Author Interview & Giveaway: Maya Banks

I’ve enjoyed several of Maya Banks’ novels so I’m truly excited to have her on the blog today to answer some of my most pressing questions! Be sure to scroll down to the bottom and enter in the rafflecopter for a chance to win a Paperback copy of three of Maya's titles: Keep Me Safe, Giving In and Taking It All!

Hi Maya! Thanks for coming onto the blog today!

Q: You have quite a few genres of romance that you write in from romantic suspense to historical romance. What is your favorite genre to write in and which one has required the most research?

I honestly don’t have a favorite. What I love MOST is the ability to write in multiple genres. It keeps me from ever writing two books in the same genre or series back to back so it keeps it fresh and exciting for me!

Q: What kind of *ahem* research did you have to do for your BDSM erotic romance series, the Surrender Trilogy?

Letting Go (Surrender Trilogy, #1)  Giving In (Surrender Trilogy, #2)  Taking It All (Surrender Trilogy, #3)

Honestly most of it is just plain common sense and being able to see both sides of the coin and imagine how people would react in certain circumstances. I don’t like taking too clinical an approach with my  books because then the stories seem sterile and a regurgitation of facts.

Q: If you could switch places with any of the characters from one of your many books, who would it be and why?

Oh goodness no I would never want to be in ANY of my characters’ shoes! I torture them relentlessly lol. I don’t like conflict or drama in MY life so I wouldn’t survive five minutes inside one of my stories haha

Q: Never Seduce a Scot is one of my all-time favorite stories.  I listened to the audio version narrated by Kirsten Porter, which was brilliant by the way!  Do you have any say in the selection of narrator for your stories?

Never Seduce a ScotSometimes I do and sometimes I don’t! It’s entirely dependent on which audio publisher is recording the books. Sometimes I’m sent several samples from various narrators and then asked which one I prefer. While others, the choice is solely up to the publisher. I did, however, choose Kirsten Porter to narrate my Scottish historicals. I thought she had a fabulous voice.

Q: What inspired you to write your latest paranormal romantic suspense series, Slow Burn?

Keep Me Safe (Slow Burn, #1)  In His Keeping (Slow Burn, #2)  Safe at Last (Slow Burn, #3)

Honestly this has been a series that has lived in my head for YEARS, particularly the first and third stories in the series. The stories literally just popped into my head randomly and then I couldn’t stop thinking about them!

Q: There are a lot of creepy elements in KeepMe Safe (Slow Burn #1) such as serial killers and physic abilities. Did you base any of that on real life cases?

Not real life, no. Not the psychic part anyway. I’m addicted to crime shows, though, and I find them fascinating and so it was easy to imagine certain elements of the story.

Q: You are a prolific writer. I’m amazed at the amount of books you’ve written and are working on now!  How long does it usually take you to write a book, and how does your typical writing day play out?

It varies. I’ve written a shorter novel in as little as two weeks. More typically it takes 4-6 weeks for the 100k + stories but I put in a LOT of hours a day and a lot of words so it’s not really as hard as it may appear.

I try to meet a certain word count per day and in doing so it makes finishing the book in a relatively short period of time quite possible.

Q: I see you’ll be touring in Australia soon, which sounds lovely! Do you travel a lot for book events?

My “work” travel has picked up significantly in the last few years. I’ve been to some amazing places and am fortunate to have such wonderful readers who make it possible for me to not only have a career I LOVE but also to travel to some awesome places.

Q: When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?

I love hanging out with my family and taking spur of the moment trips. Like literally deciding a day before hand, hey let’s go here! We also really love to hunt and fish or just have quiet family time at home with everybody.

Q: What kind of books do you read for fun?  Favorite author?  Last book you read?

I honestly can’t tell you what the last book I read was :(  It’s been too long since I got the OPPORTUNITY to read for fun! But most often when I DO get a spare moment I typically indulge in a re-read of old favorites. I call them my comfort reads. They are stories I know won’t disappoint me!

Some of my favorite comfort read authors are Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole, Julie Garwood, Christine Feehan, Sharon Sala, and Elizabeth Lowell just to name a few.

Thanks again, Maya, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer my questions!!

