I am a senior radio reporter with international reporting experience from more than half a dozen countries, including the revolution in Nicaragua. Have also lived in Australia (2 years) and Finland (1 year). Won a Canadian national award for investigative reporting. Have been in the radio biz since Johnson was President — at least that what I think his name was. I can also read news (have a"nice"voice), but my strength is reporting — and doing original stuff. Oh, and one important detail: I do NOT plagiarize; i.e. steal stories out of the newspaper and try to pass them off as my own. Unfortunately this is a common practice at many radio stations because the bottom-line types have discovered it's cheaper to steal than to produce. I also don't accept junkets. If ethics scares prospective employers, then I'll pass, thank you. Have been in the radio business a long time and I'm not using it as a training ground for some cushy, well-paid communications job. Sorry for sounding like a grouch. I'm actually a thoughtful, kind, hard-working guy. Once you see I don't sell out, we'll get along just fine — and listeners will love it. NASA blames Microsoft for Columbia shuttle disaster
Unbelievable "fup" artists. Who? NASA *and* Microsoft. They whine and then blame others. Oy!

P.S. "Fup" is my new contribution to the English language. Fup means "fuck up". May be used as a noun or a verb. Obviates the need to obfuscate when writing for polite society with forms such as "f*** up" or "f'up" or "phuk up". Eventually the word "fup" will be replaced in everyday language with its infamous synonym, "bush".

Iraq:
U.S. arrests Iraqi union leaders
Excerpt:  "They gave no reason at all, despite being asked over and over," says IFTU spokesperson Abdullah Muhsin. Soldiers painted over the name of the federation on the front of the building with black paint, Muhsin says. The union had few resources, "but we did have a few files, and they took those," Muhsin adds. Ironically, the office had posters on the walls condemning terrorism, which soldiers tore down in the raid.

Is it my imagination, or do these tactics seem familiar?

Afghanistan:
Afghanistan: the forgotten war
Excerpt:  After a relatively quick and casualty-free campaign — for the American military, if not Afghan civilians — Washington declared victory and moved on to begin preparations for tackling Saddam Hussein. But just as the announcement of the official end to hostilities in Iraq has been followed by mayhem, the conflict has restarted in Afghanistan. The military bill for the Pentagon, so far, is a staggering $50bn — nearly £30bn.

For a Green presidential campaign in 2004
by Howie Hawkins, Syracuse Greens
Excerpt:  To be sure, Bush is scary. Constitutional rights restricted. Unilateral presidential war powers. War budget hiked. International treaties abrogated. Tax cuts for the rich. Worker safety and environmental regulations gutted. Pandering to corporate interests in the midst of a corporate crime wave. An anti-consumer bankruptcy bill. Invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, with threats of future invasions or proxy wars for regime change in Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, and who knows where else.

But the Democrats are scary, too. The majority of congressional Democrats have let Bush have his way on every one of these issues.

Global Eye: Bullet points
by Chris Floyd, The Moscow [Russia] Times
Excerpt:  "When I heard of the ballistic characteristics of this ammo, as a retired military officer, I realized it has to stay in the good guys' hands," Skipper told Army Times. "This is an issue of national security."

Let's ponder that for a moment. Why is the Army's decision in this matter "an issue of national security?" It's obvious: because if the "good guys" don't buy Le Mas' gut-chewing ammo, then they will sell it to the bad guys — to anyone who'll pay the price.
Disorder steals soldier's mind, life
Excerpt:  "I don't blame the Army for this disease," said his father, retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. John Alford, who was in the service 34 years. "I blame them for how they treated my son. They treated him like yesterday's garbage. They reduced his rank. They called him an idiot, called him stupid — this is a wounded soldier. It's no different than if he had taken a bullet to the brain."
Bush should've taken his father's advice on war
by Robert T. Grey Jr., Global Security Institute
Excerpt:  America is less secure today than before invading Iraq, we lost international support, and the chaos in Iraq has become a grave threat to international security.
King George's retribution
Editorial, The Capital Times [Madison, WI]
Excerpt:  The best allies the United States had in the months prior to the invasion of Iraq were not those countries that grudgingly went along with George W. Bush's rush to war. The best allies were Canada, France and Germany.

