UPROAR OVER CITIZEN DE NIRO
ROBERT De Niro may have to wait a little longer for his honorary Italian citizenship now that the Sons of Italy have accused the acting legend of perpetuating Mafia stereotypes.
8 Completely icky, I’ll grant you, but is this a good omen for Keyes?
NASTY NAPKIN
YECCH! A napkin soaked with sweat from the brow of Illinois senatorial wannabe Alan Keyes has been sold on eBay for $540. The sweat was sopped by Keyes supporter Jerry McGlothlin, who told the Chicago Sun-Times: "I noticed that he was sweating up a storm, so I took a napkin out of my pocket, blotted the sweat from his brow and said, 'Welcome to Chicago.' " McGlothlin has said he intends to donate the cash to the conservative Republican's long-shot campaign against popular Democrat Barack Obama. The match-up is the first between two black candidates for the same U.S. Senate seat in the nation's history.
8 Reality: what a concept!
WATERY WARNING
SHARKS aren't the only sea dwellers spooking Daniel Travis. The star of the low-bud get but much-buzzed-about fish tale "Open Water" got a firsthand glimpse of just how tight security is in New York's waterways these days. Travis, in town to shoot Us Weekly's "Man of the Week" feature, took an afternoon yacht cruise around Manhattan with a group of writers and photographers. As the vessel headed back to shore, a Coast Guard swift boat intercepted it. After questioning the ship's captain and getting approval from the harbor patrol, the yacht and its passengers were allowed to leave. "The reality of the current situation in New York really hit home," marveled Travis, a former New Yorker who said that the incident whisked him back to the days after 9/11.

Kerry’s running out of time, stories, and options. No wonder he’s sent out the attack dogs.
DISARMINGLY CHARMING
Bush, that is, not Kerry. It’s beginning to dawn on his detractors that Bush is not such a dope after all. They're still unable to admit, however, that the Bush you see is the real Bush, not some act. I’ve culled the only worthwhile bit from the article. However, if you do want to read the whole thing, L.dotter DesertFox has graciously supplied the following info:

Ruthlessly charming Bush runs rings around Kerry
Love him or loathe him, the past ten days have reminded voters and political journalists just what an effective campaigner Mr Bush is.
As he and John Kerry, his Democratic opponent, have engaged in the first intensive round of election-year combat, sparring with each other as they criss-crossed the country's battleground states, even Senator John Kerry's friends admit that Mr Bush has run rings around him.
At the same time, Mr Bush has donned a persona with crowds that has proved disarmingly effective all his political life: funny, down to earth, slightly humble, with an artfully simple message delivered in skilfully crafted short sentences. It is an image that deliberately hides a man with formidable political gifts and instinct.
CONFRONTATIONS
I bought at least ten of those buttons well over a year ago, and I’ve given a few away. When I began wearing one on my denim shirt this summer I wondered if I would get snide comments or, per chance, a thumbs-up signal of approval. It never occurred to me that I would encounter someone who didn’t know who “W” was. So imagine my surprise, while picking up my NY Post at Faulisi’s Newsstand in Corning, a complete stranger asked me.
“W? Who’s W? … You mean Bush?”Maybe it’s because I’m a female, but my experience was mild compared to Tyler’s.
“Yes.”
“Don’t tell me you’re for Bush? Oh, God, you are!”
I smiled and replied, “Yes, I’m for Bush.”
“He’s the worst ever! Do you know who you’re voting for? You can’t be serious!”
I smiled and repeated, “Yes, I’m serious and I’m voting for Bush.”
Irrational Left on U Street
He got up in my face and yelled, calling me stupid and racist. I finally put my hand on his shoulder and calmly said, "Neither of us is going to convince the other." He called me and Bush an idiot again, saluted (?), and walked away.
...
The guy didn't know dick, but he knew the line -- he knew the message, and he could yell it. The Left -- irrational, hate-filled name-callers. Is this the current base of the Democrat Party?
KERRY’S ACCOUNT CRUMBLING
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., hugs his Vietnam swiftboat crewmate, the Rev. David Alston, while surrounded by other Vietnam War crewmates who greeted him upon his arrival at Logan International Airport in Boston Wednesday, July 28, 2004.
Notice the head wound on Alston’s head in the picture. It’s important to unraveling Kerry’s fabrication. Read the entire article; it's phenominal!
Alston Never Served Under Kerry
Thanks to reader Lori in Texas, I think we've just about pieced the record together on David Alston and his supposed service under John Kerry's command. Lori points out a sympathetic article on Dale Sandusky, one of the few Swift boat veterans supporting Kerry and one that served on his boat, specifically gives the timing on Kerry's command of PCF-94.
…
If this gets out to the mainstream media, this story kills Kerry's campaign. This isn't just a guy embellishing his war record -- this is a deliberate and longstanding attempt to mislead and defraud people by creating his own witnesses after the fact. That he could have done such a clumsy job should disqualify him for higher office on that basis alone.
KerryHaters continually updates the Kerry saga.