Review & Giveaway: Keep Me Safe by Maya Banks

Publication Date: October 7th 2014 by William Morrow Paperbacks
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks

About the book:

A sizzling story of a woman who risks her life and her heart to find a wealthy man’s missing sister—the first novel in a sexy new romantic suspense series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks

When Caleb Devereaux's younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie's vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will risk everything to protect her—including his heart.

My Thoughts:
Ramie St. Clair has a special psychic gift or curse as Ramie sees it, to locate people. Unfortunately, when she uses her gift it costs her emotionally and physically because Ramie feels everything the victim does, as though it happened to her.

Caleb Devereaux is a desperate man.  His sister, Tori has been abducted by a madman and Ramie is his only hope of finding her in time.  When he finally locates Ramie, he forces his sister’s pain on her not knowing what her ability costs her, and he’s horrified by the realization. He can’t honestly say he’d do anything differently because it is his sister’s life on the line, but Caleb vows to help Ramie heal, make her whole again. The trouble is she disappears immediately after Caleb leaves to tend to his sister, and Ramie stays of the radar.

Caleb is determined to find Ramie, and has researched her fully since she took off. He feels a connection to her even just meeting her that one time.  Caleb is torn to bits over what he put her through.  So when Ramie finally materializes asking for his help and protection from a crazed serial killer, Caleb jumps at the chance to make things right and keep her safe.

I gravitate towards stories with an element of mystery and danger. Keep Me Safe was a combination of all of that with a steamy romance included! The story held an air suspense throughout and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what danger would come next.  Poor Ramie, she’d gone through countless horrifying situations after helping the police locate numerous victims. This is why she went off the grid before Caleb found her and then again after helping to locate his sister.  However, it seems her stalker has no problem finding her even with all the precautions she takes, and she just narrowly escapes him when she finally calls Caleb for help.

Caleb and Ramie’s romance was fast and intense, kind of insta-love/lust, but it didn’t bother me so much.  Caleb felt like he already knew Ramie somewhat because he researched into her life to the point of obsession, so he felt like he knew her even with only meeting once.  They have almost an uncanny connection when they’re reunited, and Caleb provides a warmth and protection that makes Ramie feel completely safe for once.  I was happy she got some normalcy and love after all she’d been through.

There was a lot of action and danger in Keep Me Safe that had me anxiously biting my nails it some parts!  Caleb and Ramie are put through the ringer in this intense conclusion.  No worries, though, the story wraps Caleb and Ramie’s romance up nicely.   The next story focuses on Beau, Caleb’s brother, next: In His Keeping. Can’t wait!

Review & Giveaway: Taking It All by Maya Banks

Publication Date: August 5th 2014 by Berkley Trade
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | iBooks

About the book:

Chessy and Tate have been married for several years. In the beginning, their relationship was everything she wanted. Passionate. All consuming. She offered her submission freely and Tate cherished her gift with a tenderness that made her feel safe. Content. Wanted. And loved beyond all measure. But as the years have gone by, Tate has become more immersed in making his business the success it has become, and Chessy has taken a back seat to his business obligations. Growing unhappier with the status of their once blissful marriage, Chessy knows that something has to give. Or they stand to lose it all

Tate loves his wife. Has always loved her. Providing for her has always been his number one priority. But lately she’s seemed unhappy, and he’s worried. Worried enough that he arranges for a night together that he hopes will reignite the fire that once burned like an inferno between them.

But a business call at the wrong time threatens everything. Chessy’s safety, his concentration, his wife’s faith in him as her husband, a man sworn to love and protect her above all else. Gutted with the realization that he’s going to lose her—has already lost her—he readies for the fight of his life. Whatever it takes, he’ll get her back. And prove to her that nothing is more important than her love. And that if she’ll allow him to prove himself one more time, he’ll take it all. Everything. But he’ll give far more back. Himself. His undying love.

My Thoughts:
Taking It All was my favorite book in the Surrender Trilogy.  I think part of the reason was the fact that Chessy and Tate were married, and I could relate to some of the heartache they went through.  A long lasting marriage is all about hanging on through the inevitable misunderstandings and heartache and hopefully, coming out closer and stronger because of it.

