2009 Goodwin Champions Box Break

My favourite set from 2009 was Upper Deck's Goodwin Champions. I intend to collect a complete base set of 150 base cards, which doesn't include trying to collect all the short prints. My reason for choosing Goodwins was simple- I liked the design- and I was intrigued by the inclusion of non-baseball related cards, in particular the entomology series. Although the limit of one per case put these firmly out of my reach. There are also a number of 'English' cards available too, in the Citizen of the Day, Citizen of the Century series; Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and unbelievably Tony Blair! Bram Stoker too, if I am opting for British cards. Deemed a Major League Baseball set by Upper Deck, however the inclusion of:
'Champions from every realm of the Sporting World'.
put it directly in the 'other' category and not baseball. Most of the inserts were non-sports related- (Landmarks, Entomology, Thoroughbreds, Citizens of the Day, Animal Series, Citizens of the Century), far too many of the 210(including 60 short prints) base cards were from the other realm(46 if my maths is correct), there were too many short printed cards and super short prints, the card stock was poor (made to look like the original set) and therefore many baseball collectors stuck two fingers up at Upper Deck and avoided this set. Add the fact that there were only 4 cards per pack, meaning that a pack could contain; a 2oth Anniversary crap card, a surfer and/or a poker player, an animal and maybe 1 baseball card. This put many baseball collectors off and in these difficult financial times, most plumed for the superior Allen and Ginter outing from Topps. Although many collectors were disappointed with this set, Upper Deck has decided to release another Goodwin Champions in the summer of 2011. Goodwin Champions 2011 preview. I purchased a box with the specific intention of undertaking a video box break. I did record it on a digital camera. It was poor to say the least, but good practice for when I gain the courage to project my voice to the Internet masses. Here is what the video box break would have told you if it was half-way decent. The box should contain 96 cards. The first pack I opened revealed the memorabilia card above, which means only 3 cards in this pack and therefore 95 cards in the box. The breakdown of the rest of the box; 52 base cards (11 non-baseball), 1 memorabilia, 5 short prints, 1 super short print, 2 Citizens of the Day, 7 20th Anniversary rubbish, 5 mini-exclusives, 22 parallel minis (2 Gypsy Queen black borders, 6 non-baseball) I was able to wipe a fair few off the wants list, leaving 26 left to collect to the complete 150 base set. I would have traded these 7 20th Anniversary cards for 7 more base cards any day. I mean who wants an iceberg card really...anyone?

2009 Tristar Obak

I was fortunate recently to get hold of a 'blaster' of 2010 Obak. Blaster may be stretching it a little, as most of the box contained a large L-shaped block of foam. There are 4 packs within the blaster, each pack containing 6 cards.
The base set consists of 119 cards, 5 of which can only be collected through Tristar Prospect Plus packs. I don't really know enough about Minor League ball to speak confidently about the cards but I like the modern/vintage sets.

Pack 1:
#15 Neftali Feliz Oklahoma City Redhawks
#29 Angel Villalona San Jose Giants
#48 Robert Forrest Jacobs Asheville Tourists
#53 Ike Boone Mission Reds
#60 Joe Wilhoit Salt Lake City Bees
#38 Ron Necciai Bristol Twins T-212 Pack 2:
#64 Gregg Jefferies Jackson Mets
#73 Bud Hillerich and Pete Browning Louisville Slugger
#76 Mike Coolbaugh Columbus Clippers
#89 George H. Rawlings
O-EX3 Barack Obama
#29 Steve Dalkowski Rochester Red Wings T-212
Pack 3:
#36 Al Rosen Oklahoma City Indians
#44 Steve Dalkowski Rochester Red Wings
#59 Gary Redus Waterbury Reds
#74 Alexander Cartwright 'alleged' inventor of baseball
#84 Francis Scott Key
#37 Grover Lowdermilk Mattoon Giants T-212
Pack 4:
#2 Robbie Grossman West Virginia Power
#3 BJ Hermsen GCL Twins
#8 Junichi Tazawa Portland Seadogs
#13 Tim Beckham Bowling Green Hot Rods
#43 Oscar Eckhardt Mission Reds
#5 Michael Ynoa AZL Athletics T-212
Hooked ! Mainly by the names of the players and teams. I have to get some more 'Loudermilk' cards as well as Bristol Twins. Pity the team isn't called Bristol City Twins.
As usual all the cards are up for trade.

2009 Goodwin Champions

For the past few years, because I have so much time on my hands... I like to choose a particular set to complete. There is no rhyme or reason to the set except I like them and as they are placed in their nine little beds they look pretty good.
The sets I have attempted to collect are:

2005 Topps Heritage 175/385 needed

My excitement grew when Upper Deck gave us a Product Review and then the Checklist. Fortunately I was gifted a Blaster and my pursuit was firmly set. But there is still a long way to go before completion. I require 112 from the 150 base set. I need:

1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 44, 46, 47, 49, 50, 52, 53, 54, 56, 58, 59, 60, 61, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 83, 87, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 97, 98, 100, 101, 102, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 112, 113, 115, 116, 117, 118, 120, 121, 122, 124, 126, 127, 128, 130, 131, 132, 134, 135, 136, 137, 139, 140, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147 ,148 ,149 ,150

There are short prints(#151-190), super short prints (#190- 210) and mini exclusives (#211-252) in this as well.

