The system pictured at left is an 11-Watt portable solar photography system built into a custom backpack enabling traveling photographers to take pictures of residents of isolated villages in India for their mandatory government photo ID cards.

This system is currently being featured at the COMDEX Fall 2002 show in Las Vegas and was a highlight of the keynote address by Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.

"...the [system] enables the photgraphers to take and print pictures for about 50 rupees or about a dollar. The pack quickly pays for itself and becomes a sustainable business for that photographer," Fiorina said. "It is not hard to imagine extending this kind of technology to power things like home water purification systems and televisions and lamps."