I knew from the last book, Giving In, Chessy and Tate’s marriage was in trouble.  It seemed Chessy was at the bottom of Tate’s list of priorities and this was breaking her heart slowly.  Tate was letting his business take over his time and life and thought nothing standing Chessy up and neglecting her over and over again. Their situation comes to a head on their anniversary, and Chessy finally tells Tate she’s had enough.  Chessy agrees to sticking things out when Tate promises to change.  As a way to make things up to her, Tate plans a night at The House, their BDSM club, but instead he puts Chessy in danger with his lack of care.  Can their marriage survive the seemingly unforgivable mistake that Tate makes?  Wow, I wasn’t sure it would be possible!

Apparently, part of the whole dominant/submissive theme is the complete care and control of your submissive and this is something Chessy craved after being a victim of neglect growing up. Tate’s needs as a dominant are fulfilled by controlling Chessy’s pleasure, lavishing attention, and providing for her.  Their particular needs and desires were perfectly suited to each other.   But Tate basically ruins that by letting his business consume all his time and attention.

The anniversary dinner was bad enough, but the scene at the BDSM club that led to something brutal that had me wanting to knee Tate in the balls!  I was completely outraged and if I were Chessy, I’m not sure I could’ve forgiven him.  He seriously had his head completely up his ass! Thankfully, groveling and more groveling happened. Tate really did put all his efforts into fixing and atoning for his utter f-up, but still….  I was glad Chessy didn’t just roll over and forgive quickly.  However, (highlight for spoiler) when she did forgive him, supposedly she completely trusted him again, and was going to completely forget the whole incident.  I find that a little hard to believe.  To me, even if you did decide to forgive something like this you wouldn’t forget so easily. It would take some time to build that trust back.   Also, this wasn’t touched on, but I don’t think I could EVER go back to that club or put myself in a similar situation again if I were Chessy!

I always find stories that involve BDSM situations fantastical, but entirely HOT! The scenes usually get me worked up like nothing else, and Taking It All was no exception!  Also, I’m not a fan of more than two people being involved in a romance; it always feels like cheating to me, so some of the situations Chessy and Tate were open to left me a little uncomfortable. Not sure if some of that would still be on the table after all that transpired, though, anyhow.  Even with these reservations, I was completely sucked into Chessy and Tate’s journey and eager for their HEA.

Taking It All brought out intense and conflicting emotions, and it ended up being my favorite in the series!

Review & Giveaway: When Day Breaks by Maya Banks

When Day Breaks (KGI #9) by Maya Banks
Publication Date: June 24th 2014 by Penguin
Purchase Links: Amazon | Kobo | Barnes & Noble | iBooks

About the book:
The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

Eden is said to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her face has graced countless magazines and her body has sold millions of dollars of clothing. But her fame and beauty has earned her more than she ever imagined. Evil is stalking her, determined to extinguish the ethereal beauty forever.

Swanson or “Swanny” as his teammates call him is always up for the next mission. He came back from Afghanistan wounded and scarred. Hardly the kind of man who even belongs in the same room with Eden. And yet there’s something about the quiet beauty that stirs his blood and makes him dream of the impossible. Because Beauty loving the beast only happens in fairy tales and KGI doesn’t deal in fairy tales. Ever.

My Thoughts:
Eden is a supermodel whose beautiful face has graced countless magazine covers.  But her life is about to be turned upside down when an attempt is made on her life which throws her into the protective arms of Swanny, and his teammates at KGI.

Swanny remembers Eden’s pictures and sweet, thoughtful letters her brother shared during their time in the military while stationed in Afghanistan.  The thought of Eden in danger brings all of his protective instincts to life.  When his team is sent in to guard her, Swanny takes point in the assignment even though he’s not technically the leader.  He just can’t help it.  Right away Eden zeroes in on him just as he’s focused on her, but he can’t fathom why.  He knows the facial scar he gained while held captive brings out pity in others, sometimes even disgust, so what could Eden, one of the most beautiful women in the world want with him?

