Baby bookcase

Today I have a little break from autumn cards -- a cute (in my opinion!) baby card. I don't have the opportunity to make too many baby cards, so I was excited to create one for a coworker's baby shower last week.

I used the retired Bookcase Builder stamp set from Stampin' Up!, and I love choosing which images to include and how to arrange them on the shelves. For my colors, I used Toffee (Taylored Expressions) as the main neutral and added in pink, yellow, green, and blue -- pretty traditional baby colors, but I chose darker, more saturated shades than the usual pastels.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to add a sentiment to the front of the card, but I found a tiny "congratulations," and I thought it fit perfectly tucked under the bottom shelf. I added a die-cut scalloped frame around the stamped images, and I layered the frame; I die cut a white frame and a Toffee frame and glued them together to create just a bit of dimension. The finishing touch was a few clear droplets.

Party pets

The past year or so I've been trying to be more thoughtful in my craft purchases, partly because of my budget and partly because I still have a good number of stamp sets that haven't ever seen ink. The stamp set I used for today's cards, from the June 2021 My Monthly Hero kit from Hero Arts, was one of those sets. But not any more! I made four cards featuring some cute cats and dogs that are definitely ready for a party.

To start these cards, I stamped and die-cut a whole bunch of cats, dogs, presents, and balloons that I colored with Prismacolor pencils and blended with Gamsol. I am not an expert color-er, so I stuck to basically one color for each of the animals, with the exception of some stripes on the yellow kitties. For the accessories, I used the same pallet of five colors so I could mix and match all the pieces when deciding on my layouts.

These first two cards have similar layouts, and I love how the scalloped rectangle adds to the playful feeling. For the card on the left I placed a small piece of foam tape behind each balloon and then used a tiny drop of glue at the end of each string. For the card on the right I used a few smaller stamps from the set to create a tone-on-tone background.

For the next card, I used cloud stencils (Taylored Expressions) and blending brushes to make a sky full of fluffy clouds on a white card base. I attached the dog and balloon bunch with foam tape and glued the individual balloons directly to the card base. For the last card I used two cat images so I could include the sentiment "sending birthday whiskers," which makes me smile. I used a confetti embossing folder (Taylored Expressions) to add texture to the background, although I had to use the embossing folder upside down because I had a top-folding card base. This way it just looks like the confetti is  piling up on the ground!

I did want to share the inside of the balloon card. I had planned to stamp the sentiment directly inside the card, but I smeared the ink. Instead of covering it with another plain panel, I decided to ink blend some clouds above and below the stamped sentiment. I love how it turned out, and I think it makes the inside a little more fun.

If you have stamp sets you haven't used, I challenge you to pull one out the next time you make a card. Thanks for stopping by!

I'm back!

Well, hello there! It's hard to believe that I haven't posted on my blog for almost two months. Since then, we've closed on our house, moved, and are working on getting settled and discovering the ins and outs of being homeowners. It's been about a month since we moved in, but we still haven't finished unpacking. We took care of what we really needed -- kitchen, bedrooms, craft room (of course!), etc. -- and then lost our "oomph." Part of the problem is that we need some furniture in order to finish getting settled, but with all the production/delivery issues and delays right now, a lot of things are out of stock and on back order. We found a sofa we liked that wouldn't be delivered until January or February! Oof. I'd thought we'd be all ready for the holidays, but now I'm not sure. So it's been a slow process.

But enough about the boring stuff. I have actually made a few cards in my new craft room! And here are the first two:

Supplies (all Stampin' Up! unless otherwise noted):
Stamps: Thankful Forest Friends, Tree Rings, Sentimental: Birthday (Winnie & Walter)
Paper: Cinnamon Cider, Very Vanilla, Chocolate Chip card stock
Ink: Cinnamon Cider, Old Olive, Chocolate Chip, Gray Granite
Accessories: happy Birthday die (Simon Says Stamp), Ornate Layers dies, jute twine (May Arts Ribbon), Into the Woods elements, Box of Chocolate sequin assortment (Craft Medley), foam tape (3M), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

One of my cousins has twins (a girl and a boy) who celebrated their fourth birthday this month, and I wanted to make cards using a stamp set that wasn't specifically for birthdays. I chose this autumn/Thanksgiving set because I think these animals are adorable and look like storybook characters. Using different dies and accessories, I made one card a little more feminine, and one card a little more boyish. For the card with all the animals, I had to cut out the images by hand -- and I think I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. :)

Inside the "boy" card I simply added a layer of Very Vanilla card stock stamped with a birthday sentiment. But in the "girl" card I added a small stamped branch in each corner to tie in the images on the front of the card.

