Functional brain networks are associated with both sex and gender in children | Science Advances
Sex and gender are associated with human behavior throughout the life span and across health and disease, but whether they are associated with similar or distinct neural phenotypes is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that, in children, sex and gender are uniquely reflected in the intrinsic functional connectivity of the brain. Somatomotor, visual, control, and limbic networks are preferentially associated with sex, while network correlates of gender are more distributed throughout the cortex. These results suggest that sex and gender are irreducible to one another not only in society but also in biology.

Dissolving Structures – Ursula - Hauser & Wirth
Ingrid Schaffner: Rachel, there is a sculpture of yours that haunts me: the Butter Cave from 2007, a large rectangular block of yellow waxy material with a burrowed interior, as an animal might dig, calling the eye to enter through a number of holes. It’s such a simple yet mysterious object, like a secret in the room. Your latest exhibition strikes me as a room full of secrets. The ensemble of works—made from cast aluminum, bronze, 3D printing, resin, encaustic paint and paper—come together to form a kind of topography, with low-lying floor sculptures that give rise to a central group of freestanding towers and wall reliefs. Can you tell us a bit about your process?

Rachel Khedoori: I started with a model of a house that was pulled apart and reassembled with small broken pieces. The pieces had been laying around, a kind of accretion of objects. I 3D-printed some of the small objects to make them larger, and others were manually blown-up for this exhibition. While working with the smaller objects, I was thinking about their shadows. I set panes of glass between them to create not just reflections, but superimpositions of the reflections and objects...

The genesis of the Iraq Book Project was the horror of the war, and of witnessing it unfold. At the time, this was 2007, I was thinking about the war but also about its documentation in the press and online. I was interested in ideas of perception and how “facts” evolve and shift as they are communicated across differences of time and place. I compiled articles from both Western and Eastern newspapers—mostly Western because I didn’t have the ability to translate and search in Arabic, but I was able to use a few Arabic newspapers also published in English. The articles were reformatted so that the books looked like they were written as novels. There are no titles, and one article bleeds into the next. I thought I would keep going with it and, in theory, I could have—there are instructions that come with the piece—but after producing about eighty very large volumes, I stopped. The idea that it can keep going is part of it.

A detailed look at children’s brains might show how sex and gender are different, new study says (CNN | July 2024)
The authors used a kind of artificial intelligence called machine learning that built a model that could predict a child’s sex and reported gender from their brain scan. When the researchers looked the children’s brain scans, the results seemed to show that sex influenced different regions of the brain that are involved in visual processing, sensory processing and motor control and some regions involved in executive function, which lets an individual organize and integrate information across time.

Gender seems to influence some of the more sensory-specific networks that are associated with sex, but it also seems to have a broader influence and can be detected on different brain networks involved in executive function, including things like attention, social cognition and emotional processing.

After his executive order on sex, is Trump legally the first female president? | Arwa Mahdawi | The Guardian
Did Trump accidentally declare himself the first female president?

It would be extremely satisfying if the answer to that question was an unequivocal yes. But the more accurate answer is: No, although there is room to argue that the executive order decrees all humans, including Trump, are non-binary. Still, you can see why so many people came to the conclusion that the executive order was assigning everyone as female. The confusing and vague executive order underscores just how complex sex is.

Most scientists now reject the idea that sex is strictly binary. The likes of Nature, possibly one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world, has noted that “the research and medical community now sees sex as more complex than male and female”. And there’s a huge amount of disagreement as to how these categories should be described. “Scientists ourselves cannot agree on how to define the two sexes,” Rachel Levin, a Pomona College neuroscientist who studies the development of sex, told me over the phone. “To say that sex is simple and easily defined – and defined at conception – is factually incorrect.”

There are lots of factors that contribute to how we think about sex, including physical characteristics, hormone levels, gamete size (larger gametes are eggs while smaller gametes are sperm), sex chromosomes, etc. Trump’s executive order seems to tie sex to just gamete size at conception. This is despite the fact that a lot of academics have moved away from a sex-classification system based primarily on gametes because some people will never produce a gamete. And, while it’s true that most people inherit either XX (typically female) or XY (typically male) chromosomes at conception, declaring that sex is determined so early is overly simplistic.

Le Cinéma Club | THE COLORS
The celebrated Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami began his career making films for children — many of which are collected in this wonderful program on the Criterion Channel. A graduate from the University of Tehran School of Fine Arts, Kiarostami joined the filmmaking department of Kanoon (The Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults) in 1969. Throughout the two decades he worked there — during which he made this week’s film selection, the delightful and energetic The Colors — what started as “just a job” turned out to make him “an artist.”

The Colors was the seventh film Kiarostami made for Kanoon, and it called upon his previous experience directing around 150 television commercials between 1962 and 1966. The film’s propulsive rhythm, which he deemed necessary to entertain children, recalls his finesse as a director of commercials, while the film’s emphasis on form and color anticipates the distinct visual language he developed in works such as The Koker Trilogy.

Biology Is Not Binary | American Scientist
Sex is not binary. Presenting male and female as the only two possible sex categories ignores the diversity of humans and other organisms, and it erases intersex people.
Defining sex is difficult because human biology varies widely. Key traits overlap extensively and rarely fall into two discrete types. Ultimately, the definition of sex is culturally constructed.
A more inclusive definition of sex will deepen our understanding of biological variation. When necessary, scientists should define sex according to their specific research questions.

US proposal for defining gender has no basis in science
According to a draft memo leaked to The New York Times, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposes to establish a legal definition of whether someone is male or female based solely and immutably on the genitals they are born with. Genetic testing, it says, could be used to resolve any ambiguity about external appearance. The move would make it easier for institutions receiving federal funds, such as universities and health programmes, to discriminate against people on the basis of their gender identity.

The memo claims that processes for deciding the sex on a birth certificate will be “clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable”.

The proposal — on which HHS officials have refused to comment — is a terrible idea that should be killed off. It has no foundation in science and would undo decades of progress on understanding sex — a classification based on internal and external bodily characteristics — and gender, a social construct related to biological differences but also rooted in culture, societal norms and individual behaviour. Worse, it would undermine efforts to reduce discrimination against transgender people and those who do not fall into the binary categories of male or female.

Furthermore, biology is not as straightforward as the proposal suggests. By some estimates, as many as one in 100 people have differences or disorders of sex development, such as hormonal conditions, genetic changes or anatomical ambiguities, some of which mean that their genitalia cannot clearly be classified as male or female. For most of the twentieth century, doctors would often surgically alter an infant’s ambiguous genitals to match whichever sex was easier, and expect the child to adapt. Frequently, they were wrong. A 2004 study tracked 14 genetically male children given female genitalia; 8 ended up identifying as male, and the surgical intervention caused them great distress (W. G. Reiner and J. P. Gearhart N. Engl. J. Med. 350, 333–341; 2004).

Videosamtalet börjar i motvind.

Inspelad under en show i Portugal hĂ€romĂ„ret, dĂ€r olika digitala pĂ„lĂ€gg gjorts i efterhand.

”It is an emergency”, inleds texten. Och sen: ”In order to survive as a species / we need to define our utopia / the Paris climate accord is a modern utopia / impossible to imagine”.