This story is one of instant chemistry and attraction. Both Swanny and Eden felt an immediate magnetic pull between them, but both are plagued by insecurities and doubt. Both wonder if the other feels as strongly and as deeply, but that doesn’t hold them apart for long.

I truly felt for Swanny, who felt like Beast to Eden’s Beauty:

“What could I possibly have to offer you? I feel like we’re caught up in a modern Beauty and the Beast situation. I’m not handsome. Most would consider me ugly. I’m scarred not just on my face but on my entire body. How could you want someone like me?”

He went through unimaginable horrors in Afghanistan while held captive, and so it’s not only scarred him physically, but emotionally as well.  Eden doesn’t see any of the scars when she looks at Swanny. She sees a completely sexy, honorable man. Eden is just as insecure with Swanny wondering if he thinks of her only as a superficial beauty. But Swanny sees Eden’s beauty inside and out.

I really enjoyed this story and Eden and Swanny had lots of chemistry leading to some pretty hot scenes.  This was an insta-love/lust situation and it didn’t bother me, because I get that. There are times I’ve met someone, and had an instant, strong connection, and just clicked, so I can totally relate.  The only drawback for me with this story was the repetitive inner thoughts from both characters.  Even so I wouldn’t mind continuing with this series because I do adore romantic suspense.

Review & Giveaway: Giving In by Maya Banks

Giving In (Surrender Trilogy, #2)

Publication Date: May 6th 2014 by Berkley Trade
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

Kylie sees the way Jensen looks at her. The dark promise in his eyes. That rough edge of dominance she knows he possesses. But dominance is the one thing that frightens her above all else. She and her brother barely survived a childhood steeped in violence and abuse. She could never give up total control and submit to a man. Especially a man like Jensen. Could she?

Jensen sees the shadows in Kylie’s eyes. Knows he has to tread very carefully or risk losing any chance he has with her. All he wants is the opportunity to show her that dominance doesn’t equal pain, bondage or discipline. That emotional surrender is the most powerful of all, and that to submit—fully to him—will fulfill the aching void in her heart in a way nothing else ever will.

My Thoughts:
Kylie wants nothing to do with her boss, Jensen, yet he can’t seem to stay away or stop pushing her buttons.  He’s intense, and domineering, and everything that Kylie avoids in a man. She grew up with an abusive father who was intense, and she still has nightmares from his treatment.

Jensen is taken with Kylie even though she’s so prickly and abrasive with him. He knows her behavior is more of a protective mechanism, and he wants get beyond her shields.  She presents a challenge and he’s not one to back down. Jensen knows some of her history and it kills him to know that Kylie holds herself back because of it.

Giving In is categorized as a BDSM read, but I’m not sure I’d call it that.  While the first book in the series sounds like it had a dominant/submissive romance, this one did not, IMO. It’s true Jensen was a dominant, and up until Kylie he’s only had those types of relationships, but Kylie at this point would run for the hills if he tried anything like that. She’s so skittish that Jensen must forgo his tendencies, but if that means gaining Kylie’s trust it’s worth the sacrifice to him. Jensen was very sweet and all about making Kylie happy.  Even when Kylie warms to him, she still has trouble overcoming her fear, but Jensen was determined to make things work:

"You're going to have to work a hell of a lot harder than that to scare me away. You and I are inevitable, Kylie. I've accepted that. Now you have to as well."

This story was entertaining, but I have to say Jensen and Kylie’s romance didn’t knock me off my feet.  I had a hard time buying their intense connection, and it went from zero to I-can’t-be-without-you in a short amount of time.  But like I said, I did enjoy this story overall, and it was relatively free of drama that would frustrate me.

Review: Theirs to Keep by Maya Banks

Theirs to Keep (Tangled Hearts Trilogy, #1)

Theirs to Keep (Tangled Hearts Trilogy, #3) by Maya Banks
Published on October 22, 2013
About the book
When Cade Winslow and Merrick Sullivan find Elle hiding in the cabinet of a gun store, they know they can’t just walk away from the fragile woman with no memory of who she is or who tried to kill her. Merrick is training for the title shot in the heavyweight division as a mixed martial artist and can’t afford distractions, but neither can he turn his back on the woman who tugs at his heartstrings.

