Unlike my ancient predecessor, this Tullius hasn't had his hands chopped off. With hands attached I offer my thoughts on philosophy, religion, politics, and whatever else I find worth mentioning. I'm conservative religiously and politically (with libertarian leanings). I value reason and freedom but also traditions and "Oldthink." I relish being on the wrong side of history when history is wrong--part of a philosopher's job is to be unpopular. (Views given here may not represent my employers')

Eye for an Eye: Whole World Blind?
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. But pacifism makes the whole world full of bad guys and corpses of good guys. Better blind than dead.
Of course there's a via media which I've alluded to before.

More Philosophy Sayings
Here.
- We have to be realistic about how realistic we can be.
- The unlived life is not worth examining.
- The statue and the clay, one, and yet not one.
- Act so as to make the world the way you ought to want it to be.
- Those who can, do; those who can't, teach. I teach ethics.
- Coercive paternalism: it's not as bad as it sounds.
- A Philosopher is someone who worries that what works in practice will not work in theory.

"Oh, you're a philosopher. What is one of your sayings?"
Occasionally the dreaded small talk arises and I am asked what it is that I do by someone I do not know. I usually try to avoid having this question come up because it almost always leads to awkward silence, or even more awkward small talk, or friendly abuse. So if I can't get away with saying "I'm a father" or "I'm a teacher," I will say that "I'm a teacher; I teach philosophy classes."

Computer Generated Voicemail Saying #1
This is my first post on voicemail turned into text by a computer. I have recently been struck by the enigmatic and--dare I say--prophetic qualities of the texts I receive from a computer translating the audible voice into the risible visible. I'm not sure what to make of this, but it's at least as profound as it is disgusting (i.e., it's my kind of aphorism!)
Everybody's got messes in-the-showcase because we're all human supper.

Ecclesiastes 10:2
The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.