These three countries, all of which have been consistent and well-regarded sources of information and analysis for the Central Intelligence Agency and other U.S. international security agencies, explained that Iraq did not pose an immediate — or particularly serious — threat to its neighbors in the Middle East, let alone to the distant United States. They reminded U.S. officials that there was no evidence to suggest Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network. They detailed the success of past U.N. weapons inspections, which had destroyed most if not all of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, and they proposed a regimen of aggressive inspections to ensure that any remaining weapons — and the capacity to develop them — would be eliminated.

Canada, France, Germany and other countries did exactly what friends should do. They tried to prevent the United States from making a terrible mistake.

by Helen & Harry Highwater, Unknown News
Excerpt:  There is no-one currently or feasibly running on the Democratic side that we wouldn't smother with kisses if he/she got the nomination. We would vote for a mystery man like Wesley Clark. We would vote for a bag of hot air like Al Sharpton or Joe Lieberman. We would vote for a bag of potato chips if it ran against Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Powell-Rice. Negative trend of "managed democracy"
Excerpt:  In Washington, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the United States shares the OSCE's concerns about the fairness of the election campaign.

The state's use of its influence in the elections was part of the "negative trend of ... managed democracy," said Michael McFaul, a Russia expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "Whether we should continue to call it democracy I don't know. I am less and less confident that one should."

He was talking about Russia! Right? Wasn't he ? Hmmn! Kerry accuses Bush of lying to nation on Iraq, terrorism
Well, I love it that Senator Kerry decided to Hail Mary his ass into the White House by FINALLY speaking some TRUTH. Dammit, Senator, what took you so f***ing long!@?
=Liberez L'Ours=

That’s a rhetorical question, I assume. Obviously, it took so f***ing long because Kerry didn’t figure out he felt that way until his handlers and pollsters told him. :)
=H&HH=

PERHAPS the Kerry Lesson will not be lost on the other Demopups, those flea-bitten curs who are still hiding under Bush's apron.

PERHAPS someone will teach them a lesson at the next election and throw their sorry asses into the unemployment lines. That in itself is a damn fine reason to register and vote! Maybe the Bush Regime will win in 2004 but MAY BE your vote can send a Democrat home in shame and disgrace! Sure, why not? Vote for Mickey Mouse or Harry Browne or Mike Hunt instead of the Dem. Hell, vote for the Republican! Is it better to have an honest crook than a sniveling coward who is true to no principle and has no honor and no courage.

PERHAPS your vote has no meaning, if it is even counted. So why not vote your conscience! If they ask you to vote for the lesser of two evils, just tell 'em you'll be voting for Satan the Great Lord of Evil before you vote for a cowardly Democrat... unless they all start denouncing the Bush Regime and its lies, murders, thefts and schemes to subvert the Constitution!@#$

Some die, others profit
Editorial, Des Moines [IA] Register

Excerpt:  War profiteering has long been despised by Americans, and Halliburton's outrageous contract in Iraq ought to reopen that vein of moral outrage. Your government is paying the company more than twice what others are paying to bring in fuel from Kuwait, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
North Korea uses the internet to spread propaganda and falsehoods
Excerpt:  The information technology tools also are used "to develop new means of indoctrinating the public in North Korea and reaching audiences overseas."

North Korea remains a totalitarian police state where propaganda and government falsehoods are disseminated to indoctrinate the population. Key to the effort is promoting the dictatorship of Kim Jong-Il, who has established a personality cult similar to that of Mao in China.

My version: The information technology tools also are used "to develop new means of indoctrinating the public in North America and reaching audiences overseas."

America remains a totalitarian police state where propaganda and government falsehoods are disseminated to indoctrinate the population. Key to the effort is promoting the dictatorship of George W. Bush, who has established a personality cult similar to that of Mao in China.