Elle feels safe with her two protectors, and the longer she spends with them, the more she realizes that she has no desire to remember her past. Not when it could compromise her future with Cade and Merrick.

Cade has his own set of concerns when it comes to Elle, and it quickly becomes clear to the two men that for the first time in their friendship, a woman is coming between them. But what if they just kept her there? Between them. Where she belongs.
My Thoughts:
I have a love/hate relationship with Maya Banks so I was a little scared to pick up her newest trilogy.  While this wasn't exactly what I was hoping for it was interesting and I am left wondering how certain things will play out with the addition of new characters in the sequel.  So yes I am in it for the long haul.

Theirs to Keep isn't a simple story.  This first book in the trilogy introduces us to Cade, Merrick, and Elle.  Three people whose lives are turned upside down after just one night.  Elle wakes up beaten and shot and knows she has to go somewhere safe.  She does the only thing she can think of an breaks into a store to hopefully get some sleep.  This particular store is monitored by Cade and Merrick and when they go to check out why the alarm tripped they find Elle hidden in a cabinet trying to stay safe.  This is the night that changes everything.  Both men want to make her safe, they don't care what happened in her past, they just want to make sure her future is a safe one so they take her home.  Things get interesting as you can guess after that.

The flow of the story was a little slow I won't lie. Nothing much happens other than what you would expect.  Yes they all three want each other in more ways than one and yes they do find a way to become a unit.  What makes the story grab you is Elle's background.  I am very curious about her and I want to know what her history is.  If the summary of the sequel is any indication we are in for a very bumpy ride.  I have no idea how Ms. Banks plans to iron everything out and honestly I am a little scared.

My favorite character was Merrick.  He is the MMA fighter and well I have a soft spot for any guy who is a fighter.  Cade was a great character too, but Merrick would have been the one for me.  I was glad to see him step up and not let his emotions get the better of him.  He needed to fight and I was happy that he did.

Elle needs to grow a little bit more of a backbone though.  I know that these two strong men want to take care of her, but she needs to grow up and learn to take care of herself.  Yes she has been through a very tough time, but I want her to learn from it and be stronger for herself.  I think the whole "Me man I take over" scenario is going to turn off some readers, but if you can get past that then this might work for you.  I have learned that with this authors works this is usually the case with the characters so you have to let it go.

This trilogy promises to be all kinds of craziness and I honestly wouldn't expect anything less from Maya Banks. Theirs to Keep is a good start to what I think will be an interesting series.

Review: Burn by Maya Banks

Burn (Breathless, #3)
Burn (Breathless, #3) by Maya Banks
Published on August 6, 2013 by Berkley
Purchase Amazon
About the book
Ash, Jace, and Gabe: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Ash, it’s the woman who changes everything he’s ever known about dominance and desire...

When it comes to sex, Ash McIntyre has always explored his wilder side—extreme and uncompromising. He demands control. And he prefers women who want it like that. Even the women he’s shared with his best friend, Jace.

But Jace is involved with a woman he has no intention of sharing. And now even Gabe has settled into a relationship with a woman who gives him everything he needs, leaving Ash feeling restless and unfulfilled.

Then Ash meets Josie, who seems immune to his charms and his wealth. Intrigued, he begins a relentless pursuit, determined she won’t be the one who got away. He never imagined the one woman to tell him no would be the only woman who’d ever drive him to the edge of desire.
My Thoughts:
Okay this is the book I have been waiting for!  If you have read my previous reviews of the Breathless series then you know I have a love/hate relationship with it.  The first book left me so raw and angry that I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue on and honestly if it had been more of Gabe and Mia I probably wouldn't have, but it was Jace.  I really loved Jace in Rush so I couldn't wait to get my hands on his story, but it let me down.  There were parts I liked but for the most part I was upset and unhappy with the events that took place.  Now you may be thinking why in the world did I pick up Burn??  Well for one thing I really do enjoy Ms.Banks and her writing even if I want to strangle her characters and for another thing this was Ash's story.  How could I not read it??  Out of everybody Ash intrigued me the most and I have to say his book was definitely the best out of the three.

