In live this band is a unique experience, full of energy and passion. This second album of the band presents this live feeling rather well, also this CD is full of energy, talent and happiness. The music focusses on the works of the Indian film music composer A.R. Rahman, and his style combines diverse music styles, such as World Music, Jazz, Brass Band, Film music, and much more. The BBB interpretations of his works make exciting and varied listening.
Additionally to their usual music that they play in live, the band have added four tracks that act more as 20 minutes of bonus tracks. For those numbers, they asked famous UK remixers and Club DJs (Transglobal Underground; Kamel Nitrate; Groove Road) to create remixes of four tracks from the CD.
If you like Brass based folk and world music, you should give the Bollywood Brass Band a try. This is a magnificent and impressive album.

Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra - Unza Unza Time [2000]

No Smoking's debut as a "world" band reintroduces filmmaker Emir Kusturica -- who had a brief stint as the bass player of Zabranjeno Pusenje (Yugoslavian for No Smoking) in the mid-'80s -- to the group. Now one of the band's guitarists, he contributes sparingly toward songwriting and arranging. This is still the band of lead singer Dr. Nelle Karajlic, whose acerbic vocals and commanding presence dictate the group's course. But colorful instruments like balalaika, tuba, accordion, trumpet, and accordion contribute significantly as well. The term "Unza Unza" describes the hybrid of music found on this record. The Balkans are a centrally located region surrounded by Turkish, European gypsy, Greek, Russian, Middle Eastern, and Italian music. German and Spanish music is also welcome into this interwoven musical fabric that cites the local music of Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Albania, Bosnia, and Bulgaria as its foundation. The '70s punk sound that was No Smoking's initial influence is all but abandoned here, although Karajlic still retains some of his snarling and loathsome attitude. Combine that with the eclecticism of groups like Reptile Palace Orchestra and Brave Combo and the offbeat tendencies of mid-'80s Tom Waits, and perhaps a rough portrait of this group can be painted. This is an incredibly unique album that is essential listening for fans of alternative world music.

Loukianos Kilaidonis - Tragoudia gia kaka pedia [1986] & Nea Kipseli nea Orleani [1998]

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Hypnotic Brass Ensemble [2009]

The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. The set features guest appearances from Malcolm Catto, Tony Allen, Flea, and Damon Albarn – but the real strength of the record lies in the group's amazing horns and rhythms – on titles that include "War", "Gibbous", "Alyo", "Ballicki Bone", "Jupiter", "Marcus Garvey", "Party Started", "Sankofa", "Satin Sheets", "Hypnotic", and 2 versions of "Rabbit Hop".

Philip Cohran & Artistic Heritage Ensemble - On the beach [1968]

Mindblowing – and a landmark recording that crosses all boundaries in the Chicago music scene of the late 60s! Philip Cohran was a visionary musician who'd played with Sun Ra during the 60s, but who left Ra to forge his own musical vision by the middle part of the decade. The Artistic Heritage ensemble was a crucially important group in Chicago – one that drew players from both the soul and jazz scenes, with a wealth of talents that later went onto work with groups like Earth Wind & Fire, The Pharoahs, Ra's Arkestra, and other ensembles. Talents on this set alone include players like Charles Handy, Don Myrick, Aaron Dodd, Henry Gibson, and Louis Satterfield – not to mention Cohran, who plays cornet (as he did with Sun Ra), plus two groovy instruments of his own invention: the violin uke and the great Frankiphone, a sort of electric thumb piano whose use on these recordings pre-dated the very famous Kalimba sound that Earth Wind & Fire would use to great success during the 70s. The album includes the driving conga funk track "Unity", the singing soulful track "The Minstrel", the incredibly haunting "On The Beach", and the track "Motherhood", which has a strong Abbey Lincoln type of feel. The whole thing's a beautiful batch of spiritual jazzy tracks with a good groove – and a perfect blend of soul and spirit, jazz and righteousness!

Cicala Mvta - Ching Dong - Return Of Japanese Street [1997]

Avant - improv - folk - punk - prog - jazz - new orleans - klezmer - gipsy - balkan - east asian.... you need a train of words to describe.... music that starts from japanese street performances (chindon) and goes globally... madly.
The sound of CICALA MVTA is developed around the mainman/composer WATARU OHKUMA`s distinctive clarinet improvisations, by an unsual line up of musicians playing the tuba, percussions, fiddle, cello, electric guitar... The compositions are complexed, rich in multicultural references, with many unexpected turns and changes; the "street" feeling though, (lyrical, dramatic, bufooning ) is always present...
"CHING DONG..." is the german version of the first self-titled CICALA MVTA album.
Moniker CICALA MVTA honours the memory of the great, early 20th century japanese streetmusic singer, Soeda Azembo, the "mute cicada".

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Americana Deluxe [1998]

For their major-label debut, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy don't change their tune at all, which is a good thing. Like their two indie releases, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a rollicking set of big-band swing, performed with energy and tongue-in-cheek. The group runs through a number of standards and originals, and while their ironic humor may irritate purists, their vigorous, exciting performances make the album a delight.

Salah Ragab and The Cairo Jazz Band - Egyptian jazz

Salah Ragab formed the first jazz big band in Egypt in 1968, and was also the leader of the Military Music Departments in Heliopolis. On this recording the band consists of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums and percussion. Western jazz musicians have been fascinated with the world of Islam for many years, and it was therefore inevitable that musicians of the Arabian North African area would be equally influenced by western music. This record represents The Cairo Jazz Band responding to the American jazz scene of the 60s and 70s with influences from Mongo Santamaria, Yusef Lateef and Ahmud Abdul-Malik to Randy Weston and Sun Ra. This release marks the first time Salah Ragab and The Cairo Jazz Band's definitive works are presented to the west.