8 roberto, at DynamoBuzz, is a Joi-zee blogger and has been keeping up with the McGreedy case: But let's make one thing clear. He's not resigning because he's gay. It's because he's gotten into some trouble over it. … And it's a sad day for DynamoBuzz. What am I going to write about now that McGreevey is gone?? Look out, Frank Lautenberg.
8 Aaron, at SomethingToCryAbout, has an excellent piece on Kerry’s expectations: If active duty means you can be president, then why isn't my dad president? Why do military people even need to interview for positions once they get out? Why not just walk into a business and say, 'hire me and don't ask any questions'?
8 Aaron (another one), at PardonMyEnglish, thinks the US can learn a lot from Israel on fighting terrorism: When it comes to terrorism and dealing with terrorist threats constantly, Israel is unfortunately an expert. Having visited Israel twice and having walked down the streets of Jerusalem with a strong presence of the Israeli army a constant, it’s quite clear they know what they are doing. While I don’t expect the United States to precisely follow Israel’s example, we can a learn a lot from the Israelis
8 Tyler, at RedLinerAnts, has posted the good CBO results of Bush’s tax cuts: Today, the CBO released a Democrat-requested report on President Bush's tax cuts. What the media isn't reporting - surprise - are the findings of the report that show the Bush tax cuts have provided significant tax relief for all taxpayers at all income levels.
KERRY’S EXCELLENT CAMBODIAN ADVENTURE
When Kerry realised he had a problem with his Christmas in Cambodia story, he turned to his biographer, Douglas Brinkley, for help. Pat, at KerryHaters, has read and reviewed “Tour Of Duty” in KerryHaters several months ago. But when he heard that Brinkley was going to try to rescue Kerry on this, Pat sat down yesterday and performed a Herculean task of going through Brinkley’s book page by page and has written a first report.
Christmas in Cambodia--Dramatis Personae
I thought it might be useful to get some basics down from Brinkley's book; the people, the boats, the timelines. This time I was able to get a non-large print version of Tour of Duty, so I will be able to highlight the pages where the information is located. I'm starting with Chapter 10, since that concerns the events of Christmas Eve, 1968)
…
Kerry's boat at Christmas 1968 was the PCF-44 (Page 209). Men on board the PCF-44 are as follows: Drew Whitlow (209), James Wasser, Radarman (213) also second in command (228); Stephen Hatch, Bosun's Mate (214), Stephen Gardner, Gunner's Mate (215) Bill Zaldonis, Engine Man (160). Gardner is the SBVfT member. Zaldonis and Hatch are apparently supporting Kerry, but also refuse to confirm the Cambodia story. These men are the ones to interview! What was the time of their service with John Kerry?
…
December 24, 1968. Purported date of Kerry's Cambodia Adventure. (209-219). Some parts of Kerry's adventure confirmed (three ships fired on by mortars), fired on by South Vietnamese troops, but of course, the actual Cambodian incursion never actually happens. Lots of parts of this chapter attempt to create the impression that Kerry was very close to Cambodia: "...only miles from from the Cambodian border. Because they were only an hour away from that neighboring country..." (209), "...patrolled the watery borderline between Cambodia and Vietnam..." (210), "...patrolling near the Cambodian line..."(210). Looking at the map here, it becomes pretty obvious that Brinkley is trying to keep alive the hope that Kerry was near the border. They go from My Tho, to Long Binh, to Sa Dec. Look at the map of the city of Vinh Long (referred to in the book as Long Binh) and the cities of Sa Dec (destination) and My Tho(starting point) (appears when you expand the map of Vinh Long one time). As you can see the notion that they were patrolling the border between Vietnam and Cambodia is ridiculous. Which absolutely means that David Brinkley knew he was unable to confirm the Cambodia story and is trying as hard as possible to make the "near the border" story as credible as possible. But the map gives him away. What does this mean? That they absolutely knew they were in trouble on this story that Kerry had repeated so many times over the years.
Read the entire report; it’s a MUST READ!
SLOWLY BUT SURELY
A member of the Iraqi National Guard and an American soldier work together to patrol the streets of Baghdad, Iraq Wednesday July 28, 2004. Part training, part public relations, the joint patrol comprised of U.S. and Iraqi troops is an essential part of Washington's eventual exit strategy: putting Iraqis in charge of their own security so American troops can go home. Since the sovereignty transfer, U.S. officials say Iraqis are patrolling more _ both with U.S. troops and without. (AP Photo/Khalid Mohammed)