In Burn we get to see what makes Ash tick and why he is the way he is.  I knew he was dark for some reason even though it is never said in any of the other books.  He was the most easy going of the bunch in the previous books, but if you read them then you will probably agree with me that there was just something with him that made you want to take a closer look and knew that when you did you would probably find lots of darkness.  I won't lie I was terrified to pick this one up because I didn't want to be disappointed and I was scared to see what kind of woman he be paired up with.  I am happy to say that his story turned out much better than I could ever have anticipated and overall I am a happy camper.

The story is kind of the same as the previous books.  Main male character bumps into beautiful girl and decides he wants her and will not take no for an answer.  Ash comes in with guns blazing and sweeps Josie right off of her feet.  They move quick but again this is a trend with this series so I was okay with it. Would I have liked Josie to put up a little more fight..yes, but I can appreciate the overall fairy tale feel of the story.  I mean really what woman doesn't want a handsome sex god taking charge and cherishing her??  So yes I can understand the fantasy part of this book and overlook all the things that normal woman would scream about.

Josie was a good match for Ash.  She was an artist and really all she wanted was to be loved.  She lost her mother and grandmother so she had no family until Ash came along.  He gave her friends and a life she never knew she wanted.  I think my favorite part of the whole book was the girls.  Mia, Bethany, Brittany, and Josie were a hoot and I loved their scenes together. Girlfriends are the absolute best and this was a wonderful addition to the story.

The one big point that bothered me was the villain.  I was not prepared for it to be who it was and I am not sure if it worked for me.  We get to see a really dark side of Ash in this one and his connections which for a fan of the bad boy was great so I liked that there was something that stirred this part of Ash, but I wish the overall bad guy wasn't who it turned out to be.  It's really hard to talk about this part too much since I don't want to give anything away.  I will just say that I think a certain other person would have been a better villain and the person who it turned out to be shouldn't have been in this book in my opinion.

I am so excited that I decided to read this book.  Ash was definitely worth the wait and this book has inspired me to read more from Ms.Banks!

About the book
Jace, Ash, and Gabe: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Jace, it’s a woman whose allure takes him completely by surprise...

Jace Crestwell, Ash McIntyre, and Gabe Hamilton have been best friends and successful business partners for years. They’re powerful, they’re imposing, they’re irresistibly sexy, and Jace and Ash share everything—including their women.

When they meet Bethany, Jace begins to feel things he’s never experienced before: jealousy, and a powerful obsession that threatens him, overwhelms him—and excites him beyond control.

Jace isn’t sharing Bethany—with anyone. He’s determined to be the only man in her life, and it’s jeopardizing a lifelong friendship with Ash. Bethany will be his and his alone. Even if it means turning his back on his best friend.

My Thoughts:
I have had the hardest time trying time writing this review.  On one hand I did enjoy the characters, but on the other the storyline just completely disappointed me.  I was really looking forward to Jace's story so this all came as a shock to me.

First I will start out with the good.  I really enjoyed Jace and the men we met in the first book Gabe and Ash.  These three men just embody what alpha means and as you know I enjoy alpha men. I enjoyed their scenes together and I found myself reading just to read these scenes.  Ash and Jace together was hawt.  They were everything that I hoped for after reading the first book, but it was unfortunately short lived.  From the synopsis of the book I expected way more intense scenes between the two, but I think there were only 2-3.  I wanted so many more.  So for my total overall rating I am giving one whole sun to Jace and Ash and for what they were to each other.

Now for the bad...The storyline bothered me and so did Jace's love interest Bethany.  I loved Pretty Woman the movie and while Fever isn't exactly like that movie it did have a Pretty Woman vibe so I expected to like it, but I was beyond shocked to find out that it left me very disappointed.  Bethany had a horrible childhood and the only person who helped her escape her past and save her from a dangerous situation has been using her for money and if that wasn't bad enough Jack gets into trouble and decides to give me up as collateral to guys he owes money too.  Just not a good situation right, well in swoops Jace to the rescue.  I know I know I should be loving this but it just felt so wrong.  I wanted Bethany to stand up to Jack and at the end it just felt like she wanted somebody to just take care of her.  She didn't care that she left Jack out on the streets and I know he didn't deserve sympathy, but at the time she leaves him and forgets about him we don't know what he has done so yes I felt bad for him.  Bethany just ran away from her problems and let Jace take care of them for her.  I like my heroines with more backbone than that.  This was the whole story, Jace taking care of Bethany and her problems.  They synopsis made me believe that Ash would have been a bigger problem, but the minute he sees that Jace is into Bethany he steps aside and this happens very early on.  There is no struggle, no big intense scene until the very end when Jace gets the wrong idea about a situation.  I wanted drama and heartfelt scenes between Jace and Ash!  I guess in the end I just felt cheated out of a possible great story.