Bill O'Reilly — America's "Pinhead"
by Joe Lolli, Common Voice
Excerpt:  I watched Bill O'Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor” lie to his viewers last night over what the Clinton "Assault Weapons Ban" (AWB) says. Mr. O'Reilly claimed that the public supports the AWB because it “keeps your neighbors from owning bazookas and machineguns in their homes”. But those type weapons have been illegal for almost 3/4 of a century. And the AWB has nothing to do that that. The Clinton AWB only makes guns that "LOOK" like military assault weapons illegal and has had no impact on preventing or reducing crime in the ten years of its existence.

Ford's exploding Crown Victorias
and how cops had to solve the problem themselves
Excerpt:  Three months later, on Sept. 27, 2002, the panel and Ford announced a plan. Ford executives said during a news conference in Phoenix that the company would install plastic shield kits to protect the gas tanks of 350,000 Crown Victoria police cars on the road nationwide. Ford is also installing those kits in the factory.

By then, three years had passed since state troopers in Florida had begun investigating fiery crashes of Crown Vics — and had issued a report recommending some of the same actions Ford was now taking. In that time, at least four officers had died nationwide — and another was badly burned.

Ford insisted that only police cars would need the shields; civilian drivers weren't at risk as much as officers.

I just love knowing Ford thinks we're not at risk. What they're really saying is, you don't have anyone looking out for your safety like these troopers thankfully do, so it's OK for you to die.

IN   TODAY'S
DIALOGUE

I believe in freedom of speech, but... I also know bullshit when I hear it and a bullshitter when I see one.
  —Don T.

Militarism is as old as humanity. It is as old as that other oldest profession, and closely interrelated. To criticize militaries and war is to criticize humanity, period, for we are sadly inseparable from this behavior. It is universal. We know of no warless societies. Rousseau’s gently noble savage is largely a figment of his imagination, much like the Tasaday tribe were not genuine, but a moving picture tableau vivant.

There is an important difference the brown grasslands and the painted brown grasslands. The Republicans say outright that their grass is brown, not fit for consumption and that one had better find something for the winter or starve. Meanwhile, the Democrats tell you that their grass is bounteous and nutritious and not to worry about forage for the winter. Anyone who believes that will starve for sure.
  —Hal C.

The only Americans who ever lost lives for freedom were the ones killed in the war of secession (the so-called Revolutionary War) and the War of 1812, and the ones killed since then participating in strikes, protests, riots, and other domestic popular revolts. That's the kind of fighting that has won every one of our freedoms and will be necessary to win it again.
  —Ran Prieur

The reallusionists — the actor pols on both sides of the reallusion — have been set in place by the haves of the world, the true fascist elitists and corporate gangsters. This current reallusion is simply part of the age old struggle of have against the have not. It is simply the latest manifestation of an ever changing set of clothes.

Remember all those people in 2000 who said, "Anyone but Gore?" See how most of them are now holding their heads in agony? Let's not make the same mistake ...

I finally figured out that politics is NOT a matter of conscience, it's pure tactics. Our mistake was in knowing that to be true of politicians, but thinking we voters were too pure for that kind of pragmatism.
  —Toni S.

You've clearly implied my response was out of line, disrespectful, nasty, insulting and misrepresentative. I guess we have a difference of opinion.
  —Sander

Celebrate the capture of Saddam!
  —Jerry A.

Due to technical, financial, and our own personal shortcomings, we might occassionally be unable to post our daily dose of bad news here. If an update is late or missing, don't despair, and don't give up — the battle continues. Our most reliable sources are listed right here, where you can always seek out and find the news that matters. And if we're gone, while we're gone, remember that your support has been (and still is) appreciated — and we shall return, soon.

If technical difficulties do knock us off-line, we'll use the library's free internet access to post a message at the alt.cynics newsgroup, so folks won't think we're among the Ashcroft 'disappeared'. If we don't post a message at alt.cynics, then you're authorized to worry.