TERRORIST OVERREACH
By Ralph Peters
AL Qaeda and its affiliates are losing. They'll do their utmost to strike the United States before our elections. But even if they succeed, the effect will be the opposite of what they hope. And it won't change the fact that the terrorist beast is badly wounded.
The recent wave of arrests, from Pakistan through the Middle East to Britain, stunned the terrorists and sent them crawling for ever-deeper cover. The blow against terror has been so indisputable that even our embrace-the-terrorists-with-understanding crowd stopped crying that the War on Terror's a failure (note the shift in campaign rhetoric).
But it's also a fact that this struggle is far from over. It will take at least a full generation — perhaps much longer — to rid the world of the demons who have appointed themselves as Allah's executioners.
…
In Iraq, the terrorists found themselves unable to discourage or dislodge U.S. troops and core Coalition forces, so they began bombing Iraqis. But blowing local kids to bits does not win friends and influence people in your favor. The most striking recent development in Iraq — ignored by the global media — has been the rise of Iraqi resolve to eliminate foreign terrorists from their country.
…
Osama bin Laden lost a great propaganda tool when he stopped allowing video cameras near him. (He grew too afraid for his personal safety after 9/11.) But the terrorists' real "secret weapon" has been the Internet, the greatest means of disseminating hatred in history, more virulent by far than even the printing press.
For years, Islamic extremists used the 'Net with confidence and skill. It became their virtual empire and a citadel within which they could muster. Now — as a result of the seizure of over 50 computer discs in Pakistan and, by some reports, a thousand in Britain, along with loaded hard drives, Web address books and so much data we've barely begun to decipher it — al Qaeda must fear each next keystroke.
...
Their madness will be their undoing.
“STRAIGHT TALK” IN A “SWING STATE”
New Jersey Gov. James. E. McGreevey, middle, leaves with his wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, left, and his father, Jack McGreevey, following a news conference where he announced his resignation, in Trenton, N.J. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004. Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday and acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man. 'My truth is that I am a gay American,' he said. (AP Photo/Daniel Hulshizer)
Notice who are smiling and who isn't.
The Truth Has Set New Jersey Free
Since assuming office in 2002, McGreevey has presided over an administration that set new standards for corruption -- and this in a state responsible for the ethically challenged Robert Torricelli. Only last month, one of the governor's fundraisers, David D'Amiano, was indicted on federal charges of extorting $40,000 in political donations and bribes. He was in disreputable company. Real estate developer Charles Kushner, the chairman of Kushner Companies and the most generous donor to McGreevey's 2001 gubernatorial campaign, was charged with paying a call girl $25,000 to videotape her having sex with a witness cooperating in a grand jury probe of his taxes.
It was Kushner who connected McGreevey with the man with whom the governor apparently had an affair, Golan Cipel. In January 2001, McGreevey tapped Cipel, then a marketing staffer for Kushner, to serve as his homeland security adviser at a yearly salary of $110,000. Amazingly, no background check or official statement attended the announcement.
The appointment stirred a statewide furor. As it happened, Cipel, a former Israeli sailor and a published poet, had little to recommend him for the critical post. Mere months after a terrorist attack on New York City, the governor's pick for the state's top security office lacked both security clearance and a law enforcement experience. His background was in television news and public relations. Indeed, Cipel, an Israeli national, was not even an American citizen.
…
Cipel "wanted to have a place that was in close proximity to where the governor was because he was a personal advisor on call 24 hours."
…
If the truth has set Jim McGreevey free, it has also unburdened New Jersey of one of the most corrupt administration's in recent history.