Top Gear Turbo Challenge Trading Cards

In an attempt to find a baseball card substitute, I went into my local newsagents and bought a few packs of whatever they had on offer. The second selection comes from the TV series 'Top Gear'. This is what you may refer to as a 'blokes' show. It is crammed full of anything that moves and can be tinkered with; cars, trucks, bikes, rockets, pushbikes, supermarket trolleys. There is some fast racing, dangerous stunts, celebrity racing and the occasional scantly clad woman. I'm not sure whether it has made its way across to the US, no doubt you probably have your own version. It is, however, very popular with certain age groups of a particular gender.
So a card set? A glorified Top Trumps, at £1.50 a packet for 9 cards is asking a little too much.
The cards are exactly as you would expect, pictures of cars, dangerous stunts and not a scantly clad lady to be found. Which is fortunate, as this is a set aimed at children. A collectors album to hold your cards is available. This appears to be the norm these days.
My favourite moment of the series was a few years back when two of the presenters tried to modify a K-reg Reliant Robin, a three wheeled car, into a reusable space shuttle. They achieved a successful launch but the car failed to separate from the fuel tank, crashed to the ground and exploded shortly after. They now have the dubious record of having the largest rocket launched by a non-government organisation in Europe.
Brilliant TV.

2009 Topps Walmart 'Black' variation

I recently received a blaster of 2009 Topps and was surprised to find that it was a Walmart 'Black' variation blaster. Although I am not sure of the scarcity of these cards, I do know thanks to Things done to cards, way back in March 2009, that is was meant to be clandestine affair but Topps soon revealed that there was two variations on the 2009 Topps. The other being in Target stores and each had a different barcode...code. The person who bought these for me would have been unaware of this so I received these by dumb luck.

So what is the ratio difference between these black border variation and white bordered? Or they just as common?

2009 Goudey Blaster

This blaster was part of the stash a fellow teacher bought back from a US holiday. I collected Goudey in 2008 and like the look of the cards but I would like to collect the Goodwin Champions this year whenever they come out.

2009 Topps Attax

FINALLY! I was able to get a hold of Topps Attax baseball cards from e-bayUK. Things like this often end up on e-bayUK through unwanted birthday gifts or relatives visiting the US. I was a big fan of the English versions of this, in the form of Match Attax Premiership football and Slam Attax Wrestling. It didn't appear to set the collecting world alight in the USA or it is probably old news. Topps did stick with a winning formal hugely successful here in the UK, so I was pleased.
Each of the starter boxes contained 2 code cards, 5 Foil cards and 34 base cards.
The foil cards were:
Dan Harden D-backs Hot Streak,
Brandon Phillips Reds Hot Streak,
Josh Hamilton Rangers Superstar,
Daisuke Matsuzaka Red Sox Superstar and
Nolan Ryan Astros Legend. The code cards were:
Jay Bruce Reds and Chipper Jones Braves

There was a healthy selection of Yankees, Bay Rays, Cubs and Angels. A smattering of the other clubs and one Red Sox Jed Lowrie.
Whether Topps choose to make baseball again is another thing altogether. Topps produce a Match Attax Extra half way through the football season and include different foils, but there is no information whether or not they will follow suit with Baseball Attax. There is however, already talk of next seasons Match Attax Premiership football.
As always, cards are up for trade.

