Hello, i joined the club awhile ago but i never posted. So this will be my first post. Lately i've been kinda bored with music. Haven't heard anything that strikes my fancy in a bit. However, recently i discovered a band who i absolutely adore- Sahara Hotnights. They're a "chickband" from Sweden and have been playing a bit with the hives. I don't know if anyone's familiar with Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars? But they're really cool, so i suggest everyone at least give them a listen, capricorn is their first single, if that doesn't really fit your fancy i wouldn't really bother listening to anymore of them because it all is pretty similar to that. But they're pretty good =) Queens of the Stone Age will be playing around my town so i'm going to see them in a couple weeks...Mars Volta had a few songs on AudioGalexy so i've been listening to them a lot. Other than those aforementioned bands i haven't really given anything else a listen. Just curious what everyone else was listening too. |

The day started just like any other. Woke up, took a shower, went to work. I got to work around noon. I was working for my friend Rob's dad. He had company that fixed and refurbished machines that put lids on cans. One of my jobs was to paint the machine parts after they were refurbished. It was a mindless job, but true to my artist roots (yeah right!) I was back in the paint room. I worked by myself most of the time. I always had the radio on. We had a really cool radio station, 103.9 WDRE, Philly's modern rock. They played all the music I liked. It was kinda like a renegade radio station. They didn't follow mainstream music ideals. Following my normal routine, I set up to do my paint work, got everything prepared, and flipped on the radio. Lithium was playing when I turned on the radio. I thought to myself, "Ah, cool." After Lithium, they played Heart Shaped Box. Then they played About A Girl. At this point I'm thinking, "OK, this is strange, they've played three Nirvana songs in a row. And they played a song that they've never played on the radio before". After About A Girl was finished the DJ came back on. I don't remember her name, but I remember exactly what she said. In a sad, tearful, and solemn voice, she said the following..."The body of Kurt Cobain was found in his Seattle home this morning. He apparently died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound." My eyes welled up with tears. I was in shock. I was numb. I didn't believe it. I didn't believe what I heard. It couldn't be true. I sat down, put my head in my hands and cried. I was paralyzed by the news. They continued playing Nirvana and nothing but Nirvana. I don't remember what was played though. After every few songs, the DJ would come back on and basically give the same report with few new details. I didn't move from my chair. My girlfriend at the time was still in school. I kept my eye on the clock and waited until I knew she was home from school. At 3:30 that afternoon I called Sara to tell her the news. She couldn't believe it either. She wasn't a fan of Nirvana, but she was sad too. I completed no work that day. At 6:00, I left work and went home. It's almost hard to describe my emotions and what I was feeling. I'd never been so sad and devestated in my whole life. I felt as if I'd lost the only real thing in my life. The only thing that was there for me. The only thing I could relate to. Nirvana changed my life. Through the music, I discovered who I was. Through the music, I realized that I was different, but that was fine. It didn't matter what other people thought, because I'm unique and different and my own person. It was OK that I didn't conform to my friends or to the world around me. It was OK to be me. And fuck you if you didn't like it. Nothing has ever touched me like Nirvana. Few people understand this, though... To most people, Nirvana was just a band, it's just music, it's an inanimate thing. Nirvana was not a person. I never met Nirvana. I never spoke to Nirvana. Nirvana never helped out of a jam or bought me a lunch. Nirvana never took me anywhere or sent me a birthday card. So, how could I love this thing called Nirvana so much? It's the passion and integrity in the music. Nirvana didn't have to physically do anything for me. Nirvana didn't have to give me anything or buy me anything for me to gain my love and respect. That's hard for most people to understand. Nirvana was like the best friend I ever had. The music was always there for me and still is to this day. Nirvana was something I could identify with. Something I could understand. Something I could "get". Nirvana spit in the face of everything I hated about the world. They did things differently. They played by their own rules. They made their own way. They disrupted conformity. It was a revolution of sorts. And I got to discover it and live through it. I was 15 when I discovered Nirvana. The timing couldn't have been better. The music was like a medicine for all that ailed my soul. It mended my bleeding, aching heart. It lifted the staggering weight of opression from my shoulders. I was no longer bound by surroundings. I was free to think and feel how I wanted. It was OK. I was now empowered to make my own way in this world. And for this, I'm forever grateful and forever indebted. 1991-1994 = Freedom. "Forever in debt to your priceless advice..." |

faith no more. today's music has definely been influenced by them, but the digital sound of the overall recording makes the music seem plastic. i'm not sure if completely digital is the way to go. there is so much happening on this recording. mike patton solo performances for voice are incredible. anyone that's heard them knows just how much vision he took into faith no more. word fail...i'm moved. | ||||||