RNC Not Welcome In NYC
The Republican National Committee has, for the first time in its 150 year history, selected New York for their Convention from August 29-September 2, 2004. In a shallow attempt at exploiting the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the RNC has pushed the Convention date to September. We have witnessed two unjust wars, at least one American life lost each day overseas, a depressed economy, the collapse of the dollar, $87 billion to boost war profiteering, the closing of our firehouses, a health-care crisis, millions of children being left behind, and now this. We say, Enough!

BILLIE JO: I noticed the McDonald's bag right away. It was so big and I thought, how many burgers does he have in there? It was weird. And I noticed the man with the limp -- it was more than a limp. It was a dragging of the foot.
I also have to tell you one detail that you didn't catch. I emailed this detail to the Department of Homeland Security but I haven't heard back. As I mentioned, the tall man in the jogging suit sat right behind me. He got up and passed by me to go to the bathroom up in first class. … The man was gone for a very long time. And when he came back, he reeked of chemicals -- the chemicals from the toilet bowl. He absolutely reeked of it. And I thought, what was he doing in the toilet? He didn't smell like chemicals when he got up to go to the bathroom -- it was when he came back. It was so spooky. What was he doing in there? That he would smell so strong of chemicals from the toilet?

Our Advice to President Bush: How To Hoist Kerry on His Own Petard
For a supposedly "dumb" guy, and one who's not a lawyer (thank God), President Bush sure does know how to set a trap. And if the mainstream press were doing their job, the trap would not have been necessary.
What's the trap you say? It was using a cross examination technique used by good lawyers to dismantle witnesses. He made John Kerry to respond to a specific question, knowing what Kerry's answer would be (thus boxing him in), then laying the smackdown on him with his prior inconsistent statements.
As we here at crushkerry.com have been pointing out, John Kerry has never told the American people what specifically he would DO, other than not be George W. Bush. That is, until earlier this week.
Some dope! Bush earned his Bachelor’s degree from Yale in ’68 and his Harvard MBA in ’75.

According to defamer.com, an "activist" was disturbed that Target was selling the Kabbalah Center's red-string bracelets on its Web site and chided the retailer via e-mail. Target promptly folded, and the Kabbalah Red String is no longer available either in stores or at Target.com. Heat of Battle Takes Toll on U.S. Forces
NAJAF, Iraq — In two days of combat, U.S. Army Spc. Steve Koetting dodged bullets, overcame sleep deprivation and endured the stress of fighting grave-to-grave in a cemetery against an enemy who rarely showed his face.
In the end, however, it was Iraq's oppressive heat that put the 21-year-old soldier on his back and out of the fight.
Koetting is one of about half a dozen soldiers who have been evacuated from the front line in recent days because of heat exhaustion and related problems. Several dozen more have been treated on the battlefield in this south-central Iraqi city, where U.S. troops and armed followers of radical Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada Sadr are squaring off.
With temperatures approaching 130 degrees, medics fear that casualties will increase. "This could become a significant problem," said Brian Humble, senior medical officer with a Marine emergency facility at a camp just outside Najaf.