Now I will say this, I had issues with the first book, but Maya Banks gave me Jace and I just had to read his story.  I read Fever and again I had major issues with it, but Maya gave me Ash and I just HAVE to read his story.  I have no idea if I will like it and all signs point to no, but there is just something about Maya's writing that will pulls you in and makes you want to see the series through.  I am hoping HOPING that Ash's story will deliver what the first two failed to do.  My other sun goes to Ash alone, he was wonderful and deserves a sun in preparation for his story.

Interview & Giveaway: Maya Banks

Today on Waves of Fiction we are proud to have Maya Banks with us again!  She is here to talk about her newest release Fever.
Fever (Breathless, #2)

1. This book is vastly different from Rush, what drew you to a character like Bethany?
I like writing different characters. Mia was pretty self-assured even if she was a little overwhelmed by Gabe. For Bethany, I wanted someone more vulnerable, someone who appealed to Jace's protective instincts and I liked exploring the disparities in their "worlds" She has a different kind of strength than Mia, and while Bethany IS vulnerable, in a lot of ways she's stronger than Mia because of all she's survived at such a young age.

2. What was it about Bethany that grabbed Jace from the get go?
At first it was just that one glance across a crowded room. That spark of something different. Interest and definite attraction. Of course once Jace learns of Bethany's circumstances, it only makes him that much more determined to provide for her and protect her.

3.At first I was under the assumption that Fever would be more about Jace and Ash coming to grips with Jace wanting Bethany to himself, but the story was much more involved than that. Was it always the plan to have Bethany be so broken and Jace be her hero?
Yes, absolutely. I knew that Bethany would be a woman who changed everything for Jace (and for Ash) and that for the first time, Jace would be faced with wanting a woman completely to himself and one he absolutely would not consider sharing with Ash.

4.I am excited to see Ash finally get his book, can you share any details about Burn?
In BURN, readers will discover what I've known all along and what I've hinted about in RUSH and FEVER. That Ash is a much darker more intense character than is shown on the surface. He's believed by many to be much more charming and laid back, softer than Gabe and Jace, but nothing could be further from the truth. :)

5.After you finish this series, what do you plan on working on next?
I have some ideas in the pipeline, but will have to work out the details. Nothing final yet. I'll definitely be working more on the KGI series as I have Donovan's story to write next. I also have the first book in the Sweet series spin off to write this fall and I will also be working on another Scottish historical.

Thanks Maya for stopping by!

Review & Interview: Rush by Maya Banks

Today on Waves of Fiction we are honored to have Maya Banks with us!  I recently had the privilege of reading RUSH, her latest novel, and after reading it I had a few questions that she was gracious enough to answer for me =)  Take a look...

Hi Maya! Thanks so much for stopping by today!
Thanks for having me! :)
1. Describe Rush in five words or less.
Emotional, forbidden romance, sexy, erotic

2.There is one scene and I know you know which one I am talking about that totally ripped my heart out. Was it difficult writing that scene and also was it just as difficult writing what happened after?
It was a very emotional scene because the hero absolutely screws up. He reacts strongly to the knowledge that he has deeper feelings for the heroine than he thought or expected. His attempt to distance himself totally backfires and before he can call a halt to something he knows is terribly wrong, it had already gone too far and he's in agony over what he did. So yeah, it was hard to write because I didn't intend for it to be a GOOD scene at all. The hero makes a very serious mistake and the rest of the book is about him making up for that, messing up again and finally proving to the heroine that she can count on him and that he loves her and wants to be with her.

