HAIKU in Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 11-04-07

The prompt this week at One Deep Breath is loneliness. These are some of haiku I wrote on the train to and from Saranac Lake in upstate New York, where I visited a retirement residence I'm interested in for myself.

wild fall leaves empty golf carts on the green

* * * *

no trespass sign
the wind pesters
flame leafed trees

* * * *

lowering clouds
held up by scraps of blue
distant mountains

* * * *

a fiery tree
alone in the greensward
one man leaves the train

* * * *

And here's one that addresses loneliness in it's more enjoyable aspect (at least that's what I projected on to that seagull!):

outpaced by the train
a seagull skimming
the placid lake

TAIGA: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 10-07-07

The Hanged Man, XII, in The Taiga Tarot,
a deck-in-progress by Patricia Kelly

The prompt this week at One Deep Breath is “simple pleasures.” I can think of nothing more pleasurable or ultimately more simple than being fully in the moment, something I nevertheless find hard to do. The past agitates and the future rains fear. But every once in a while? A moment like the one above that I speak to in The Hanged Man taiga.

By the way, taiga are illustrated tanka; and The Taiga Tarot is a Tarot deck I am slowly designing. To read more about this Hanged Man taiga and to see other cards from this deck-in-progress, click on Roswila’s Taiga Tarot at the bottom of this post.

HAIGA in Reponse to One Deep Breath Prompt of 9-30-07

The prompt this week at One Deep Breath is "snips and snails (boyhood)." The haiga above doesn't say "boy" but it was a boy I saw running way too close to those boxes! :-)

HAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 9-23-07

wide open door
the fly suicides in my orange juice

The prompt this week at One Deep Breath is "juicy." This two line haiku was prompted by the juicy end to a last fly of summer. It was a bit frustrating (probably a bit more for the fly :-D) as I did keep trying to shoo it out the dang door! Then when I noticed I was no longer being annoyed by its dive bombing and buzzing, I discovered why.

Be sure to visit One Deep Breath (link above) and check the comments, which have links to the rich variety of responses to this prompt.

HAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 9-18-07

CLAIRVOYANT CHARM DUST

eye of newt, bat's tongue
dessicated and powdered
sprinkle liberally

'tis soon to be the season! (Cackle, cackle...) The prompt on One Deep Breath this week is to write a recipe, and use a title if we wish. Since food is an area of my life fraught with difficulty I decided to take a different tack on "recipe..." And since I'm a Pagan, it is thoroughly fitting, as well. :-D

HAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Promt of 9-10-07

slow train
the shaft of sunlight on my neck

The prompt this week at One Deep Breath is “simplicity.” This haiku is about an old memory, from when I was still working and commuting. Not only was it a lovely experience for what was very often a tense subway ride, but it was one of the simplest and at the same time most profound moments of my entire life.

One Deep Breath is now having us post our haiku and/or our permalinks in their comments. So when you visit (link above), you will need to check the comments to their “simplicity” prompt to enjoy others responses for this week.

HAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 9-3-07

my cat teaches
our tiny new housemate
I, proud grandmother

The prompt for this week at One Deep Breath is "grandparents." You can visit during the week to enjoy others' reponses to this prompt. (On reading the first several responses posted, I was very touched. They are references to real grandparents. Forgive this old -- nearing 64 --writer her quirks. I went with my immediate association to the prompt, which did take me a bit far afield, I'm afraid.)

I had a dream last night that gave me some important insights that was couched in cat imagery. On reading this prompt I was therefore predisposed to recall an incident that made me both laugh and kvell (yiddish for beam with pride). I had carefully taught (yes, they can be taught ... sometimes :-D) a cat named Solace not to play with the items on our coffeetable. When we got a new kitten, who I swear was no bigger than a cigarette package, Solace took him "under her wing." I watched one time as she taught Dreyfuss not to touch those coffeetable items. Each time Dreyfuss would reach for one of them, she'd very lightly, barely touching him, box his ears! LOL! He finally got the message. I felt just like a proud grandparent. I must admit I always had to dust plenty of cat hair off that table. But as long as they didn't knock them off and play hockey with them when we weren't around, I was purrrrr-fectly content.

DREAMKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 8/28/07

eclipsed moon

touches my heart

The above is a dreamku, based on an old dream I had under a lunar eclipse. The dream was brought to mind by One Deep Breath's prompt this week of "tiny pretty things," combined with the fact we had a lunar eclipse last night. (Posted also to Summer Haiku 2007.)