Kerry's SWIFT meltdown
By Hugh Hewitt
Why all the attention? Simply put, if John Kerry can be conclusively demonstrated to have lied about aspects of his Vietnam service, the media has to ask what else has he been lying about. The voters have to ask if he can be trusted. In short: Free fall.
The lefty bloggers and talking heads are stunned into silence, and have gotten no help from the Kerry people. It's hard to spin a story that hasn't been spun by the campaign since Kerry could elect to go in completely different directions. If he hangs tough on the Christmas Eve and CIA man stories, his allies will know to hang tough as well. But they can't do that without a clear signal, because if Kerry comes out and apologizes for a tall tale, the commentators are cut off at the knees.
It’s KerryHaters for the very up-to-the-minute latest on Kerry.
THEIR TRUE COLORS

Minority journalists embarrassed themselves at convention
By RUBEN NAVARRETTE
When more than 7,000 minority journalists came together last week for the UNITY: Journalists of Color convention, one felt a sense of pride. But after a sudden outburst of partisan politics, pride gave way to embarrassment.
…
At times, I felt I was attending a political rally rather than a meeting of professionals in a news-gathering business that stresses the need for impartiality and objectivity. People snapped pictures. And after Mr. Kerry's remarks, some audience members approached the senator for autographs.
Remember, these are journalists we're talking about. With the exception of opinion writers, journalists are supposed to be objective, impartial and fair. Their job is to be referees, not cheerleaders for one team or another.
…
"It was embarrassing," one editor told me of the anti-Bush reaction. "It's a shame how partisan these things have become. It may just be that a lot of these people don't have a firm grounding in journalism."
IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE?
GOP Seeks Lawyers to Fight Kerry's 2,000 'Locusts'
Perhaps planning to copy Al Gore's coup attempt, Sen. John Kerry is mustering a mob of 2,000 lawyers to create havoc with the election in Florida. Now the Republican Party is seeking legal eagles of its own to swoop down on the invaders.
Hayden Dempsey has resigned as Gov. Jeb Bush's deputy general counsel to head the Florida legal team of his former boss's brother, the Palm Beach Post reported today.
The leader of Kerry's attorneys in Florida: Stephen Zack, who with partner David Boies abetted Gore's antics in 2000. Notable among Zack's troops: Kendall Coffey and Rush Limbaugh's attorney Roy Black.
According to the Post, attorney Joseph Klock, "who represents Secretary of State Glenda Hood and successfully defended then-Secretary of State Katherine Harris before the U.S. Supreme Court, said of the Democrats' battle plan, 'What a horrible environment that will create! Worse than the 17-year locusts — 2,000 lawyers and Democrats at that!'"
Klock, by the way, is also a Democrat.

Keyes: Obama holds 'slaveholder's' view
Republican Alan Keyes ripped into Democratic rival Barack Obama's views on abortion Monday, calling them "the slaveholder's position," as the U.S. Senate race roared back to life in Illinois.
…
Keyes said legalizing abortion deprives the unborn of their equal rights.
"I would still be picking cotton if the country's moral principles had not been shaped by the Declaration of Independence," Keyes said. He said Obama "has broken and rejected those principles-- he has taken the slaveholder's position."
The remarks underscore the uniqueness of this Senate race in which both candidates, one an outspoken conservative and the other a favorite of party liberals, are black.
…
The race between Keyes and Obama sets up the first U.S. Senate election with two black candidates representing the major parties and almost assures Illinois will produce only the fifth black U.S. Senator in history.

