The Hot Seat

Whoever invented heated seats?  It is a great idea.  However, by the time I notice that they are hot, it feels like my butt is burning off.  Random?  Not really...I went to the dentist today, and they had gotten new dental chairs...that are heated...and massage.  Wow.  Now I was impressed.

I had no cavities.  They also made me feel really old.  They said I had good healthy teeth and gums.  And that I probably would never have to have dentures.  Really?  DENTURES?  I'm 30.  That just made me feel old.

Yay!  No cavities!  The hygienist always says, "I see more plaque on three year olds."  She has clearly not tried regularly brushing  a 3 year old's teeth.  Clearly, children will be behave better at the dentist too!

Dentist Visit

This morning, Claire and I had our standard 6 month check-ups at the Dentist. I've taken her with me several times already. She's been at about 12, 18, and 24 months. And now today! She doesn't have any of her 2 year-old molars, and they aren't peeking though at all. I guess most kids have them already, but the dentist said that it's a good thing. It's easy to take care of teeth that aren't through the gums yet. :) This means she'll probably be getting her set of permanent teeth closer to 7 vs. 6 like most kids. I am not looking forward to any fussy days/nights when those 4 teeth cut through the gums, but at least now she can tell me if her mouth or teeth hurt.

She was really good and sat on my lap or played on a chair next to me while I got my teeth cleaned. Then the dentist checked my teeth and hers. I really like our dentist and they let her pick if she wanted to sit in the chair alone or have me hold her. Of course she wanted me to hold her. So they laid the chair back with her head on my shoulder, and she actually opened her mouth and totally cooperated. I was actually pretty surprised given our encounter with being afraid of Santa at the mall this past Saturday. But I guess it was sort of different and maybe she remembers the other visits.

When we go back in 6 months they said she'll be ready for her first cleaning at 3! Sometimes it depends on the cooperation level of the kid, but I think she'll be ready and has never minded when I brush/floss her teeth. She does have some "minor staining" since she loves that dark purple natural grape juice, but it's nothing to worry about. So we are both cavity free. Crazy that by our next visit I'll have another little boy to bring along! ACK! The hygienist always says that she's seen more plaque on 3 year olds when she does my teeth, but I think she must say that to everyone, because she says it every time I'm there.

She was excited to pick out a Hello Kitty sticker and a nice new orange crayon toothbrush. It's awesome that kids can get so excited about the smallest things. I celebrated my cavity free visit by treating myself to a car wash on this sunny day.

First Visit to the Dentist

Claire had her first dental check-up! She has 10 teeth. She has all 4 of her 1-year old molars, plus the basic 4 that all babies get first (2 bottom and 2 top middle ones), and she has her top 2 eye teeth.
Neither Claire nor I have any cavities. Yay for daily brushings and flossing. Yes, I am crazy for flossing her teeth, but I do it. I don't want her to get cavities. I just tagged her on the end of my 6 month appointment. They didn't really do anything as far as cleaning goes...right...clean a babies' teeth...good luck with that if you're not the parent!
She had a blast and entertained all the office staffers. My hygienist seemed a little bit of a dumbass. She was telling me not to breastfeed her to sleep, or feed her b-milk at night because it can cause bottle mouth. Because it's the same as formula or juice. "And she's seen it." Right. Ok.
Um, that's one of the beautiful benefits of breastfeeding...it's the perfect, ideal, and natural way to put your baby to sleep. As a matter of fact, I don't know how I'd ever put her to sleep if she weans before the age of ... I don't know!
I told her I'd be interested to see a pamphlet or booklet that said such, but she failed to produce any such literature of course. ;)
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/tooth-decay.html That's a good read. Basically, don't share your silverware with you baby, brush their teeth or gums daily (maybe even twice daily!), and floss once there are 2 teeth next to each other, and that should help. I was reading that some kids are genetically more susceptible to tooth decay which would suck! I have only had one teeny filling in my adult set of teeth and hope to keep it that way.
Knock on some wooden teeth!
There is so much High Fructose Corn Syrup in everything...it's ridiculous. You can hardly find good food without it!
