Day 13, Kitchen cabinets completed
This afternoon, Montebello Woodworking finished installing our Canton kitchen from Mill's Pride. We love it! Check out the Day 13 album in the Renovations .Mac photo-journal.
Dad also painted the ensuite-bathroom, and painted the remaining trim white. We ought to have enough paint left to get the basement done once immediately after we move out.
The counters were measured this afternoon, they will be installed at 1pm on Tuesday. Tomorrow the tiling starts in the kitchen and dining room!

Renovation journal Day 12: Kitchen cabinets
Day 12 has been posted to the Renovations .Mac photo-journal.
Kitchen cabinets were installed today... and they look so great! (I think so, anyway) It's starting to look like a home rather than an empty shell. Tiles, mortar, grout and baseboards will be delivered tomorrow in preparation for installation on Friday and Saturday.
On Sunday, my Mom and Dad are going on vacation, so Cheryl and I will be on our own at that point, so hopefully we can get the hard stuff done before Dad goes. :-)
TB Tribute editorial said Lightning lost Game 7
Tampa Bay Tribune: Wrong Editorial Puzzles, Angers Lightning Fans, Readers
I didn't say anything about the entire playoffs, but this I couldn't pass up.
Oh, and by the way, Calgary probably rightly won game 6 but the entire league screwed up, yet again. This is like the Brett Hull non-goal of '99 but worse. The Flames ran out of gas in Game 7 but they shouldn't have even played it. Martin Gelinas would have had the series winning goal in all 4 series had the goal counted and stood up for the victory in game 6.
That said, Tampa Bay was the better team in Game 7 and deserved to win that game, and I think they earned the cup as much as Calgary, and I'm happy they won. It would have been great for a Canadian team to win it, but there are 19 Canadians on the Lightning, so it's not all bad.
Speaking of Gelinas (a former Edmonton Oiler Stanley Cup champion), before the puck dropped for Game 7 of the opening series of the playoffs between Calgary and Vancouver, I asked my dad and neighbour (who were watching the game at my place) who they thought would score the game winning goal. I picked Gelinas... he scored the game (and series) winning goal in that series and the next two. Not a bad pick huh? ;-)

Renovation journal days 10 and 11 posted
Two more days appended to the Renovations .Mac photo-journal.
We finally have the kitchen/dining room subfloor installed. We'll be putting in ceramic tile once the cabinets are installed. We had to pick out new tile and carpet yesterday because the stuff we ordered was back-ordered. Apparently the tile is made in a place in Italy affected by a strike. A major bummer since our wall colours were coordinated with that floor.
Our new tile is nearly white, whereas we had a brown tile before. The carpet is pretty close to the stuff we had before, but creamier and a little brighter. Frankly, I think I like it better, but I would have preferred the old stuff if we could have gotten it in in time.
We bought baseboards, another 1500 floor screws, and the 3rd 5-gallon pail of white paint. I don't now how they figured one would be enough. I think we only needed 2 gallons, but hopefully we'll have enough now to do the basement.
There's so much painting left to do. I don't know how they do it so fast on those renovation shows on TLC. :-)
Dad has been kicking so much ass. I feel bad not being able to help much during the week, but there's nothing I can do about it. We'd be up the creek without a paddle without his help, and that's such an understatement it's funny. Thanks Dad!
And thanks to Moms, Dads and Uncles for watching the kids so Cheryl can help during the days and weekends!
Oh, tomorrow morning at 8am our kitchen cabinets are due to arrive (confirmed this afternoon) and be installed. I am so excited! Appliances start arriving on Thursday, the rest on Tuesday. I just hope we can get the painting done quickly and the carpet can be installed soon so that we can move upstairs as quickly as possible.

5 more renovation journal photo albums
I uploaded 5 more days of pictures to the Renovations .Mac photo-journal.
Lots of progress, the drywall got sorted out beautifully, and vibrant paint has started hitting walls. :-)
Check it out! Now we just have to go pick a different colour of carpet because the stuff we ordered is on back-order until... way too far in the future for our schedule.

Renovating upstairs
The house we moved into was tenanted upstairs when we took possession, so we've been living in the basement in-law suite. They were given notice by the previous owners on April 1st, so they had until the end of May before they had to move out.
On Saturday, the tenants moved to their new place. It was sad to see them go because they are absolutely wonderful people, but it was necessary unfortunately. We're hoping to keep in touch with them.
On Saturday evening, despite feeling like crap because I have a cold, I started on the renos. Mom came and helped me remove the carpets and underlay. On Sunday, Dad and I demolished an L-shaped wall in the kitchen, removed wood paneling from a long wall in the dining room and living room, removed the kitchen cabinets and appliances, and drywalled/mudded the hole in the ceiling where the wall was. Yesterday Cheryl picked up the paint, and Dad and I were doing electrical when one of the pieces of wood Dad tried to walk on in the attic gave way and he nearly went through the kitchen ceiling! Thankfully Dad escaped injury, but the kitchen ceiling didn't fare as well. Our attempt to replace the drywall was not done well enough in my opinion (not my Dad's though), so I'm looking for a drywall professional.
But now it's time to get back to work. Dad's continuing with the work upstairs. We've found an electrician to finish the electrical.
Our new kitchen cabinets are being installed on the 9th. We need the electrical done soon so that we can put the subfloor (pictures would explain that dependency, I don't have time to explain, but trust me on this one) in the kitchen and dining room in time. We also need to paint the parts of the walls that won't be hidden by cabinets (which isn't much, really), and the kitchen ceiling (which is currently buggered).
I have got to say, taking down walls with sledgehammers and cro-bars is amazingly fun. Once we were done I was looking around the house for other walls that might be expendable. ;-)
Sometime this week I'll post some photo albums from each day of our progress.

Microsoft misquoted, there is NO $50 iPod
Michael Gartenberg: There is NO $50 iPod from Microsoft...
The Microsoft guy was mis-quoted. The press is brutal sometimes. eWeek completely made up quotes for their story about the Plone Foundation (which is why I didn't link to it), leading to potentially damaging misinformation.