2009 Upper Deck Artifacts blaster

The first of two blasters that were gifted to me recently. 2009 Upper Deck Artifacts: A piece of history baseball. There is the promise of ONE memorabilia card in every box on average. So my first thought is, will I receive an average memorabilia card or not? I know there was a few complaints about non-sports card in sports packs, I personally like the idea more than I do the same card printed in four different colours...wait a minute ... lets not be too quick to judge. I'm guessing there are different coloured parallels in this set.
There are seven packs, with 5 cards per pack.
Pack 1:
#66 Joba Chamberlain Yankees
#118 Josh Geer Padres
#126 James McDonald Dodgers
#160 HM USA enters World War 2
#161 HM 'D-Day' Invasion
Pack 2:
#12 Daisuke Matsuzaka Red Sox
#18 Carlos Zambrano Cubs
#92 Carl Crawford Bay Rays
#115 Alcides Escobar Brewers
#127 Juan Miranda Yankees
Pack 3:
#28 Gardy Sizemore Indians
#87 Chris Carpenter Cardinals
#185 HM X-Ray invented
#BSM-KG Khalil Greene Padres Jersey 29/149
Pack 4:
#2 Randy Johnson Giants
#137 Aaron Cunningham Athletics
#176 HM Elevator invented
#751 20th Anniversary Michael Jordan
#FM-RUH Marlins Franchise Members Green
Pack 5:
#60 Carlos Beltran Mets
#98 Alex Rios Blue Jays
#124 Lou Marson Phillies
#184 HM Brooklyn Bridge Completed
#197 HM Republican Party Founded
Pack 6:
#44 Mark Teixeria Yankees
#76 Adrian Gonzalez Padres
#103 Josh Roenicke Reds
#177 HM Microwave Oven Invented
#193 HM Voyager 2 Records Neptune Green 106/150
Pack 7:
#34 Magglio Ordonez Tigers
#50 Clayton Kershaw Dodgers
#82 Felix Hernandez Mariners
#112 Luis Cruz Pirates
#170 HM Hollywood Sign Debuts Red
34 cards
22 base cards
9 Historic Moments: 1 red and 1 green
1 Franchise members: green
1 memorabilia
1 20th Anniversary
My verdict: I like the Historical moments cards, in particular the black and white photography. The grey tombstone look works well on these cards but not neccesarily on the player cards. Still not sure I see the point of the different coloured backgrounds. The Hollywood sign card has to be up there in the 'most boring card ever produced' category.
As always cards are available for trade.

One of the best days ever and 2009 Goudey

When I arrived at work this morning, I found laying on my desk on top of a pile of papers this jumbo pack of 2009 Goudey, a jumbo 2009 Upper Deck Series 1 and a jumbo 2009 Upper Deck Series 2.
I had just returned from a two week break and one of the teachers from school went on a holiday to Florida. I had know this since about January and pretty much reminded her daily to bring back 'anything baseball 2009'.
I was very excited to see these packs deliberately placed for easy recognition. As packs, any packs, are a rare commodity in the UK unless you purchase them from the US and get diddled on the postage (and more often than not on customs charges). So this fantastic looking pack blew me away.
I went to thank her and walked into her office. "I have something for you!" she said and revealed from a plastic bag a blaster of 2009 Goudey and blaster of 2009 Artifacts plus some US Simpsons stamps.
This is the best day ever!
Wow thanks. Thanks too for the cards on my table. Wait a minute. Not from you? Then Who?
To cut a long boring story short, unbeknownst to me another teacher also went on a holiday to the US. She had heard me harp on so much about baseball cards, when she saw these in a shop she thought I might like them. She wasn't wrong. I may be a pain in the arse but it does pay dividends.

Besides the cards being on my desk there was also a pile of telephone messages, letters and assorted random paper work that had accumulated in my absence. Unfortunately the cards had to wait. Well sort of. I opened this package of Goudey a little too over eagerly before I even went to thank to purchaser.
And who should rise from the bequest?
None other than Jacoby Ellsbury. This was going to be a wonderful day.
The other 15 cards from the pack were:
#2 Max Scherzer D-backs
#26 Michael Bowden Red Sox
#52 Brandon Phillips Reds
#50 Alexei Ramirez White Sox
#76 Josh Willingham Nationals
#86 Chone Figgins Angels
#88 Jered Weaver Angels
#107 Mat Gamel Brewers
#121 Kevin Slowey Twins
#133 Phil Coke Yankees
#143 Johnny Damon Yankees
#158 Shane Victorino Phillies
#167 Chris Young Padres
#181 Bob Gibson Cardinals
#191 Michael Young Rangers
plus #28 Jacoby Ellsbury Red Sox
I collected the whole 2008 Goudey set and thought about collecting the 2009 set as well, however I think I will wait to see what the verdict on the Goodwins Champion set is and then decide.
Haven't had a chance to opened the other packs yet but will post them in Pursuit of Red Sox when I do.
As to the rest of the day? It all went in a Goudey blur.

2009 Upper Deck First Pitch baseball

I purchased the blaster of Upper Deck First Edition before I had arranged a trade with Charles from Blue Jays Cards. He sent me the entire set of Red Sox, bar one card. So there was only SQ-7, the Dice-K Star Quest I needed.
There are 300 cards in the set.
There are 25 Star Quest cards.
That is it. No jersey, auto or short prints. A simple set and if you bought a box of 36 packets you could (theoretically) get the whole set. This would include the Star Quest, as there is one per pack. This was, I presume UD's answer to Topps Attax.
There are 10 cards per pack, 1 being a Star Quest foil. There are 10 packs in the blaster box.

SQ-23 Ryan Braun Brewers

Unbelievable....13 Red Sox from 10 packs, over 1 per pack. That is staggering and a little sad considering that I only needed 1 card from the entire Red Sox run. It is also what we call 'Sod's Law' in the UK.
There was a surprise, a hockey card from the UD 20th anniversary set.