Chinese Kerry Out: John Kerry's Private Trade Trip to Beijing
The Kerry campaign currently is struggling with recent photographs of the candidate, one dressed in a "bunny" suit at NASA and another on the bow of a ferry imitating a famous scene from the movie Titanic. However, a new photograph has emerged showing the Massachusetts senator in Beijing, People's Republic of China, working with a company associated with the Chinese military. The Kerry campaign and the Kerry Senate office both are refusing to comment on the Democratic presidential candidate's privately sponsored trade trip to China. Repeated phone calls both to Kerry's campaign headquarters and his Senate office were not returned.
…
John Kerry frequently has stated that he has had contacts with high-ranking officials of foreign governments. Yet, the Kerry campaign is refusing to answer any questions about the candidate's privately sponsored trade trip to China or his relationship with Marcus. But it would appear that the presidential candidate has many friends at high levels in Beijing. The Chinese official Internet news outlet of the People's Daily, official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, recently endorsed the senator from Massachusetts for president of the United States.

If a cab comes toward you and another human grabs it, push him. Elbow him. Knee him. Screech: "Sicko, this is mine!" I mean, there are rules.

Use your cellphone constantly:
No matter if someone's on the other end. Consider it a prop. Hold it in your hand as you eat, drink or shop. Talk into it ceaselessly. Stick it in your ear. If you don't have Krazy Glue, try plastic surgery. Get the thing permanently grafted onto your lobe. Very important to shout into it in restaurants and theaters, on street corners and buses

HELP, I NEED SOMEBODY
The rumor that John Kerry is a senator has not yet been confirmed.
STEER CLEAR
By The Prowler
On a campaign conference call on Friday, Kerry advisers in Washington tore into regional and state party organizers for not getting U.S. Senators out pushing the Kerry candidacy.
"Only a third of the Senate is running for re-election, so it's not as if all of our guys have to run away from their presidential candidate," says a Kerry campaign adviser. "But you sure get that feeling out on the road."
Most prominent in her lack of campaign energy: New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. While the junior senator has been attending party fundraisers, and was prominent during Kerry's Boston party, she has been less than cooperative in attending Kerry campaign events. She isn't alone. Few if any sitting Southern Democratic senators want to be seen with Kerry or for that matter his running mate, Sen. John Edwards.
Meanwhile, there are some U.S. Senators Kerry would prefer not be around. In Illinois, Kerry and his staff have tried to hold Sen. Dick Durbin at arms length, instead attempting to ride the coattails of Senate candidate Barack Obama.
The seeming lack of enthusiasm is more a symptom of the candidates, and less about any real dislike for them on the part of their former colleagues, says a senior Democratic Senate staffer.
"Both of our guys are senators. You don't need more of the same guys out there pushing them, unless they are national figures, like Hillary or Obama are," says the staffer. "If Kerry really wanted these guys out there, he would make a point of asking. But he's never up here on the Hill to ask. Maybe that's the problem."

Tourist Copters in New York City a Terror Target
Pakistan has given American officials what they regard as credible and specific information indicating that Al Qaeda has considered using tourist helicopters in terror attacks in New York City, domestic security officials said Sunday.
…
The senior intelligence official and security advisers to President Bush have said they increasingly see the intelligence about the financial institutions and about possible plans by Al Qaeda to stage an attack in the United States as part of a unified terror plot to disrupt the elections in the fall.
The reconnaissance missions appear to have been conducted three or four years ago, but officials said they considered the information about Al Qaeda's possible interest in things like helicopters and financial institutions to be critical in understanding how or where terrorists might strike, if not when.
"Current intelligence streams, concurrent with our own threat analysis, is leading us in this direction," the homeland security official said of the threat to chartered helicopters.

Al Qaeda's Pre-Election Plot
Exclusive: With an eye on striking America, bin Laden's network is hard at work. On the trail of its targets and tactics
There can be little doubt that Al Qaeda is trying to strike the American homeland before Nov. 2. "We are in the midst of Al Qaeda efforts to attack the U.S. on a scale as big or larger than 9/11," says John Brennan, chief of the Terrorist Threat Integration Center, the interagency operation that consolidates threat information (and produces the Putter). The decision to raise the threat level to Code Orange ("high") last week was not, as partisans and conspiracists suggested, a Republican political stunt intended to slow John Kerry as he came out of the Democratic convention. But the announcement was clumsily handled, and the confusing press accounts that followed mostly obscured a larger and more important story.
