How 'bout a little holiday cheer?

Reuters - The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a 3-1/2 year low last week, bolstering views the economy was gaining momentum, even though third-quarter growth was revised down.
Even though every bit of good news has to come with an "even though" attached, that's good news.

Good news from Olympia…

…via the AFL-CIO NOW blog...
Legislation before the Washington State Legislature—pushed by multinational corporations and the notorious billionaire Koch brothers—urging Congress to pass the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has died without a vote in the state Senate.
That's good. Even better…
Sen. Maralyn Chase (D-Shoreline) led opposition to SJM 8006 within the state Senate, and strong grassroots pressure was coordinated by the Washington Fair Trade Coalition (WFTC) and its member groups, including the Washington State Labor Council.
Yep, that's my own personal State Senator watching out for working folks again. Thanks, Maralyn!

From the "Some days ya' eat the bear…" file.

Good news abounds...
AFP - President Barack Obama Wednesday signed a historic law repealing a ban on gays serving openly in the military, and the Senate prepared to hand him another win by backing a new Russia nuclear deal.

Reuters - A bill to provide medical care for firefighters and other responders to the September 11, 2001 attacks passed the Senate on Wednesday after backers struck a deal to end a Senate Republican blockade of the measure.

AP - The U.S. Senate approved a new strategic nuclear arms treaty with Russia on Wednesday, handing President Barack Obama a major foreign policy victory in his drive to improve ties with Moscow and curb the spread of atomic weapons to other countries.

The Senate voted 71-26 in favor of ratification after a contentious debate that threatened traditional bipartisanship on national security affairs.
71-26? Why did that have to seem so hard?

(Yeah, that's a rhetorical question.)

Finally some good news…

…about what they're doing to my Army. Via Richard Allen Smith at Vet Voice
The Army plans to phase out all incandescent lighting within five years as one of many newly announced steps it is taking to cut energy consumption at its facilities 45 percent below 2003 levels by 2020.
****
"Energy security, sustainability and efficiency are national security imperatives," Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and the environment, said in a news release. "This policy supports the Army's global missions in a cost-effective, safe and sustainable manner that will benefit Army soldiers, families and the entire nation."
…and elsewhere...
Sgt. Sherri Gallagher of Fort Benning, was named the U.S. Army’s Soldier of the Year, the first woman to receive that honor.
Good for Sgt. Gallagher, good news for the Army.

Heck, good for news for America.

We can always use a little good news.

Darryl delivers...
...the October polls, taken as a whole, support the idea that Murray would win with a 94.5% probability in an election held now. Here is the picture...

Pretty picture, isn't it?

Pleasant? Sure...

...but not so surprising. Via Political Wire...
Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-CT) re-election effort "brought in more than $1.2 million in the second quarter of 2009, topping his first quarter fundraising total and outraising all other candidates in the race," the Hartford Courant reports.
The fact that he's raising this kind of money in the wake of some early ugliness in the polls is evidence of a rally that I expect will be reflected in future surveys.

Better that pleasant, really. It's great news for Senator Dodd and that's good news to me.

Ready for some good news?

Via Oliver...
Large majorities of Democrats and independents, and even half of Republicans, believe the president of the United States should meet with the leaders of countries that are considered enemies of the United States. Overall, 67% of Americans say this kind of diplomacy is a good idea.
Sometimes we're smarter than we look, I guess.