3.Without giving spoilers what was your favorite scene in the book?
I love the ending when the Gabe really grovels to get Mia back :)

4.I really enjoyed reading Gabe and Mia's story and I am super excited to read Jace's story. Can you give a little glimpse into the next book FEVER?
FEVER is more emotionally intense than RUSH is (in my opinion) Jace is absolutely knocked for a loop by a woman who will change all the rules for him and Ash. His romance is angsty and rife with supercharged emotional moments as he struggles to overcome the mistakes he makes.

5.If you had to pick one song for RUSH what would it be?
I thought Glitter in the Air by Pink was appropriate for RUSH For FEVER? I had several but the one I listened to most and I thought fit the heroine, Bethany, was Titanium by Sia.

Thanks so much for stopping by Maya!  I can't wait to get my hands on FEVER and from what it sounds like it will be one bumpy ride!
Now for more about RUSH!

About the book
Gabe, Jace, and Ash: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Gabe, it’s making one particular fantasy come true with a woman who was forbidden fruit. Now she’s ripe for the picking...

When Gabe Hamilton saw Mia Crestwell walk into the ballroom for his hotel’s grand opening, he knew he was going to hell for what he had planned. After all, Mia is his best friend’s little sister. Except she’s not so little anymore. And Gabe has waited a long time to act on his desires.

Gabe has starred in Mia’s fantasies more than once, ever since she was a teenager with a huge crush on her brother’s best friend. So what if Gabe’s fourteen years older? Mia knows he’s way out of her league, but her attraction has only grown stronger with time. She’s an adult now, and there’s no reason not to act on her most secret desires.

As Gabe pulls her into his provocative world, she realizes there’s a lot she doesn’t know about him or how exacting his demands can be. Their relationship is intense and obsessive, but as they cross the line from secret sexual odyssey to something deeper, their affair runs the risk of being exposed—and vulnerable to a betrayal far more intimate than either expected.
My Thoughts:
Gabe has always wanted Mia, but he knows she is off limits.  Mia is not only his business partners younger sister but she is also a lot younger than him and from what Gabe has seen not ready for the type of relationship that he wants.  That all changes when Mia goes to a banquet for Gabe's company.  When Mia walks into the room all Gabe can see is her and he knows he has to have her.  What Gabe doesn't know is that Mia has always wanted Gabe and when she offered the opportunity to be with him she jumps on the chance.  Mia and Gabe start seeing each other in what they both consider a casual relationship but when emotions start entering the pictures things get muddy and it truly is a race to the finish to see if they can overcome all their obstacles and be together.

This story was such a head spin!  From the first scene to the end I was completely glued to the pages.  When this story first starts out it does resemble Fifty Shades of Grey but looks can be deceiving and by the third chapter Rush takes on a life of its own.  I was very pleasantly surprised by the sudden turn of events and after that third chapter I never thought of Fifty again.

Gabe is strong, very alpha, and knows what he wants which is Mia.  He stops at nothing to get her and I loved how fierce he was.  What really captivated me though was that even though he wanted Mia all to himself he still let her have a life. So many stories I read the guy is overbearing and won't let his love interest enjoy being out with her friends.  Gabe is different, when Mia lies about going out he doesn't get mad at her for going he gets mad because he worried about her and would have gladly provided transportation and security for her and her friends. His main concern was her safety and that was endearing to me.  There is one exception to this though.  Gabe goes through a "Oh my gawd I might have feelings for Mia" and when this happens he does something that I can't forgive him for.  I am still beyond mad at this man and I wasn't happy how Mia accepted him after.  It was a very emotional moment for me and I am very curious how other readers will deal with what happens.

If I take out that one scene then this book was amazing, with that scene in I have to take a star away.  The overall story was very exciting and I hoped with everything I had that Gabe and Mia would stop fighting the love they had for one another and just accept it.  Their story is filled with lots of heartache so be warned before reading.

While I enjoyed Rush I am way more excited to get my hands on Jace's story.  Jace is Mia's big brother and well we learn quite a few things about this man that have definitely piqued my interest.  I have a feeling this series is just going to get better and better!