It felt like I had to retrain my crafty muscles a bit while I was making these cards, and now I'm working on my blogging muscles. I'm still not exactly sure how much I will be blogging going forward. I like having a record of the cards I've made and being able to search for a specific stamp set or technique. But finding the time and energy to do all the steps (take and download pictures, resize/edit them, write the post, etc.) isn't the easiest right now. So I may try out some different ideas, like maybe just posting pictures and supplies without much text. Or maybe a weekly round-up of whatever I've made that week. We'll see what happens.

Thanks so much for sticking around and stopping by today!

A nod to the Muppets

Happy Friday! We're due for a storm tonight, and the sky is already getting dark, so I thought I'd bring a little color -- and nostalgia -- to this gloomy evening.

Supplies (all Taylored Expressions unless otherwise noted):
Stamps: Mini Strips - Fun and Funny, Whole Llama Love
Paper: Whisper White, Basic Black card stock (Stampin' Up!); Cookie Monster, Lime Zest, Pineapple, Plum Punch, Candy Corn card stock
Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black (Tsukineko)
Accessories: Build-a-Scene - Trees dies, Frame in Frame 2 Cutting Plate, Splatter embossing folder, Brick embossing folder, 3/8" circle punch (Stampin' Up!), googly eyes (Inkadinkadoo), Brights Candy Dots (Stampin' Up!), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), foam tape (3M)

Almost exactly three years ago, I shared a card featuring these characters that remind me so much of the Muppets. I loved watching The Muppet Show on TV as a kid, and one of my all-time favorite Christmas albums is John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together. I still listen to it multiple times every year, and since we have an Amazon Echo I can ask Alexa to play it whenever, and I don't have to dig out the CD. :)

But back to the card. I used six of the different treetop dies from the Build-a-Scene - Trees die set and chose six fun, bright card stock colors. I cut a few of each shape from each color of card stock and then mixed and matched them to create the heads and hair. (That sounds much simpler than it was; I kept moving around pieces, and I changed my mind I don't know how many times before I finally glued everything together.) I added googly eyes, and for the mouths, I punched 3/8" black circles and then cut them in half. For a few of the characters I also added Candy Dots for their noses.

The card bases are pretty straightforward. I embossed four card bases (two with a splatter texture and two with a brick wall texture) and then added a scalloped frame. (For the Lime Zest card base, I stamped the sentiment on a strip of white card stock and adhered that to the card base before adding the frame.) Using foam tape I added four faces in each frame and then finished with the sentiments. No need for extra embellishments with these fun characters!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for stopping by!

Making cards with stickers

Earlier this summer I found a new-to-me company called JD+Brooklyn, which specializes in diverse stickers for planners or journals. I have not gotten into the planner culture, but while I was browsing all the awesome sticker designs, I found several sets that I thought would be really fun for card-making, including fairies, ice cream treats, cute little animals dressed like pirates, and fun pandas. I haven't had a chance to use all of them yet, but I do have a few cards to share with the fairies and ice cream treats.

Supplies:
Stamps: Pure Magic (Essentials by Ellen), Twinkle Twinkle Background (Taylored Expressions), December 2018 My Monthly Hero kit (Hero Arts)
Paper: Whisper White, thick Whisper White, Basic Black, Gorgeous Grape card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: VersaMark, Memento Tuxedo Black (Tsukineko); journaling pen (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Fairy stickers (JD+Brooklyn), Frost White shimmer paint (Tsukineko), Opaque Bright White embossing powder (WOW!), Layering Squares dies (Stampin' Up!), Princess sequins (Craft Medley), Moonshine confetti (Hero Arts), Corner Chomper (We R Memory Keepers), sponge dauber (Stampin' Up!), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), foam tape (3M)

I love these little fairies sitting on the mushroom houses, and they are perfect for the magic- and fairy-related sentiment stamps I have. For the purple card, I adhered the largest sticker to a square of white card stock, matted it with a black scalloped square, and then set it aside while I made the card base. I wanted a magical-looking background, so I applied Frost White shimmer paint to the Twinkle Twinkle Background stamp and then stamped it on a purple card base. When the shimmer paint was dry, I stamped the sentiment near the bottom of the card with VersaMark ink and embossed it with white embossing powder. I added the focal panel with foam tape and scattered some purple sequins to finish the card.