HAIKU in Reponse to One Deep Breath's Prompt of 7-16-07

I diaper that slow
toilet leak again
slower plumber

This week's prompt at One Deep Breath is "bodies of water." Yeah, I know a leak may not seem like a body of water to a normal person. But when you have badly arthritic knees and nearly couldn't get up off the floor after trying to turn off the water to the toilet (the handle was totally jammed), any leak at all seems like a tsunami! And believe me, it brought back memories of diapering when I'd wrap my old towels and cloths around that thing's smooth rounded foot. LOL!

DREAMKU in Response to One Deep Breath's Prompt of 7/9/07

stormy night
my father tenderly cares
for the ailing bird

One Deep Breath's prompt this week is about "feathered friends." The above is a dreamku. The collage is one I did on the cover of an all-purpose daily journal I keep, which often references my dreams, too, of course. (Though dreamku themselves I keep in separate notebooks dedicated solely to them.)

The dream this dreamku is based on was a watershed one. It was years after my father's death before I had a neutral-toned, much less positive dream involving him. We'd had a rather conflicted relationship, shall I say, when he was alive. Fortunately, I was given the grace to work through a lot of it inside myself over the years.

To see how others feather their creative nests, visit One Deep Breath (link above). And if you want to read more about dreamku links to A DREAMKU PRIMER are above, right below A DAILY DREAMKU.

HAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 7/3/07

bright summer day
we squint to read our poems
in the dingy bar

This week's prompt at One Deep Breath is to think about light/shadow. The haiku above is based on memories of many a sunny afternoon poetry reading in a shadowy bar in Greenwich Village, New York City (a sort of artsy, "bohemian" area of town). Great fun, but hard on these aging eyes. Especially when the light outside was so bright by comparison. :-) The collage above is one I did on the cover of my first dreamku notebook.

Give One Deep Breath (link above) a visit to see what you can by others' lights and shadows.

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY, ONE DEEP BREATH!

overcast the grass more brilliant

As the title says this is One Deep Breath's first anniversary. I posted the above one-line haiku of mine to say that my own writing life (and I am sure that of many others) has been made brighter by their weekly prompts (and those who respond to it). Many thanks!

[The above photo is one I took many years ago of a 150 year old weeping beech tree, here in Queens, New York. "All weeping beech trees in the USA are descended from this one. Though it died and was cut down in 1998, its daughters are still found fronting its remains." (quote from online article by Bridge and Tunnel Club)]

DREAMKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 4/30/07

the whirling seal
from beneath the frozen sea
joy or insanity

The above is what I am now terming a "dreamku." I.e., a haiku-inspired form about night dreams. This is a very old dream that I wrote a lengthy poem about years ago and just recently tried revising, to no good result. When I saw today's One Deep Breath prompt to create something on a "sea" theme I immedately saw the seal in the sea of this old dream.

SCIFAIKU: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt for 4/23/07

an unopened
braille book by the crater
memories of earthrise

One Deep Breath's prompt this week is to consider Earth Day. The piece above is a scifaiku, a haiku inspired form with science fiction/fantasy/horror themes. In the case of this scifaiku it may not be one for much longer. Humans have stood on the moon and looked at earthrise. However, I don't believe a blind person has yet had the joy of remembering earthrise from beside a moon-crater. :-) May we all remember our earth's many beauties and joys, and treat Her accordingly.

TANKA: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 4/16/07

knees weakened
by the horrendous news
of the massacre:
the instinct
to pray

One Deep Breath's prompt this week is to think about the potential energy (or lack thereof) around/in us. The horrible tragedy at Virginia Tech University early this Monday morning is much with me, as it is with us all. When I heard the news report, I could barely stand before my T.V., weak and stunned. My prayers are with all those effected by this terrible tragedy.

P.S. A few hours after posting the above I began to wonder why the reports of deaths in Iraq do not impact me in quite the same way. Not that I am not deeply saddened by them. I am. But is it the level of awful familiarity that buffers those statistics? I have no answer. Only the painful question.

DREAM HAIGA: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 3/19/07

[breath stopping//the Pegasus lands//before me]

This week's prompt at One Deep breath is to think about breath/breathing, or simply to do it and see what happens. :-)

The above haiku is based on a very old dream. The drawing -- done with paint and pens, I believe -- is by a dear friend, Janet, who is now deceased. Just as this dream sight (metaphorically) stopped my breath so, too, did the news of her sudden, way too young, and totally unexpected passing. She gave me this Pegasus drawing (and one other) at a time in my life when I had a website for dreams, poetry and Tarot that I called "Pegasus Dreaming." I thought of the dream on which the haiku is based as I'd just been preparing to do a post in her memory, including the other drawing. I have had the other drawing up in my home since she gave it to me. It serves as a reminder of her generous spirit. Now that it's scanned, it will be going right back up.

You can visit One Deep Breath for links to others' varied and creative responses to this prompt.
