Sennheiser Electronics Corporation e 602 II
Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
The e 602 II is a large-diaphragm dynamic mic designed for bass instruments such as kick drum, floor tom, bass cab, and tuba. It is the revision to Sennheiser’s original e602.
Both versions are Cardioid dynamics with a “mid-scoop” EQ curve, intended for bass instrument reproduction. The primary differences between the two models are summarized below:
e 602 | e 602 II | |
Weight: | 550g | 318g |
Impedance: | 250Ω | 350Ω |
HF boost: | +8dB, 2–15kHz | +16dB, 5.5–12kHz |
LF Peak: | 80Hz | 60Hz |
The lighter weight is due to the use of an aluminum body; the change was intentional, to make the mic easier to mount at the end of a boom arm reaching into a kick drum.
The II presents a much deeper mid-frequency scoop than does the original mic, with a narrower and higher-amplitude HF boost. The low-frequency boost in the II is, conversely, broader, with deeper LF extension.
Both versions of the microphone are only nominally Cardioid; in both cases, the polar pattern becomes omnidirectional at low frequencies. The rear rejection on the original e602 is somewhat better than on the II, although when placed inside a kick drum this should not affect performance in any meaningful way.
Both mics have an integrated stand mount. Both use a humbucking coil to reduce EMI/RFI noise.
Electronic Musicician 2011
I christened the E602 the Great Equalizer (pun intended) due to its predictable, instantly identifiable response that coaxes from every drum a quite similar, over-the-top sound. The E602’s preponderance of lows largely obscures midrange shell tone, minimizing the distinctive voice of each drum in favor of a singular, killer tone. That’s not a bad thing if it’s consistency and reliability you’re after.