I wanted to do something different for the second card, so I went the clean-and-simple route. Using a thick white card base, I stamped the sentiment near the lower right corner and adhered the sticker above the sentiment. Then I used a journaling marker to draw a whimsical border around the whole card. For a little embellishment, I added some sparkly Moonshine confetti. I wasn't sure how this card would turn out, but I actually think it's my favorite of the two!

Supplies:
Stamps: Here's the Scoop (Concord & 9th)
Paper: Crumb Cake, Whisper White, Bermuda Bay, Lovely Lipstick, Gorgeous Grape card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black (Tsukineko)
Accessories: Stickers (JD+Brooklyn), Here's the Scoop dies (Concord & 9th), Layering Circles and Stitched Shapes dies, Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!)

This sticker sheet had four rows of the same six stickers, so I decided to use one row per card and then add the extra stickers inside the cards. These images worked perfectly for a grid layout, so I die cut eighteen small stitched white circles and added stickers on them. Then I matted those circles with scalloped circles in coordinating card stock colors and adhered six circles to each Crumb Cake card base. To add a sentiment, I stamped a perfect "You're so sweet" on little die-cut banners and used Dimensionals to add one to each card.

Inside the cards I added a white panel stamped with a big "Happy Birthday!" sentiment and two more stickers in the bottom right corner.

I also want to add that I had a great customer service experience with JD+Brooklyn. After my order initially shipped, I waited awhile, but it never arrived. The tracking info for the order never even updated, so it must have been stuck somewhere. But the company re-sent my order, and I received that one just fine. Yay! So check them out if you're looking for some fun stickers for your planner or journal -- or for making cards!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Blue and yellow baptism card

I've mentioned before that religious cards are not my forte, so I always struggle a bit when I have to make a card for a religious occasion. I usually try to use a stamped or die-cut cross as the focal point, which is what I did for my cousin's baptism in February. This time I combined the cross with some blue and yellow patterned papers in a design that would also work as an Easter card.

Supplies:
Stamps: Crosses of Hope (Stampin' Up!)
Paper: 80lb Natural card stock (Cougar), Summer 6" x 6" bundle (Authentique)
Ink: VersaMark (Tsukineko), Island Indigo (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Square Flip-Its #2 dies (Sizzix), Nested Square X-Stitch dies (Rubbernecker Stamps), Pinewood Planks embossing folder (Stampin' Up!), gold embossing powder (Stampin' Up!), Share What You Love Artisan Pearls (Stampin' Up!), Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!), sanding block (Close to My Heart)

I haven't used my Flip-Its dies very often, but they were perfect for this card. The center square was just the right size to highlight the cross, and the flip side of the center square was just enough space to stamp/write a short sentiment.

I cut the card base out of a cream card stock. For the sides of the card, I chose two paper from a coordinating pack and used the layering dies from the die set to cut out the pieces. The blue piece on the right side seemed too plain, though, so I embossed it with the Pinewood Planks embossing folder and lightly sanded the top to add some texture.

I discovered that one of the dies in a set of nested cross-stitch border dies was the perfect size to fit the center of the card. I used that die to cut out a layer of yellow paper and adhered it to the card base. I stamped the cross on light blue paper, embossed it with gold embossing powder, and cut it out by hand. I stamped "God bless you" on the reverse side of the center square and then used Dimensionals to attach cross to the front of the square. To finish the card I added three tiny yellow pearls near the upper right corner of the card.

Thanks for stopping by today! I did manage to make a couple of birthday cards today, so I hope that's a good sign, and maybe next time I'll be able to create a few more. Stay safe and be well!

Animal antics

I'm back with another group of cards from 2019, and this bunch is all about the animals. (Most of these are also birthday cards because that seems to be what I always need.)

Halloween parade (of cards)

Happy Halloween! I don't always make a lot of Halloween cards; usually just enough to send to a few friends and family members. But this year I decided to make extra so I could also send cards to my young cousins. (I even mailed them all separately so they each got their own piece of mail to open. It was always so fun getting something actually addressed to me when I was a kid.) I got them all mailed last week, and I was hoping to post them on my blog before Halloween. But October is a busy month for me, so here we are. While it's a little late for this year, maybe they will give you an idea or two to tuck away for next Halloween.
